1996 Pontiac Grand prix problems
The Grand Prix is a line of automobiles produced by the Pontiac Division of General Motors from 1962 until 2002 as coupes and from 1989 through 2008 model years as four-door sedans.
First introduced as a full-size performance coupe for the 1962 model year, the model varied repeatedly in size, luxury, and performance during its production. The Grand Prix was the most expensive coupe Pontiac offered until the 1970s, when the Bonneville Brougham and the Firebird Trans Am became more exclusive. Among the changes were positioning in the personal luxury car market segment and mid-size car offering from the second generation to the fifth generation for the sedan and from the second generation to the sixth generation from the coupe.
All Grand Prixs from 1962 through 1972 were pillarless hardtops (except for the 1967 convertible),

Common 1996 Pontiac Grand prix problems
Based on complaints from owners of the 1996 Pontiac Grand Prix, several common problems have been identified:
- Coolant Leaks and Overheating: Owners have reported issues with coolant leaks and overheating after replacing the water pump. This problem can be attributed to potential issues with the head gasket, faulty sensors, thermostats, or cooling system components like fans not functioning properly. The overheating tends to occur after the car has been running for a while, with intermittent patterns of overheating and cooling down, often requiring manual intervention like revving the engine to cool it down temporarily.
- Intake Gasket Problems: Some complaints suggest that the intake gaskets, particularly on the DOHC 3.4L engine, are prone to issues. This can lead to coolant leaks, overheating, and overall engine performance problems. The complexity of working on the DOHC 3.4L engine has been highlighted, making repairs challenging and potentially costly.
- General Maintenance Challenges: The 1996 Pontiac Grand Prix, especially with the DOHC 3.4L engine, is known for being difficult to work on, leading to higher labor rates due to the increased time required for repairs. This complexity can result in higher maintenance costs over time.
These common problems highlight the challenges faced by owners of the 1996 Pontiac Grand Prix, particularly related to cooling system issues, intake gasket problems, and the overall complexity of working on this specific model.

- Number Of Injuries: 1
- VIN: 1G2NE52M2TC
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: SATURDAY MARCH 8, 2003, I WAS ON MY WAY HOME FROM SHOPPING WITH MY 4-YEAR-OLD SON WHEN THE DRIVER SIDE AIRBAG OF MY 1996 PONTIAC GRAND AM EXPLODED IN MY FACE. THE DEPLOYMENT OF THE BAG FORCED MY ARM BACK INTO MY FACE SNAPPING MY HEAD BACK AND COMPLETELY DISORIENTING ME. ONCE I REGAINED MY BEARINGS I REALIZED I WAS NORTHBOUND IN THE SOUTHBOUND LANES OF WINSTON CHURCHILL BLVD. IN MISSISSAUGA. THE NEXT MORNING I WENT TO THE HOSPITAL TO HAVE MY ARM AND NECK LOOKED AT. FORTUNATELY MY ARM WASN'T BROKEN. IT WAS HOWEVER SEVERELY BRUISED AND STILL NON FUNCTIONAL. MY NECK WAS STILL VERY STIFF AND SORE. I AM CURRENTLY UNDERGOING TREATMENT FOR WHIPLASH AND LIGAMENT DAMAGE TO MY ARM. SINCE THE DATE OF THE ACCIDENT I HAVE FOUND OUT A FEW THINGS REGARDING MY 1996 PONTIAC GRAND AM. 1- THERE IS A SENSOR/MODULE UNDER THE CARPET UNDER THE FRONT PASSENGER SEAT THAT WHEN IN CONTACT WITH MOISTURE CAN CORRODE AND CAUSE THE AIRBAGS TO DEPLOY. 2- MY FIREWALL HAD BEEN LEAKING WATER UNDER MY CARPET TO THE AREA WHERE THIS SENSOR/MODULE IS LOCATED. MY FIREWALL IS SO RUSTED IT CAN?T BE REPAIRED. 3- GM CONSIDERS THIS A MAINTENANCE ISSUE. I CONTACTED TRANSPORT CANADA TO REPORT THE INCIDENT AND WAS INFORMED THAT THEY ARE CURRENTLY INVESTIGATING 1995-1999 PONTIAC GRAND AM'S FOR WATER LEAKING INTO THE CAR THROUGH THE FIREWALL AND POOLING ON THE FLOOR. THIS HAS CAUSED ?MANY? AIRBAGS TO DEPLOY WITHOUT WARNING. I HAVE ALSO READ MANY SIMILAR REPORTS ON THE NHTSA WEBSITE. A LOCAL GM DEALERSHIP HAD MY CAR FOR 17 DAYS WHILE GM INVESTIGATED BUT IN THE END I WAS TOLD THAT THE MODULE/SENSOR WAS TOO CORRODED TO READ THE INFORMATION STORED IN IT. I HAVE REQUESTED THE MODULE/SENSOR BACK. KEN LOCKE FROM GM CONTACTED ME HE SAID GM WAS WILLING TO DO SOMETHING FOR ME. GM WILL REPAIR MY AIRBAG SYSTEM IF I AGREE TO TWO THINGS. 1- I PAY FOR AND REPAIR THE WATER LEAK IN MY CAR (THE IRREPAIRABLE ONE) 2- I SIGN A RELEASE STATING THAT THIS MATTER IS CLOSED AND I HAVE NO FURTHER CLAIMS PERTAINING TO THIS MATTER. .

