2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 problems
The Chevrolet Silverado is a range of trucks manufactured by General Motors under the Chevrolet brand. Introduced for the 1999 model year, the Silverado is the successor to the long-running Chevrolet C/K model line. Taking its name from the top trim level from the Chevrolet C/K series, the Silverado is offered as a series of full-size pickup trucks, chassis cab trucks, and medium-duty trucks. The fourth generation of the model line was introduced for the 2019 model year.
The Chevrolet Silverado shares mechanical commonality with the identically related GMC Sierra; GMC ended the use of the C/K nomenclature a model generation prior to Chevrolet. In Mexico, high-trim level versions of the Silverado use the Chevrolet Cheyenne name (not to be confused with the 2003 concept). Competing against the Ford F-Series, Ram Pickup, Toyota Tundra, and Nissan Titan, the Silverado is among the best-selling vehicles in the United States, having sold over 12 million trucks since its introduction in 1998 as a 1999 model year.
History
The Silverado nameplate made its debut for the 1975 model year, becoming the top trim level on all Chevrolet C/K trucks, slotted above Custom Deluxe, Scottsdale, and Cheyenne. For the 1968 model year (seven years before the Silverado), GMC C/K trucks used variations of the Sierra name (Sierra, Sierra Classic, Sierra Grande, and High Sierra). Even after the C/K series officially ended, GM still uses the CK and the CC in their current model codes, to denote a two-wheel drive (CC), and four-wheel drive (CK).
For the 1988 GMT400 model architecture, Chevrolet retained the C/K model nomenclature, with GMC branding its full-size line as Sierras. While sharing the same body and chassis, the model chronology of the Silverado and Sierra are different, with five generations of the Sierra, while four of the Silverado.
In 2018, at the NTEA Work Truck Show in Indianapolis, Indiana, Chevrolet unveiled the first medium-duty Silverado, expanding the model line to a 4500HD, 5500HD, and 6500HD chassis cab. Largely the successor to the 2003–2009 GMT560 chassis, the medium-duty trucks are exclusive to Chevrolet, with no plans for an equivalent GMC version. Instead, Navistar International (now partnering with GM) would sell the medium-duty trucks as a rebadged counterpart, called the CV. This is in fact a very similar nod to how the Avalanche did not have a GMC Yukon–based equivalent, but instead, Cadillac would take its place as the former's rebadged counterpart, the Escalade EXT.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-03
- VIN: 1GCPYCEF2LZ
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: We went to an appointment and when we got back in the car, a message was on the screen. It said that the brake system has failed and we could only drive 43 mph maximum! The engine light was on and we could not accelerate beyond 43 mph. This is extremely dangerous when driving on a highway! We drove home on the interstate going 43 mph in a 70 mph zone! We had small children in the car and almost got into a few accidents due to other aggressive drivers. We then called local dealers who said that they were too busy to take our truck for weeks! They also said that our truck was not covered under warranty. So we took it to a local body shop. They fixed it for just above $500. It worked for a week and broke again, then they fixed it again for free. The brake failure 43 mph light came on for the 3rd time. We took it Garber and they fixed it after 2 weeks and charged us a fortune. Invoice attached. A few weeks later the same light came back on. Garber then took another 2 weeks to fix it! I’m writing here as I’ve seen other silverados recalled for the same issue but not my exact truck (year). It’s obviously faulty software and it should not be the customers responsibility to fix. Especially with a vehicle under 20k miles! There is absolutely no way that we will ever buy a GM again but the important part here is that other people are not put into a dangerous situation like we were. Besides dealing with this issue for well over a month - the important part is safety. I can’t understand how these trucks have the same problems but only certain VINs qualify for a recall. Please consider our truck as part of the overall recall for this issue. It’s unethical to pick and choose only certain VINs!

