2002 Pontiac Grand prix problems
The Grand Prix is a line of automobiles produced by the Pontiac Division of General Motors from 1962 until 2002 as coupes and from 1989 through 2008 model years as four-door sedans.
First introduced as a full-size performance coupe for the 1962 model year, the model varied repeatedly in size, luxury, and performance during its production. The Grand Prix was the most expensive coupe Pontiac offered until the 1970s, when the Bonneville Brougham and the Firebird Trans Am became more exclusive. Among the changes were positioning in the personal luxury car market segment and mid-size car offering from the second generation to the fifth generation for the sedan and from the second generation to the sixth generation from the coupe.
All Grand Prixs from 1962 through 1972 were pillarless hardtops (except for the 1967 convertible),

Common 2002 Pontiac Grand prix problems
Common Problems with the Pontiac Grand Prix 2002:
- Oil Pan Leaks: The 3800 engine in the Pontiac Grand Prix 2002 is prone to oil pan leaks. If you see oil around the oil pan where it bolts to the block, you have a leak. This is not an easy fix, as it may require lowering or removing the subframe.
- Electrical System Issues: Electrical problems are common in the Pontiac Grand Prix 2002, affecting various components such as window motors, lighting, ignition cylinder, and Heads Up Display (HUD). These issues can result from aftermarket modifications, faulty sensors, or loose solder in the circuit board. In some cases, they can lead to inconvenience, such as a non-functioning HUD, or more serious problems, like an ignition cylinder that won't allow the key to be removed.
- Engine Cooling System Issues: The engine cooling system in the Pontiac Grand Prix 2002 can have issues, such as leaking coolant or a cracked intake manifold gasket. These problems can lead to overheating, reduced engine performance, and expensive repairs. It is essential to check the area between the lower intake manifold and the cylinder head for coolant pooling or a black gasket, which indicates a problem with the intake manifold gasket.
- Suspension and Steering Components: Bushings and end links, such as top engine mounts, subframe bushings, sway bar end links, ball joints, and control arm bushings, can wear out and cause various issues, including noise, vibration, and handling problems. It is crucial to inspect these components when buying a used Grand Prix.
- Axles and CV Joints: The CV joints and boots on the axles can wear out, leading to grease leaks and potential failure. Inspect the passenger side boot, located near the firewall, for rips or tears, and listen for any odd sounds during test drives.
- Interior and HVAC Issues: The interior and HVAC systems in the Pontiac Grand Prix 2002 can have problems, such as creaking, malfunctioning seat heaters, and issues with cup holders and HVAC controls. It is essential to inspect these components for any signs of wear or damage.
These common problems with the Pontiac Grand Prix 2002 are based on complaints from owners and can help potential buyers and current owners understand the potential issues they may face with this vehicle. Regular maintenance and inspections can help prevent or address these problems, ensuring a safer and more reliable driving experience.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

- Fire: 1
- VIN: 1G2WP52K92F
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: MY CAR WOULDN'T START SO I CALLED AAA. THE MAN TRIED TO START THE CAR BEFORE HE ATTEMPTED TO JUMP IT. WHEN HE TURNED THE KEY, THE CAR EXPLODED AND CAUGHT FIRE. THANK GOODNESS HE HADN'T OPENED THE HOOD BECAUSE I WAS STANDING NEXT TO THE CAR AND COULD HAVE BEEN KILLED FROM THE FLYING DEBRIS. WHEN WE OPENED THE HOOD TO PUT OUT THE FIRE, THE INTAKE MANIFOLD WAS COMPLETELY DESTROYED AND IN PIECES. I ENDED UP HAVING THE CAR TOWED AND THEY REPLACED THE INTAKE MANIFOLD AND THE FUEL RAILS COSTING ME $900. YESTERDAY I WENT TO START THE CAR AND IT ACTED LIKE IT DIDN'T WANT TO START AGAIN BUT FINALLY IT DID BUT I DID HEAR A POP. WHEN I RESEARCHED THE PROBLEM ONLINE, I FOUND AN ARTICLE ABOUT CHEVY IMPALAS EXPLODING BUT FROM READING THE COMMENTS, IT APPEARS THIS IS A PROBLEM WITH ALL GM CARS FROM THAT TIME PERIOD. I'M LINKNG THE ARTICLE SO YOU CAN READ THE REVIEWS AND CAN SEE THAT THIS IS STILL AN ONGOING PROBLEM. THE OPENING COMMENT EXPLAINS THAT THERE WAS A PREVIOUS RECALL ABOUT THIS VERY SAME PROBLEM IN THE LATE 1990'S. THE PROBLEM IS WITH DEFECTIVE FUEL PRESSURE REGULATORS. EVERYTHING DESCRIBED IS EXACTLY WHAT HAPPENED WITH MY CAR ON FEBRUARY 6 OF THIS YEAR. I NOW KNOW I NEED TO HAVE THE REGULATOR REPLACED OR IT MIGHT HAPPEN AGAIN. I'M A SENIOR ON LIMITED INCOME AND I CAN'T AFFORD THIS EXPENSE, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT'S A PROBLEM THAT SHOULD HAVE BEEN FIXED WITH A RECALL. UNFORTUNATELY, I DIDN'T TAKE ANY PHOTOS OF THE INCIDENT BUT I HAVE THE REPAIR BILL AND I'M SURE I COULD GET A STATEMENT FROM THE AAA PERSON WHO WAS ALSO PRESENT WHEN IT HAPPENED. HERE IS THE LINK FOR FURTHER TESTIMONY SHOWING SOMEONE WROTE AS RECENTLY AS FEBRUARY 12 WITH THE SAME ISSUE. 2002 Pontiac Grand prix recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 7 recalls for different components of the 2002 Pontiac Grand prix.
- Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE
- Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 1998-1999 Chevrolet Lumina and Oldsmobile Intrigue, 1997-2004 Buick Regal and Pontiac Grand Prix, 2000-2004 Chevrolet Impala, and 1998-2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo vehicles. The affected vehicles were previously repaired under recalls 08V-118, 09V-116, and 15V-201 to address the possibility that engine oil may drip onto the hot exhaust manifold.
- Consequence: Engine oil that drips onto the hot surface of the exhaust manifold may result in a fire.
- Remedy: The remedy applied under recalls 08V-118, 09V-116, and 15V-201 did not adequately remove the safety risk. Under the improved remedy, dealers will replace the engines front valve cover and gasket. Vehicles that are covered by recalls 08V-118, 09V-116, or 15V-201 that have not yet received the original remedy will instead receive the improved remedy under the original recall number. The recall began on February 19, 2016. Owners may contact Chevrolet customer service at 1-800-222-1020, Buick customer service at 1-800-521-7300, Oldsmobile customer service at 1-800-442-6537 and Pontiac customer service at 1-800-458-8006. GM's number for this recall is 15757. Note: Until the improved remedy has been applied, owners are advised to park their vehicle outside since the fire risk exists even when the vehicle is unattended.

