2000 Pontiac Grand prix problems

pontiac logo

The Grand Prix is a line of automobiles produced by the Pontiac Division of General Motors from 1962 until 2002 as coupes and from 1989 through 2008 model years as four-door sedans.

First introduced as a full-size performance coupe for the 1962 model year, the model varied repeatedly in size, luxury, and performance during its production. The Grand Prix was the most expensive coupe Pontiac offered until the 1970s, when the Bonneville Brougham and the Firebird Trans Am became more exclusive. Among the changes were positioning in the personal luxury car market segment and mid-size car offering from the second generation to the fifth generation for the sedan and from the second generation to the sixth generation from the coupe.

All Grand Prixs from 1962 through 1972 were pillarless hardtops (except for the 1967 convertible),

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-12-05
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: 1G2WP12KXYF
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: I AM PROBABLY THE 3RD OWNER OF THIS CAR AND WAS UNAWARE OF THE RECALL. I RESEARCHED AND FOUND THAT THE RECALL EXISTS BECAUSE I WAS SEARCHING FOR A REASON FOR MY CAR TO EXPERIENCE AN ENGINE FIRE THIS PAST MONDAY. AFTER CALLING THE MANUFACTURER, IT APPEARS THAT THE SEARCH FOR CURRENT OWNERS IS NOT IN THE PURVIEW OF THE MANUFACTURER AND ALL OF THE RESPONSIBILITY FOR THE RESEARCH OF THE CAR IS ON THE PURCHASER. AT THE TIME OF THE FIRE, THE CAR HAD BEEN BEING DRIVEN TO THE COFFEE STORE, WHEN RETURNING TO THE CAR ABOUT 10 MINUTES LATER, IT WAS DISCOVERED TO BE ENGULFED IN FLAME. WITH FLAMES COMING OUT FROM THE HOOD. MY ISSUE IS WITH THE RESPONSIBILITY OF NOTIFICATION AND THE REASONABLE EXPECTATION OF A CONSUMER THAT THE MANUFACTURER OF A LICENSED VEHICLE MAKE ATTEMPTS TO COMMUNICATE RECALL DATA BEYOND THE SCOPE OF THE ORIGINAL PURCHASER. ALL STATES MONITOR ALL LICENSED VEHICLES INCLUDING THE CURRENT OWNER. IT SEEMS THAT THIS DATA CAN BE UTILIZED TO MAKE A FAR BETTER ATTEMPT TO LOCATE OWNERS WHEN SUCH A HAZARD EXISTS WITH THE CAR. I WAS COMPLETELY UNAWARE OF THE RECALL STATUS OF THIS CAR.

  • Summary: MY DAUGHTER HAD BEEN DRIVING THIS 2000 PONTIAC AND WAS COMPLAINING OF IT SMELLING "HOT" ALL THE TIME. WE HAD THE SERVICE SHOP TAKE A LOOK UNDER THE HOOD, AND HE INSTANTLY SAID, CHECK WITH GM ON A RECALL FOR THESE LEAKY VALVE COVERS"! INTERESTINGLY ENOUGH, WE HAD THAT VERY RECALL NOTICE HANGING ON THE FRIDGE, WAITING FOR A CALL THAT" PARTS WERE AVAILABLE AND TO BRING THE CAR IN FOR REPAIRS"! WELL GUESS WHAT GM, A FEW DAYS AFTER I CALLED A LOCAL GM DEALER, AND SHE SAID "OH NO, WE DON'T HAVE PARTS ON HAND, WE JUST WAIT FOR PEOPLE TO CALL AND THEN ORDER THEM", THE CAR BURNED UP! JUST AS THEY SAID COULD HAPPEN! THEY ALSO SAID DON'T PARK INSIDE A GARAGE! THEY ARE RIGHT! IT WAS PARKED OUTSIDE THE SHOP, THANK GOODNESS, WHEN IT BURST INTO FLAMES! I COULD HAVE EASILY LOST DAUGHTERS IN THIS BLAZE, DUE TO GM'S FAILURE TO REPAIR THE CAR CORRECTLY THE FIRST TIME, THEN FAILURE TO HAVE THE PARTS NEEDED TO REPAIR IT THE SECOND TIME IT WAS RECALLED!! NOW THEY DON'T WANT TO REPLACE THE VEHICLE THEY LET BURN UP!! I FILED A COMPLAINT, SENT PICTURES OF THE BURNED UP THING, AND THEY BASICALLY SAY "TOUGH LUCK". I AM THROUGHLY DISAPPOINTED IN GM ON THIS DEAL. YOU SHOULD BE WILLING TO TAKE OWNERSHIP OF THIS CAR PROBLEM, STEP UP TO THE PLATE, AND DO WHAT IS RIGHT! FIRST OFFER 610.00 DOLLARS! HA! WHAT CAR DO I BUY MY DAUGHTER FOR THAT!? SECOND OFFER 800.00, AGAIN, WHAT CAR DO I BUY MY DAUGHTER FOR THAT? BRING ME OUT A COUPLE OF CARS AT THAT PRICE GM, AND WE WILL SEE IF THEY CAN REPLACE THE CAR YOU LET BURN UP! WE ARE OUT A CAR, OUT TRANSPORTATION TO AND FROM COLLEGE, OUT CONTENTS OF THE CAR, WE FIGURED TO BE AROUND $3600.00! AND YOU SAY $800.00! GOOGLE THIS RECALL #15757 UP AND SEE JUST HOW MANY OF US ARE OUT OF LUCK! I JUST THANK GOD THAT THE CAR HAD JUST BEEN PARKED AT THE REPAIR SHOP, AND DIDN'T BURST INTO FLAMES WHILE MY DAUGHTERS WERE DRIVING IT DOWN THE HIGHWAY, AND YOU SHOULD TOO GM!

