History
The Silverado nameplate made its debut for the 1975 model year, becoming the top trim level on all Chevrolet C/K trucks, slotted above Custom Deluxe, Scottsdale, and Cheyenne. For the 1968 model year (seven years before the Silverado), GMC C/K trucks used variations of the Sierra name (Sierra, Sierra Classic, Sierra Grande, and High Sierra). Even after the C/K series officially ended, GM still uses the CK and the CC in their current model codes, to denote a two-wheel drive (CC), and four-wheel drive (CK).
For the 1988 GMT400 model architecture, Chevrolet retained the C/K model nomenclature, with GMC branding its full-size line as Sierras. While sharing the same body and chassis, the model chronology of the Silverado and Sierra are different, with five generations of the Sierra, while four of the Silverado.
In 2018, at the NTEA Work Truck Show in Indianapolis, Indiana, Chevrolet unveiled the first medium-duty Silverado, expanding the model line to a 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD chassis cab. Largely the successor to the 2003–2009 GMT560 chassis, the medium-duty trucks are exclusive to Chevrolet, with no plans for an equivalent GMC version. Instead, Navistar International (now partnering with GM) would sell the medium-duty trucks as a rebadged counterpart, called the CV. This is in fact a very similar nod to how the Avalanche did not have a GMC Yukon–based equivalent, but instead, Cadillac would take its place as the former's rebadged counterpart, the Escalade EXT.

It felt like the vehicle was rear ended by a vehicle behind (it was not) to give some perspective. The last time it happened, the engine shut down but the dash stayed on, and the dash would not turn off, nor would the engine restart. The Chevrolet dealership which it was towed to is stating that the wires from the engine wire harness are chaffing and that the entire engine wire harness needs to be replaced. Additionally, there is a service bulletin posted by GM indicating that the proper repair for this is to replace the engine wire harness and add additional protection, which is a clear indication of faulty engineering to begin with.

Halfway home, the tailgate opened again on its on. The bed was empty so I continued driving home and then closed it again. Later that night, I went out to take the garbage cans out to the street and again noticed the tailgate was down. I again closed it. The next morning, I went to go to work and the tailgate was again down. This would be a serious safety issue if I had items in the bed of my truck and the tailgate opened while driving. I searched this issue online and found that there are recalls for this exact issue in other trims of this truck but the recalls don't cover my trim. I took it to the dealer where I purchased it and they are looking into fixing it. I want you to know that this is an issue as well for this trim.

It has happened to many times. I took it to dealerships. But I had to shop around from county to county to find one that would fix the problem. They dealership wouldn't fix while under warranty. Know that I have finally found a dealership in another county. They have ho parts to fix it. But I'm stuck with a bill that while under warranty the problem exists. The biggest thing is that once I found this dealership. They informed me that this is ongoing problem with GM. They had about 7 others in shop with the same problem and no parts. I don't understand while there is no recall to fix this problem that exists. Trying to make me pay my truck payment plus spend monthly money on renter cars. That's about $2000 a month extra.

This has happened multiple times (e.g., 6-8 times) on single 20-mile drive during heavy downpour . I had the issue checked immediately by the dealer. While they couldn't replicate the exact scenario (they only saw the message once), they did apply a pending software update. Unfortunately, the message reappeared after a few days and continues to come and go sporadically. Several other vehicle owners have also reported this message online, but there seems to be no clear explanation yet. Interestingly, I've noticed the message seems to correlate more frequently with using the 120V outlet for powering accessories. Given this "programmed message" likely triggers based on specific scenarios, there must be identifiable conditions causing it. The message appears at various speeds (city/highway) and during both straight driving and turns. I'm sharing this information to raise awareness and encourage others experiencing this issue to contact their dealership. By reporting similar situations, we can hopefully push for a proper diagnosis and solution.

