History
The Silverado nameplate made its debut for the 1975 model year, becoming the top trim level on all Chevrolet C/K trucks, slotted above Custom Deluxe, Scottsdale, and Cheyenne. For the 1968 model year (seven years before the Silverado), GMC C/K trucks used variations of the Sierra name (Sierra, Sierra Classic, Sierra Grande, and High Sierra). Even after the C/K series officially ended, GM still uses the CK and the CC in their current model codes, to denote a two-wheel drive (CC), and four-wheel drive (CK).
For the 1988 GMT400 model architecture, Chevrolet retained the C/K model nomenclature, with GMC branding its full-size line as Sierras. While sharing the same body and chassis, the model chronology of the Silverado and Sierra are different, with five generations of the Sierra, while four of the Silverado.
In 2018, at the NTEA Work Truck Show in Indianapolis, Indiana, Chevrolet unveiled the first medium-duty Silverado, expanding the model line to a 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD chassis cab. Largely the successor to the 2003–2009 GMT560 chassis, the medium-duty trucks are exclusive to Chevrolet, with no plans for an equivalent GMC version. Instead, Navistar International (now partnering with GM) would sell the medium-duty trucks as a rebadged counterpart, called the CV. This is in fact a very similar nod to how the Avalanche did not have a GMC Yukon–based equivalent, but instead, Cadillac would take its place as the former's rebadged counterpart, the Escalade EXT.

I have always driven Chevy trucks and they have always been reliable workhorses. However, I have noticed that the 2001 model has given me more issues than the older ones. For instance, I had to replace the fuel pump in the tank, which was quite expensive through the dealer. Additionally, I experienced a bad knock on cold start-up, had to replace the power window motor, the whole brake system, fuel injectors, and do some front-end work. I even had to put in a new transmission. Although I work my truck hard, I do not trash it, and for what they cost, I expect them to perform like the older models. Overall, I am a bit disappointed in Chevy.

Your 01 Silverado Ext. Cab 1500 2wd 4.8L sounds like an amazing work truck! It's impressive that you've had it for over 20 years and it's still going strong with 407k miles. Even though the Arizona heat has taken a toll on the interior, it's great to hear that you've had no major repairs other than a few replacements. The fact that you've never changed the transmission fluid or fluid in the rear differential and only changed the spark plugs 3 times is a testament to the quality of Chevy's 283 motor. It's no wonder people were tripping over each other to buy it when you posted it for sale. You definitely got your money's worth and then some! This is a great truck! It has a very high build quality and still drives like a new truck. Although there are some usual problems with the parking brake dying early and at about 70000 miles echoes of the 'piston slap' problem, it's still a fantastic vehicle. I did have to replace the brakes at 120000 miles, which cost $1300 partially due to problems complicated by the parking brake issue. At 125000 miles, there is a minor but annoying rear main seal leak, but overall, I'm still very happy with this truck!

I bought the truck as-is and needed to make a few minor repairs, which I did myself. I replaced the radiator, ignition cylinder, and heater blower motor resistor circuit. Although I'm not a mechanic, I found the repairs to be quite manageable. I'm really impressed with how smoothly the truck rides. The 4.8 V8 engine is great - it's quiet, powerful, and runs smoothly. I also appreciate that the truck doesn't sit as high as the Dodge Ram of the same year, which makes it easier to load. Despite having 177k miles on it, the truck doesn't feel like it's been driven that much. I only use it occasionally, but based on other reports I've seen, the high mileage shouldn't be a concern. I really like the simple design of the truck and prefer the styling of this generation over anything else. I was asked to update my review, and although I don't drive the truck much, I can say that it has been running well since I bought it in 9/2013. It has just under 180k miles on it. The only issue I've had was when my son borrowed it and it stalled while idling in line. It started back up fine, though. Also, the emergency brake light sometimes doesn't work. I changed the oil and filter myself, which was easy to do once I got under the truck. I had to remove the driver's side running tube to do so. The engine still runs like new. I was asked again to update my review, but unfortunately, I had to trade the truck in due to a job change. I also traded in my SUV for a larger one. The silver lining is that my son bought the truck from the dealership as-is, and he loves it. He's fixed a few minor things that I didn't bother with, and he's put around 188k miles on it. The only somewhat major repair he had to make was when the plastic coupler that goes over the heater core valves in the firewall broke, with some of it inside the hose. Fortunately, he was close to home and didn't lose much antifreeze. He fixed it himself, and YouTube was a great resource for him. He used to have a Dodge Ram with the 5.9 V8, but he says that the Silverado gets much better fuel economy. I now have a Honda Pilot, but the fuel economy is hardly better than the Silverado.Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share that I'm considering trading in my Honda for an older small car and a full-size Chevy or GMC pickup truck. My son actually had a Silverado for over 210k miles, but unfortunately, rust caused one of the shocks to break loose. He still drove it for a while, but eventually got another truck and sold the Silverado to someone local. In fact, I've seen it at least once! As for me, I ended up trading in my Honda Pilot for a 2002 Silverado in 2019.