I had to buy a GM car because of a credit card rebate. After careful consideration, I decided that the Pontiac Grand Prix GT was the best option that GM had to offer. I previously owned a Maxima, and the difference between the two cars was like night and day. While the Maxima was superior in every way, the Grand Prix GT kept me happy for 18 months when compared to other GM models like Oldsmobile, Chevy, Buick (which should have been dropped), and Cadillac (which was way overpriced). However, I have now purchased a 03 Toyota Avalon XLS and I am bidding farewell to GM forever.

It's great to hear that you've never had to take your car back to the dealer for anything! It sounds like you take great care of it by doing your own maintenance like oil changes and tire rotations. The car runs perfectly and drives like new, which is fantastic. It's important to keep in mind that since it's a sport sedan, the ride may be a little stiff after being in it for a while, but that's to be expected. Overall, it sounds like you have a great car!

I've owned my car for 5 years now, and it's been a great investment. When I bought it, it had 60,000 miles on it, but it still runs like a dream even with 196,000 miles on the clock! It's perfect for families, with great gas mileage, comfort, and performance. I've been using Castrol GTX high mileage since I bought it, which I think has helped keep it running so well. The only issue I've had is with the back speakers, which only seem to work when the car is sitting in the sun at around 80 degrees outside!

Overall, I am happy with this vehicle. Although, I have experienced a rattle in the power windows and recently the air conditioning settings of 1 and 2 have gone bad. Unfortunately, it will cost 125.00 to fix. On the bright side, the car handles well and gets good mileage on the highway compared to the city.

I've owned this car for 2 1/2 years now and it's been trouble-free, except for the intake gaskets. It looks great for an old car and the acceleration for a 6 cylinder is fantastic. It's really fun to drive. Overall, I'd give this inexpensive GM product a very good rating.

I strongly advise against buying this car for your daughter. Despite having only 92,000 miles on it, I have already had to replace the air conditioning unit, alternator, and right side head gasket. This car is prone to frequent and costly repairs, and I cannot recommend it with confidence.

I bought a Pontiac car in 2009 with only 63000 miles on it. At first, I thought it would be a good choice for a 2002 model vehicle. However, I was disappointed with the cheap plastic interior. Unfortunately, I encountered too many problems to list in order to fix this car, and I was only able to put 8000 miles on it. Although it ran fairly well, I was unsure about its reliability on longer trips outside of town. As a result, I have decided to never purchase another Pontiac vehicle. Thank you for taking the time to read about my experience.

My husband and I spent a lot of time searching for the perfect car, but unfortunately, we ended up making a poor decision. Despite our careful planning, we have had a few issues with the car. At 20k, we had to have it towed due to a malfunctioning anti-theft device that cut the fuel after 10 seconds, but thankfully it was covered under warranty. At 25k, we had to replace the front wheel bearings, which was a $500 repair. Unfortunately, at 56k, both the intake manifold gaskets blew out, which cost us $700. To make matters worse, six months later, the head gaskets blew out and the heads may have been damaged from the heat. I use this car to commute 25 miles one way to work every day, and have only taken it to the dealer for repairs. Despite all of this, I have taken care of this car by the book. However, I am looking forward to trading it in for a better car.

Hey there! I just wanted to share my experience with this car. Personally, I wouldn't recommend it. I have one and it hasn't been the best. Just thought I'd give you a heads up!

My car has had numerous issues since I purchased it new. I have had to deal with window problems, a loose dash, intake gaskets that have needed to be replaced multiple times, a bad wheel bearing at only 34,000 miles, a replaced catalytic converter, and a heater that has never worked. Despite reporting these issues to the Gay Pontiac service center over 10 times, they have never been able to fix the problems. Additionally, the leather seats are coming apart and the door panels are loose, possibly due to all the window repairs. This is my second Grand Prix and eighth and final GM vehicle. I have decided to purchase a Toyota for my next vehicle. I have had poor experiences with GM's customer service, including the lack of support from the India-based GMACFS and Pontiac division customer service.