The contact stated that while driving at approximately 60 MPH, an abnormal, burning plastic odor began to emit from the vehicle coming to a complete stop. As the contact made a left turn, the contact's passenger noticed flames coming from underneath the hood of the engine. The contact and the passenger both immediately exited the vehicle upon pulling off to the shoulder of the road. The contact stated that they were unaware if any warning lights had appeared on the instrument panel during the failure. The contact lifted the hood and saw that flames had engulfed the entire passenger side of the engine bay. Authorities were called to the scene and the fire department extinguished the fire. Both a police report and a fire report were filed. No injuries were reported during the fire incident. The vehicle was initially towed to an independent mechanic but was later towed to an undisclosed location by the contact's insurance company. Both the dealer and the manufacturer were notified of the failure but neither offered the contact any assistance. The vehicle was destroyed as a result of the fire. - Summary: While driving, my Bose radio system went to full volume and would not respond. I tried to turn the radio off but the power button would not work. I tried to turn the volume down using both the volume knob and the volume controls on the steering wheel with negative results. If I turned the volume knob fast enough, I could get the volume to turn down, but I had to continually keep turning the knob counter-clockwise else the volume would return to full volume. I was able to pull off the road and I turned the truck off. I turned the truck back on but the volume was still at full volume. I let the truck sit around 10 minutes and was able to drive it again with normal volume. I called my dealer, Bob Jass Chevrolet in Elburn IL to report the incident. Erin said to bring the truck in to have it reprogrammed. This happened once before - summer 2023. Bob Jass Chevrolet reprogrammed it on [XXX]. Other owners have reported having this issue in the Silverado Truck forums. When this happens it is a major distraction, and it will result in someone crashing because of it. Component: Bose sound system. It is available for inspection with proper notice Safety at risk: The volume goes to full volume instantly without warning and can't be turned down. The truck must rest approximately 10 minutes to return to normal. Problem reproduced: When I reported this to the dealer in June 2023 Erin advised this has happened to other owners and she wasn't surprised. Component inspected: Bob Jass Chevrolet service department has reprogrammed the Bose sound system once before but the problem happened again on [XXX]. - Summary: General Motors, LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2022 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 vehicles. The sensing diagnostic module (SDM) was left in manufacturing mode and not activated at the assembly plant prior to shipment. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard number 208, "Occupant Crash Protection."
- Consequence: An SDM in manufacturing mode will not deploy the vehicle's air bags in a crash, increasing the risk of occupant injury.
- Remedy: Dealers returned the vehicles to the GM assembly plant and the sensing diagnostic modules were activated. The vehicles had not been sold from dealer inventory and therefore no owner letters will be mailed. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020. - Summary: General Motors (GM) has decided that certain 2022 model year Chevrolet Silverado, and GMC Sierra vehicles equipped with an accessory sport bar. The accessory sport bar contains a high-mounted brake light that may not function. In addition, it may block the vehicle's existing high-mounted brake light. As such, these vehicles may fail to conform to Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 108, "lamps, reflective devices, and associated equipment."
- Consequence: An inoperative high-mounted brake light can reduce visibility to other drivers and increase the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Dealers will inspect the installation of the accessory bar and provide the correct vehicle wiring, if necessary, free of charge. Interim owner notification letters advising owners of the safety risk were mailed on August 10, 2022. Owner notification letters were mailed on January 27, 2023. The truck is surprisingly quiet, but you can definitely feel the torque while driving it. It's a unique experience compared to driving a gas-powered vehicle, and for both fuel efficiency and torque, it's truly awesome!

I have 102K miles on this truck. It is exactly 2 years old. I follow GM maintenance schedule as outlined in owners manual exactly and is performed by my local Chevy dealer. I have had no issues of any kind with this truck. It rides great, has adequate power, decent gas milage for large truck (20-21 MPG hi-way driving speed limit, 15 in town). It’s has Z71 package and does great off road, in mud, and in snow. I plan to buy a 2023.

I really appreciate this 2021 Silverado. It's definitely an improvement over the 4.3 V6. It's fuel-efficient and has some impressive speed.

The vehicle is surprisingly strong with the 2.7 turbo 4 cylinder engine! I really appreciate how comfortable and stable the truck is. It's an awesome vehicle for the money.

I am extremely dissatisfied with my recent experience with my 2021 Silverado 1500. Despite being a single female on a busy interstate, my vehicle experienced a lifter fail at 5:30am. After being towed to the dealer, it was there for over a week and only one lifter was replaced despite the service order indicating that all four on the side where the lifter failed needed to be replaced. Additionally, there was no indication that the oil was changed or checked for damage to the cam or metal. Upon starting the vehicle, there was a knocking noise which is unacceptable. As a customer, I am disappointed that GM continued to sell these vehicles despite this known issue. I have contacted a lemon law attorney and will not settle for anything less than a reliable vehicle. If GM cannot rectify this situation, a buy back will be necessary. This experience has left me with a lack of trust in GM and I will not be purchasing their products again.

I recently had a negative experience with my 2021 Silverado 1500 with only 5k miles. I was hesitant to take it on a trip due to some issues I had with the transmission and flashing dash lights. Unfortunately, these issues persisted despite attempts to fix them, causing me a lot of stress and inconvenience. As a result, I made the decision to trade it in for a 1 year old Tundra. I am much happier with my new vehicle and have decided to avoid GM products in the future.

The 4-cylinder engine in this vehicle is impressive, but the transmission seems to struggle with the instant power of the turbo. Despite only having 10,000 miles, there have been issues with slipping, jerking, hard shifting, and laggy performance. It has not been used for towing yet.

My 2021 Silverado LTZ experienced lifter failure resulting in a bent pushrod. The dealer promptly took care of the issue. However, GM only authorized the replacement of the bank which failed at 35,000 miles, despite my repeated requests to replace both banks of lifters. Due to this experience, I lost trust in the truck's reliability beyond the warranty periods and decided to trade it for a Ram 1500 Laramie. I have no plans of returning to GM trucks.
