The Chevrolet Silverado is a range of trucks manufactured by General Motors under the Chevrolet brand. Introduced for the 1999 model year, the Silverado is the successor to the long-running Chevrolet C/K model line. Taking its name from the top trim level from the Chevrolet C/K series, the Silverado is offered as a series of full-size pickup trucks, chassis cab trucks, and medium-duty trucks. The fourth generation of the model line was introduced for the 2019 model year.

The Chevrolet Silverado shares mechanical commonality with the identically related GMC Sierra; GMC ended the use of the C/K nomenclature a model generation prior to Chevrolet. In Mexico, high-trim level versions of the Silverado use the Chevrolet Cheyenne name (not to be confused with the 2003 concept). Competing against the Ford F-Series, Ram Pickup, Toyota Tundra, and Nissan Titan, the Silverado is among the best-selling vehicles in the United States, having sold over 12 million trucks since its introduction in 1998 as a 1999 model year.

History

The Silverado nameplate made its debut for the 1975 model year, becoming the top trim level on all Chevrolet C/K trucks, slotted above Custom Deluxe, Scottsdale, and Cheyenne. For the 1968 model year (seven years before the Silverado), GMC C/K trucks used variations of the Sierra name (Sierra, Sierra Classic, Sierra Grande, and High Sierra). Even after the C/K series officially ended, GM still uses the CK and the CC in their current model codes, to denote a two-wheel drive (CC), and four-wheel drive (CK).

For the 1988 GMT400 model architecture, Chevrolet retained the C/K model nomenclature, with GMC branding its full-size line as Sierras. While sharing the same body and chassis, the model chronology of the Silverado and Sierra are different, with five generations of the Sierra, while four of the Silverado.

In 2018, at the NTEA Work Truck Show in Indianapolis, Indiana, Chevrolet unveiled the first medium-duty Silverado, expanding the model line to a 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD chassis cab. Largely the successor to the 2003–2009 GMT560 chassis, the medium-duty trucks are exclusive to Chevrolet, with no plans for an equivalent GMC version. Instead, Navistar International (now partnering with GM) would sell the medium-duty trucks as a rebadged counterpart, called the CV. This is in fact a very similar nod to how the Avalanche did not have a GMC Yukon–based equivalent, but instead, Cadillac would take its place as the former's rebadged counterpart, the Escalade EXT.

Common 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 problems

The 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 has reported 864 problems and defects by Silverado 1500 owners, with the worst complaints being transmission, brakes, and engine issues.

Transmission problems are the most frequently reported issue for the 2019 Silverado 1500, with 25 NHTSA complaints. Drivers have reported issues such as the truck slamming into gear, jerking when shifting, shuddering or shaking when accelerating, front differential grinding, and shaking or vibration at highway speed. These issues can be caused by front differential grinding, torque converter failure, or wiring harness problems, leading to the vehicle turning off while driving and not restarting for a few minutes.

Brakes problems are the second most common issue, with 12 NHTSA complaints. Drivers have reported issues such as the anti-lock braking and electronic stability control switching off without warning, causing the brakes to lock up while driving at highway speeds. This can be a serious safety issue and has led to several recalls for the 2019 Silverado 1500.

Engine problems are the third most common issue, with 12 NHTSA complaints. Drivers have reported issues such as unexpected engine stalling and failures while driving due to defective ECM software. This issue has been resolved for most owners by running a software update, which is offered for free by GM to affected owners.

Electrical system problems are also a common issue, with 10 NHTSA complaints. Drivers have reported issues such as the wiring harness of the vehicle wearing down due to being placed too close to the frame, causing the vehicle to turn off while driving and not restart for a few minutes. This issue has been reported to GM, but no service has been performed yet.

Interior accessories problems are the fifth most common issue, with 9 NHTSA complaints. Drivers have reported issues such as the seat haptic motor failing, causing a driver service assist message to appear on the dashboard. This issue can be caused by the two haptic motors, located on either side of the driver’s seat cushion, connecting to sensors in the bumper. These sensors alert the driver when they get too close to other vehicles or objects, and if they fail, the driver may not be alerted to potential hazards.

