2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 problems
The Chevrolet Silverado is a range of trucks manufactured by General Motors under the Chevrolet brand. Introduced for the 1999 model year, the Silverado is the successor to the long-running Chevrolet C/K model line. Taking its name from the top trim level from the Chevrolet C/K series, the Silverado is offered as a series of full-size pickup trucks, chassis cab trucks, and medium-duty trucks. The fourth generation of the model line was introduced for the 2019 model year.
The Chevrolet Silverado shares mechanical commonality with the identically related GMC Sierra; GMC ended the use of the C/K nomenclature a model generation prior to Chevrolet. In Mexico, high-trim level versions of the Silverado use the Chevrolet Cheyenne name (not to be confused with the 2003 concept). Competing against the Ford F-Series, Ram Pickup, Toyota Tundra, and Nissan Titan, the Silverado is among the best-selling vehicles in the United States, having sold over 12 million trucks since its introduction in 1998 as a 1999 model year.
History
The Silverado nameplate made its debut for the 1975 model year, becoming the top trim level on all Chevrolet C/K trucks, slotted above Custom Deluxe, Scottsdale, and Cheyenne. For the 1968 model year (seven years before the Silverado), GMC C/K trucks used variations of the Sierra name (Sierra, Sierra Classic, Sierra Grande, and High Sierra). Even after the C/K series officially ended, GM still uses the CK and the CC in their current model codes, to denote a two-wheel drive (CC), and four-wheel drive (CK).
For the 1988 GMT400 model architecture, Chevrolet retained the C/K model nomenclature, with GMC branding its full-size line as Sierras. While sharing the same body and chassis, the model chronology of the Silverado and Sierra are different, with five generations of the Sierra, while four of the Silverado.
In 2018, at the NTEA Work Truck Show in Indianapolis, Indiana, Chevrolet unveiled the first medium-duty Silverado, expanding the model line to a 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD chassis cab. Largely the successor to the 2003–2009 GMT560 chassis, the medium-duty trucks are exclusive to Chevrolet, with no plans for an equivalent GMC version. Instead, Navistar International (now partnering with GM) would sell the medium-duty trucks as a rebadged counterpart, called the CV. This is in fact a very similar nod to how the Avalanche did not have a GMC Yukon–based equivalent, but instead, Cadillac would take its place as the former's rebadged counterpart, the Escalade EXT.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-10
- VIN: 3GCUKREC2HG
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: This is a complaint in regards to the trailer breaking system in my certified pre-owned 2017 Chevy Silverado that I purchased in April of this year, 2024. I purchased this truck in particular for its high ratings in safety and towing capabilities. (April- May 2024) While towing a 22ft trailer from Virginia to Washington state, there were several moments where the “service trailer braking system” alert would appear on the dash. Driving on the interstate for days on end is twice as stressful when you have to wonder if your trailer brakes are reliable. If the trailer brakes were to suddenly stop working it would be dangerous for me and my passengers, as well as those around me on the road. (Sept- Oct 2024) We aren’t towing a trailer anymore, but the “service trailer braking system” light has been going off every couple minutes.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-08
- VIN: 1GCRYEED3KZ
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: I bought my 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 RST used almost 2 years ago. I noticed shortly after buying it that the truck will stall in low gear then lunge forward unexpectedly, it didn't do it all the time just once in a while. Problem is it seems to be happening more frequently and varies in severity. I've asked the local GM dealerships about this issue several times while having it in for service or oil changes. But was told each time that its common with that transmission and nothing to be concerned about, the problem is that I am. I recently started doing research on this and noticed I'm not the only one having these same issues. I'm filing a report as it worries me that a vehicle I'm making payments on is acting this way. I'm also concerned that with the truck in drive and moving, without warning then lunges forward could cause myself or someone else serious injury or worse. This I believe is not the fault of the owner/driver, but GM itself. This problem is not an isolated issue, but one shared by many consumers, me included.

I've also received no help from the chevy dealership or corporate regarding this know problem and I've been told its going to be an out of pocket repair and there's noting they will dop to help.

2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 6 recalls for different components of the 2017 Chevrolet Silverado 1500.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK/TRACTION CONTROL/ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP:WHEEL SPEED SENSOR
- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2020 Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, and GMC Yukon, and 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles equipped with a 5.3-liter engine, a 3.08-ratio rear axle and four-wheel drive. If a wheel-speed sensor fails, while the vehicle is traveling between 41 and 60 mph in four-wheel or automatic mode, the Electronic-Brake Control Module (EBCM) software may activate the driveline-protection system.
- Consequence: Unintended activation of the driveline-protection system will cause unintended braking on the wheel on the opposite side of the failed sensor, causing the vehicle to pull to one side unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the EBCM, free of charge. The recall began December 11, 2019. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-630-2438 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N192261050.

- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2017 Cadillac Escalade, 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado, GMC Sierra, 2015-2018 Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, GMC Yukon vehicles. The amount of vacuum created by the vacuum pump may decrease over time.
- Consequence: As the vacuum level drops, the brake assist decreases, increasing braking effort, extending the distance required to stop the vehicle, thereby increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will reprogram the Electronic Brake Control Module, free of charge. The recall began October 8, 2019. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-630-2438, Cadillac customer service at 1-800-458-8006 or GMC customer service at 1-800-462-8782. GM's number for this recall is N192268490.

