2006 Pontiac Grand prix problems

pontiac logo

The Grand Prix is a line of automobiles produced by the Pontiac Division of General Motors from 1962 until 2002 as coupes and from 1989 through 2008 model years as four-door sedans.

First introduced as a full-size performance coupe for the 1962 model year, the model varied repeatedly in size, luxury, and performance during its production. The Grand Prix was the most expensive coupe Pontiac offered until the 1970s, when the Bonneville Brougham and the Firebird Trans Am became more exclusive. Among the changes were positioning in the personal luxury car market segment and mid-size car offering from the second generation to the fifth generation for the sedan and from the second generation to the sixth generation from the coupe.

All Grand Prixs from 1962 through 1972 were pillarless hardtops (except for the 1967 convertible),

Common 2006 Pontiac Grand prix problems

The Pontiac Grand Prix 2006 has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners of this car.

One of the most common issues is the water pump failing prematurely. This problem can lead to engine overheating, which can cause severe damage to the engine if not addressed promptly. The water pump is responsible for circulating coolant through the engine to keep it at a safe temperature. When it fails, the coolant cannot flow properly, and the engine can overheat.

Another common problem is the oil pump drive O-ring leaking oil from the rear of the engine. This issue can cause the engine to lose oil, which can lead to engine damage if not addressed promptly. The oil pump drive O-ring is a small seal that helps to prevent oil from leaking out of the engine. When it fails, oil can leak out of the engine and onto the ground.

Corrosion at ignition coil towers is also a common problem with the Pontiac Grand Prix 2006. This issue can cause the ignition system to fail, which can lead to the engine not starting or running poorly. The ignition coil towers are where the ignition coils are located, and they can corrode over time, especially if the car is driven in areas with a lot of salt or moisture.

The 7th generation Grand Prix, which includes the 2006 model, has been reported to have low beam headlights that can suddenly shut off even though the lights themselves are perfectly fine. The issue is a defective headlamp driver module, which is responsible for distributing power to the lights. This problem can be dangerous, especially when driving at night or in low-visibility conditions.

Another common problem with the Pontiac Grand Prix 2006 is the car suddenly shutting off while driving. This problem can be dangerous, especially if it occurs while driving at high speeds or in heavy traffic.

In summary, the Pontiac Grand Prix 2006 has several common problems based on complaints from owners of this car. These problems include water pump failure, oil pump drive O-ring leaks, corrosion at ignition coil towers, defective headlamp driver modules, and the car suddenly shutting off while driving. It is important to address these issues promptly to prevent further damage to the car and ensure safe driving.

  • Number Of Injuries: 3
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 2G2WR584461
  • Components: STEERING,AIR BAGS,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: got cutoff on a busy highway going 70mph and they slammed their brakes. i had 6 car lengths between us and immediately started braking but we were just skidding. I had the choice of hitting the vehicle or swerving left towards the median. I chose the latter. The steering locked up, the abs did NOT kick in and the airbags did NOT deploy. we hit a median at 70mph and no airbags?! I was point of impact. It hit the front drivers side, destroying the light and entire front. the car spun around and it hit again but this time it was the back passenger side/light. Again, NO airbags deployed. So my abs, steering, and airbags all had issues. We are so lucky no one is hurt in severeity but I am beyond fuming, scared, and confused why all of those locked up/failed to serve their purpose! Most severe injuries were me with contusions, strains, and a herniated disc in my neck (likely to cause chronic pain, per doctor.) cop already found me not at fault so no ticket/points, to give an idea. person kept driving. one person stopped and happened to be 4 cars behind us and verified what happened to us. The vehicle is totaled. We are sol on a car now as insurance said it wasn't worth having collision considering how old it was... never had an accident or ticket in 10+ years of driving. the car failed me.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-01-23
  • VIN: 2G2WP582661
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: MY 2006 PONTIAC GRAND PRIX EXPERIENCES HEADLAMPS TURNING OFF WITHOUT WARNING WHILE THE VEHICLE IS IN MOTION, AND NOT BEING ABLE TO GET THEM TO TURN BACK ON AGAIN. I DRIVE COUNTRY ROADS HOME FROM WORK AT NIGHT WHERE THERE ARE NO STREETLIGHTS AND THE SPEED LIMIT IS 45-50 MPH. THIS IS A SERIOUS SAFETY HAZARD ! ! ! IT IS SOCIALLY IRRESPONSIBLE FOR GM TO IGNORE THIS ISSUE. FOR SOME REASON 2006 PONTIAC GRAND PRIX IS NOT PART OF GMS PRODUCT SAFETY RECALL (RECALL NUMBER: 14291 WHICH ONLY REPLACES THE HEADLAMP DRIVER MODULE HDM FUSE). I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE THE HDM RELAY TWICE ALREADY, WHICH ONLY LASTS FOR ABOUT 4 MONTHS BEFORE BURNING OUT AGAIN. OBVIOUSLY THE PROBLEM IS NOT JUST WITH THE FUSE BUT LIKELY WITH THE ELECTRICAL WIRING OR THE FUSE BOX ITSELF. THIS SERIOUS PROBLEM MUST BE INVESTIGATED MORE THOROUGHLY BEFORE SOMEBODY IS KILLED. I DID READ THAT 2006 PONTIAC GRAND PRIX WAS OFFERED AN EXTENDED WARRANTY PROGRAM FOR PROBLEMS STEMMING FROM THE HEADLAMP MODULES FOR 12 YEARS OR 150,000 MILES, WHICHEVER HAPPENS FIRST. UNFORTUNATELY, THE HEADLAMP PROBLEM JUST BEGAN FOR ME IN 2019 AT WHICH POINT THE CAR WAS 13 YRS OLD AND WAS NOT COVERED BY THE EXTENDED WARRANTY PROGRAM OR THE SAFETY RECALL, WHICH IS SIMPLY ABSURD ! AT THE VERY LEAST GM SHOULD NOW INCLUDE THE 2006 PONTIAC GRAND PRIX MODEL IN THE 14291 PRODUCT SAFETY RECALL. BUT GM REALLY NEEDS TO RELEASE A PERMANENT FIX FOR THE PROBLEM RATHER THAN A TEMPORARY FUSE REPLACEMENT EVERY COUPLE MONTHS. HAS ANYONE INVESTIGATED IF THESE OVERHEATED HEADLAMP DRIVER MODULE RELAYS HAVE CAUSED ELECTRICAL FIRES OR MELTED THE UNDER HOOD BUSSED FUSEBOX? IF GM IS NOT WILLING TO STEP UP AND TAKE RESPONSIBILITY, I HOPE WE CONSUMERS CAN COUNT ON THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION (NHTSA) OFFICE OF DEFECTS INVESTIGATION (ODI) TO FORCE GM TO DO THE RIGHT THING. THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR LOOKING INTO THIS SERIOUS MATTER.

