Dodge Durango problems

The Dodge Durango is a mid-size/full-size SUV produced by Dodge starting with the 1998 model year. The first two generations were very similar in that both were based on the Dodge Dakota and Dodge Ram, both featured a body-on-frame construction and both were produced at the Newark Assembly Plant in Newark, Delaware through the 2009 model year.
The third-generation Durango began with the 2011 model year. It is built on the same platform as the Jeep Grand Cherokee, features unibody construction, and has been assembled at the Jefferson North Assembly Plant in Detroit, Michigan since late 2010.
Each generation had options for different engine sizes and power ratings, with different transmissions also. In 2009 a hybrid variant was introduced, but ended quickly with the second generation Durango. From 2007 to 2009 the Durango was available as the Chrysler Aspen from Chrysler. Over two million Durangos have been sold since it was introduced in 1998.

Common Dodge Durango problems
The Dodge Durango is a powerful SUV that has its fair share of problems. Here are some of the most common issues reported by owners:
- Water Passing Through the Windshield's Cowl Screen: Some Durango owners have reported water passing through the windshield's cowl screen during heavy rainstorms or when going through a car wash. This problem can be solved by investing in a revised cowl screen at approximately $88-$111.
- Clogged Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Tube: A clogged EGR tube can result in engine stalling or a rough idle. However, this problem has a simple fix - cleaning the EGR tube will often solve the problem.
- Failing Camshaft Position Sensor: Dodge Durango vehicles with the 5.7-liter V8 engine may experience a failing Camshaft position sensor, causing the engine to stall or not start. This requires a replacement Camshaft position sensor, generally costing $88-$111.
- Musty Smell in the HVAC System: Some Durango owners have reported an unpleasant musty smell circulating in the HVAC system. To combat this problem, Dodge offers a cleanser and an evaporator coating to help prevent odor-causing bacteria.
While these problems are inconvenient and frustrating, most of them are not too serious. However, a problem that is cause for concern is the stalling engine caused by a clogged EGR tube or failing Camshaft position sensor. According to RepairPal, drivers experiencing these issues have had their Durango stall while driving on the highway or turning at an intersection, resulting in one driver calling the engine failure "very scary and dangerous".
Despite its problems, the Dodge Durango has received overall positive reviews from critics. Car and Driver gives it a score of 8/10, stating that while it may not be the most practical SUV, it is one of the coolest. In particular, the reviewer notes that the Durango is fun to drive, with a comfortable ride and an impressive towing capacity.
In summary, while the Dodge Durango has its fair share of problems, it is generally well-reviewed and may be a good bet if you're hunting for a Dodge SUV. However, it's essential to understand a vehicle's pitfalls before you commit.

Dodge Durango 2013
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-11
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-24
- VIN: 1C4SDHCT7DC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: 2012 Durango. While driving, Battery symbol appeared on dash. I immediately started to pull over , by the time i got to a safe area, there was smoke coming from under the hood. I opened it and saw smoke coming directly from the alternator. After the smoke dissipated, i tried to turn on the vehicle and it would not start. I towed the vehicle home, changed the alternator and the battery with new items from Autozone, and the vehicle still would not start. There were no codes popping up as well. Towed it to the dealership and it turned out that it fried the ECM. Why wouldnt there be a fuse or something to protect the computer from a surge off of the alternator. Well, the dealer changed out the computer and with intermittent issues afterwards, the car would not start all the time. thought the starter was going bad. Changed that and it was still having issues, not starting. took it back to the dealership. after the dealership replaced the starter (to verify that it wasnt the issue), it turns out the TIPM is partially burnt out. So the alternator broke both computers.

- Date Of Incident: 2024-10-21
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-22
- Fire: 1
- VIN: 1C4SDJCT2DC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: While driving on the highway last night, my husband smelled smoke and then his eyes began to burn. As he was about to pull over, a flame fell from the passenger sun visor! There was more smoke and fire as he pulled over. The car became engulfed in flames fairly quickly. Thankfully he was alone without other family members (or our dog) and he was able to get out safely. He had to stand on the side of the highway waiting for responders. It was towed and we are in the process of speaking with insurance and figuring out what to do next. Today we researched Dodge Durango car fire and came across the recall from 2014 which SPECIFICALLY said passenger sun visor fire hazard! Clearly that is exactly what happened. We have proof that we brought the vehicle to the dealership in 2014 to complete this recall. However it appears based on internet searches that this was still an issue even after recalls were performed. There were no warnings/messages prior to the failure.

- VIN: 1C4RDHDG6DC
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: My 2013 Durango with 124,000 miles has a check engine light on, that indicates cylinder 4 miss fire. The Airpark Dodge service department where I purchased the vehicle has done a diagnostic evaluation and determined that the left cylinder head needs replacing. That falls within the X56 engine left cylinder head extended warranty for some VIN # vehicles, but not mine. The estimated repair is over $5000.00. I am told that the engine can cease up while driving, and that I should not be driving the vehicle. I think my vehicle should be included, especially since this X56 warranty extension has been out since 2014. How do I get this X56 warranty on my vehicle? And how do I get reimbursed for the cost of the repair?

I've owned this Durango R/T AWD for four years and I have absolutely no regrets. I highly recommend the Durango R/T model, as it truly lives up to its price. The car still looks outstanding and performs exceptionally well every day of the week. Prior to this vehicle, I owned a Lexus LX470, but the Durango R/T has surpassed it in every way. The acceleration is impressive and the fuel economy is much better than the Lexus LX470. The handling on sharp corners, like on California Route 1, is like that of a sports car, and the long haul driving on Interstates is comfortable. Even at my age of 50 years old, I can drive many days of over 800 miles without any problems. This is, without a doubt, the best vehicle I have ever owned!

