2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 problems

The Chevrolet Silverado is a range of trucks manufactured by General Motors under the Chevrolet brand. Introduced for the 1999 model year, the Silverado is the successor to the long-running Chevrolet C/K model line. Taking its name from the top trim level from the Chevrolet C/K series, the Silverado is offered as a series of full-size pickup trucks, chassis cab trucks, and medium-duty trucks. The fourth generation of the model line was introduced for the 2019 model year.

The Chevrolet Silverado shares mechanical commonality with the identically related GMC Sierra; GMC ended the use of the C/K nomenclature a model generation prior to Chevrolet. In Mexico, high-trim level versions of the Silverado use the Chevrolet Cheyenne name (not to be confused with the 2003 concept). Competing against the Ford F-Series, Ram Pickup, Toyota Tundra, and Nissan Titan, the Silverado is among the best-selling vehicles in the United States, having sold over 12 million trucks since its introduction in 1998 as a 1999 model year.

History

The Silverado nameplate made its debut for the 1975 model year, becoming the top trim level on all Chevrolet C/K trucks, slotted above Custom Deluxe, Scottsdale, and Cheyenne. For the 1968 model year (seven years before the Silverado), GMC C/K trucks used variations of the Sierra name (Sierra, Sierra Classic, Sierra Grande, and High Sierra). Even after the C/K series officially ended, GM still uses the CK and the CC in their current model codes, to denote a two-wheel drive (CC), and four-wheel drive (CK).

For the 1988 GMT400 model architecture, Chevrolet retained the C/K model nomenclature, with GMC branding its full-size line as Sierras. While sharing the same body and chassis, the model chronology of the Silverado and Sierra are different, with five generations of the Sierra, while four of the Silverado.

In 2018, at the NTEA Work Truck Show in Indianapolis, Indiana, Chevrolet unveiled the first medium-duty Silverado, expanding the model line to a 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD chassis cab. Largely the successor to the 2003–2009 GMT560 chassis, the medium-duty trucks are exclusive to Chevrolet, with no plans for an equivalent GMC version. Instead, Navistar International (now partnering with GM) would sell the medium-duty trucks as a rebadged counterpart, called the CV. This is in fact a very similar nod to how the Avalanche did not have a GMC Yukon–based equivalent, but instead, Cadillac would take its place as the former's rebadged counterpart, the Escalade EXT.

Common 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 problems

Based on the information provided in the search results, here is a detailed list of common problems with the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 2000 based on complaints from owners:

  1. 4WD Position Switch Failure:
    • Owners reported issues with the 4WD switch automatically switching between 4WD and 2WD, accompanied by a "Service 4WD" light. This problem was often caused by a worn position sensor, affecting the drivetrain and fuel efficiency. The problem typically arose around 100,000 miles, impacting trucks used for heavy-duty tasks.
  2. Front Wheel Bearing Failure:
    • Premature failure of front wheel bearings was a common issue in early Silverados. Rust problems around the hubs led to wheel bearing issues, causing ABS sensor misalignment and activation even at slow speeds. Signs of a faulty front wheel bearing included noise while driving, uneven tire wear, soft brake pedals, and illuminated ABS warning lights.
  3. Knock Sensor Failure:
    • The knock sensors in LS-powered GM trucks, including the 2000 Silverado, were prone to failure. These sensors detect combustion issues that could harm the engine. Over time, the rubber plugs sealing the sensors hardened, leading to engine problems. Failure of knock sensors could result in engine issues and potential failures.
  4. Bad Touchscreen:
    • Some owners reported issues with glitching or unresponsive touchscreens in the 2000 Silverado. Attempting to reset the truck's computer by disconnecting the battery and holding the radio's power button could sometimes resolve the problem. If issues persisted, professional diagnostics were recommended.
  5. Engine Control Module Problems:
    • Certain 2018 Silverados experienced unexpected engine stalling and failures. This issue could lead to operational problems with the transmission system, requiring attention from a certified repair shop. Unexpected engine stalling could pose safety risks and impact the overall performance of the vehicle.

These common problems with the Chevrolet Silverado 1500 2000, as reported by owners, highlight various issues ranging from drivetrain malfunctions to electronic and engine-related concerns. Addressing these problems promptly through professional diagnostics and repairs is crucial to ensure the vehicle's safety, performance, and longevity.

Negative 2000 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 car reviews

  1. Skylar Oberbrunner 2025-03-13

Intermittent surge issues were experienced without any corresponding error codes. The emergency brake flaw is a serious concern that should have been addressed through a recall. After reaching 100k, the ABS lights would come on at odd times, which led to the discovery of corrosion on the wheel sensor. The clutch pedal adjustment is inadequate.

