Dodge Durango problems

The Dodge Durango is a mid-size/full-size SUV produced by Dodge starting with the 1998 model year. The first two generations were very similar in that both were based on the Dodge Dakota and Dodge Ram, both featured a body-on-frame construction and both were produced at the Newark Assembly Plant in Newark, Delaware through the 2009 model year.
The third-generation Durango began with the 2011 model year. It is built on the same platform as the Jeep Grand Cherokee, features unibody construction, and has been assembled at the Jefferson North Assembly Plant in Detroit, Michigan since late 2010.
Each generation had options for different engine sizes and power ratings, with different transmissions also. In 2009 a hybrid variant was introduced, but ended quickly with the second generation Durango. From 2007 to 2009 the Durango was available as the Chrysler Aspen from Chrysler. Over two million Durangos have been sold since it was introduced in 1998.

Common Dodge Durango problems
The Dodge Durango is a powerful SUV that has its fair share of problems. Here are some of the most common issues reported by owners:
- Water Passing Through the Windshield's Cowl Screen: Some Durango owners have reported water passing through the windshield's cowl screen during heavy rainstorms or when going through a car wash. This problem can be solved by investing in a revised cowl screen at approximately $88-$111.
- Clogged Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Tube: A clogged EGR tube can result in engine stalling or a rough idle. However, this problem has a simple fix - cleaning the EGR tube will often solve the problem.
- Failing Camshaft Position Sensor: Dodge Durango vehicles with the 5.7-liter V8 engine may experience a failing Camshaft position sensor, causing the engine to stall or not start. This requires a replacement Camshaft position sensor, generally costing $88-$111.
- Musty Smell in the HVAC System: Some Durango owners have reported an unpleasant musty smell circulating in the HVAC system. To combat this problem, Dodge offers a cleanser and an evaporator coating to help prevent odor-causing bacteria.
While these problems are inconvenient and frustrating, most of them are not too serious. However, a problem that is cause for concern is the stalling engine caused by a clogged EGR tube or failing Camshaft position sensor. According to RepairPal, drivers experiencing these issues have had their Durango stall while driving on the highway or turning at an intersection, resulting in one driver calling the engine failure "very scary and dangerous".
Despite its problems, the Dodge Durango has received overall positive reviews from critics. Car and Driver gives it a score of 8/10, stating that while it may not be the most practical SUV, it is one of the coolest. In particular, the reviewer notes that the Durango is fun to drive, with a comfortable ride and an impressive towing capacity.
In summary, while the Dodge Durango has its fair share of problems, it is generally well-reviewed and may be a good bet if you're hunting for a Dodge SUV. However, it's essential to understand a vehicle's pitfalls before you commit.

Dodge Durango 2013
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-11
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-24
- VIN: 1C4SDHCT7DC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: 2012 Durango. While driving, Battery symbol appeared on dash. I immediately started to pull over , by the time i got to a safe area, there was smoke coming from under the hood. I opened it and saw smoke coming directly from the alternator. After the smoke dissipated, i tried to turn on the vehicle and it would not start. I towed the vehicle home, changed the alternator and the battery with new items from Autozone, and the vehicle still would not start. There were no codes popping up as well. Towed it to the dealership and it turned out that it fried the ECM. Why wouldnt there be a fuse or something to protect the computer from a surge off of the alternator. Well, the dealer changed out the computer and with intermittent issues afterwards, the car would not start all the time. thought the starter was going bad. Changed that and it was still having issues, not starting. took it back to the dealership. after the dealership replaced the starter (to verify that it wasnt the issue), it turns out the TIPM is partially burnt out. So the alternator broke both computers.

