Dodge Durango problems
The Dodge Durango is a mid-size/full-size SUV produced by Dodge starting with the 1998 model year. The first two generations were very similar in that both were based on the Dodge Dakota and Dodge Ram, both featured a body-on-frame construction and both were produced at the Newark Assembly Plant in Newark, Delaware through the 2009 model year.
The third-generation Durango began with the 2011 model year. It is built on the same platform as the Jeep Grand Cherokee, features unibody construction, and has been assembled at the Jefferson North Assembly Plant in Detroit, Michigan since late 2010.
Each generation had options for different engine sizes and power ratings, with different transmissions also. In 2009 a hybrid variant was introduced, but ended quickly with the second generation Durango. From 2007 to 2009 the Durango was available as the Chrysler Aspen from Chrysler. Over two million Durangos have been sold since it was introduced in 1998.

Common Dodge Durango problems
The Dodge Durango is a powerful SUV that has its fair share of problems. Here are some of the most common issues reported by owners:
- Water Passing Through the Windshield's Cowl Screen: Some Durango owners have reported water passing through the windshield's cowl screen during heavy rainstorms or when going through a car wash. This problem can be solved by investing in a revised cowl screen at approximately $88-$111.
- Clogged Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Tube: A clogged EGR tube can result in engine stalling or a rough idle. However, this problem has a simple fix - cleaning the EGR tube will often solve the problem.
- Failing Camshaft Position Sensor: Dodge Durango vehicles with the 5.7-liter V8 engine may experience a failing Camshaft position sensor, causing the engine to stall or not start. This requires a replacement Camshaft position sensor, generally costing $88-$111.
- Musty Smell in the HVAC System: Some Durango owners have reported an unpleasant musty smell circulating in the HVAC system. To combat this problem, Dodge offers a cleanser and an evaporator coating to help prevent odor-causing bacteria.
While these problems are inconvenient and frustrating, most of them are not too serious. However, a problem that is cause for concern is the stalling engine caused by a clogged EGR tube or failing Camshaft position sensor. According to RepairPal, drivers experiencing these issues have had their Durango stall while driving on the highway or turning at an intersection, resulting in one driver calling the engine failure "very scary and dangerous".
Despite its problems, the Dodge Durango has received overall positive reviews from critics. Car and Driver gives it a score of 8/10, stating that while it may not be the most practical SUV, it is one of the coolest. In particular, the reviewer notes that the Durango is fun to drive, with a comfortable ride and an impressive towing capacity.
In summary, while the Dodge Durango has its fair share of problems, it is generally well-reviewed and may be a good bet if you're hunting for a Dodge SUV. However, it's essential to understand a vehicle's pitfalls before you commit.

Dodge Durango 2013
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-11
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-24
- VIN: 1C4SDHCT7DC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: 2012 Durango. While driving, Battery symbol appeared on dash. I immediately started to pull over , by the time i got to a safe area, there was smoke coming from under the hood. I opened it and saw smoke coming directly from the alternator. After the smoke dissipated, i tried to turn on the vehicle and it would not start. I towed the vehicle home, changed the alternator and the battery with new items from Autozone, and the vehicle still would not start. There were no codes popping up as well. Towed it to the dealership and it turned out that it fried the ECM. Why wouldnt there be a fuse or something to protect the computer from a surge off of the alternator. Well, the dealer changed out the computer and with intermittent issues afterwards, the car would not start all the time. thought the starter was going bad. Changed that and it was still having issues, not starting. took it back to the dealership. after the dealership replaced the starter (to verify that it wasnt the issue), it turns out the TIPM is partially burnt out. So the alternator broke both computers.

- Fire: 1
- VIN: 1C4SDJCT2DC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: While driving on the highway last night, my husband smelled smoke and then his eyes began to burn. As he was about to pull over, a flame fell from the passenger sun visor! There was more smoke and fire as he pulled over. The car became engulfed in flames fairly quickly. Thankfully he was alone without other family members (or our dog) and he was able to get out safely. He had to stand on the side of the highway waiting for responders. It was towed and we are in the process of speaking with insurance and figuring out what to do next. Today we researched Dodge Durango car fire and came across the recall from 2014 which SPECIFICALLY said passenger sun visor fire hazard! Clearly that is exactly what happened. We have proof that we brought the vehicle to the dealership in 2014 to complete this recall. However it appears based on internet searches that this was still an issue even after recalls were performed. There were no warnings/messages prior to the failure.

