The Dodge Durango is a mid-size/full-size SUV produced by Dodge starting with the 1998 model year. The first two generations were very similar in that both were based on the Dodge Dakota and Dodge Ram, both featured a body-on-frame construction and both were produced at the Newark Assembly Plant in Newark, Delaware through the 2009 model year.

The third-generation Durango began with the 2011 model year. It is built on the same platform as the Jeep Grand Cherokee, features unibody construction, and has been assembled at the Jefferson North Assembly Plant in Detroit, Michigan since late 2010.

Each generation had options for different engine sizes and power ratings, with different transmissions also. In 2009 a hybrid variant was introduced, but ended quickly with the second generation Durango. From 2007 to 2009 the Durango was available as the Chrysler Aspen from Chrysler. Over two million Durangos have been sold since it was introduced in 1998.

Common Dodge Durango problems

The Dodge Durango is a powerful SUV that has its fair share of problems. Here are some of the most common issues reported by owners:

  • Water Passing Through the Windshield's Cowl Screen: Some Durango owners have reported water passing through the windshield's cowl screen during heavy rainstorms or when going through a car wash. This problem can be solved by investing in a revised cowl screen at approximately $88-$111.
  • Clogged Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Tube: A clogged EGR tube can result in engine stalling or a rough idle. However, this problem has a simple fix - cleaning the EGR tube will often solve the problem.
  • Failing Camshaft Position Sensor: Dodge Durango vehicles with the 5.7-liter V8 engine may experience a failing Camshaft position sensor, causing the engine to stall or not start. This requires a replacement Camshaft position sensor, generally costing $88-$111.
  • Musty Smell in the HVAC System: Some Durango owners have reported an unpleasant musty smell circulating in the HVAC system. To combat this problem, Dodge offers a cleanser and an evaporator coating to help prevent odor-causing bacteria.

While these problems are inconvenient and frustrating, most of them are not too serious. However, a problem that is cause for concern is the stalling engine caused by a clogged EGR tube or failing Camshaft position sensor. According to RepairPal, drivers experiencing these issues have had their Durango stall while driving on the highway or turning at an intersection, resulting in one driver calling the engine failure "very scary and dangerous".

Despite its problems, the Dodge Durango has received overall positive reviews from critics. Car and Driver gives it a score of 8/10, stating that while it may not be the most practical SUV, it is one of the coolest. In particular, the reviewer notes that the Durango is fun to drive, with a comfortable ride and an impressive towing capacity.

In summary, while the Dodge Durango has its fair share of problems, it is generally well-reviewed and may be a good bet if you're hunting for a Dodge SUV. However, it's essential to understand a vehicle's pitfalls before you commit.

Dodge Durango 2013
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-11
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-24
  • VIN: 1C4SDHCT7DC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: 2012 Durango. While driving, Battery symbol appeared on dash. I immediately started to pull over , by the time i got to a safe area, there was smoke coming from under the hood. I opened it and saw smoke coming directly from the alternator. After the smoke dissipated, i tried to turn on the vehicle and it would not start. I towed the vehicle home, changed the alternator and the battery with new items from Autozone, and the vehicle still would not start. There were no codes popping up as well. Towed it to the dealership and it turned out that it fried the ECM. Why wouldnt there be a fuse or something to protect the computer from a surge off of the alternator. Well, the dealer changed out the computer and with intermittent issues afterwards, the car would not start all the time. thought the starter was going bad. Changed that and it was still having issues, not starting. took it back to the dealership. after the dealership replaced the starter (to verify that it wasnt the issue), it turns out the TIPM is partially burnt out. So the alternator broke both computers.

  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-22
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: 1C4SDJCT2DC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: While driving on the highway last night, my husband smelled smoke and then his eyes began to burn. As he was about to pull over, a flame fell from the passenger sun visor! There was more smoke and fire as he pulled over. The car became engulfed in flames fairly quickly. Thankfully he was alone without other family members (or our dog) and he was able to get out safely. He had to stand on the side of the highway waiting for responders. It was towed and we are in the process of speaking with insurance and figuring out what to do next. Today we researched Dodge Durango car fire and came across the recall from 2014 which SPECIFICALLY said passenger sun visor fire hazard! Clearly that is exactly what happened. We have proof that we brought the vehicle to the dealership in 2014 to complete this recall. However it appears based on internet searches that this was still an issue even after recalls were performed. There were no warnings/messages prior to the failure.

I am told that the engine can cease up while driving, and that I should not be driving the vehicle. I think my vehicle should be included, especially since this X56 warranty extension has been out since 2014. How do I get this X56 warranty on my vehicle? And how do I get reimbursed for the cost of the repair?

Latest negative Dodge Durango car reviews

  1. Deonte Yundt 2024-11-29

    Vehicle year: 2011

After 9 months of owning my Durango, I experienced issues with starting the vehicle even after replacing the alternator, starter, and relays. Despite returning to the car lot, they were unable to exchange the vehicle. However, I am confident in my ability to find a solution to this problem.