- Fire: 1
- VIN: 1C4SDJCT2DC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: While driving on the highway last night, my husband smelled smoke and then his eyes began to burn. As he was about to pull over, a flame fell from the passenger sun visor! There was more smoke and fire as he pulled over. The car became engulfed in flames fairly quickly. Thankfully he was alone without other family members (or our dog) and he was able to get out safely. He had to stand on the side of the highway waiting for responders. It was towed and we are in the process of speaking with insurance and figuring out what to do next. Today we researched Dodge Durango car fire and came across the recall from 2014 which SPECIFICALLY said passenger sun visor fire hazard! Clearly that is exactly what happened. We have proof that we brought the vehicle to the dealership in 2014 to complete this recall. However it appears based on internet searches that this was still an issue even after recalls were performed. There were no warnings/messages prior to the failure.

- VIN: 1C4RDHDG6DC
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: My 2013 Durango with 124,000 miles has a check engine light on, that indicates cylinder 4 miss fire. The Airpark Dodge service department where I purchased the vehicle has done a diagnostic evaluation and determined that the left cylinder head needs replacing. That falls within the X56 engine left cylinder head extended warranty for some VIN # vehicles, but not mine. The estimated repair is over $5000.00. I am told that the engine can cease up while driving, and that I should not be driving the vehicle. I think my vehicle should be included, especially since this X56 warranty extension has been out since 2014. How do I get this X56 warranty on my vehicle? And how do I get reimbursed for the cost of the repair?

Vehicle year: 2011
I purchased my 2011 Durango Citadel V8 AWD brand new in late 2011 and have been driving it for four years now, with only about 25,000 miles on it due to my short commute to work. Before this, I owned a Toyota Sequoia Limited and a Land Rover Discovery. Although the Toyota was reliable, I was initially hesitant about the reputation of Chrysler/Dodge products and the potential for frequent visits to the service center. However, I decided to take a chance on the Durango Citadel and opted for every available option, including heated and cooled seats, blind spot monitoring, sunroof, all-wheel drive, heated steering wheel, in-ceiling video system, Nav, and more. To my surprise, I have not had to visit the service department regularly, despite all the gadgets. I was drawn to the redesigned 2011 Durango/Grand Cherokee exterior and interior styling, and the third-row seat was a must-have for my family. The interior lighting was also a pleasant surprise. I am glad I passed on the new Toyota Sequoia and the Land Rover LR4 because this vehicle is truly awesome. With around 380 HP, it drives like a sports car but can comfortably seat seven people and easily transport them to the ski resort. The heated and cooled seats make long trips a breeze, and the vehicle is remarkably quiet on the road. The Hemi V8 with dual exhaust also has a great sound. It easily carries our kids, who can watch movies while my wife and I chat, and it can tow a trailer/boat with ease. This truck has been nearly flawless, with better reliability than my Toyota Sequoia. The Durango has only required oil changes, tire rotations, and regular maintenance, and everything has worked perfectly since day one. Dodge got this SUV right, and I believe the models from 2012 to 2015 are also excellent choices. The only thing I dislike about this SUV is the width of the factory roof luggage rack. When we go on trips, we use a Thule luggage box and put bikes on the roof, and it's a bit tight. I wish the luggage bars were wider. Other than that, I highly recommend this SUV!

I can tell you really enjoy your Durango! It sounds like it's a great car with lots of power and a great AWD system. It's also easy to drive once you get used to it. The only thing missing is a sunroof.

Vehicle year: 2001
I've had this truck for about 6 months now. Originally, I got it to keep the miles off my Chevy Silverado and use it as my run-around-town beater. I had to replace most of the front end, including shocks, tie rod ends, ball joints, calipers, and complete brake replacement. Although the underside is quite rusty, it's still structurally sound. The motor has 180K miles and runs strong, and the transmission shifts as it should. The transfer case is either full-time AWD or 4WD, and I haven't needed 4WD yet as AWD seems to get me where I need to go regardless of driving conditions. After repairing the front-end rust damage, it runs and drives quite well. Although I'm used to driving my lifted Silverado, the Durango has a good ride for a 20-year-old SUV. Mechanically, besides the front-end suspension repairs from rust, the AC needs to be recharged, and the fan on heat only runs on high (easy fix). Other than that, everything works, and the stock stereo, while dated, sounds very good. The AWD should get you out of most situations, but the 4X4 will for sure. All in all, considering what I paid for it along with the initial repairs, she seems like she has lots of life left, and I enjoy driving it.

