1999 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 problems
The Chevrolet Silverado is a range of trucks manufactured by General Motors under the Chevrolet brand. Introduced for the 1999 model year, the Silverado is the successor to the long-running Chevrolet C/K model line. Taking its name from the top trim level from the Chevrolet C/K series, the Silverado is offered as a series of full-size pickup trucks, chassis cab trucks, and medium-duty trucks. The fourth generation of the model line was introduced for the 2019 model year.
The Chevrolet Silverado shares mechanical commonality with the identically related GMC Sierra; GMC ended the use of the C/K nomenclature a model generation prior to Chevrolet. In Mexico, high-trim level versions of the Silverado use the Chevrolet Cheyenne name (not to be confused with the 2003 concept). Competing against the Ford F-Series, Ram Pickup, Toyota Tundra, and Nissan Titan, the Silverado is among the best-selling vehicles in the United States, having sold over 12 million trucks since its introduction in 1998 as a 1999 model year.
History
The Silverado nameplate made its debut for the 1975 model year, becoming the top trim level on all Chevrolet C/K trucks, slotted above Custom Deluxe, Scottsdale, and Cheyenne. For the 1968 model year (seven years before the Silverado), GMC C/K trucks used variations of the Sierra name (Sierra, Sierra Classic, Sierra Grande, and High Sierra). Even after the C/K series officially ended, GM still uses the CK and the CC in their current model codes, to denote a two-wheel drive (CC), and four-wheel drive (CK).
For the 1988 GMT400 model architecture, Chevrolet retained the C/K model nomenclature, with GMC branding its full-size line as Sierras. While sharing the same body and chassis, the model chronology of the Silverado and Sierra are different, with five generations of the Sierra, while four of the Silverado.
In 2018, at the NTEA Work Truck Show in Indianapolis, Indiana, Chevrolet unveiled the first medium-duty Silverado, expanding the model line to a 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD chassis cab. Largely the successor to the 2003–2009 GMT560 chassis, the medium-duty trucks are exclusive to Chevrolet, with no plans for an equivalent GMC version. Instead, Navistar International (now partnering with GM) would sell the medium-duty trucks as a rebadged counterpart, called the CV. This is in fact a very similar nod to how the Avalanche did not have a GMC Yukon–based equivalent, but instead, Cadillac would take its place as the former's rebadged counterpart, the Escalade EXT.

- Summary: PASSLOCK SYSTEM ENGAGES WITHOUT CAUSE. WHEN STARTING MY TRUCK, IT ACTS LIKE IT WILL AND THEN SHUTS DOWN AFTER A SECOND, AND THEN THE SECURITY LIGHT COMES ON. THIS IS COMMON WITH PAST LOCK SYSTEM ERRORS. THIS HAPPENS ABOUT 1 OUT OF 4 STARTS. TO GET THE CAR STARTED, I HAVE TO GO THROUGH A RESET PROCESS THAT TAKES OVER 30 MIN, WHICH CAUSES BATTERY DRAIN. THIS HAS LEFT MYSELF AND FAMILY MEMBERS STRANDED IN UNSAFE SITUATIONS SEVERAL TIMES. MOST RECENTLY I WAS STUCK ON THE SIDE OF THE HIGHWAY, AFTER STOPPING TO CHANGE A FLAT AT 11PM. AFTER NOT STARTING WITH THESE SAME SYMTOMS, WHILE TRYING TO DO THE 30MIN. RELEARN PROCESS, THE BATTERY DID NOT HAVE ENOUGH TO START THE TRUCK. SO I WAS THEN STUCK THERE FOR 3 MORE HOURS WAITING ON A TOW TRUCK FOR A JUMP. I WAS STRANDED FOR OVER 3 1/2 HOURS. THIS ISSUE HAS BEEN HAPPENING FOR THE LAST 2 YEARS, AND HAVE SPENT ABOUT 4K DOLLARS TO TRY AND FIX IT.

