History

The Silverado nameplate made its debut for the 1975 model year, becoming the top trim level on all Chevrolet C/K trucks, slotted above Custom Deluxe, Scottsdale, and Cheyenne. For the 1968 model year (seven years before the Silverado), GMC C/K trucks used variations of the Sierra name (Sierra, Sierra Classic, Sierra Grande, and High Sierra). Even after the C/K series officially ended, GM still uses the CK and the CC in their current model codes, to denote a two-wheel drive (CC), and four-wheel drive (CK).

For the 1988 GMT400 model architecture, Chevrolet retained the C/K model nomenclature, with GMC branding its full-size line as Sierras. While sharing the same body and chassis, the model chronology of the Silverado and Sierra are different, with five generations of the Sierra, while four of the Silverado.

In 2018, at the NTEA Work Truck Show in Indianapolis, Indiana, Chevrolet unveiled the first medium-duty Silverado, expanding the model line to a 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD chassis cab. Largely the successor to the 2003–2009 GMT560 chassis, the medium-duty trucks are exclusive to Chevrolet, with no plans for an equivalent GMC version. Instead, Navistar International (now partnering with GM) would sell the medium-duty trucks as a rebadged counterpart, called the CV. This is in fact a very similar nod to how the Avalanche did not have a GMC Yukon–based equivalent, but instead, Cadillac would take its place as the former's rebadged counterpart, the Escalade EXT.

Multiple time I have had my battery/alternator checked after these instances and my battery/alternator passes with flying colors. Luckily each time it has happened I haven’t been in traffic, but if another car was around or expecting me to make a full turn, it could have run into me while my truck just shut down in the middle of the turn. I had to restart the whole car to be able to move out of the way. These instances have happened intermittently and seemingly at random. When I took it to a dealer, they didn’t know what it was and couldn’t reproduce it. Insurance, police or other have not inspected it - again it happens intermittently. There haven’t been warning lamps prior to these instances, but when it happens it says stabilitrak warning or another message on the screen as it shuts down completely.

Although the engine runs roughly, we are able to drive it at low speeds. Currently, the engine light comes on intermittently. This past few weeks, it happened again while traveling 65 mph on a busy freeway. The engine slowed down and I was able to get it up to a max of 30 mph until I could get to a frontage road. We made it back to our destination at 30 - 40mph using flashers at some points because the engine felt as if it was going to stall. This issue could result in a rear end collision and serious injury. Although the engine runs roughly, we are able to drive it at low speeds. Currently, the engine light comes on intermittently. We will be returning the truck for service. However, we are not confident that the problem will be resolved.

  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2015-2020 Chevrolet Suburban, Tahoe, and GMC Yukon, and 2014-2018 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles equipped with a 5.3-liter engine, a 3.08-ratio rear axle and four-wheel drive. If a wheel-speed sensor fails, while the vehicle is traveling between 41 and 60 mph in four-wheel or automatic mode, the Electronic-Brake Control Module (EBCM) software may activate the driveline-protection system.
  • Consequence: Unintended activation of the driveline-protection system will cause unintended braking on the wheel on the opposite side of the failed sensor, causing the vehicle to pull to one side unexpectedly, increasing the risk of a crash.

  • Consequence: If the brake pedal becomes loose or inoperative, the driver may be unable to stop the vehicle by using the brake pedal. Additionally, a loose pedal may also interfere with the accelerator pedal. Either condition may increase the risk of a crash.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will add adhesive to the nut and reinstall the nut with increased tightness, free of charge. The recall began October 3, 2018. The flexible steel cable connecting the driver's seat belt to the outboard side of the seat may be repeatedly bent over the seat side shield as the driver enters and exits the vehicle causing the cable to fatigue and separate.
  • Consequence: If the pretensioner cable becomes fatigued or breaks, the driver may not be properly restrained in the event of a crash, increasing their risk of injury.