Dodge Durango 2013

- VIN: 1C4RDHDG6DC
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: My 2013 Durango with 124,000 miles has a check engine light on, that indicates cylinder 4 miss fire. The Airpark Dodge service department where I purchased the vehicle has done a diagnostic evaluation and determined that the left cylinder head needs replacing. That falls within the X56 engine left cylinder head extended warranty for some VIN # vehicles, but not mine. The estimated repair is over $5000.00. I am told that the engine can cease up while driving, and that I should not be driving the vehicle. I think my vehicle should be included, especially since this X56 warranty extension has been out since 2014. How do I get this X56 warranty on my vehicle? And how do I get reimbursed for the cost of the repair?

My second Tahoe had done about 184K miles. Before that, I had owned 2 Blazers, 2 Grand Cherokees, and a Land Rover. As I turned 60, I decided that this would be my last car. I had good luck with Jeeps, and my son had a beautiful 2018 SRT Durango, so I went back to Dodge. However, I made a mistake by getting a Journey. It was a great little car, but as a car guy who had built hot rods, I was wrong to think that I was ready to settle down and wanted to get something sporty, not an old man's car. After 7 months and 5600 miles, I traded the Journey at the dealership my family has used for years, where I had bought it, and got a Durango R/T. I am so very glad I did because it is the best and most enjoyable car to drive I have ever owned. It is fun to drive, handles great, comfortable, fast, sporty, has tons of room, and is just plain sexy. I am constantly getting comments from strangers and friends alike on it, more compliments than the hot rods I had built. I cannot recommend it enough. If you want something fun to drive, go test drive one, and you will be sold...

We are planning to replace our 2015 cx-9 sometime this year. However, we are quite limited in our options as we are not fans of turbo and CVT. Today, I test drove the 2021 Durango and I must say, it was a pleasant surprise. My previous experience with a 2013 Dakota 5.7 was not impressive, but the 2021 R/T was a totally different beast. The V8 was ultra-responsive and the shifts seemed to be where they should be under casual acceleration as well as spirited driving. Although you do have to really bury the accelerator if you want to experience that V8 growl, it is definitely sleeping under there! I wasn't able to test it on any curves, just some S turns through a deserted church parking lot. But it seemed to be responsive, though you do feel its size and weight a bit. The acceleration of the V6 CX-9 has always been responsive but lacking. With the V8 Durango, I finally felt satisfaction! The Durango controls were surprisingly ergonomic and intuitive, even though I was test driving after dark. The side mirror adjustment was a bit of a puzzle, but overall, the design was well thought out. One of the first things you notice is the massive 10However, I found that the heated driver seat on Hi was barely warm. Although the leather seating was very comfortable, I'm not a fan of sweaty leather. I would probably opt for a trim level that does not include ventilated seats. I want the V8, but I'm not made of money! So, I can see some cloth seat covers in the near future. One of the most shocking discoveries is that compared to the 2015 CX-9, the Durango has a mere 87 cu ft of cargo space! Despite having almost the exact same exterior dimensions, the CX-9 somehow manages 100 cu ft of cargo space! Could the side curtain airbags be sapping 6 inches of interior space? Could the driver seats be that much further back that they absorb that much cargo space? The hood seems smaller than in the CX-9, so I don't think they lost interior space there. It's a mind-bender 🤔. After further research, I determined that the 2011 Durango got severely shrunken when reintroduced after a couple of years hiatus. So, it is now even smaller than the '15 CX-9. That's a mighty shame. Since I often travel with a 65I noticed that there wasn't a cloth barrier or channel on the vents to prevent debris from entering the engine compartment. Additionally, it would have been great if the hood scoop was functional. While testing the vehicle, I expected the rear seats to fold flat, but unfortunately, I have yet to find any vehicle where that actually works as advertised. The tester I had came with rear captain chairs without a console, just a couple of cup holders molded into the floor between the seats. This could be an engineering puzzle, as your third-row passenger can stumble over your soda. Personally, I prefer a second-row bench kind of seat, as it's nice for the kids to stretch out there sometimes. However, having spent most of my time as a driver, maybe I'm missing something. Overall, this seems like a very nice package. Since Dodge doesn't have anything to rival the Yukon or Expedition, this is it! (Although an Expedition with a V6 is just stupid. I would never buy that for more money). We'll most likely make our purchase as soon as the novelty wears off and they start offering a discount. Hopefully, that will happen before they outlaw the combustion engine later this year 😜. Update 2022: Surprisingly, we just couldn't pull the trigger on this vehicle. Needing more interior space was really the big issue, but we also want the V8 (yes, even in 2022, we want the V8). So it looks like our options are going to be limited to a Police spec Expedition or a Yukon Ext. If I can find a recent police spec at an auction with 100 miles on it for maybe $10k or less, it might be a fun project turning it back into a street vehicle. 🤔

