History
The Silverado nameplate made its debut for the 1975 model year, becoming the top trim level on all Chevrolet C/K trucks, slotted above Custom Deluxe, Scottsdale, and Cheyenne. For the 1968 model year (seven years before the Silverado), GMC C/K trucks used variations of the Sierra name (Sierra, Sierra Classic, Sierra Grande, and High Sierra). Even after the C/K series officially ended, GM still uses the CK and the CC in their current model codes, to denote a two-wheel drive (CC), and four-wheel drive (CK).
For the 1988 GMT400 model architecture, Chevrolet retained the C/K model nomenclature, with GMC branding its full-size line as Sierras. While sharing the same body and chassis, the model chronology of the Silverado and Sierra are different, with five generations of the Sierra, while four of the Silverado.
In 2018, at the NTEA Work Truck Show in Indianapolis, Indiana, Chevrolet unveiled the first medium-duty Silverado, expanding the model line to a 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD chassis cab. Largely the successor to the 2003–2009 GMT560 chassis, the medium-duty trucks are exclusive to Chevrolet, with no plans for an equivalent GMC version. Instead, Navistar International (now partnering with GM) would sell the medium-duty trucks as a rebadged counterpart, called the CV. This is in fact a very similar nod to how the Avalanche did not have a GMC Yukon–based equivalent, but instead, Cadillac would take its place as the former's rebadged counterpart, the Escalade EXT.

This is the most powerful truck I've ever owned! The chassis is also the stiffest, which is great. It's much better than my '03 F150, which I got rid of after 7 months for the '01 Chev. Although I've had some issues with the A/C and cold start knock, I got those fixed. The tie rods and steering system needed fixing at 70,000 miles, which was expensive without warranty.

I bought this truck used with 20K miles on it. So far, I've put 7300 miles on it and it has been an excellent vehicle. If you're looking for a vehicle that gets 45 MPG, this might not be the one for you! However, compared to Ford and Dodge, the power and mileage are great. I'm averaging 17 MPG around town and about 20 MPG on interstates. I haven't had any problems with it so far and have only spent money on maintenance items. I would definitely buy another one!

The truck has been performing exceptionally well. With only the battery and rear brakes replaced, the 5.3 motor has proven to have ample power. I have even added a cold air box, mass air flow sensor, and a cat back exhaust, which has given it an extra boost. Towing has been a breeze. However, I have experienced some cold start knocks (lifters). While the brakes have been a real issue, the Firestone tires were also quite poor, especially in wet conditions. Overall, the truck has been a reliable and powerful vehicle.

I absolutely love my '01 Chevy Silverado 1500! Even though it has 233950 miles on it, it still runs better than any Ford I've ever owned. The only issue is that the oil pan and rear main seal leak, but we haven't had any major problems. We did have to replace the starter once at 205xxx miles, but it wasn't a big deal. The transmission has been flawless. It's a tough truck and pretty comfortable too, although the back seat is a bit cramped. The bed is a good size and doesn't fall apart like a Ford would. I trust this truck completely and would drive it across the country without a worry in my mind. It's incredibly reliable and powerful, and the 4x4 works better than any Ford 4x4 I've ever driven.

You've made a great choice with the Silverado! It's been a reliable truck for me with only minor issues like the air conditioning belt and brakes, which were easily fixed. The captain chairs are a real plus, especially with the heated seats in the winter. The only downside is that the back seat doesn't have enough legroom for my growing kids. Despite that, I've been able to pull a 5,000lb horse trailer in the mountains without any issues. I'm excited to upgrade to the 2500HD crew cab one day. If you're looking for a great family truck, the Silverado is definitely worth considering!

The truck started experiencing a knock in the motor while still under the 3yr-36,000 mile warranty. After contacting GMC, they advised taking it to another dealer who replaced the lifters. The truck was quiet for 2-3 weeks, but then developed a cold engine knock. Despite GMC sending a 100,000 mile warranty, they refuse to fix the problem and their dealer says they will only fix it when it blows up. While they claim the noise is normal, I strongly disagree. This experience has led me to the decision to never purchase a GM product again, and I hope to prevent others from making the same mistake.
