Pontiac Grand prix problems

pontiac logo

The Grand Prix is a line of automobiles produced by the Pontiac Division of General Motors from 1962 until 2002 as coupes and from 1989 through 2008 model years as four-door sedans.

First introduced as a full-size performance coupe for the 1962 model year, the model varied repeatedly in size, luxury, and performance during its production. The Grand Prix was the most expensive coupe Pontiac offered until the 1970s, when the Bonneville Brougham and the Firebird Trans Am became more exclusive. Among the changes were positioning in the personal luxury car market segment and mid-size car offering from the second generation to the fifth generation for the sedan and from the second generation to the sixth generation from the coupe.

All Grand Prixs from 1962 through 1972 were pillarless hardtops (except for the 1967 convertible),

Common Pontiac Grand prix problems

The Pontiac Grand Prix, produced from 1962 to 2008, is known for its sporty appearance and spacious trunk. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. These issues vary based on the model year, but some of the most frequently reported problems across different generations include:

  • Steering Issues: Steering problems are another common issue in the Grand Prix. For instance, the 2004 model has 60 complaints related to steering issues, with some drivers reporting that they did not receive a notice for a 2009 recall addressing broken steering knuckles, which can result in major long-term damages.
  • Electrical Issues: Electrical problems are prevalent in the Grand Prix, with more than 100 complaints reported for the 2004 model. Issues range from melted fuses and fidgety switches to electrical fires under the hood.
  • Transmission Problems: Transmission issues are also common in the Grand Prix. For example, the 2006 model has 44 transmission-related complaints, with drivers reporting engine stall and excessive oil consumption despite an absence of visible leaks.
  • Headlight Failure: The 7th generation Grand Prix (2004-2008) has a known issue with sudden low beam headlight failure. This is due to a defective headlamp driver module, which is responsible for distributing power to the lights.

These are just a few of the common problems reported by Pontiac Grand Prix owners. When considering purchasing a Grand Prix, it is essential to research the specific model year to understand potential issues and associated repair costs.

The exhaust notes are certainly a delightful symphony, but unfortunately the suspension and torque steer detract from the experience of carving a canyon and competing with German engineered products. The first impression is a throaty growl that stimulates the adrenal gland, but the ride on the street is like drinking sour milk. The suspension is so soft that the front end bottoms out at moderate speeds over undulations in the road, giving the feeling of floating in a raft in the pool. Torque steer nearly planted me in the car in the next lane on the freeway. Under hard acceleration, it is not unlike flying a helicopter: don't even think of releasing the controls! The constant input requirement drowns the fun of the acceleration.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my car. I bought it used back in September 2005 with 33,000 miles on it. It's been a reliable car overall, but there are a few design flaws that I've noticed. Unfortunately, rainstorms aren't its friend - water tends to run down into the AC system, which caused me to have to replace the heater box. The blower started sticking last year, and even though I got it fixed, it didn't last. Recently, the AC system burned up completely, but I've decided not to get it fixed. Another issue I've noticed is that the floors get soaked in heavy rain, which is really strange. Despite these issues, I've loved the power and good looks of this car. The backseat is a bit cramped, but the trunk is the size of Nebraska! Thanks for listening to my story.

The first several months, I absolutely loved driving it. The design is really eye-catching. However, I've had some issues with it. The back door sides have been popping off, the transmission has been going out, and I've had to replace the starter. Additionally, the keys get stuck in the ignition, only the passenger window will roll down, and the vehicle now shakes when under 45MPH. Twice a year, I need to replace the windshield wipers, and there's no trunk light. The console cup holders have also fallen off. All of this happened within 3-4 years of having the car. I've always taken care of my cars, but no matter how well I treat it, everything keeps breaking. Even the rear view mirror fell off after several months. If you have the money to spend, then this is the type of car you'll want.

Hi there! I recently purchased an 08 Grand Prix with 60k miles and so far, it seems like a good car. However, I have noticed that the interior could use some work. As someone who is 5'7, I feel like I'm going to hit my head on the roof with the seat completely lowered. Additionally, my two children have trouble seeing out the windows in the back because the seats are too low. My son is 5 years old and in a booster, but the window placement is way too high. As someone who is used to driving SUVs, I also find that the car sits too low and I have to pull myself up out of the car. Nonetheless, I'm a big fan of Pontiac and this is my second one. My Sunfire lasted 7 years with tons of driving and little maintenance, so I hope this one holds up just as well!

In early 2010, I purchased a GXP with less than 30K miles. Currently, I own a 2009 G8 GT, and while the performance is comparable, the reliability is not. Unfortunately, I have experienced too many issues, most of which are transmission-related, to recommend this car to another buyer. If you own one of these and make it to 50k miles without replacing the transmission, consider yourself lucky. I began having transmission problems at 35k miles and had the transmission fluid changed, but it still did not shift right. Within 5k miles, I had to have a new transmission put in. Regrettably, the car never shifted right again.

This car is great, but unfortunately, I had some bad luck with the one I bought. I purchased it for only $2,000, and although I was led to believe it was in almost perfect condition, it turned out to be a bit of a 'lemon'. After only two weeks of owning it, the battery died, and this led to a string of problems that have cost me almost $2,000 to fix. Now, the transmission has gone out, and I don't feel like putting any more money into it. I do love this car, though - the look and the speed from the supercharger are fantastic. I just wanted to share my story and let people know that they shouldn't shy away from this car - just be careful when buying.

I bought this car from an older couple in 2011 when it had 110k miles on it. I drove it until the transmission went out at 240k miles in 2017. My GP was GT2 and had all GTP options, but no supercharger or heads-up display. The heated seats were great for winter. I was the third owner and the MPG ranged from as low as 16mpg in summer with A/C max in bumper-to-bumper traffic to as high as 34mpg. On average, I got 20-28mpg. The car has little headroom for someone 6'1 and is designed for shorter people between 5-6 feet tall. However, my sunroof never leaked or broke. As far as I know, the motor and transmission were all original and I never had to rebuild them. The heater core went out, which was expensive even for my friend to fix because you have to take the entire dash apart. I replaced the elbows with good metal ones, but once I got stuck at the store and almost overheated, so I had to tow it. The car drove straight and had Michelin Defender tires that cost $700. The tread was at half or so when I sold it for $700 even with no transmission. The ownership cost was way lower than my 98 Blazer.

I love this car! It has plenty of interior space, a huge trunk, and a Bose stereo system that shakes the car when loud and is crystal clear. The car has great get up and go. The Limited model has lots of gadgets, including the on-board computer and heads-up Eye-Cue. For the price of this car, we got the most for our money.

I love this car! It's a high-performance vehicle with plenty of room and a very sporty look. The only downside is that I've had a few issues with the transmission, specifically with 4th gear overdrive.