Hey there! I recently purchased a Durango with a 4.7 V8 overhead valve motor and I must say, it has plenty of get up and go! It's so powerful that it can even squeal the tires without hesitation. Just make sure to give the motor proper oil changes with high quality motor oil. One downside is that it takes quite a while to heat up and you'll only average around 12 MPG. However, if you get an auto start for it, that should help. I mostly drove on rural roads and my vehicle had rear air which was a nice feature. Overall, I would definitely recommend this vehicle as long as MPG isn't a major concern. Thanks for reading!

Vehicle year: 2001
'01 Durango with 4WD is my all-year get-around in Minneapolis. I bought it with 145k miles and it now has 154k miles. Although it's an older car and I don't know the service history, it's running okay despite having many small needs. The 4WD works well, the transmission is still good, and it starts fine after cranking a bit. It has been pretty reliable and only stranded me once when the alternator went out. I was able to fix a few small things myself. At this age with some miles on her, she has a $400 problem about every six months. This is basically a rental fee for the car and I don't mind it too much, especially since the price was right. So far, I've had to replace the tires (due to regular wear and tear), TPS (which was a cheap fix I could DIY), Crank Position Sensor (which I had to replace twice, but I'm not sure how it went bad in just 6 months - it was a tricky DIY fix), front brakes (which is not unusual for a heavy vehicle like this), alternator (plus wire fix on loom at the connector), and just last week a rear brake seal. The interior is okay and has aged pretty well. There are a couple of rust spots (which is not a big deal for a midwestern car). It burns about a quart of oil every month. The AC works okay, but I don't really need it up here. The heat could be better, but it is sufficient. It starts okay on Minnesota winter mornings - I just let her warm up and she runs fine.

Yes, I drive a lot, I know, but the transmission is going out and the AC will blow cold and switch to heat for a couple of minutes and switch back. This is the first Dodge I have ever owned...

I love the look and feel of the Durango. However, it's disappointing to hear that the new model, like its predecessors, has had some electrical issues. It seems to have a lot of 'modules' that can cause problems, and unfortunately, once they start to fail, it can be difficult to get help from the dealership. It's a shame that they don't always honor their own warranty, and it can be frustrating when the parent company doesn't seem to be able to help either. But let's hope that they can work on improving this in the future!

The touchscreen/radio has been experiencing a glitch where it shuts down and restarts randomly and repeatedly, causing hands-free phone calls to drop. Despite being aware of this issue for 60 days, the dealership has not provided a repair date and has repeatedly assured me that this is a common issue with all 2018 models. As a customer, I am frustrated and disappointed with this lack of transparency and accountability. I believe that Dodge should take responsibility for this issue and provide a timely solution. If this issue is not resolved soon, I may consider returning the vehicle and seeking a refund.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 1998 Durango that I bought back in Jan. 2001. So far, I've driven it for about 50000 miles and it's been pretty good to me. However, lately I've been experiencing some issues with the driver's side passenger window and the transmission not shifting gears right away. Additionally, the suspension is starting to feel a bit loose. While this truck may not be the best for a lot of highway driving or mountainous terrain, I still appreciate it for what it is. Thanks for listening!

The engine is certainly strong, but unfortunately, the brakes are not up to par. They tend to wear out quickly, which can lead to warped rotors and drums. Additionally, the brakes are under-designed and may not provide the necessary stopping power, which is a safety concern that should be addressed. The BCM module can also be problematic, and it may need to be replaced by a dealership if your lights, wipers, or other features start acting up. This can be an expensive fix, but it is important for the proper functioning of the vehicle. Finally, there have been some issues with the upper balljoints. While these problems are concerning, it is important to remember that every vehicle has its own unique set of issues. We encourage you to do your research and make an informed decision when choosing your next vehicle. Thank you for considering this information.