  2. Salvatore Mraz 2024-11-24

    Vehicle year: 2022

I purchased a 2018 Third Durango (RT/AWD) and unfortunately it was totaled just three months after purchase due to someone pulling out in front of me. However, I remained determined to find the perfect vehicle and upgraded to a 2019 model. Despite my efforts, it did not have enough amenities for my liking, so I decided to trade it in for a 2021 RT. Unfortunately, it has been at the dealership since 1/26 and there is no sign of it being returned anytime soon. This is my fourth return to the dealership for Uconnect Box service and I have had a star case manager since October. After a long wait, the engineers finally approved a replacement, but both ordered replacements have failed. Despite the challenges, I remain confident that the dealership and case manager will work together to resolve the issue. It is worth noting that my model trim is not listed in the drop-down for vehicle details, but I am confident that the dealership will be able to assist me with any questions or concerns I may have regarding my 2021 RT 4dr 3.6 6cyl.

  3. Mohammed Bechtelar 2024-11-22

I have owned SUVs from Chevy, Ford, and Dodge, and I can confidently say that this is the worst one. While my Ford Explorer lasted for 100,000 miles with no major issues and my Chevy Trailblazer had no problems during the short time I owned it, this SUV has been a major headache. Despite taking it back to the dealer three times for the same issue, it still refuses to shift into higher gears, and the tachometer has jumped between 1 and 2 for no apparent reason. Additionally, the A/C does not cool off the back seat at all, and the plastic around both front seats has broken. It's disappointing to have all these problems with only 27,000 miles on the vehicle. I have decided to return to Ford and will not be considering Dodge again. It's unfortunate because my parents both drive Dodges, and we used to be a Dodge family.

The engine oil pressure problems have been persistent since the early stages. Despite being in the shop at least four times for the same issue, Dodge refuses to repair it under warranty, citing 'shoddy' maintenance as the cause. However, I have always performed appropriate maintenance and the dealer claimed engine sludge problems caused the issue at 23,000 miles. I am confident in my case and may have to resort to legal action to get it resolved so that I can sell the vehicle. It is my recommendation to avoid Durango and Dodge unless you are a masochist. Unfortunately, there has been no support from the dealer or manufacturer.

We recently purchased a car, but unfortunately, it had to be towed within 48 hours. When we contacted the dealership, they were not very helpful and did not offer any assistance. Additionally, we did not receive our tag and had to follow up with the salesman multiple times. The car was also not in the best condition when we arrived, despite the dealership knowing we were coming. The cabin filter was full of cotton and there were other cosmetic issues that were not disclosed to us beforehand. Overall, the service we received was not up to par. Please be aware of these issues if you are considering purchasing a car from this dealership.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to let you know that the Black 2021 Durango R/T with a Power Sunroof you were interested in has had its dues paid in full. Let me know if you have any questions or if there's anything else I can help you with!

I recently had the opportunity to test drive the Durango in snowy conditions and I was thoroughly impressed. Even when attempting doughnuts, the 5.7L hemi prevented any sideways sliding. Additionally, the vehicle handled corners with ease, almost as if it were driving on dry roads. The Durango's use of Subaru's technology, which is six years newer, along with Goodyear all season tires, makes it a standout choice. In comparison to the Toyo Open County AT, which sipped fuel, I was able to turn in the same circle without losing control. Overall, I am still in awe of the Durango's performance.

I traded in my 2005 Magnum R/T reluctantly as we needed more room (3rd Row) and the AWD reliability living in Boston for a used 2013 Durango R/T(54,000miles). It's my Maggy with road clearance and AWD! I love the interior; it's very roomy for a wider guy and has plenty of legroom for the rear passengers as well. I've had it for just over a year and have had no major problems (fingers crossed). I even took it for a GT of mid America (Boston to Missouri and back) 3000+ mile round trip, and it performed flawlessly! I even got 28 MPG's on the way home! Not even kidding- I took a picture of it if you don't believe me! I don't get nearly that tooling around town @ 7.5-10 MPGs per week. The pick-up is great, but my only real complaint is the transmission. It never seems to be in the right gear when I accelerate. It will bog down then kind of struggle for a second looking or figuring out which gear to go to, then the tach jumps and the engine revs with even a little pressure on the gas. I think it's too many gears for the truck. But other than that, it's been everything I wanted it to be. Still a Mopar Guy!

We bought the Durango especially for its build inside and out. I'm so glad to hear that it also came with Flex Fuel, what a great addition for us! I love the power and it has an excellent turning radius. However, I do think the storage in the console and glove box is very small for such a big SUV.

The 2003 Dodge Durango R/T is a fantastic SUV that outshines its competitors. It boasts an excellent engine combination of HP (250 stock - 295 expandable @ 3800-4000 RPM) and torque (350 - 380 @ 3000RPM), making it an SUV/Sports Car hybrid. Its performance, comfortable ride, and looks are unmatched by any other vehicle in its class. It even rivals the large SUVs in internal comfort and amenities. With a towing capacity of 7000#, there's not much this SUV can't do. As 2003 marks the final year for the R/T (welcome the 2004 5.7 Hemi Durango), this model is destined to become a classic.
