pontiac logo

The Grand Prix is a line of automobiles produced by the Pontiac Division of General Motors from 1962 until 2002 as coupes and from 1989 through 2008 model years as four-door sedans.

First introduced as a full-size performance coupe for the 1962 model year, the model varied repeatedly in size, luxury, and performance during its production. The Grand Prix was the most expensive coupe Pontiac offered until the 1970s, when the Bonneville Brougham and the Firebird Trans Am became more exclusive. Among the changes were positioning in the personal luxury car market segment and mid-size car offering from the second generation to the fifth generation for the sedan and from the second generation to the sixth generation from the coupe.

All Grand Prixs from 1962 through 1972 were pillarless hardtops (except for the 1967 convertible),

SOMEONE SUGGESTED I LOOK INTO A RECALL AND NOW I AM BUT IT'S SAYING THAT MY MODEL WASN'T AFFECTED, WHICH CLEARLY IS AFFECTED.

2001 Pontiac Grand prix recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 10 recalls for different components of the 2001 Pontiac Grand prix.

2015-10-26
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING:ENGINE
  • Summary: General Motors LLC (GM) is recalling certain model year 1998-1999 Chevrolet Lumina and Oldsmobile Intrigue, 1997-2004 Buick Regal and Pontiac Grand Prix, 2000-2004 Chevrolet Impala, and 1998-2004 Chevrolet Monte Carlo vehicles. The affected vehicles were previously repaired under recalls 08V-118, 09V-116, and 15V-201 to address the possibility that engine oil may drip onto the hot exhaust manifold.
  • Consequence: Engine oil that drips onto the hot surface of the exhaust manifold may result in a fire.
  • Remedy: The remedy applied under recalls 08V-118, 09V-116, and 15V-201 did not adequately remove the safety risk. • Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL
  • Summary: ON CERTAIN PASSENGER, SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES AND MINI VANS, SOME OF THESE VEHICLES HAVE A PASSENGER AIR BAG THAT WAS MANUFACTURED WITHOUT A CHECK VALVE PIN. AN AIR BAG WITHOUT THE CHECK VALVE PIN COULD PRODUCE INCREASED PRESSURE AT THE ONSET OF THE AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT AND REDUCED PRESSURE AFTERWARD.
  • Consequence: THIS COULD INCREASE THE SEVERITY OF INJURY TO A PERSON WHO WAS NOT PROPERLY RESTRAINED AND WHO WAS CLOSE TO THE PASSENGER AIR BAG AT THE TIME OF DEPLOYMENT. IT COULD ALSO REDUCE THE AB8ILITY OF THE AIR BAG TO PROTECT A RESTRAINED FRONT SEAT PASSENGER.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT AND, IF NECESSARY, REPLACE THE PASSENGER AIR BAG. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN DECEMBER 16, 2002. • Manufacturer: GENERAL MOTORS CORP.
  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL
  • Summary: VEHICLE DESCRIPTION: PASSENGER, SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES AND MINIVANS. THE PASSENGER AIR BAG INFLATOR MODULES WERE BUILT WITHOUT THE CORRECT AMOUNT OF GENERANT, WHICH PRODUCES THE GAS THAT FILLS THE AIR BAG. SOME WERE BUILT WITH A DOUBLE LOAD OF GENERANT AND SOME WERE BUILT WITHOUT GENERANT.
  • Consequence: IN THE EVENT OF A CRASH THAT WOULD TRIGGER A PASSENGER AIR BAG DEPLOYMENT, A DOUBLE LOAD OF GENERANT CAN CAUSE THE INFLATOR MODULE TO EXPLODE. IF THE AIR BAG MODULE EXPLODES, METAL AND PLASTIC DEBRIS COULD CAUSE SEVERE INJURY TO VEHICLE OCCUPANT. A MODULE WITH NO GENERANT WOULD NOT INFLATE THE AIR BAG, AND THE OCCUPANTS COULD RECEIVE MORE SEVERE INJURIES.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE PASSENGER AIR BAG MODULE. TELEPHONE CALLS WERE MADE TO OWNERS ON JANUARY 29, 2001. FOLLOW UP OWNER MAILING BEGAN ON APRIL 17, 2001. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT CHEVROLET AT 1-800-222-1020, PONTIAC AT 1-800-762-2737, OR SATURN AT 1-800-553-6000.