1996 Pontiac Grand prix recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 1996 Pontiac Grand prix.
- Manufacturer: DELPHI
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, OTHER:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY:PRESSURE RELIEF DEVICES
- Summary: CERTAIN DELPHI FUEL PRESSURE REGULATORS, P/NOS. FP10020-11B1, FP10026-11B1, AND FP10027-11B1, SOLD AFTER JANUARY 9, 2007, AS AFTERMARKET EQUIPMENT FOR VARIOUS PASSENGER VEHICLES LISTED ABOVE. THE UNIVERSAL PRESSURE REGULATORS (UPR) WERE PRODUCED WITHOUT AN O'RING AND RETAINER.
- Consequence: FUEL MAY LEAK, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN A FIRE.
- Remedy: DELPHI WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND REPLACE THE UPR FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON APRIL 23, 2007. OWNERS CAN CONTACT DELPHI AT 877-411-8770.
- Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
- Components: STEERING:RACK AND PINION
- Summary: CERTAIN PASSENGER VEHICLES HAVE LOWER PINION BEARINGS IN THE POWER RACK AND PINION ASSEMBLY IN WHICH THE RETAINER TABS WERE NOT CRIMPED PROPERLY. THESE RETAINERS COULD FAIL AND PERMIT THE BALL BEARINGS TO ESCAPE.
- Consequence: IF THIS OCCURS, THE PINION SHAFT CAN BE FORCED UPWARD DURING LEFT TURNS AND BACK DOWN AS THE STEERING WHEEL IS MOVED BACK AND TO THE RIGHT. IF THE PINION SHAFT MOVES FURTHER, THE DRIVER WILL NEED TO EXERT MORE EFFORT TO TURN THE STEERING WHEEL, SIMILAR TO A VEHICLE WITHOUT POWER ASSISTED STEERING. IF THE PINION SHAFT MOVES EVEN FURTHER, THE DRIVER WILL REQUIRE MUCH HIGHER EFFORT TO TURN LEFT AND MAY NOT BE ABLE TO TURN THE WHEEL AS MUCH AS INTENDED. WITH THE MAXIMUM PINION SHAFT MOVEMENT, WHICH REQUIRES INTERNAL GEAR COMPONENT DAMAGE, THE DRIVER CAN ENCOUNTER HIGH RESISTANCE TO TURNING LEFT, FOLLOWED BY UNINTENDED POWER ASSIST TO THE RIGHT. IN ANY OF THESE CONDITIONS, A CRASH COULD OCCUR.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A NEW LOWER PINION BEARING UNLESS INSPECT OF THE EXISTING BEARING INDICATES THAT REPLACEMENT OF THE GEAR ASSEMBLY IS NECESSARY. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN ON FEBRUARY 5, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT BUICK AT 1-866-608-8080; CHEVROLET AT 1-800-630-2438; OLDSMOBILE AT 1-800-630-6537; OR PONTIAC AT 1-800-620-7668.

This car is in great condition and it's a blast to drive around town!
-
Great car that is fun to drive and I will keep it until the wheels fall off.
-
I really appreciate my car, but my friends seem to like it even more than I do. Although my little 3100 SFI provides enough horsepower to get me where I want to go in style, it doesn't quite give me the feeling of a shuttle launch. However, I have an exciting plan to upgrade my car by dropping in a 3800 S/C L67. With a curb weight of only 3200 lbs, this car is relatively light for its type (especially compared to a T-bird). It's a fantastic car for those who love two-doors but don't want to feel like they and their friends are packed in like sardines.
-
I recently bought this car from my neighbors and it's my second car so far. It's been great! Although it needs some rust spots fixed up, there has been absolutely no major maintenance required so far, even though the car has 167,000 miles on it.
-
When I first saw the car, I fell in love with it because it had everything I wanted. Although I did have some issues with the transmission and engine, I still had fun driving it. The leather seats, sunroof, CD player, and heads up display made the inside of the car feel luxurious. Unfortunately, I had to trade it in because it needed a new engine and I spent over $6,000 in repairs during the 3 years I had it. Even though I haven't had it for 3 years, I still wish I did because it made me feel young. I would love to be driving it today if it didn't have any problems.

I'm so glad you were able to find such a great deal on your car! While the mechanical quality is very good, it seems like the interior workmanship could use some improvement. It's a shame that the plastic parts are loose and the tolerances are not up to Japanese standards. However, it's still a good looking car and seems to be reliable, which is great!
