2010 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Silverado is a range of trucks manufactured by General Motors under the Chevrolet brand. Introduced for the 1999 model year, the Silverado is the successor to the long-running Chevrolet C/K model line. Taking its name from the top trim level from the Chevrolet C/K series, the Silverado is offered as a series of full-size pickup trucks, chassis cab trucks, and medium-duty trucks. The fourth generation of the model line was introduced for the 2019 model year.

The Chevrolet Silverado shares mechanical commonality with the identically related GMC Sierra; GMC ended the use of the C/K nomenclature a model generation prior to Chevrolet. In Mexico, high-trim level versions of the Silverado use the Chevrolet Cheyenne name (not to be confused with the 2003 concept). Competing against the Ford F-Series, Ram Pickup, Toyota Tundra, and Nissan Titan, the Silverado is among the best-selling vehicles in the United States, having sold over 12 million trucks since its introduction in 1998 as a 1999 model year.

History

The Silverado nameplate made its debut for the 1975 model year, becoming the top trim level on all Chevrolet C/K trucks, slotted above Custom Deluxe, Scottsdale, and Cheyenne. For the 1968 model year (seven years before the Silverado), GMC C/K trucks used variations of the Sierra name (Sierra, Sierra Classic, Sierra Grande, and High Sierra). Even after the C/K series officially ended, GM still uses the CK and the CC in their current model codes, to denote a two-wheel drive (CC), and four-wheel drive (CK).

For the 1988 GMT400 model architecture, Chevrolet retained the C/K model nomenclature, with GMC branding its full-size line as Sierras. While sharing the same body and chassis, the model chronology of the Silverado and Sierra are different, with five generations of the Sierra, while four of the Silverado.

In 2018, at the NTEA Work Truck Show in Indianapolis, Indiana, Chevrolet unveiled the first medium-duty Silverado, expanding the model line to a 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD chassis cab. Largely the successor to the 2003–2009 GMT560 chassis, the medium-duty trucks are exclusive to Chevrolet, with no plans for an equivalent GMC version. Instead, Navistar International (now partnering with GM) would sell the medium-duty trucks as a rebadged counterpart, called the CV. This is in fact a very similar nod to how the Avalanche did not have a GMC Yukon–based equivalent, but instead, Cadillac would take its place as the former's rebadged counterpart, the Escalade EXT.

Negative 2010 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 car reviews

  1. Lloyd Johnston 2025-05-13

I purchased my truck three years ago with 64k miles on it. It had a slight tapping noise that would come and go in spurts of two or three taps. I took it to a GM dealer who informed me that it was injector noise. I have always been diligent with maintenance, changing the oil every 5k miles and servicing the vehicle before the change oil light came on (around 9k miles). Unfortunately, at 94k miles, I had to replace the displacement on demand lifters, a known issue with GM vehicles that required tearing the engine down to the block. Additionally, the alternator went out at around 100k miles and I experienced issues with spark plugs cracking the porcelain every 2k miles. The truck also consumes oil, which is another known issue that GM has yet to address. While the truck may look nice and be comfortable to drive, it has proven to be unreliable. As a die-hard Chevy fan, this experience has shaken my faith in new GM vehicles and any vehicle with DOD.

  2. Roosevelt Lang 2025-05-07

I had some issues with my 2010 Silverado's build quality. The bumper didn't fit properly, but the dealership manager was very helpful and adjusted it for me. Unfortunately, it seems to be a common problem due to poor design and execution. Additionally, there are a few dents that appear to have happened during the truck's construction. I also noticed that the transmission is slow to downshift at lower speeds, which may be an attempt to improve fuel efficiency by staying in a higher gear. Despite these issues, I have decided to trade in my Silverado for a Tundra. It's been a tough decision, but I'm excited for what the future holds.

  3. Robert Bartoletti 2025-04-19

I have a 2010 with 88,000 miles. Although I have had some issues with the rear wheel oil seal and front wheel bearings, I have been able to get them repaired for $1100. The brake light switch has gone out twice, but it was an easy fix. The gas mileage is not as good as I would like, with 20/13 on the highway and in the city. However, I still enjoy driving my Chevy. While the transmission shifts continuously at the slightest hill, it is still able to pull a 12' boat (1000 lb). My 2005 Silverado was a great vehicle that lasted 250,000 miles with only minor repairs, and got 21/17 MPG. Recently, the transmission has started shuddering when it changes gears, which may require a repair. Despite these issues, I still appreciate my Chevy and the joy it brings me.