  • Summary: MY GRANDPARENT GAVE ME THE CAR A FEW YEARS AGO, AND I LOST POWER TO ALL FUNCTIONS OF HEADLIGHTS. I COULD NOT TURN THEM AT ALL, WHETHER THE CAR WAS STATIONARY OR MOVING. I THEN REPLACED A FUSE THAT FIXED THE PROBLEM BRIEFLY. AFTER AWHILE, MY HEADLIGHTS BEGAN TO STAY ON AFTER I HAVE SHUT THE CAR OFF. DURING THIS TIME, MY HIGH BEAMS WERE THE ONLY FUNCTION THAT WORKED. DUE TO THIS ONGOING PROBLEM, I HAVE HAD TO REPLACE MULTIPLE BATTERIES AT LEAST THREE TIMES. I HAVE DONE RESEARCH AND THE 2007 GRAND PRIX MODELS WERE RECALLED FOR THIS SAME EXACT ISSUE. IFM ASKING THAT GM EXTENT THE RECALL TO THE 2006 MODEL YEAR SO THIS ISSUE, THAT I HAVE DEALING WITH FOR YEARS, CAN FINALLY BE RESOLVED.

2006 Pontiac Grand prix recalls

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 2006 Pontiac Grand prix.

2014-07-03
  • Manufacturer: General Motors LLC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM:IGNITION
  • Summary: This defect can affect the safe operation of the airbag system. Until this recall is performed, customers should remove all items from their key rings, leaving only the ignition key. The key fob (if applicable), should also be removed from the key ring. General Motors LLC (GM) notified the agency on July 3, 2014, that they are recalling 5,877,718 model year 2000-2005 Chevrolet Impala and Monte Carlo, 1997-2003 Chevrolet Malibu, 2004-2005 Malibu Classic, 1999-2004 Oldsmobile Alero, 1998-2002 Oldsmobile Intrigue, 1999-2005 Pontiac Grand Am and 2004-2008 Pontiac Grand Prix vehicles. In these models, the weight on the key ring and/or road conditions or some other jarring event may cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position, turning off the engine.
  • Consequence: If the key is not in the run position, the air bags may not deploy if the vehicle is involved in a crash, increasing the risk of injury.
  • Remedy: GM will notify owners, and dealers will install two key rings and an insert in the key slot or a cover over the key head on all ignition keys, free of charge. The recall began on September 9, 2014. GM's number for this recall is 14350.