While being previously remedied for recall 16V-651, the affected vehicles may not have received the complete software update necessary to remedy the recall condition. Without the update, certain driving conditions may cause the air bag sensing and diagnostic module (SDM) software to activate a diagnostic test. During this test, deployment of the frontal air bags and the seat belt pretensioners would not occur in the event of a crash.
- Consequence: A failure of the front air bags or seat belt pretensioners to deploy in the event of a crash necessitating deployment increases the risk of injury to the driver and front passenger.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will reflash the SDM software. Vehicles that have had a previous air bag deployment will have the SDM replaced. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on August 4, 2017. This truck is amazing! It pulls our toy hauler RV with ease and I can easily load my kayak and fishing gear and go. But what really sold me was the luxurious interior options. It's a truck that gets noticed and has nicer features than my loaded Buick Lacross. We also have a regular Ford F150 for work, but the High Country is our family car with plenty of space for our three kids and all of our stuff. As an outdoorsy family, we wanted something that felt like a luxury car but could still carry our gear. It may be too expensive for just a work truck, but for our needs, it's perfect! Plus, as someone who is only 4'11

Transmission has a shutter in it. The dealer couldn't fix it. Great gas mileage though, 22 on the trip.

I’ve had my crew cab for a year and it has been an amazing experience. Throughout this time, I’ve been able to travel pulling an RV, work trailer, and gone on road trips. Overall, it’s an excellent value for what you get. The powerful V8 engine is perfect for pulling and keeps RPMs low for lower gas consumption. The interior is very comfortable and gives me the ability to use Apple's CarPlay or connect to Bluetooth devices. I have been extremely happy with this pickup. These Silverado’s are only going to get better and better. They are durable, reliable, and made by Chevy, a brand that I trust and love.

This truck has a sleek appearance and provides a smooth ride, but unfortunately, my experience with it has been less than satisfactory. Despite my meticulous care and maintenance, the AFM system, which is meant to improve fuel economy, caused significant damage to the engine, resulting in a costly repair. It is disappointing that GM has not taken responsibility for this known issue and has not issued a recall. Additionally, the transmission failed shortly after the engine repair, which is another issue that GM is currently facing legal action for. These repairs were both out of warranty and cost me a significant amount of money. Despite receiving emails from Asheville Chevrolet encouraging me to trade in the truck for a new one, I am hesitant to invest in another GM vehicle given these ongoing issues.I firmly expressed my dissatisfaction with GM and requested that my address be removed from their records. The sales manager responded and inquired about the issues I had experienced. He offered to have the service manager contact me to discuss the matter, to which I agreed. However, despite their promises, I never heard back from the service manager. The Apple car play has been problematic, as it only connects about half the time, despite trying multiple phones and cords. Additionally, the check engine light is on with a P0440 emission code, and the air conditioner is not blowing cold air due to a coolant leak. While I am getting these issues fixed, I am disappointed with the quality of the vehicle and the lack of support from the dealership. I have shared my negative experience with GM and their products with friends and colleagues, and have successfully convinced six people to choose other brands. I will continue to do so until GM improves their products and customer service.GM should consider shutting down Buick and reducing their marketing budget. Instead, they should focus on producing high-quality vehicles. Unfortunately, GM has a reputation for being unresponsive to consumer complaints and concerns. As a result, many people choose not to buy domestic vehicles. While I understand that all automakers have their flaws, GM's lack of action is particularly concerning. It's important to be aware of these issues and make informed decisions with your hard-earned money.

Congratulations on your purchase of a used 2017 Z71 Silverado 4X4 Crew Cab! While it sounds like you've had some challenges with the vehicle, it's great to hear that you're making the best of it. It's understandable that some of the features and design elements have been frustrating, but it's good to focus on the positives such as the decent gas mileage, nice driving experience on the highway, and great visibility and headlights. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

Headlights on low beam are only effective for a distance of 300 feet. It can be extremely dangerous to use them at highway speeds. If it's raining, it's best to avoid driving altogether. This is especially true if you wear glasses, as visibility can be even worse. Stay safe out there!

I recently switched from a 2004 Ford F150 Lariat to the 2017 Silverado Texas Edition LT 4x4. While I knew the ride wouldn't be as smooth, I was surprised to find that there were no rear a/c vents in the cabin, despite the 102 degree heat with a heat index of 109 in Texas. I added some insulation myself, which helped a little, but at 70 mph it's difficult to hold a conversation with passengers in the back seat. I'm considering upgrading the tires to see if that improves the ride quality. I'm also curious why rear sway bars were not included on this 4x4 truck.

I leased my truck based on Chevy's reputation, but unfortunately it hasn't lived up to my expectations. I have two major complaints - the seats are incredibly uncomfortable and I have to use 2” of extra foam padding just to be able to drive for more than 20 minutes. Additionally, I experienced some issues with starting the truck during a particularly cold spell in NW Wisconsin, and it turns out that many other drivers had the same problem that week. It's disappointing to see a truck that looks so beautiful fall short on comfort and dependability. On the bright side, I do appreciate the responsive 5.3 engine - it's truly awesome!