Negative 2001 Pontiac Grand prix car reviews

  1. Jarrod West 2024-09-14

This car was great for the first 50K miles then unfortunately things started to fall apart. The catalytic converter went out at about 55K, and the transmission started operating real sloppy. From there the transmission went downhill. The transmission had a certain lag when you needed to accelerate and it started making funny noises. At 85K the transmission started dropping into gears and continued to sound worse. I hope my experience helps others make an informed decision.

  2. Fermin Kulas 2024-08-29

It's been a reliable and comfortable mode of transportation, but it hasn't quite lived up to the 'fun to drive' expectations that were set by some automotive reviews.

  3. Reed Schneider 2024-08-12

This car has had some issues with repairs, but I have taken care of it well. I have replaced the brakes, oil filters, fluids, and other necessary parts for a high mileage car. However, I have noticed that my repair costs have been increasing since the fourth year of ownership. Despite this, I have taken care of the car and have had the transmission replaced at 120k miles, three master cylinders, brake lines twice, three EGR valves, ball joints, and the sending unit. I have also addressed electrical issues such as grounds rotting off and switches failing early at 40k miles. Additionally, I have taken care of rusting early at 50k miles through weekly washing and professional detailing twice a year. Although there have been some issues with the car, I have taken care of it and ensured that it is in good condition.

  4. Barrett Doyle 2024-05-09

I had to get a new transmission after 65,000 miles and I don't even drive roughly.

  5. Quinten Bode 2024-03-20

I see you've had a few cars in the past! The first one was an '89 and you loved it, but unfortunately it got totaled in a side impact. Luckily, you only got a scratch. Then you had a '97 Grand Am, which was okay but not very sturdy and needed too many repairs. You traded it in for an '01 GP, which you loved for its awesome handling, good mileage, and sharp looks. Even though you rolled it four times after taking a corner a little too fast, you still walked away. Now you're considering an '02 G.P. G.T. Let me know if you need any advice or recommendations!

Positive 2001 Pontiac Grand prix car reviews

  1. Jarrett Sipes 2025-01-06

Excellent acceleration and power. Tight handling. Very comfortable. A blast to drive!!

  2. Darian Kerluke 2024-11-20

This car is amazing, both inside and out! It's a real head-turner and performs exceptionally well on the road. Plus, I got it for a steal of a price!

  3. Christian Hagenes 2024-11-19

I love the look of the vehicle and the performance under the hood! The car handles really well and has been mostly mechanically sound. Although, I have experienced some problems such as loose wiring that caused the power seat to stick and the transmission going out on us. However, both of these issues were quickly fixed and covered under warranty. The power driver's seat is a bit uncomfortable and on rough textured roads, the road noise can be quite loud. But all in all, I would definitely recommend this car to anyone looking for a moderately priced sedan with enough horsepower to satisfy the lead foot in all of us!

  4. Raoul Bernier 2024-10-12

The handling of the Grand Prix is excellent. It handles better than any car I have owned in the past. The 2001 to 2003 models have the best design out of all the Grand Prix models. It looks sporty and performs like a sports car. The fuel mileage is not the best, as I only average 22mpg with highway and city driving. My Ford Explorer gets the same mileage, and that has four-wheel drive. Other than that, it is a great choice!

  5. Tony Emmerich 2024-09-18

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with the Grand Prix. I purchased this car about 3 months ago and I must say, it has been an absolute joy to drive. Not only is it flashy and powerful, but it also has a great build and excellent fuel efficiency. I highly recommend it!