2000 Pontiac Grand prix recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 9 recalls for different components of the 2000 Pontiac Grand prix.

2015-10-26
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 1998-1999 Chevrolet Lumina and Oldsmobile Intrigue, 1997-2004 Buick Regal and Pontiac Grand Prix, 2000-2004 Chevrolet Impala, and 1998-2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo vehicles. The affected vehicles were previously repaired under recalls 08V-118, 09V-116, and 15V-201 to address the possibility that engine oil may drip onto the hot exhaust manifold.
  • Consequence: Engine oil that drips onto the hot surface of the exhaust manifold may result in a fire.
  • Remedy: The remedy applied under recalls 08V-118, 09V-116, and 15V-201 did not adequately remove the safety risk. Under the improved remedy, dealers will replace the engine’s front valve cover and gasket. Vehicles that are covered by recalls 08V-118, 09V-116, or 15V-201 that have not yet received the original remedy will instead receive the improved remedy under the original recall number. The recall began on February 19, 2016. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Oldsmobile customer service at 1-800-442-6537 and Pontiac customer service at 1-800-458-8006. GM's number for this recall is 15757. Note: Until the improved remedy has been applied, owners are advised to park their vehicle outside since the fire risk exists even when the vehicle is unattended.

Negative 2000 Pontiac Grand prix car reviews

  1. Damion Schaden 2024-11-22

I bought this car new and unfortunately, it has had a lot of issues with the trim, gauges, radio, blower fan control, and cooling system. The cooling leak was particularly difficult to get fixed under warranty, as it turned out to be the upper intake manifold and took two years to resolve with Pontiac. Despite these challenges, the car has never broken down on the road and drives well. However, there is quite a bit of road noise in the passenger compartment and the interior trim feels a bit cheap.

  2. Shawn Huels 2024-11-09

Hey there! I'm glad to hear that you enjoy driving your car. However, it seems like you've been experiencing some issues with the engine design and the stock water pump. I can definitely understand how frustrating that can be. Overall though, it sounds like you have a good car on your hands!

  3. Cristobal Conroy 2024-01-24

I recently purchased a car with 113,000 miles, which is lower than any other car I have owned. Although I bought it from an auction and was unsure of its previous care, it ran great and was super fast. Unfortunately, some issues started to arise with the exhaust, window switches, suspension, and leaky valve covers. Despite my concerns, I held onto the car until the transmission failed and the first gear was completely destroyed. While I won't be owning one of these cars again, I'll be going back to my trusty mustangs which have lasted me up to 200,000 miles.

The 3.8 SC motor is actually under-rated at 240hp, which is quite different from the Japanese who tend to over-state their motor output. Interestingly, my stock motor on a Dyno put out 304 hp. If you're looking for Audi S4 performance, but with added reliability, then look no further than the Pontiac GTP. These engines are known for being bullet proof, with the occasional intake gasket being the only issue, which although time consuming, is not a terrible job and should cost no more than $500 at any shop. Additionally, the Wards top ten engine is mated to a reworked GM trans that is able to handle the extra output with ease.

  2. Haleigh Lind 2024-11-23

I love this Pontiac GTP! While no car is perfect, this one comes pretty close if you're looking for high performance at a low cost. The GTP runs hard right out of the gate, and with just a few small changes like a reduced diameter supercharger pulley and K&N intake, you can even keep up with Z-28's and Mustang Cobras. To me, the GTP is like the Grand National of the 90's. I'm actually on my 3rd GTP now, and I couldn't be happier!

  3. Tomas Hartmann 2024-11-15

So far, I'm really enjoying my Grand Prix. The GT with the 200 hp engine has the power I was looking for. Although, there is one thing that irritates me. When I hit small bumps in the road at about 25-30 mph, the sound of heavy plastic comes from the front of the car. But overall, I'm really enjoying this car and I haven't had any problems.

  4. Jed Lehner 2024-10-14

I chose this car myself at the age of 16 because it has good power and speed. Although the gas mileage is not great, it is still better than my previous 4-cylinder car. Unfortunately, the gas detector has gone out, leaving the gas gauge broken, and the air conditioner buttons break easily. However, it has a strong body that can withstand hail storms, and it looks slick.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to say that I really enjoyed reading about your car. It sounds like you made a great choice with the Grand Prix! Even though you were originally shopping for Accords, it seems like the 3800 V6 has been a great fit for you. I'm glad to hear that it has been reliable for you over the past 5 years, and that it has held up well despite a few small issues. It's always nice to find a car that not only looks good, but also has enough power to get you where you need to go. And it's even better when you can save some money in the process! Thanks for sharing your experience with us.
