1991 Pontiac Grand prix problems
The Grand Prix is a line of automobiles produced by the Pontiac Division of General Motors from 1962 until 2002 as coupes and from 1989 through 2008 model years as four-door sedans.
First introduced as a full-size performance coupe for the 1962 model year, the model varied repeatedly in size, luxury, and performance during its production. The Grand Prix was the most expensive coupe Pontiac offered until the 1970s, when the Bonneville Brougham and the Firebird Trans Am became more exclusive. Among the changes were positioning in the personal luxury car market segment and mid-size car offering from the second generation to the fifth generation for the sedan and from the second generation to the sixth generation from the coupe.
All Grand Prixs from 1962 through 1972 were pillarless hardtops (except for the 1967 convertible),

Common 1991 Pontiac Grand prix problems
The 1991 Pontiac Grand Prix, a popular car of its time, has been known to have some common problems based on complaints from its owners. One of the most frequently reported issues is related to the transmission. The Transmission Pressure Control Solenoid Failure may cause erratic shifting or even complete transmission failure, which can be a significant inconvenience and expense to repair.
Another problem that has been reported by some owners is related to the crankshaft position circuit, which includes the sensor, wire harness, ignition control module, and engine control module. If there is a fault in this circuit, the tachometer may read 0 RPM while the engine is cranking or running, indicating a problem with the crankshaft position sensor or other components in the circuit. This can lead to intermittent spark issues, which can be difficult to troubleshoot.
In addition to these mechanical issues, some owners have reported problems with the fuel system, including the fuel pump and gas pressure regulator. These problems can lead to difficulty starting the car, particularly after it has been driven for a while and is warm.
Finally, some owners have reported problems with the battery and electrical system, including difficulty changing the battery and jump-starting the car. This can be a significant inconvenience, particularly if the car is being used as a daily driver.
It's important to note that not all 1991 Pontiac Grand Prix cars will experience these problems, and many owners have reported positive experiences with the car. However, these common issues are worth considering when purchasing a used 1991 Grand Prix, particularly if the car has high mileage or has not been well-maintained.
Are Pontiac Grand Prix reliable?
Pontiacs generally have a good track record for longevity with many Grand Prix owners reporting an average mileage of 225,000 miles before the engine and transmission repairs start to pile up. Expect to reach a maximum of 250,000 miles if you're lucky, 200,000 if the car wasn't in great shape when you found it.

STRUCTURE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2007-11-24
- VIN: 162WJ14T5MF
- Components: STRUCTURE
- Summary: I WAS DRIVING DOWN A MAIN ROAD (SPEED LIMIT 55 MPH) WHEN MY STEERING WENT COMPLETELY OUT, THE STEERING WHEEL SPUN IN EITHER DIRECTION WITHOUT STOPPING W/NO ACTION AT TIRES. LUCKILY I WAS ABLE TO BRAKE AND MANEUVER THE VEHICLE TO THE SHOULDER. UPON FURTHER INVESTIGATION I REALIZED THE ONLY REASON I WAS ABLE TO MANEUVER THE VEHICLE TO THE SHOULDER BY PRESSING THE BRAKES IS BECAUSE THE DRIVERS SIDE REAR CRADLE BOLT ON THE DRIVERS SIDE WAS MISSING WHICH CAUSED THE ENGINE AND ENTIRE FRONT END TO DROP AND TWIST TO THE RIGHT WHEN THE BRAKE WAS APPLIED. THERE ARE MANY VEHICLE TRAFFIC DEATHS ON THIS ROAD EVERY YEAR AND LUCKILY I WASN'T ANOTHER STATISTIC. MY REASON BEHIND THIS COMPLAINT IS I HAVE NOTICED THAT THE NHTSA HAS ISSUED A RECALL ON THIS PROBLEM (CAMPAIGN #00V189000). UPON LEARNING THIS I TOOK THE VEHICLE UP TO THE DEALER TO REMEDY THE PROBLEM AND WAS INFORMED THAT THE VEHICLE DID NOT FALL UNDER THE RECALL BECAUSE THE VIN # IS ONE NUMBER OFF (I.E. PONTIAC ISSUED THE RECALL FOR VINS UP TO MF23 AND MY VIN IS MF24). THIS INFORMATION IS LOCATED ON GM'S DOCUMENT, ID# 792186. MY COMPLAINT IS THIS: THE PROBLEM HAS OCCURRED TO MY CAR, I LIVE IN MICHIGAN, IT'S A 1991, I COULD HAVE LOST MY LIFE AND I FEEL IT'S ALL ATTRIBUTED TO POOR ENGINEERING ON GM'S BEHALF, THEY HAVE RECOGNIZED THAT, BUT FOR THE SAKE OF SAVING MONEY, MY VEHICLE (ONE NUMBER OFF ON THE VIN), WAS NOT INCLUDED ON THE RECALL, YET THE PROBLEM STILL EXISTS. THE SERVICE DEPARTMENT WAS VERY COMBATIVE WHEN ADDRESSING MY PROBLEM AND NOT VERY CONCERNED, EVEN THOUGH IT COULD OF BEEN ONE OF THEIR WIVES OR DAUGHTERS I CRASHED HEAD ON INTO BECAUSE OF POOR ENGINEERING AND AN OBVIOUS PROBLEM THAT WAS NOT COMPLETELY ADDRESSED IN ALL GRAND PRIXS THAT WERE MANUFACTURED IN 1991 AND REGISTERED IN THE STATE OF MICHIGAN. *TR

I recently bought my first car, a 1990 Pontiac Grand Prix STE. It's a real beauty! I couldn't believe it was from the 90s! I feel so spoiled by it and I love bragging to my friends about it.
-
This is a great car all around. It's reliable, fun to drive, and has a good balance of speed. Although I've had to replace the fuel pump twice, it's a common issue that can be easily fixed. Overall, I highly recommend this car!
-
This car is the best! I love it. If I ever get rid of mine, I want another one just like the one I have now. I know they did not make a lot of these at all :(
-
This is a great vehicle! Although the oil tends to leak and the radio tends to burn out easily, these are small problems that are easily and inexpensively fixed. I had a great time driving this vehicle as my first car because of its fuel economy and acceleration.
-
I loved driving it. It had excellent handling. I think its 0-60 was around 7.7-8.1.

If you happen to touch it, please be careful as the paint might come off. Unfortunately, the car was painted with a new primer that didn't work well, causing the paint to chip off easily. As a result, the car doesn't look very attractive. The engine lasted for 244km before seizing, and the brakes were not very effective. The car also seemed to have its good and bad days. Additionally, the control display was not very reliable, and I often found it difficult to determine my speed. Therefore, it might be best to consider other options.