- Summary: HAD TO HAVE ALL THE BRAKE LINES REPLACED. THE LINES BURST DUE TO THEM ALL BEING RUSTED OUT AND CORRODED. I HAVE A 1994 TOYOTA PICK UP TRUCK WITH MORE MILES THAN MY 1999 CHEVY SILVERADO AND THE BRAKE LINES ARE NOT RUSTED OR CORRODED GO FIGURE! I WAS APPROACHING A TRAFFIC LIGHT AND WHEN I APPLIED THE BRAKES, THE BRAKE PEDDLE WENT ALL THE WAY DOWN TO THE FLOOR. I PULLED OVER AND LOOKED UNDER THE TRUCK AND SAW A PUDDLE OF BRAKE FLUID ON THE GROUND UNDERNEATH THE DRIVERS DOOR AND GAS TANK. I HAD THE VEHICLE TOWED TO THE LOCAL CHEVROLET DEALER AND ALL THE BRAKE LINES WERE REPLACED FOR $1066.33. I WAS CHARGE FOR 8 HOURS OF LABOR. I AM PISSED OFF AND WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER CHEVROLET VEHICLE, BECAUSE OF THEIR USE OF SUBSTANDARD MATERIAL ON THE MOST IMPORTANT PART (BRAKES) OF THEIR VEHICLES AND THEIR FAILING TO ACKNOWLEDGE & CORRECT THIS SERIOUS PROBLEM WITH THESE MODEL YEAR TRUCKS WHEN IT WAS BROUGHT TO THEIR ATTENTION, INSTEAD THEY MADE BOGUS EXCUSES AS TO WHY THESE BRAKE LINES WERE FAILING! I HAVE PURCHASE NINE CHEVROLET VEHICLES IN MY LIFE AND LIKE I STATED EARLIER I WILL NEVER BUY ANOTHER CHEVROLET AGAIN AND WILL DISCOURAGE EVERYONE I KNOW THAT IS IN THE MARKET TO PURCHASE A VEHICLE TO NOT BUY A CHEVROLET BECAUSE, THE WAY CHEVROLET FAILED TO RESOLVE THE BRAKE LINE PROBLEM WITH THESE TRUCKS IS UNACCEPTABLE!

This is the hands down best truck I have ever owned. Chevrolet did a very good job
-
I bought this truck new in 1999 and I'm still pleasantly surprised by its outstanding fuel economy. It gets approximately 17 mpg in the city and 22 mpg on the highway. The slogan is 'like a rock' and over the last 3 years, I haven't had any problems. With 72,000+ miles and still the original brakes, this truck has proven to be reliable. I still feel excited whenever I drive it because I love it!
-
I really enjoy the drivability and ride of my truck. With the Z71 package, it handles and rides better than my sister's 2001 2WD. The power and fuel economy (5.3L) are impressive, and even with over-sized mud tires, full guards, and a Tri-glass shell, it still pulls my heavy boat and other trailers with ease! I also love the auto-4WD. The only issue I have experienced is that the throttle cable sticks on cold starts, but a quick tap of the gas pedal gets me past the sticking. I have put 80000 miles on this truck and have only had to deal with 3 factory recalls, which is quite impressive to me. Unlike some of the other reviews I have read, I have not experienced any difficulties such as a noisy rear-end clunk.
-
The dealership promptly resolved a minor issue with the gas pedal sticking and an erratic fuel gauge by cleaning and fixing the pedal and replacing the fuel pump, respectively.
-
With 30k miles, it has been in for repairs 15 times! Both electric windows broke, weather stripping fell off, both exterior mirrors broke, the A/C pump clutch broke, paint wore off in less than 3k miles, there was a horrible clunk in the rear end, and there were 3 factory recalls. All 4 rotors fell apart and had to be replaced at 20K miles. The service engine soon light came on 3 times! When it's not falling apart, it's a ball to drive. It's comfortable and gets good gas mileage.

Hi there! I heard that the 2000 model has resolved many issues. :)
Mervin Champlin 2024-08-16
I have had this truck for 5 years on a lease that is about to expire, and I am glad I am getting rid of it. Although it looks good, it has had some issues that have been difficult to fix. The gas pedal has been sticking, and the truck has had cooling system problems. The OE tires were nearly bald after 28,000 miles, and the power window motors both had to be replaced. In short, it's a typical American car that has reached the end of its life at about 75,000 miles. I am going back to Japanese models.
Leon Waters 2024-05-23
The three factory recalls were not adequately serviced by the dealer, who was reluctant to do so. Despite having repaired the sticking accelerator, it now sticks again, but unfortunately, the warranty will not cover it. Additionally, the auto transmission shifts noticeably rough, which the dealer claims is a common issue for this year model. However, it is important to address these concerns to ensure the safety and satisfaction of the customer.
Ezekiel Tillman 2024-02-23
At 60,000 miles, the transmission required repair which cost $1900. Additionally, the ABS system failed around the same time, with an estimated repair cost of $1,000. It is disappointing that Chevy has not taken responsibility for this common issue. However, despite these setbacks, I still appreciate the truck for its comfortable and luxurious driving experience.
