Pontiac Grand prix problems

pontiac logo

The Grand Prix is a line of automobiles produced by the Pontiac Division of General Motors from 1962 until 2002 as coupes and from 1989 through 2008 model years as four-door sedans.

First introduced as a full-size performance coupe for the 1962 model year, the model varied repeatedly in size, luxury, and performance during its production. The Grand Prix was the most expensive coupe Pontiac offered until the 1970s, when the Bonneville Brougham and the Firebird Trans Am became more exclusive. Among the changes were positioning in the personal luxury car market segment and mid-size car offering from the second generation to the fifth generation for the sedan and from the second generation to the sixth generation from the coupe.

All Grand Prixs from 1962 through 1972 were pillarless hardtops (except for the 1967 convertible),

Common Pontiac Grand prix problems

The Pontiac Grand Prix, produced from 1962 to 2008, is known for its sporty appearance and spacious trunk. However, like any vehicle, it has its share of common problems. These issues vary based on the model year, but some of the most frequently reported problems across different generations include:

  • Steering Issues: Steering problems are another common issue in the Grand Prix. For instance, the 2004 model has 60 complaints related to steering issues, with some drivers reporting that they did not receive a notice for a 2009 recall addressing broken steering knuckles, which can result in major long-term damages.
  • Electrical Issues: Electrical problems are prevalent in the Grand Prix, with more than 100 complaints reported for the 2004 model. Issues range from melted fuses and fidgety switches to electrical fires under the hood.
  • Transmission Problems: Transmission issues are also common in the Grand Prix. For example, the 2006 model has 44 transmission-related complaints, with drivers reporting engine stall and excessive oil consumption despite an absence of visible leaks.
  • Headlight Failure: The 7th generation Grand Prix (2004-2008) has a known issue with sudden low beam headlight failure. This is due to a defective headlamp driver module, which is responsible for distributing power to the lights.

These are just a few of the common problems reported by Pontiac Grand Prix owners. When considering purchasing a Grand Prix, it is essential to research the specific model year to understand potential issues and associated repair costs.

When it comes to buying a car, there are two things that matter most to me: the engine and the transmission. I find the 4-speed automatic to be excellent, with clean and crisp shifts at any throttle position. However, I do have some concerns about the 3.8L engine. It seems like a huge displacement engine, but only delivers 195 horsepower. I've even seen '95 Nissan Maximas outperforming me! The Maxima has a 3.0L V6 with 190 horsepower and it still outperforms my 3.8L. The 3800 series II V6 has 51.3 horsepower per liter while the '95 Maxima has 63.3 H.P.P.L. The 2002 Max has a 3.5L with 255HP! That's almost 80 HPPL!

Although this car has had some issues, I have invested over $5000 in repairs to ensure that it is in the best possible condition. While there have been some problems with the interior, such as the seat lacking padding and the front panel falling apart, I have taken steps to address these issues. Additionally, I have made sure to maintain the car to prevent rust and other issues. While there have been some leaks in the backseat and trunk, I have taken steps to address these as well. Although there have been some issues with the ABS light and TCS, I have taken steps to ensure that these are resolved. Overall, I am confident that this car is a reliable and safe vehicle.

During the warranty period, unfortunately, several components of the car such as the instrument cluster, wiper motor+switch, headlight switch, exhaust, ECM, trunk release, and more failed, some more than once. After the warranty period, many of the same items failed and Pontiac unfortunately offered no assistance. Since the warranty expired, the car has seen 5 alternators, 3 starters, 2 water pumps, 2 instrument clusters, one computer, damper pulley, injector problem, intake manifold oil leak, AC compressor, many sensors, and much more. The radio unfortunately quit a while ago. The transmission also unfortunately failed at 60k miles. Today, at 78K, the rack has unfortunately failed. The only nice thing I can say about it is that it still looks like the day I bought it.

I originally bought a 99 gtp that went 154000 miles before a deer got it. I couldn't bear to pay close to 20k for a new econobox, so I bought the last of this generation in 2007 for half that. It's a comfortable muscle car that excels in acceleration and long distance cruising. The handling is okay but can be a bit sloppy when really pushed. Unfortunately, the transmission sometimes makes a clunking noise when starting from a stop. The 'leather' is more like vinyl and the rear seats are not very comfortable for adults on long trips. Additionally, the HVAC setting doesn't work in the first 2 positions and the brakes can fade under repeated hard use. A 5-speed manual transmission would have made this car much quicker. It gets 15 mpg in the city and 26 mpg on the highway. Despite these issues, the car feels solid and well-built.

I absolutely love driving the 2008 Grand Prix GXP! As someone who has owned four Pontiacs, I can confidently say that they are some of the most reliable cars on the road. In fact, I once sold my 98 Grand Am with over 250,000 miles on it and it was still running strong two years ago (although I lost track of it). The power you feel when you step on the accelerator is incredible - it really pulls you back in your seat! And as for winter driving, I had no issues during the 2009 winter here in North Idaho. I simply put on four studded tires and was able to go everywhere, even in 12 inches of snow and ice. The only thing I would suggest is adding a bit more chrome to the exterior here and there.

I bought my car in 2005 with only 6k miles on it. It has been a reliable companion ever since, with only minor issues until last year when I accidentally hit a curb. After that, I had to replace the tie rods, brakes, and found leaks in the coolant tank and power steering reservoirs. I got them all fixed for around 5k, and now my car runs as smoothly as silk. Even now, I get a thrill out of the early morning acceleration rush. The A/C works effortlessly, bringing temperatures down to polar regions even in the peak of Texan summer. My Grand Prix used to cut through Michigan snow without so much as a sway. Many of my friends who owned Hondas and Infinitis would ride with me because of the stability of my car in those conditions.

I started with a 1997 Pontiac Bonneville which was an excellent car. However, because of my age, I decided I needed something sportier. I was impressed with Pontiac, so I went for the Grand Prix GT (for the 3800 engine), which turned out to be my best move.

I haven't seen any other car out there that I would like better than my Grand Prix. Its engine is very responsive and it's fun to drive. I plan to keep this car for a long, long time. I feel that it is built to last, which was important to me since I don't change cars often.

Hi there! I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your car! Your GTP is almost 10 years old and still runs like new with 132,000 miles - that's amazing! When your a/c went out, you had a full run of tests done and it only had three minor issues: 1. the a/c pump went dead, 2. a small oil leak due to an old gasket on the oil pan, and 3. you were advised to keep an eye on the CV boot. It sounds like it's a lot of fun to drive and starts just like a GM should, with a 0-60 somewhere in the mid 6's. It's pretty comfortable on long drives, although the leather can make your back a bit sweaty. You got the a/c pump replaced and you're planning to put a new oil pan gasket on yourself during the next oil change. You mentioned that you think this car could benefit from a 5-speed instead of a 4 - that's an interesting thought! Thanks for sharing your experience with us!