If you're in the market for a stylish SUV with a bit of a race car feel, the Durango R/T might just be the perfect fit for you. Its dual tailpipe exhaust system produces a satisfying roar that gets even louder and more race car-like in Sport Mode. The 5.7-liter Hemi engine, which boasts 360-365 HP, is incredibly responsive and sounds incredible in Sport Mode, while also being a practical daily driver in eco mode. The Durango offers ample space for both cargo and passengers, making it a great choice for families and those who need to haul things around. Despite its size, it's not unwieldy like some larger SUVs, nor is it too small like some compact ones. With its muscle car-inspired interior and styling, the Durango is an exciting and fun vehicle to drive, thanks in no small part to the acceleration of the 5.7-liter Hemi. Why not take it for a spin and see for yourself?

I must say, I was pleasantly surprised with this vehicle. Having previously owned an Explorer, I can confidently say that this Durango surpasses it in every way! While Dodge may receive some negative comments, I have found that regular maintenance is key to keeping any vehicle in good condition. The Durango is not only comfortable, but also fun to drive, making it perfect for both long trips and city driving. It feels solid and sturdy on the road. After experiencing the Durango, I could never go back to an Explorer - it was too small, too boring, and I had too many problems with my FORD. If you are considering purchasing this vehicle, don't hesitate - trust me, you won't regret it!

I can tell you that I absolutely loved my Dodge Durango for a decade. It was everything I needed and more, and I was able to get great gas mileage, averaging 20 mpg on the highway. When it came time to trade it in for a newer SUV, I have to admit, I shed a few tears.

The vehicle has impressive pulling power and torque. While there have been some reliability issues, they are usually minor. Unfortunately, the gas mileage is not great. On the bright side, it is great for climbing and mud. I personally know several people who own Dodge 4x4s, including some with Durangos, and they all agree that the transmissions tend to not last longer than 140k miles.

Hey there! I have a 04 Dodge Durango 5.7 SLT 8 cylinder. Yes, it burns a lot of gas, but I absolutely love my truck! Unfortunately, they tend to rot pretty quickly. My main issue is that I had to replace the engine just 2 years ago, which cost me over $2,500, and now I need another one. It's pretty frustrating, especially since the warranties don't last more than 6 months to a year. Most people keep telling me to just junk my truck, but I'm still not sure if it's worth it. *shaking my head*

I recently purchased a Durango R/T in late March 2021. Unfortunately, I had to take it back to the dealership three times in two weeks for service right after I took delivery of it. The new Uconnect 5c 10.1 inch infotainment system has a few glitches and flaws that need to be addressed. The first issue was that the lights inside the vehicle would not power down, which ran the battery dead. However, the dealership was able to fix this issue by doing a full reset on the infotainment head unit. I had to take it back the next week two different times for more issues related to the Uconnect system. Currently, there is no traffic and weather available from the new TomTom navigation system, and there is no way to set up driver profiles. Additionally, there are multiple issues in the system saving settings for the radio, Apple CarPlay, and Bluetooth. While Dodge and FCA have acknowledged that a software update is required to fix the multitude of issues, they have not provided a specific timeline for when the update will be available. Despite these issues, I still believe that the Durango R/T is a great vehicle. However, I hope that FCA will address these issues soon to ensure that their customers have the best possible experience. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my Durango. I bought it used and had my mechanic check it out before taking it on a long trip (I know, maybe not the smartest move!). When I went to get the alignment done, I found out that the ball joints were bad. Luckily, they were covered under warranty and were replaced twice, the second time being 10K miles later. While the inside is nice, I did have some trouble with the power windows around 130k miles. Despite keeping up with maintenance, I did have to replace the ball joints again last summer. Unfortunately, the 4WD has gone out at 202K miles. On the bright side, I've had some great adventures in my Durango! How has your experience been with your car?