This is a fantastic truck! It has a comfortable and handsome design, and an impressive combined mileage of 17.5 MPG. The steering is powerful and precise, and it also has an automatic transfer case. Although there are a few minor issues, such as a cold start knock and a weak intermediate steering shaft, these have been replaced. Additionally, there have been some reports of bad fuel gauge sending units, but this has not happened to me yet. Overall, this is the best truck I have ever driven, and the minor issues are outweighed by the many positives. GM should have addressed these minor issues from the start, but they do not detract from the overall quality of the truck.

The camshaft and lifter failure at 71K was due to defective parts installed at manufacture, as confirmed by the independent repair shop. Despite diligent maintenance, including oil changes and routine servicing, the issue took 70K miles to manifest itself. Unfortunately, GM has stated that they cannot provide any assistance with the $4500 repair costs as the vehicle is off warranty. Additionally, the front shimmy issue has been troublesome since the vehicle was new and has been confirmed as unfixable by Chevy, Les Schwab Tires, and the independent repair shop. This is the third new Chevy truck I have owned, but it will be the last.

I'm disappointed with the quality of American-made vehicles. Unfortunately, I've had to take my car in for repairs quite frequently. Here's a list of the issues I've experienced: rear leaf spring pads, a squeak under acceleration, a leaking front differential housing, selective operation of heated seats, lumbar support that moves with the door open and engine running (believe it or not), a service 4WD light, engine misfire (due to bad fuel injectors and pressure regulator). What's frustrating is that the service writers often dismiss these issues as common and offer a quick fix. I hope that GM will continue to work on improving their products. Unfortunately, my engine still shudders and clunks at idle and uses oil.

The car has been driven for 24,000 miles since it was bought with 29,000 miles on it. During this time, the fuel pump and a rear brake caliper had to be replaced. The v6 engine has proven to be reliable and powerful enough for everyday driving. However, the fuel mileage is not better than the v8 engine. The 4x4 system has performed well in mud and snow. The tire wear, steering, and ride comfort have all been excellent. Overall, I am satisfied with my purchase, but if I were to buy again, I would opt for the v8 engine. Although I initially chose the v6 due to its lower sticker price, I am not saving any money on gas as it uses just as much fuel as the v8 Chevy's I had previously owned.

We used to own an 89 Chevy pickup and absolutely loved it. Even after 110k miles, it still ran like a dream. It was a very reliable machine. However, when we bought the '01, we assumed that Chevy would continue the tradition. Unfortunately, the engine started making a knocking sound from day one, which the dealership mechanic claimed not to hear. To this day, the sound persists. The performance is sluggish and the gas mileage is disappointing. We were hoping for better gas mileage, especially with such slow performance. We miss our '89 p/u truck; it was such a great vehicle.

The drive train, noise, and transmission issues are unsatisfactory. Despite attempts by both the dealer and factory to fix the problem, they were unable to do so. It is unacceptable for them to make excuses and claim that the banging and metallic noises are normal. It is worth noting that Ford has a reputation for having a tight transmission and 4x4 linkup.
