2012 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 problems
The Chevrolet Silverado is a range of trucks manufactured by General Motors under the Chevrolet brand. Introduced for the 1999 model year, the Silverado is the successor to the long-running Chevrolet C/K model line. Taking its name from the top trim level from the Chevrolet C/K series, the Silverado is offered as a series of full-size pickup trucks, chassis cab trucks, and medium-duty trucks. The fourth generation of the model line was introduced for the 2019 model year.
The Chevrolet Silverado shares mechanical commonality with the identically related GMC Sierra; GMC ended the use of the C/K nomenclature a model generation prior to Chevrolet. In Mexico, high-trim level versions of the Silverado use the Chevrolet Cheyenne name (not to be confused with the 2003 concept). Competing against the Ford F-Series, Ram Pickup, Toyota Tundra, and Nissan Titan, the Silverado is among the best-selling vehicles in the United States, having sold over 12 million trucks since its introduction in 1998 as a 1999 model year.
History
The Silverado nameplate made its debut for the 1975 model year, becoming the top trim level on all Chevrolet C/K trucks, slotted above Custom Deluxe, Scottsdale, and Cheyenne. For the 1968 model year (seven years before the Silverado), GMC C/K trucks used variations of the Sierra name (Sierra, Sierra Classic, Sierra Grande, and High Sierra). Even after the C/K series officially ended, GM still uses the CK and the CC in their current model codes, to denote a two-wheel drive (CC), and four-wheel drive (CK).
For the 1988 GMT400 model architecture, Chevrolet retained the C/K model nomenclature, with GMC branding its full-size line as Sierras. While sharing the same body and chassis, the model chronology of the Silverado and Sierra are different, with five generations of the Sierra, while four of the Silverado.
In 2018, at the NTEA Work Truck Show in Indianapolis, Indiana, Chevrolet unveiled the first medium-duty Silverado, expanding the model line to a 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD chassis cab. Largely the successor to the 2003–2009 GMT560 chassis, the medium-duty trucks are exclusive to Chevrolet, with no plans for an equivalent GMC version. Instead, Navistar International (now partnering with GM) would sell the medium-duty trucks as a rebadged counterpart, called the CV. This is in fact a very similar nod to how the Avalanche did not have a GMC Yukon–based equivalent, but instead, Cadillac would take its place as the former's rebadged counterpart, the Escalade EXT.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-12
- VIN: 1GCRKSE73CZ
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I took my truck for a routine service with the dealership. The Service Rep told me that my truck frame was rusting out to the point where it's near unsafe to drive. He told me it'd be 15k to replace the frame. I find it incredible that a 12 year old American made vehicle can have the frame rust out so fast and to such a degree without the dealership or manufacturer knowing that there is a potential safety risk in their product.
AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-09
- VIN: 1GCRKSE7XCZ
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: Airbag light came on indicating an issue. Went to dealer and the codes that came up are B0030 (Passenger Instrument Panel Air Bag Deployment Loop Stage 2 Short to Ground) and B0413 (Temperature Control 1 Feed back Circuit Actuator Stuck). It cost $597.67 to have a new airbag installed. I worry others couldn't afford this and it should be covered by the mfg due to the safety risk created from the vendor creating airbags that do not last the life of the vehicle.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-05-10
- VIN: 1GCPKSE75CF
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: The trailer hitch assembly has rusted to the point where it is barely being held to truck frame. It is available for inspection (I do not know how to attach photos to this notice but can e-mail if provided with your address) Have been advised by Chevrolet dealership service manager not to use the hitch under any circumstance. Do not know if any other portion of frame assembly is compromised, nor can this be determined accurately by me. But if other portions of the frame are “rusted out “ the danger is grave: the tubular structural element to which the hitch assembly is attached is the same diameter and thickness as the tubular structural supports which link the lengthwise H elements of the vehicle frame. It is therefore reasonable to conclude these structural components may lack structural integrity due to possible rust and perforations Concluding; 1. the hitch assembly is an integral part the vehicle’s structure. Failure would threaten the life of occupants as a trailer broke loose and swerved.. Others in proximity to the flailing or loose trailer would also be threatened. 2. Given the affected element is similar to other structural iparts used in the vehicle’s frame, failure of their structural integrity may cause failure of a portion of the frame, leading to additional risks to occupants, surrounding humans, vehicles and property. 3. The rusted assembly is not easily visible so that a warning to owners highlighting this potential risk to life should be sent ASAP. 4. Inspection of undercarriages of this and similar vehicles should be mandated to determine the existence of rust-damaging structural integrity. 5. Proper metallurgy/coating/reinforcement or redesign should be mandated of manufacturers.