Steering problems are the seventh most common issue, with 4 NHTSA complaints. Drivers have reported issues such as the truck feeling like it skipped a gear, causing the check engine light to come on and the vehicle to vibrate while at an idle. This issue can be caused by spark plug problems, and replacing them may not solve the issue entirely.

Body/paint problems are the eighth most common issue, with 3 NHTSA complaints. Drivers have reported issues such as the rear window defroster causing thermal events, causing arching and a burning smell. This issue has been reported to NHTSA, but no recall has been issued yet.

AC/heater problems are the twelfth most common issue, with 2 NHTSA complaints. Drivers have reported issues such as the air conditioning not working properly, causing the vehicle to overheat. This issue can be caused by a faulty cooling system, and replacing the cooling system may solve the issue.

Exterior accessories problems are the thirteenth most common issue, with 2 NHTSA complaints. Drivers have reported issues such as the service trailer brake warning flashing, causing a complete loss of power steering. This issue can be caused by a corroded grounding strap, and replacing the grounding strap may solve the issue.

Drivetrain problems are the fourteenth most common issue, with 2 NHTSA complaints. Drivers have reported issues such as the transmission unexpectedly downshifting to first gear, causing the engine to lose power. This issue can be caused by transmission problems, and replacing the transmission may solve the issue.

Lights problems are the fifteenth most common issue, with 1 NHTSA complaint. Drivers have reported issues such as the headlights not working properly, causing a safety hazard while driving at night. This issue can be caused by a faulty lighting system, and replacing the lighting system may solve the issue.

Miscellaneous problems are the sixteenth most common issue, with 1 NHTSA complaint. Drivers have reported issues such as the power brakes not working properly, causing a safety hazard while driving. This issue can be caused by a faulty braking system, and replacing the braking system may solve the issue.

Seat belts/air bags problems are the nineteenth most common issue, with 1 NHTSA complaint. Drivers have reported issues such as the service parking brake light coming on, causing the vehicle to not engage into drive. This issue can be caused by a software upgrade, and updating the software may solve the issue.

Fuel system problems are the twentieth most common issue, with 1 NHTSA complaint. Drivers have reported issues such as the fuel pump failing, causing the vehicle to not start. This issue can be caused by a faulty fuel system, and replacing the fuel system may solve the issue.

Suspension problems are the twenty-first most common issue, with 1 NHTSA complaint. Drivers have reported issues such as the suspension bottoming out, causing a safety hazard while driving. This issue can be caused by a faulty suspension system, and replacing the suspension system may solve the issue.

Wheels/hubs problems are the twenty-second most common issue, with 1 NHTSA complaint. Drivers have reported issues such as the wheels locking up, causing a safety hazard while driving. This issue can be caused by a faulty wheel system, and replacing the wheel system may solve the issue.

Cooling system problems are the twenty-third most common issue, with 1 NHTSA complaint. Drivers have reported issues such as the engine overheating, causing the vehicle to not start. This issue can be caused by a faulty cooling system, and replacing the cooling system may solve the issue.

In conclusion, the 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 has reported several common problems and defects, with transmission, brakes, and engine issues being the most frequently reported. Drivers have reported issues such as the truck slamming into gear, jerking when shifting, shuddering or shaking when accelerating, front differential grinding, and shaking or vibration at highway speed, as well as issues with the brakes, engine, electrical system, interior accessories, steering, body/paint, AC/heater, exterior accessories, drivetrain, lights, miscellaneous, seat belts/air bags, fuel system, suspension, wheels/hubs, and cooling system. • VIN: 1GCRYDED5KZ
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: The engine oil cooler line detached from the crimp joints, causing an "oil pressure low turn vehicle off" alert. I was fortunately able to pull over immediately, and catch the 8 quarts of oil which dumped out. This resulted in $634 repair bill, and likely damage to the engine of the truck. Had I not been in a rural area and able to pull over immediately, I would have lost all power to drive and dumped that oil on the road, causing both safety hazard and environmental damage. This truck has been serviced by our local Chevy dealer who confirmed the problem with GM. This is a known problem to GM, the subject of their Customer Satisfaction program bulletin N192220080, and a recall in Canada and Alaska. Clearly the issue exists in areas other than Canada and Alaska, yet GM refused to cover any of the cost under our 60,000 mile warranty and has not issued a recall in other states.