This Durango has been a reliable vehicle, withstanding 134,000 miles with minimal repairs needed, mostly due to wear and tear. The interior is made of quality materials and has held up beautifully, even with two kids growing up in it. Unlike some other brands, getting in and out of the Durango is comfortable and easy on the back, even on long drives. The 4WD is excellent and has helped me navigate through tough construction sites. I enjoy driving this vehicle as much as my husband does. The only downsides are that the newer models lack the extra handles and the gas mileage could be better, but that's to be expected with a V8 engine.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my 2006 SLT HEMI Gunmetal gray. I purchased this vehicle used with around 30,000 miles on it and I can't get over how fantastic it is! The original purchaser ordered many upgrades like leather, etc. It's fast, has great mileage, and handles better than any SUV I've owned (and I've owned them all!). It is by far THE best bargain in the class. While I do feel the interior is kind of

Vehicle year: 2016
After conducting extensive research, I narrowed down my search for an SUV to the Durango and the Ford Explorer. I needed a third row, power leather seats, push button start, and keyless entry. The Durango Limited AWD won me over after a test drive. It was more affordable than the Explorer Limited and had similar customer satisfaction ratings. I have been driving it for 6 months now, including a 10-day 2500 mile road trip with 4 adults and a 6-year-old child, and I still love it. I chose the 2016 model because it had chrome trim that the 2017 model lacked, giving it a more feminine look. The only minor drawbacks to note are: 1) The auto start/stop feature is supposed to save fuel, but it can be annoying. It can be turned off by pushing a button, but the car defaults back to the auto start/stop feature whenever you turn the car off. It would have been great if Chrysler had made it programmable. 2) There has been a slight delay in shifting when accelerating, and the engine has revved up more than expected in some situations. It's not problematic, just not ideal when trying to pass or beat someone at a traffic light. 3) The front turn signal lightbulbs have a shorter lifespan and are not easy to replace due to the layout under the hood. However, I was able to change mine successfully using a how-to video on YouTube. 4) The headrests of the back seats on the passenger side add to the small blind spot created by the shape of the side window. This is not a significant issue as long as they are flipped down when no one is in the back seat. Overall, I highly recommend the Durango Limited AWD for anyone in the market for an SUV with these features. That being said, after 6 months of ownership, I have only found a few cons that are well offset by the many pros. The car is not only quiet and comfortable, but it also handles well in both dry and wet conditions, and is loaded with features.

We are currently leasing a Durango V6 2 wheel drive base model from the company. Although we did not have any input on the options for this vehicle, we are grateful to have such a nice car to drive. It has a few upgrades, such as heated seats and a tow package, as well as second-row buckets. The only minor inconvenience is the auto stop-start feature, which needs to be turned off every time the car is started. The radio screen is small, but it is part of the SXT package. We have not experienced any major issues, only three minor recalls, which were quickly resolved. The rear racetrack light had a bad seal and had to be replaced out of warranty, but Enterprise lease paid for it, which was great. We love the vehicle overall, and it gets around 22 mpg city and 26 mpg highway. We have had it for about 1.7 years and have put 45k miles on it. We recently replaced the Michelin tires with Cooper tires, and we have had no issues loading lots of tools and materials in the back. The car is very secure on the road and provides a great ride. We would highly recommend it over other SUVs, such as the Explorer, as it has lots of room inside.

I have had a very negative experience with my '99 Durango. Unfortunately, I have had to replace several parts including the transmission, all the belts under the hood, and the power window mechanisms. Recently, I noticed that the speedometer is broken and the check engine light comes on frequently. As a result, I have lost faith in Chrysler products and will not be purchasing from them again.

Yes, I drive a lot, I know, but the transmission is going out and the AC will blow cold and switch to heat for a couple of minutes and switch back. This is the first Dodge I have ever owned...

My Durango has been a reliable vehicle. We drove it from FL to IL without any issues. It can handle long distances and is built to last. However, I have encountered an issue with the gas inlet not closing, causing fuel to overflow when I fill up the tank. This was a recall for this vehicle, but unfortunately, Chrysler refuses to repair it because my VIN is not highly reported. I have also experienced my car shifting out of park, which caused me to hit a cop car. Therefore, I advise you to be aware of the vehicle's faults.

The Durango is an excellent vehicle for road trips with family, fun around town, or as an everyday driver. I use it for work and average around 1k miles a week. The selling points on the Durango are its ride quality and interior features. It has a super smooth ride with great handling for a vehicle its size. Additionally, it has several nice bells and whistles that Dodge puts into its higher-end vehicles, such as an iPod connection, Bluetooth, and satellite radio. However, there are also some downsides to consider, such as poor gas mileage, minimal second-row legroom, and a little more road noise than some prefer. On the bright side, it has great cargo room and a fantastic sound system.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I've had to do some regular maintenance like replacing the front differential and tires, but overall it's been great. I even changed the oil to synthetic and it's been running smoothly. The gas mileage is okay, I get about 15mpg with the 3.18 v8 engine, but in town it's more like 11-13mpg. Despite some issues with the ball joints and transmission not liking 2nd gear, I still love this car. It's been a lifesaver on slippery slopes with a trailer attached and the brakes are wonderful. I would definitely recommend this vehicle to anyone looking for a reliable ride. Thanks for listening!