A POTENTIAL MATERIAL OR DESIGN DEFECT COULD RESULT IN THE STEERING KNUCKLE BREAKING IN THE HUB AREA.
  • Consequence: A BROKEN STEERING KNUCKLE COULD RESULT IN LOSS OF STEERING CONTROL AND A POSSIBLE CRASH WITHOUT WARNING.
  • Remedy: DORMAN WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND REPLACE THE DEFECTIVE STEERING KNUCKLES FREE OF CHARGE AND REIMBURSE THE REPAIR FACILITY OR OWNER FOR LABOR. THE RECALL BEGAN ON FEBRUARY 23, 2009. OWNERS MAY CONTACT DORMAN'S TOLL-FREE HOTLINE AT 1-800-523-2492 AND PRESS 5.

Negative 2006 Pontiac Grand prix car reviews

  1. Damion Farrell 2024-11-03

I highly recommend purchasing a 2007/2008 model with a powertrain warranty of 100k miles instead of 35k or GM certified used. My personal experience with the base model has been less than satisfactory. The factory warranty ran out at 35k miles and I encountered several issues such as the A/C system failure, transmission rebuild, and malfunctioning heater and front wheel hubs. These repairs have been costly, with out of pocket expenses totaling $2,874.76. It is important to consider the extended warranty when purchasing a vehicle to avoid unexpected expenses.

  2. Devon Botsford 2024-04-20

I was really impressed by the review and specs on this website. It seems like they have the most accurate information compared to other websites. I noticed that the editor, Dan, gave a lower rating for Pontiacs, but everyone has their own preferences. Personally, I have owned Fords, Dodges, VWs, and more, but this car is the best value for the money. It runs perfectly without any strange noises or engine issues.

  3. Michale Feil 2024-02-27

I bought this pontiac used in 2007. I know I do not know what the history of the car was before this other than carfax being clean, it has had many issues. Now has 50,000 miles on it and just had to replace power steering rack b/c of leak, I have a valve that has broken and has to e replaced to turn off check engine light (was told this is really common in these cars by dealer due to design flaw and freezing water breaking a valve in low temperatures), and my drivers side window motor has broken. I was also told by dealer in replacing my power steering rack that my tire rod in the front is shot and will need to be replaced soon. Only 50,000 miles!

Positive 2006 Pontiac Grand prix car reviews

  1. Wilson Emmerich 2024-11-07

When I purchased this vehicle in June 2014, everything seemed fine. However, after about 1.5 months, the brakes went bad. I took it back to the dealership and they replaced them, but unfortunately, they did not replace the drilled rotors (which I found out much later). Even though I don't drive this car hard, I had to replace the drilled rotors and premium brake pads in less than 8 months. Additionally, I have had to replace the serpentine belts twice, water pumps, and deal with excessive oil consumption due to a small oil leak. There is also a noise when I drive under my car that no one seems to be able to identify. I have replaced the throttle and battery within a year of buying it. Now, the Torque converter clutch is going bad. This is my second grand prix. My first was a GT V6, which I bought used at 75k miles and sold at 110k miles. I am sad to say that I will have to part ways with this current vehicle.

This car has been an absolute pleasure to own! I've had it since it was brand new, and even after being in a head-on collision, I can confidently say that these cars are incredibly safe. I came out of the accident with only a minor injury to my hand, and my passenger was perfectly fine. The car's performance was outstanding, and with just a K&N filter on the engine, it was both fast and efficient. I could go from 0-60 in just 6.3 seconds, and my average fuel economy never dropped below 28mpg. Of course, the economy stats on this car depend on the way you drive it - at the floor, you'll get 4.3mpg, but at 59mph with the cruise set, you'll get an impressive 31-35mpg. Personally, I think these cars have a bit too much power for their size, and that's coming from a 20-year-old! Thanks for reading.

Hey there! I just wanted to share my thoughts on my new car. I've owned a few cars in the past, including a 96 Olds Aurora with the 4.0 V8 (great car!) and a 02 V6 powered 300m. But let me tell you, I don't miss the 300m one bit since trading it in for the GXP. The GXP's V8 power is seriously impressive, with loads of horsepower and torque that make winning stoplight races a breeze. And the exhaust note? It reminds me of a sixties muscle car - so cool! Despite having a performance suspension and low profile tires, the ride is still pretty decent. I will say that the fuel economy is a bit lower than what was shown on the window sticker, but who wants to drive this car slow anyway? There's just no substitute for American V8 power!

I love my new Grand Prix! The engine is exceptionally dependable and easily modified, making me feel secure with my purchase. Although I've never owned a GP like this one before, I find it easy to maintain, with smooth shifting and a somewhat powerful performance (although it could use some mods). The factory sound system is more than I expected, with plenty of bass to keep me happy for a while. However, the shifty squeaking/clicking in the steering column is something I could do without. Overall, I'm really happy with my purchase!

...and not too expensive. It's the most fun car I've ever driven, and it's safe too. It holds the road like glue, goes like a bat out of hell, and stops on a dime. Sorry for the cliches, but they're all true. And the best part? I got it for below 28 grand! It's a totally loaded v8 rocketship that is both quiet and dependable.