The hard, sudden jerks when shifting can feel as if the vehicle has been rear-ended, potentially causing a loss of control or distraction while driving, posing a risk to both the driver and others on the road. Sluggish acceleration could also impair the vehicle’s response in critical driving situations, such as merging or avoiding obstacles. 3.Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? No, the problem has not been reproduced or confirmed by the dealer. The dealer claims the behavior is considered “normal operation,” despite the symptoms being severe enough to concern the owner. 4.Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives, or others? The vehicle has only been inspected by the dealer, who did not find any issues with the transmission or other components. It has not been inspected by any other parties like the manufacturer, police, or insurance representatives. 5.Were there any warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? There were no specific warning lamps or messages associated with the issue. STEERING,POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Components: STEERING,POWER TRAIN,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: Was driving and the engine died, lost power steering, lost gauges (No speedometer, No Tachometer, Gauges quite working at all) and lost power brakes. Had to try and pull over and was not able to stop or steer easily. I almost hit several other cars and a guardrail trying to stop and steer to emergency lane. After I got stopped, I was not able to restart my vehicle, the starter just kept running but the engine would not start and gauges didn't work. I had my vehicle towed home and started trying to figure out what happened. Put my code reader on the truck and it showed 12 different codes including ECM/BCM failure. I started checking fuses and relays but everything was good. Finally found the problem at the ECM. There was a wiring harness that was not secured and was rubbing against the frame of the truck. One little yellow wire had rubbed through and shorted out which killed the whole truck. It looks like the manufacturer didn't secure the wiring harness in several spots which allowed the wiring harness to rub on the frame and the mount that holds the ECM. The mount for the ECM has started to rub through a different wiring harness and had started rubbing through wires in that harness but I caught it in time.

Negative 2019 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 car reviews

  1. Kolby Moen 2024-11-11

I purchased the truck in October 2023 with 80,000 miles on it. Since then, I have had to replace the front rotors and pads, idle pulley, serpentine belt, and now the AC belt is squeaking. Additionally, the transmission cooler line and oil cooler line are leaking, and the truck is beginning to develop a knock. The radio also doesn't work 25% of the time. The truck doesn't handle well in corners or over bumps, and it can be quite bouncy on the road. There is also very little storage space inside the cab. The transmission downshifts quite hard, causing the whole truck to jolt every time you accelerate. In my opinion, it's not worth buying.

  2. Alvah Cummings 2024-11-03

The 2019 Silverado with the 5.3L and 8 speed transmission has been reported to have some drivetrain issues. However, it is important to note that GM has stated that this is normal transmission operation. While some drivers have experienced hard shifts and lurching, it is not a universal issue. It is important to consider the context of your driving needs and preferences when making a decision about purchasing this vehicle. GM has a reputation for producing high-quality vehicles and stands behind their products. It is recommended to consult with a GM representative to discuss any concerns before making a final decision.

  3. Kaley Morissette 2024-11-03

The truck has multiple issues, including hood paint dripping off, excessive paint on the hood, brake pad wear, tailgate unevenness, poor weatherproofing on all four doors, and an off-balance body connecting the hood to the windshield. Additionally, the interior weatherproofing is coming apart, the climate control and volume control do not work properly, the driver's seat is sinking in, and two interior roof speakers do not work. The muffler is also leaking, which the manufacturer claims is normal. Furthermore, the eco-v8 gas mileage is not as advertised, and the truck would need to be left for up to two weeks for repairs. Despite being a Chevy man, I may switch to Ford if a buyback is not possible.