- Date Of Incident: 2020-08-01
- VIN: 1GCUYGED8LZ
- Components: STEERING,SUSPENSION,POWER TRAIN
- Summary: I'm not sure what to call most of this but my truck has been vibrating when getting up to about 50 mph. When putting in gear it shows you put it in the gear wanted put doesn't register sometimes and perks you and clicks. The entire front end grinds, pops and clicks when turning forward or backwards. When doing the steering wheel will get stuck and want turn for a split second in turn causing steering To be misaligned causing you to basically steer the wheel in an unnatural position until you stop put it in park then proceed to drive again. I have had these issues since we bought the vehicle brand new. We have to get an alignment and balance rotation like every 6 months for it to only help for a about a month to not be as bad.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-23
- VIN: 1GCRYDED9LZ
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: Rear end went out within drivetrain warranty period. Chevy claimed it was due to a leak even though there was no evidence of one and they couldn’t produce the part. Almost immediately after getting it back it started to have transmission problems (8L90). They again claimed there wasn’t a problem. - Date Of Incident: 2024-09-19
- VIN: 1GCPYFEL1LZ
- Components: STEERING,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: The Electronic Steering assist stopped working while I was driving to work. Was leaving a stop sign and steering wheel became stuff and notifications on dash appeared. Was able to get to side of the road and turned vehicle off for 20-30 mins and started back up and steering was normal. Notifications on the dash were: Service Power Steering and Service Trailer Braking System. Search online showed this is a known issue that has happened with these vehicles for years and clearly hasnt been addressed. This is very dangerous. Vehicle has 42k miles on it. I had the "Service Trailer Braking System" notification come on a couple times previously and steering felt "sloppy" but immediately went away. And Ive never used the trailer braking system so I didnt think anything of it.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-09
- VIN: 3GCUYEEL5LG
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: I'm beginning to have similar problems with the 6.2 ecotec3 engine that gm has known problems and hasn't recalled them. Dealer indicates metal shavings from the main motor bearings. Just like others I will experience a total motor failure at anytime. This will be catastrophic if motor fails and shuts down. I fear I will be rear-ended or not be able to get out of harms way. This has happened to many with the same motor. Why would there not be a safety recall on a known safety issue. Others affected have been injured even killed because there vehicle just stopped in the middle of a roadway. I currently fear for my families safety and cannot simply opt out of a vehicle with only 18,000 and thousands invested. Instead it sits waiting for the right thing to be done. To be repaired to safely use. Thank you kindly.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-03
- VIN: 3GCPWBEH2LG
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 Custom, bought new on August 10, 2020. On August 24, 2020 I returned the vehicle to the dealership with 524 miles on the odometer, for hard downshifting at low speeds. The technician returned the truck with 531 miles, stating that he could not duplicate the issue. The issue continued along with occasional shudder at speeds around 40-50 m.p.h. On December 14, 2022 I took the truck to a different dealership with 1,616 miles and it was returned with 1,625 miles on the odometer. The technician found a slight shudder at 25-30 m.p.h. under light acceleration, but could not duplicate any other malfunction. The technician stated there was no metal debris in the fluid pan and performed a flush and refill of transmission fluid, installed updated thermal bypass valve and three seals. The issues still persisted, but not as harsh or as frequently prior to this service. I returned to the original dealership again on September 3, 2020 with the same concerns at approximately 28-K miles. Again, after having my truck (4) days, the original dealership's technician stated that he could not duplicate the problem(s).

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-22
- VIN: 1GCUYDED4LZ
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: Truck was purchased from an authorized chevy dealership less than 6 months ago. Truck had transmission service just before purchasing it as it was *maintenance* not repairs. However all of a sudden the truck will stop accelerating in the middle of intersections where you typically would have a 1-2 or 2-3 shift. along with during acceleration on highway it will decide it doesnt want to shift anymore to a higher gear than 4th or 5th. This is causing a constant safety threat as i cannot control when the vehicle will move under its own power. This is a known problem with cheverolet as they will replace the parts that cause this if its under warranty however mine is not. Although the warranty is up the issue is caused by poor manufacturing process and they know that.

This is frustrating due to the fact that I was having this same issue 6 months ago and Chevrolet said it was a wiring issue and it wasn't covered by the warranty because it had 42k miles. Chevrolet said it was a known issue but it was not at the level of a recall and it cost $1800 to fix.

The diffuser component of the Roof-Rail Air Bag (RRAB) inflator may not have been properly crimped to the inflator and could separate from the inflator during air bag deployment.
- Consequence: If the diffuser separates from the inflator during deployment, RRAB performance may be degraded, increasing the risk of injury in a crash.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the suspect RRAB modules, free of charge. The recall began September 3, 2020. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-630-2438, Cadillac customer service at 1-800-333-4223, or Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300. GM's number for this recall is N202305380.

- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 vehicles. The bolts used to attach the front and/or rear brake calipers may have not been heat treated and may break under load.
- Consequence: Broken caliper bolts can reduce brake performance or interfere with wheel rotation and increase the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the brake caliper bolts, free of charge. The recall began March 23, 2020. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC customer service at 1-866-522-9559. GM's number for this recall is N202294420.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:12V/24V/48V BATTERY:CABLES
- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2019-2020 Chevrolet Silverado 1500 and GMC Sierra 1500 trucks. The battery positive (B+) cable rings may have been manufactured with excessive glue, potentially causing an intermittent electrical connection between the B+ cable and alternator.
- Consequence: An intermittent electrical connection between the B+ battery cable and the alternator could cause the vehicle to stall, increasing the risk of a crash. The intermittent connection could also lead to electrical arcing, which could generate sufficient heat to damage surrounding material, increasing the risk of a fire.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will inspect for the presence of glue or other contamination at the B+ cable attachment to the alternator and clean the connection and reattach the B+ cable connection, as necessary. If arcing has damaged the cable, nut, or alternator, the dealer will replace the damaged components. All services will be performed free of charge. GM issued owners an interim notification on February 4, 2020. GM issued second notice and the recall began March 9, 2019. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC customer service at 1-888-988-7267. GM's number for this recall is N192273510.

- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain 2020 Cadillac Escalade, Escalade ESV, Chevrolet Camaro, Silverado 1500, Suburban, Tahoe, GMC Sierra 1500, Yukon, and Yukon XL vehicles. The fuel pump may be missing a pressure regulator, allowing for over-pressurization of the fuel system.
- Consequence: Over-pressurization can crack the fuel pump and cause leaks, increasing the risk of a fire in the presence of an ignition source.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will replace the fuel pump, free of charge. The recall began December 18, 2019. Owners may contact Cadillac customer service at 1-800-333-4223, Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, or GMC customer service at 1-888-988-7267. GM's number for this recall is N192283991.

When the front seat belt pretensioners deploy, hot gas may vent through an opening in the pretensioner bracket, possibly igniting the carpet.
- Consequence: A vehicle fire could result if materials ignite inside the vehicle.
- Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will close off the opening in the pretensioner bracket, free of charge. The recall began December 13, 2019. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020 or GMC customer service at 1-888-988-7267. GM's number for this recall is N192270600.

I bought a highly optioned High Country with a 6.2 engine and have had zero problems in 38K miles. While I love my truck, I do have a few suggestions for improvement. The manual steering column could benefit from power tilt and telescope with more range, and I miss having adjustable pedals and lighter interior colors. I believe interior upgrades are overdue and would love to see Chevy offer interiors that are on par with Ford and Ram.

This wonderful truck has 2000 miles, LTZ crew cab, and a sun roof. However, as an 84-year-old, I have found that I can no longer handle anything of this size. Therefore, I am looking for a car that will make parking easier for me.

I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your truck so far! The 6.2 engine sounds like it's definitely worth it and it's great to hear that it can handle all your hauling needs. While the gas mileage may not be the best, it's important to remember that it is a truck after all. I appreciate your perspective on the ride quality and the technology features - sometimes simplicity is key! It's great to hear that the truck has plenty of storage and cup holders for your family. Overall, it sounds like you're really happy with your Chevy truck and I appreciate your recommendation for others.

There may be other trucks with more bells and whistles, but I believe my truck is the perfect combination of work and play. I can't find a single fault with it. It's comfortable during my commute and always ready to work. It can haul anything I put in the bed or tow on the hitch with ease.

I've driven 5000 miles on my Silverado Custom 4 Cylinder and it's been a pretty fun experience. The truck is pretty quick and enjoyable to drive. The only downside I've noticed so far is that the radio can't be controlled from the steering wheel.

I had some trouble with my 2018 Silverado, but I was excited to see that they had a new transmission available. I decided to go for a loaded Trailboss for around 60k and I absolutely loved it! Unfortunately, I experienced a major electrical issue when the check engine light came on, but the local dealer was very helpful and provided me with a Chevy Trax as a loaner while they worked on my truck. Although the situation was frustrating, I must say that the truck still looks great!

The motor failed at just 11,000 miles, with bad lifters and bending pushrods, rendering it non-functional. Unfortunately, the service from the dealer has been unacceptable and the product support has been lacking. This is not acceptable for a product of this nature. While it is under warranty, the poor service makes it difficult to feel confident in the product. I purchased a new truck to avoid being stranded, but unfortunately, that is exactly what happened. It is ironic that I sold my previous truck out of concern for it breaking down, only to have this happen with my new Chevy truck. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend a Chevy truck to anyone.

Are the seats in the Chevy truck a joke? We recently checked out a High Country model (which costs $60K, mind you) and I have to say, they were the most uncomfortable seats I've ever sat in. What was Chevy thinking?

I purchased my 2020 Chevy Silverado 1500 in January 2020 and unfortunately, I have had some issues with it. There has been a persistent sound in the front end that no one has been able to figure out, and as a result, it has spent some time in the dealership garage. Despite only having 4,000 miles on it, it has been a frustrating experience. If you are in the market for a new truck, you may want to consider other brands such as Ford or Dodge. Thank you for your understanding.

I hope Chevy improves the interior soon because it feels quite cheap compared to my 2018 model. It's disappointing that Xm radio is only available on certain models. The price seems high for the quality they are offering these days. I might consider shopping for a Ford or Ram next time, unless Chevy can change my mind.