I bought this truck with 130000 miles and it has been a reliable companion ever since. Even after driving it for another 74000 miles, it still runs smoothly without any leaks. I especially enjoy the driving experience after installing some upgrades like super chips, heavier front torsion bars, an additional full leaf to the rear springs, Bilstiens, and a locking rear end. However, there have been some issues with the throttle body, fuel tank sender, 4wd switch, EVAP vent valve, ABS unit, and fan blower switch, as well as the driver's side window regulator. Unfortunately, the rocker panels have also suffered from rot due to a design flaw. Although the dealers have not disclosed how many defective parts have been replaced, I believe that more recalls should have been issued. Despite these setbacks, I still appreciate my truck and the memories we've shared.

  3. Xander Turner 2024-10-07

Although the truck was quite expensive, it did not meet my expectations. There have been several recalls, and it has been challenging to get Chevy to acknowledge the issues. The truck has a few problems, such as the sound of a diesel engine for the first five minutes after starting it, the A/C pump that never stops running, and the fuel pump that went out. Additionally, the keyless entry only works about half the time. I hope Chevy can address these issues in the future to improve their customers' experience.

For the parts of this vehicle, it is important to note that their model numbers should all begin with g.a.r.b.a.g.e. followed by an identifying number. I have developed a good relationship with the parts store employees since I frequently visit them due to my vehicle's needs. I even have one of them on speed dial to save me time when I need something. This truck is a popular choice in the parts market. When I asked the guy at Advanced Auto which parts are most commonly in stock, it was no surprise that about 80% of them were for Chevy. However, despite having 144,000 miles, the engine does not knock, although it does lose a quart of oil per month. It seems like every part was strategically placed to make it difficult for the owner to do basic maintenance, so it's best to leave it to the professionals. I also own a Toyota 4-Runner made in Japan, which has been a reliable vehicle with only one alternator replacement in its 204,000 miles. If you want a dependable ride, I highly recommend finding a Toyota made in Japan. On the other hand, I have had several issues with my Chevy, including steering clanks, oil and coolant leaks despite numerous repairs, power steering leaks after water pump replacement, a fuel gauge that has never worked properly, doors that don't seem to close properly, and a water leak when it rains. The transmission cable has already gone out, and the list goes on. I also own a Jeep CJ7 1979 model with a true Chevy 305 from a 69 model car, which has been another amazing vehicle with next to no problems. In conclusion, I would not recommend buying a Chevy unless you are tired of your money and want to get rid of it. If you do decide to buy one, please consider donating it to me so I can keep fixing mine. Thanks for reading.

Although this truck has had some issues, it is important to note that these problems are not present in newer models. With 80,000 miles on the clock, it has served me well on the interstate, where the vibration is not noticeable at speeds above 70 mph. However, at lower speeds, the steering wheel can shake quite a bit. Despite this, I am confident that this truck has many great features and capabilities that make it a worthwhile investment. Thank you for considering my experience.

  1. Santiago Rogahn 2025-06-22

I purchased this truck on June 13th, 2011 with 147,000 km. Today, on November 27th, 2013, it has 182,000 km. I bought it from the original owner who claimed to have never spent a penny on it, other than yearly oil changes. I recently replaced all the brake lines, front brakes, rotors, and one front bearing. I still make sure to oil the truck yearly. The frame and body are in excellent shape and I am very satisfied with this truck. Additionally, I am running 35-inch tires and a lift kit.

  2. Sage Rolfson 2025-06-18

I purchased my 2000 Silverado Z-71 in April of 2009 with 106,000 miles on the odometer. It has been an excellent truck so far, providing great gas mileage, comfort, performance, and handling. The body is in perfect shape for its age and mileage, the interior is spotless, and under the hood is very clean. I drive it every day, 30 miles one way to work. Recently, I changed the fuel pressure regulator, which only cost $50 and was easy to do myself. There are no squeaks or rattles inside. Now, with 121,000 miles on the odometer, it is still going strong!

  3. Francesco Kertzmann 2025-06-14

I bought this truck brand new and drove it for ten years. I recently gave it to my son, who now drives it to work. It has almost 200,000 miles and has never required any major repairs. The only repair I had to make was replacing the rack and pinion steering at 195,000 miles, which only cost $200.00. Not bad, right?

  4. Seth Murray 2025-05-27

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to let you know that your truck has never been in for repair, which is great news! It has 35,000 miles on it and is in exceptional condition. Keep up the good work!

  5. Chaim Mueller 2025-04-23

I've owned two Silverados in the past few years. My first Silverado was a 2002 Chevy Silverado 1500 LS, which I really enjoyed driving. Unfortunately, I had to sell it due to gas mileage and being a college student. I ended up buying a Civic for its excellent gas mileage, but I soon realized that I needed to be back in a full-size truck regardless of gas mileage. That's when I purchased a 2000 Chevy Silverado LT edition, which I quickly fell in love with. It was basically identical to my LS, except it had a few more features.