Do you also feel uncomfortable with how light the 19 LTZ is? I completely understand your concerns and agree that it can be unsettling. The truck tends to bounce on bridges and shift on uneven highways, which can be nerve-wracking. It's interesting that you traded from the 18 but regret the change. The light weight and aluminum construction may not be for everyone. Thank you for sharing your thoughts!

  5. Melvin Lockman 2024-10-15

I recently purchased a 2019 Silverado Work Truck for construction purposes, but I'm having trouble seeing over the hood. This is especially problematic when cresting a rise on gravel roads or driving on narrow, curvy roads. Unfortunately, this seems to be a common issue with this particular model. Despite having purchased many Silverado trucks in the past, I'm disappointed with this design flaw. I'm concerned about the safety implications and worried about the possibility of a head-on collision on a back road. Additionally, the taller box makes accessing the box more difficult and loading requires a longer ramp or more lifting. I had planned to put a plow on this truck, but I'm not sure if I'll be able to see well enough to plow. However, I'm hopeful that a seat rail lift kit will help alleviate some of these issues.

Congratulations on your new Silverado! It's great to hear that you are a loyal customer and have owned multiple generations of this truck. The technology in the latest generation is truly impressive, especially the CarPlay and touchscreen features. The Bluetooth is also user-friendly and reliable. The Z model has a rugged and durable look, perfect for off-road adventures. The cab is spacious and comfortable, and the truck bed is roomy and lined with sturdy material. The engine is powerful and responsive, making it a great choice for towing. Overall, the Silverado is an excellent truck with many capabilities. Congratulations on your new 2019 LTZ with a 6.2 420 horse motor paired with a 10-speed transmission! It's great to hear that you're enjoying the unbelievable get up and go and amazing gas mileage. While the interior is nice, it sounds like there is room for improvement to catch up with Ford and Dodge. The new body style is simply beautiful! It's understandable that you may have concerns about the origin of the vehicle, but we hope that you continue to enjoy your new ride.

  3. Lukas Bode 2024-10-11

Got a 20 modal bugs out. Hopefully, there are no issues. I love it! It's the best and safest Chevy ever. I love the style, although some may not. They finally got it right!

We have always owned Chevrolets and in 2015 bought our first 1500. Liked it so much we purchased our 2nd last July. It is a Z71 crew cab. I like the truck but I am tired of all the recalls it has had since we purchased it. I have contacted my dealership and things get taken care of but it is starting to become annoying. First I also had the lurching problem when coming to a stop. Seems to be better now. Not sure why it has stopped. Maybe one of the 6 recalls it has had has fixed it. Then the E brake comes on by itself. Their not sure why. The gauge for the wear of the brakes had me down to 21% after 7,000 miles. That was a recall fix for a software update. Now the gas gauge is not working properly and I just called the dealership and there are 2 more recalls on it.So it is call for appointment to get that fixed. Although I love the truck the problems are ridiculous.I feel I am at the dealership constantly.

I've had my eyes on the Trail Boss since the Detroit Auto Show in 2018. I spent the beginning of 2019 watching reviews and videos of this truck. The more I learned, the more I knew I had to get my hands on one of these things. In August 2019, I finally got one and it was the best decision I've ever made. As a new owner, I'm still surprised every single day by this amazing truck. For example, when I was pulling out of my grandmother's steep driveway backwards, the truck started to hesitate at the peak, but then automatically engaged 4x4 and powered out of there in reverse! A Ford would have dropped a transmission, but not the Trail Boss. And the onboard WiFi is just as impressive. Even in areas with absolutely no cell reception for miles, the onboard WiFi kept me connected at all times without any hiccups or delays. This is a great safety feature that keeps you connected in case anything happens. If you're thinking about getting a Trail Boss, I highly recommend it. Do your research, but as an owner myself, I can say that this truck is truly amazing.