- Summary: I bought this truck new and the frame is rotted. I have 93000 miles and it is garaged year round. I also purchased a rust preventive electronic device with the vehicle. I have noticed wax coating that has come off in the past and sprayed with fluid film. I just found a hole yesterday and looked further and believe after doing some research that this is a constant problem with the Silverado and GM has not been held accountable for inferior frame rails. My truck body is in excellent shape for the year. I understand I live in a state that teats their roads unnescessarily, but this is absolutely absurd. Toyota had the same issue and took care of their customers Gm should do the same.Thank you

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-05-03
- VIN: 1GCRKSE7XCZ
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Rotten frame. Trucks body and other components are in very good to fair condition. Found out after I bought it GMC is having major issues with frame failure and have not yet remedied the issue. I think they should be required to fix these frames or buy back the vehicles at a fair price to both parties. This is a major safety issue especially if either the owner is not aware or does not have the means to simply eat the cost of a truck that cost anywhere form 15,000 to the mid 20,000s. It is not right to the consumer to sell vehicles that can't structurally make it past 100,000 mile mark. Also I would like to report that dealers (at least the one I bought it off of) are not notifying customers of these issues and also in my case undercoating over the rotten frame to pass a basic consumers inspection. Not good for road safety and not good for the consumer.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-10-05
- VIN: 1GCRKTE72CZ

- Summary: 2012 Chevy Silverado rotted frame. The contact stated that the sway bar was so rusted that it broke in half and was replaced. The front struts were also super rusted. The contact does not feel comfortable driving the vehicle until the issues are addressed.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-01
- VIN: 3GCPKSE72CG
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Had an inspection done and was told that the frame is partially rusted through. We took it to our dealership to be fixed and was told there was nothing they could do because Chevy does not want the liability of fixing rusted frames for its 2010-2013 models. I also found this to be true with local body shops in my area so basically our 11,000.00 vehicle is junk. After my research, this seems to be a common problem with Chevy and should be investigated. They should be ashamed of their business tactics by putting people's lives in jeopardy

I'm so glad you decided to purchase this truck! It sounds like you made a great choice with the 5.3 ltr engine and the new 6 speed auto upgrade. With an average of 17 miles combined and 19 to 20 on the highway, you're definitely getting your money's worth. The LT with allstar package is a fantastic combination of upgrades, and I'm thrilled to hear that you're enjoying the ride. It's great to know that the truck is solidly built and comfortable on long trips.

Rest assured that the factory installed remote start option is the only one compatible with the RemoteLink app for smartphones. While the dealer installed option may not work with the app, it still provides a convenient way to start your vehicle remotely. Both GM and OnStar have confirmed that they have no plans to make the dealer installed option compatible with the app in the future. It's important to note that the key fobs for the dealer installed option are programmed at the dealer through a factory download direct to the vehicle. Thank you for choosing the Silverado and its reliable remote start options.

If you're considering purchasing this Silverado with leather seating, I highly recommend adding heated seats. I've had the vehicle for three years now and have only needed to perform regular maintenance - no unusual repairs required.

Hey there! I noticed that you own 5 Silverado LTZ-LT-2-LT Z71s, all with the 5.3 V8 cast iron block. That's really impressive! These trucks are known for their durability and reliability.

I have a 2012 Silverado crew cab, 4x4, LTZ, with 1300 miles on it, and it has been performing exceptionally well. The mixed city and highway MPG is around 16.5, which is impressive. However, I have noticed that the Goodyear Eagle tires that came with the vehicle are not up to par and have caused me to slide several times. It is disappointing that a $50K vehicle would come with such cheap tires. Additionally, the interior gauges are outdated and have not been updated since 2007. Despite these minor issues, I am confident that this truck will continue to be an excellent choice.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2012 Chevy Silverado Crew Cab. I've loved it ever since I bought it brand new! However, I've been having some trouble with the tire pressure sensor ever since I had my tires replaced. Even though the tire pressure is fine, the sensor keeps going off. I took it in for general maintenance and they recalibrated a sensor, which worked for a while. Unfortunately, the problem came back and now my truck cuts off and back on while driving when the sensor is on. It's pretty scary! I've talked to the dealership about it, but they say there's no recall. I think there might be an issue with the electrical system. They want to charge about $200 to possibly fix it, but only if they can get it to replicate the issue. What do you think I should do?

I really like this truck, but I have noticed that it lacks low-end power and doesn't get great fuel mileage. Despite having 305 hp, the torque management system prevents me from having the power I need when starting off. However, once I reach 30 mph, it runs great. I have also noticed that it struggles when pulling a boat up a steep ramp or when trying to pull out in front of someone. Additionally, I am only getting 13 mpg, which is lower than the advertised 17 to 23 mpg. Although I am disappointed with these aspects, I still enjoy driving this truck. If I had known about the low-end power and fuel mileage issues, I may have considered purchasing a Ford instead. I hope that GM can improve these aspects in future models. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

I purchased my truck brand new on 6/21/12 with only 15 miles on it. Unfortunately, I have noticed a spot of rust on the roof and two spots on the passenger side of the truck (back passenger door and front fender) that have dust in the clearcoat, causing a bubble. I contacted GM two days after my purchase, but have been passed around from person to person without a resolution. After much back and forth, they have offered to paint my truck, but have warned me that the finish may not match the original exactly. While I appreciate their effort, I believe that a new truck would be a more appropriate solution. Unfortunately, I have not received the level of customer service that I had hoped for and have been left feeling frustrated.

Hi there! I was wondering if anyone else has experienced the issue of their front tires appearing to have chunks taken out or 'peeling'.

I have found that my 2012 Silverado is not as satisfactory as my 2006 Ram. Despite both being half ton 4x4 4 door trucks, the Silverado's ride is less comfortable and its response to throttle input is not as smooth as the Dodge. I am disappointed with my purchase and hope to find a better solution in the future.