During this test, deployment of the frontal air bags and the seat belt pretensioners would not occur in the event of a crash.
  • Consequence: A failure of the front air bags or seat belt pretensioners to deploy in the event of a crash necessitating deployment increases the risk of injury to the driver and front passenger.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will reflash the SDM software. Vehicles that have had a previous air bag deployment will have the SDM replaced. These repairs will be performed free of charge. The recall began on August 4, 2017.     I purchased a 2016 Z71 Midnight Edition Silverado brand new, but unfortunately, from day one, the transmission made clunking and banging noises at non-demanding speeds. It seems to work better under heavy demand or when the truck is really being put to work. I have read countless reviews of people having the same problem, and I couldn't agree more. The transmission doesn't seem to know what gear it should be in and tries to shift into overdrive every chance it gets, mostly in moments when it should be holding in a lower gear. This results in unnecessary bogging, clunking, and banging high RPM downshifts. I understand that Chevy isn't known for their transmissions, but I thought they would have figured it out by now. Unfortunately, it seems like they haven't. As someone who has always been a Ford guy, this only Chevy purchase has left me disappointed. The only other issue I have is that the on-board screen in the truck is nice and huge, but I couldn't figure out how to sync GPS up to it, so it's only used as a music/call screen. On a positive note, I must say that Chevy deserves credit for the comfort and styling of the truck. It definitely rides better than any Ford I've ever had, and the inside/outside styling is beautiful, with full-blown LED everything, which I really like. I just hope that Chevy will recall the truck to fix the transmission issue or put more R&D into solving the problem for future models.

    I purchased a used 2016 LT Z71 4x4 with 30,000 miles on it. Unfortunately, at 40,000 miles, the A/C stopped working due to a well-known condenser issue with GMC. Although Chevrolet did not recall the problem, they did offer some financial assistance for the repair. Now, at 80,000 miles, the transmission has failed. I have only ever towed a golf cart with this vehicle, so this is an unexpected and expensive repair costing $3,800. As someone who has owned Chevrolets for 32 years, I am disappointed with this 2016 model and it has made me hesitant to purchase another. If you are considering a 2016 Silverado, I recommend doing your research as these trucks seem to have multiple problems that are not cheap to fix.

    I've owned two Chevy Vans in the last 18 years and have never had any issues with them. Recently, I wanted to purchase a truck to pull my boat and decided to stick with Chevy due to their impressive track record. However, I have noticed that the truck shifts hard in the low gears, which is a bit concerning. When cold starting the truck, it jerks into gear and downshifting is harder than it should be. Ideally, downshifting should be seamless. I took it to the dealer and their mechanic was able to replicate the issue in the parking lot. However, he assured me that it should smooth out over time. Despite this issue, I absolutely love the truck. It's incredibly comfortable and provides a smooth ride both on the highway and around town. Additionally, the gas mileage is impressive.

Despite spending over $400 on repairs, the AC still blows hot air during the hot and humid Georgia summer. I'm currently waiting for the transmission repairs to be completed. It would be great if Chevy could issue a recall for these issues, as several mechanics have told me that they are common problems. Unfortunately, GM seems to be prioritizing profits over customer satisfaction, unlike Ford which takes responsibility for defective trucks. I hope that GM will follow Ford's example and start issuing recalls for these issues. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

    I've had five brand new trucks before this one, but unfortunately, my 2016 Chevy Silverado LTZ has been the worst of them all. Since I purchased it, I have experienced nothing but problems. Despite taking it to two different Chevy dealerships, the issue has yet to be resolved. Although they have identified the problem, they are unable to fix it at this time due to some kind of issue with the gasoline. I am disappointed with both the dealerships and General Motors, the company that manufactured the truck. I reached out to them for assistance, but unfortunately, they were unable to provide a solution within the promised 48 hours. While they have acknowledged the issue, they are still working on finding a solution. In the meantime, I am left with a truck that does not perform as it should. As a loyal customer of Chevy for ten years, I am disappointed with the way this situation has been handled. I am considering trading this truck for another brand, but I hope that General Motors will take steps to improve their customer service in the future. -David Cazares

    Hi there! I recently picked up my new Silverado 1500 and noticed that Airplay was missing. I asked the salesmen why it wasn't included since it was one of my requested features (and also standard on my trim level). They explained that someone had ordered the truck without it, but assured me that I could bring it in the next day for an update. The following day, I called to get an update and was informed that due to supply issues, my truck did not come with CarPlay and that GM may make it right some day. While I did receive a $200 credit, I was really hoping for CarPlay. GM, could you please make it right? Thank you for your help!
