The Chevrolet Silverado is a range of trucks manufactured by General Motors under the Chevrolet brand. In Mexico, high-trim level versions of the Silverado use the Chevrolet Cheyenne name (not to be confused with the 2003 concept). Competing against the Ford F-Series, Ram Pickup, Toyota Tundra, and Nissan Titan, the Silverado is among the best-selling vehicles in the United States, having sold over 12 million trucks since its introduction in 1998 as a 1999 model year.
History
The Silverado nameplate made its debut for the 1975 model year, becoming the top trim level on all Chevrolet C/K trucks, slotted above Custom Deluxe, Scottsdale, and Cheyenne. For the 1968 model year (seven years before the Silverado), GMC C/K trucks used variations of the Sierra name (Sierra, Sierra Classic, Sierra Grande, and High Sierra). Even after the C/K series officially ended, GM still uses the CK and the CC in their current model codes, to denote a two-wheel drive (CC), and four-wheel drive (CK).
For the 1988 GMT400 model architecture, Chevrolet retained the C/K model nomenclature, with GMC branding its full-size line as Sierras. While sharing the same body and chassis, the model chronology of the Silverado and Sierra are different, with five generations of the Sierra, while four of the Silverado.
In 2018, at the NTEA Work Truck Show in Indianapolis, Indiana, Chevrolet unveiled the first medium-duty Silverado, expanding the model line to a 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD chassis cab. Largely the successor to the 2003–2009 GMT560 chassis, the medium-duty trucks are exclusive to Chevrolet, with no plans for an equivalent GMC version. Instead, Navistar International (now partnering with GM) would sell the medium-duty trucks as a rebadged counterpart, called the CV. This is in fact a very similar nod to how the Avalanche did not have a GMC Yukon–based equivalent, but instead, Cadillac would take its place as the former's rebadged counterpart, the Escalade EXT.

I am the second owner of a well-maintained 2003 Silverado LS 4WD with the Z71 package. Despite being a 12-year-old truck, it has held up exceptionally well, with the paint still being super glossy. The powertrain is still rock solid, especially the engine. All of the electrical components work perfectly, and in the two years that I've owned it, I've only had to change out the starter. When I purchased the vehicle, I had a total flush and replacement of all the fluids (transmission, power steering, brakes, antifreeze, transfer case, front and rear differentials), which I highly recommend you do with any 4WD you purchase used with over 100K on the clock. I've only replaced the starter and had the instrument cluster serviced (stepper motors replaced and LED lights changed to blue - $75 fix). I'm very proud to own this truck because it was obviously taken care of by the previous owner. However, there are a couple of gripes. The transmission is clunky when shifting from 1st to 2nd and also 2nd to 3rd. Also, when driving at 45 mph and at 65 mph, the extended cab and crew cab versions of the Silverado (also GMC's version the Sierra) transfer vibration through the cabin. Both the shift and vibration issues are simply design flaws. GM recommends placing 300 to 500 pounds directly in the middle of the truck bed to stop the vibration, but who is going to do that? So, you can't fix the vibration issue, but I plan on replacing the transmission with a rebuilt and hardened version of the 4L60E automatic that will address the hard shifting. Fortunately, you can find these transmissions relatively cheap, with the biggest issue being able to find a good mechanic to install it without it costing too much. Overall, for a pickup I purchased with 132K on the odometer, I am extremely happy, and I've only had light maintenance done so far. The 4.8L V8 doesn't leak oil, and parts are cheap because there are millions of Silverados and Sierras on the road. I plan on keeping this truck for a minimum of five to ten more years.*** UPDATE *** Hey there! This is my weekend vehicle and I've had it for nearly 3 years now. I've only driven it for 10,000 miles and unfortunately, the brakes just gave out on me. After some investigation, I found out that the brake hard lines are made of inferior metal. Luckily, when the pedal went to the floor, I was on a remote road with no other cars around. It's going to cost me $1200 to replace all of the defective lines with non-corrosive copper/nickel lines. Thank goodness I have a quality mechanic because I've heard horror stories about $3000 fixes at the dealership. Despite this issue, I'm still keeping the truck and my mechanic says that this isn't just a GM issue. He says that most older pickups/large SUV's brake lines have failures and he sees this quite often at his shop.

You made an excellent choice with this truck! It's amazing that you've driven it from 30K to 80K miles without any issues. With 20 MPG on mostly highway driving, it's both efficient and comfortable for longer trips. The extended cab is incredibly spacious, and I can only imagine how much more room the double cab has. I bought my 03 2wd extended 4.8l ls in 07, so it's 15 years old now and has over 190,000 miles. Despite its age, it still runs great with no problems with the engine. The ride is pretty good, but unfortunately, these GMs are known for electrical problems. The instrument panel cluster has been repaired twice, but it still won't act right and drains the battery if I let the truck sit for a day or longer. It's a pain in the neck, so I just disconnect the whole thing and use my phone for my mph. I've had the water pump replaced, and it's rusting on the rocker panels. The engine does cut off on me mostly when I'm slowing down and making a turn. The wheel caps are a pain too. They're hard to put on, and they get loose after some time. I've lost 3-4 of these so far. I've replaced both power window motors, but all in all, it hasn't failed me hard, and nothing major has gone wrong. For its age, it's reliable, but nothing close to a Toyota, haha! Would I buy it again? Well, I'd get the older models from 90-98. I've heard they're built better.

4000 miles and minor problems. Both rear windows and seals have been replaced due to poor design with wind noise. The vibration/buzz in the gas pedal is currently being worked on, but I know there is a TSB from GM on this. This truck is really fun to drive, it's smooth and has plenty of power from the reliable 4.3L engine. My wife loves the room and the feel of a truck in the city.

I've had the pleasure of owning 6 Chevrolet pickups over the years, an 81, 83, 84, 87, 95, and 98. They were all great trucks that took a beating from me and kept on going. However, my seventh pickup, a 2003 Z71, has been a bit of a disappointment. While it had only 40000 miles when I bought it, I've already had to replace both front wheel bearings, the brakes (rear twice), transmission, two alignments, instrument panel cluster, radio, tie rods, and now it has a growling sound that drives me crazy. I'm a bit hesitant to push it too hard, as it doesn't seem as sturdy as my previous trucks. I'm disappointed to say that this will be the last GM vehicle that I will ever buy!

As a contractor, you've worked this truck hard, towing and hauling with it, and it has never let you down. It's comfortable, has a good ride, and nice features. Like all GM trucks of this era, the speedometer leaves a lot to be desired, but with 170,000 miles on it, it's still rock solid.

During the warranty period, I observed that the vehicle was consuming oil during cranking. Despite the dealer's oil consumption tests indicating that the engine was using 1 to 2 quarts of oil for every 3 to 4k miles driven, Chevrolet claimed that usage of up to 1 quart of oil per 1000 miles is within spec. However, I believe that the use of three to four quarts of oil between my normal changes is not acceptable. Unfortunately, Chevrolet was not willing to offer any goodwill deal to address the issue. As a long-time customer of GM vehicles, I am disappointed in Chevrolet's lack of customer service and commitment to their products. Regrettably, this experience has led me to decide that this will be my last Chevy.
