2006 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 problems

chevrolet logo

The Chevrolet Silverado is a range of trucks manufactured by General Motors under the Chevrolet brand. Introduced for the 1999 model year, the Silverado is the successor to the long-running Chevrolet C/K model line. Taking its name from the top trim level from the Chevrolet C/K series, the Silverado is offered as a series of full-size pickup trucks, chassis cab trucks, and medium-duty trucks. The fourth generation of the model line was introduced for the 2019 model year.

The Chevrolet Silverado shares mechanical commonality with the identically related GMC Sierra; GMC ended the use of the C/K nomenclature a model generation prior to Chevrolet. In Mexico, high-trim level versions of the Silverado use the Chevrolet Cheyenne name (not to be confused with the 2003 concept). Competing against the Ford F-Series, Ram Pickup, Toyota Tundra, and Nissan Titan, the Silverado is among the best-selling vehicles in the United States, having sold over 12 million trucks since its introduction in 1998 as a 1999 model year.

History

The Silverado nameplate made its debut for the 1975 model year, becoming the top trim level on all Chevrolet C/K trucks, slotted above Custom Deluxe, Scottsdale, and Cheyenne. For the 1968 model year (seven years before the Silverado), GMC C/K trucks used variations of the Sierra name (Sierra, Sierra Classic, Sierra Grande, and High Sierra). Even after the C/K series officially ended, GM still uses the CK and the CC in their current model codes, to denote a two-wheel drive (CC), and four-wheel drive (CK).

For the 1988 GMT400 model architecture, Chevrolet retained the C/K model nomenclature, with GMC branding its full-size line as Sierras. While sharing the same body and chassis, the model chronology of the Silverado and Sierra are different, with five generations of the Sierra, while four of the Silverado.

In 2018, at the NTEA Work Truck Show in Indianapolis, Indiana, Chevrolet unveiled the first medium-duty Silverado, expanding the model line to a 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD chassis cab. Largely the successor to the 2003–2009 GMT560 chassis, the medium-duty trucks are exclusive to Chevrolet, with no plans for an equivalent GMC version. Instead, Navistar International (now partnering with GM) would sell the medium-duty trucks as a rebadged counterpart, called the CV. This is in fact a very similar nod to how the Avalanche did not have a GMC Yukon–based equivalent, but instead, Cadillac would take its place as the former's rebadged counterpart, the Escalade EXT.

Hello! We recently purchased a 2006 Chevrolet truck and while we appreciate some of its features, we were a bit disappointed with a few things. We noticed that the truck is worth less than our 2005 Silverado 4dr, and we paid more money for less value on the same truck model of 2005. Additionally, Chevrolet changed the hood, chrome on grill and painted the bumper for $10,000 more. We were also hoping for more standard features and a better interior design. However, we are happy to report that the truck gets great gas mileage, averaging 19.9 to 21.0 miles per gallon on the road and 14.9 to 16.8 around town. We are considering other brands for our next purchase, but we appreciate the money we saved this year and look forward to trading this vehicle in. Thank you for your time, Chevrolet!

I recently purchased a truck with a V6 engine, limited slip differential, A/C, and cruise control for $19,000. While I appreciate the features, I have noticed some issues. The V6 engine can struggle at times, especially when using the cruise control on the interstate. The engine can rev up to 4500 rpm on even small hills, which I find excessive and unacceptable. The warning dinger is also quite loud. Additionally, the limited slip differential and transmission can be clunky, and the placement of the cup holders on the floor is not ideal. Overall, I feel that the truck is mediocre, but I understand that I got what I paid for.

Consider purchasing an older or newer generation truck instead of my current one. The constant computer issues, such as the system running rich and the ABS sensors frequently failing, have cost me more money than the truck is worth. Trust me, it's not worth the hassle.

  4. Cielo Pollich 2024-07-14

The vehicle has some limitations when it comes to towing or hauling heavy loads, and there have been issues with the sensors, transmission slipping and leaking. Despite having only 18k miles, the transmission had to be replaced. In comparison, the Ford F-150 is a superior choice. I recently purchased an 08' F-150 SuperCrew and am very satisfied with it. This is not a personal attack on Chevy, but I have decided to switch to Ford. Thank you for your understanding.

  5. Deion Johnston 2024-07-05

The 2004 truck has had multiple issues, including leaning, a burned out 2nd and 3rd clutch in the transmission, and a speed meter that locks up. Despite rotating the tires every 3-4 thousand miles, the front right tire still went square, which the service department attributed to lack of rotation. It is disappointing that a truck with only 20,000 miles has experienced so many problems. The transmission issues seem to be a common problem among Chevy owners. Perhaps it is time to reconsider the 'like a rock' logo.

I'm so glad you tried them all and found the perfect fit! This truck seems to have everything you need - great for towing, comfortable, and a smooth ride. It's wonderful to hear that it's the best truck you've ever had, even compared to a Ford or Toyota.

  2. Hyman Frami 2024-10-01

I use this truck for a meat packing plant I own. It has a lot of power and hauls meat, my boats, and a huge trailer of deer hides very well. I have never experienced any mechanical failures with it before. Although I did have an accident with it when I hit a deer, causing some damage to the front and fender. Unfortunately, the front bumper and grille were not centered very well and were not fixed properly. However, I do appreciate the acceleration on it. Overall, I really love this truck!

  3. Enos Senger 2024-09-09

I absolutely love my 2006 LT1 Extended cab, shortbox, 5.3LV8 4X4! As someone who has had the pleasure of driving 12 company owned trucks, 8 of which were Chevys, I can confidently say that this vehicle is one of the most reliable I've ever had. Sure, we had to replace the transmission at 88,000 miles, but that's the first major problem I've encountered in over 400,000 miles of driving late model Chevy pickups. Plus, my 2006 still has the original brake pads at 111,000 miles! When driving on flat, freeway roads, I average about 17.5 mpg, and even when light duty towing (boat), I still get around 13mpg. And let me tell you, this truck is incredibly comfortable for long distance driving!

  4. Camren Wisoky 2024-08-16

Basically, I'm a homeowner and a handyman. I needed a truck to drive for sales calls and around the house to haul and do home repairs. This truck is perfect for me! The crew cab is huge, and the short bed is no problem when hauling plywood or drywall. The interior is simple but nice and respectable, much nicer than the Toyota (the other truck I was considering, which has a weak engine at 4.7).

  5. Kyle Hill 2024-06-20

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my Silverado. I bought it brand new back in 2006 and have been driving it non-stop on job sites, hauling heavy materials like block, brick, and cement. It's been a real workhorse for me! I'm proud to say that it just passed 340,000 miles and all I've had to do is replace normal wear items like brakes, batteries, and air cleaners. This is actually my 5th Silverado and I can confidently say that I wouldn't drive anything else. I drive about 800 miles a week going to and from job sites in Southern California and even take it out to the desert on weekends to transport my motorcycles. Thanks for listening!