  4. Emerald Quigley 2025-04-17

My truck's estimated mileage is 15 city / 21 hwy. I drive normally and my highway mpg is 16 and city mpg is 12. Unfortunately, this has been my worst truck in terms of fuel consumption. You can even see a dirty black tailpipe. The dealer says that if it does not show codes, it is fine. It drives great and I like it, except for the mpg and the fact that it doesn't have a DIC switch for a Lt. I guess they didn't want to scare us with the estimated mileage it was going to show honestly. If I had known about this poor mpg, I would still be buying Ford trucks. My wife loves it, but at the same time, she hates it because it didn't come with running boards like all my other Fords. Other than that, it is a great truck with poor mpg.

  5. Lexus Schamberger 2025-03-20

After driving my new 2010 Silverado for just 200 miles, I noticed an unbearable interior noise while on the highway. Despite the rear passenger door of the crew cab being closed, the cab vents behind the rear seats were allowing for loud road noise. Additionally, wind noise could be heard through the weather stripping around the doors at highway speed. I immediately went back to the GM dealership to voice my concerns. Although they acknowledged that my vehicle is louder than most, they simply told me that 'they all sound like that'. As a confident customer, I find this answer unacceptable. While the dealership offered to duct tape over the cab vents, I declined as this would make closing the doors difficult.

Positive 2010 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 car reviews

  1. Cyrus Kuvalis 2025-05-20

This review may seem a little premature as I only took delivery of the product one day ago. However, so far I am really impressed with it. It is super nice and rides great. It also has plenty of room to suit my needs.

  2. Carlo Green 2025-04-28

Sometimes a warning appears on the screen indicating that the engine is overheating and the AC has been turned off. However, the AC was not turned on in the first place. Then, the radiator fans start running at a very high speed. When I finally manage to take it to the dealer, it goes back to normal operation. Can you please help me understand what is going on?

  3. Nikko Jaskolski 2025-03-22

Congratulations on finding your dream truck! It sounds like you made a great choice with the 2010 black Silverado LTZ, especially with all the features you were looking for. It's always exciting to upgrade to a vehicle that can better suit your needs, like being able to pull your boat. The ride quality and heated seats sound like a real treat, and it's great to hear that you're happy with the look of the truck. It's understandable that you plan on keeping this one around for a while. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us! By the way, have you had a chance to test out the truck's towing capabilities yet?

  4. Cleveland Luettgen 2025-03-01

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to say that your 2010 Silverado 1500 WT sounds like a great truck! I love the black on black look and the fact that it has power windows/locks/mirrors/cruise and keyless entry. It's awesome that you've had it since 9 miles and now you're up to 9,000 with no problems. That's really impressive! I totally understand what you mean about the regular cab not having a lot of space behind the seat, but it sounds like it's perfect for what you need. It's great that it starts up and runs every morning and that it's quiet on the highway, pulling less than 2,000 rpms at 70 mph. And getting about 16 in town is not bad at all, especially considering the truck weighs over 2 tons. I'm glad to hear that you have great visibility at night too. It's clear that you wanted a reliable truck that could take you past 200k miles and it sounds like you made a great choice with the 4.3 V6. I had that motor before in another vehicle and I loved it too. Thanks for sharing about your truck, it sounds like a really great ride!

  5. Derick Herman 2025-02-12

I wasn't initially in the market for a new vehicle, but the incentives offered ($10k off sticker) and tax credits made it an easy decision. This truck is truly impressive and handles like a dream. After the first tank and a half, I was able to achieve 23.5 mpg while driving at 60-65 mph. The black granite metallic paint, chrome wheels, and chrome running boards give this truck an amazing look. I opted for all of the available features except for the dvd player in the back, and I must say, this truck really spoils you. I am very pleased that my decision to buy American has resulted in such a positive outcome. Congratulations to Detroit!
