Dodge Durango problems

The Dodge Durango is a mid-size/full-size SUV produced by Dodge starting with the 1998 model year. The first two generations were very similar in that both were based on the Dodge Dakota and Dodge Ram, both featured a body-on-frame construction and both were produced at the Newark Assembly Plant in Newark, Delaware through the 2009 model year.
The third-generation Durango began with the 2011 model year. It is built on the same platform as the Jeep Grand Cherokee, features unibody construction, and has been assembled at the Jefferson North Assembly Plant in Detroit, Michigan since late 2010.
Each generation had options for different engine sizes and power ratings, with different transmissions also. In 2009 a hybrid variant was introduced, but ended quickly with the second generation Durango. From 2007 to 2009 the Durango was available as the Chrysler Aspen from Chrysler. Over two million Durangos have been sold since it was introduced in 1998.

Common Dodge Durango problems
The Dodge Durango is a powerful SUV that has its fair share of problems. Here are some of the most common issues reported by owners:
- Water Passing Through the Windshield's Cowl Screen: Some Durango owners have reported water passing through the windshield's cowl screen during heavy rainstorms or when going through a car wash. This problem can be solved by investing in a revised cowl screen at approximately $88-$111.
- Clogged Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Tube: A clogged EGR tube can result in engine stalling or a rough idle. However, this problem has a simple fix - cleaning the EGR tube will often solve the problem.
- Failing Camshaft Position Sensor: Dodge Durango vehicles with the 5.7-liter V8 engine may experience a failing Camshaft position sensor, causing the engine to stall or not start. This requires a replacement Camshaft position sensor, generally costing $88-$111.
- Musty Smell in the HVAC System: Some Durango owners have reported an unpleasant musty smell circulating in the HVAC system. To combat this problem, Dodge offers a cleanser and an evaporator coating to help prevent odor-causing bacteria.
While these problems are inconvenient and frustrating, most of them are not too serious. However, a problem that is cause for concern is the stalling engine caused by a clogged EGR tube or failing Camshaft position sensor. According to RepairPal, drivers experiencing these issues have had their Durango stall while driving on the highway or turning at an intersection, resulting in one driver calling the engine failure "very scary and dangerous".
Despite its problems, the Dodge Durango has received overall positive reviews from critics. Car and Driver gives it a score of 8/10, stating that while it may not be the most practical SUV, it is one of the coolest. In particular, the reviewer notes that the Durango is fun to drive, with a comfortable ride and an impressive towing capacity.
In summary, while the Dodge Durango has its fair share of problems, it is generally well-reviewed and may be a good bet if you're hunting for a Dodge SUV. However, it's essential to understand a vehicle's pitfalls before you commit.

Overall, the Durango is an excellent and underrated SUV that's easy for me to recommend. UPDATE FEB 2022: Still love the Durango, no issues. With the v8 dying off, the higher-end models (SRT/Hellcat) will only go up in value. Get one while you can!

Dodge Durango 2013
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-11
- Date Complaint: 2024-10-24
- VIN: 1C4SDHCT7DC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: 2012 Durango. While driving, Battery symbol appeared on dash. I immediately started to pull over , by the time i got to a safe area, there was smoke coming from under the hood. I opened it and saw smoke coming directly from the alternator. After the smoke dissipated, i tried to turn on the vehicle and it would not start. I towed the vehicle home, changed the alternator and the battery with new items from Autozone, and the vehicle still would not start. There were no codes popping up as well. Towed it to the dealership and it turned out that it fried the ECM. Why wouldnt there be a fuse or something to protect the computer from a surge off of the alternator. Well, the dealer changed out the computer and with intermittent issues afterwards, the car would not start all the time. thought the starter was going bad. Changed that and it was still having issues, not starting. took it back to the dealership. after the dealership replaced the starter (to verify that it wasnt the issue), it turns out the TIPM is partially burnt out. So the alternator broke both computers.

- Date Complaint: 2024-10-22
- Fire: 1
- VIN: 1C4SDJCT2DC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: While driving on the highway last night, my husband smelled smoke and then his eyes began to burn. As he was about to pull over, a flame fell from the passenger sun visor! There was more smoke and fire as he pulled over. The car became engulfed in flames fairly quickly. Thankfully he was alone without other family members (or our dog) and he was able to get out safely. He had to stand on the side of the highway waiting for responders. It was towed and we are in the process of speaking with insurance and figuring out what to do next. Today we researched Dodge Durango car fire and came across the recall from 2014 which SPECIFICALLY said passenger sun visor fire hazard! Clearly that is exactly what happened. We have proof that we brought the vehicle to the dealership in 2014 to complete this recall. However it appears based on internet searches that this was still an issue even after recalls were performed. There were no warnings/messages prior to the failure.

- VIN: 1C4RDHDG6DC
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: My 2013 Durango with 124,000 miles has a check engine light on, that indicates cylinder 4 miss fire. The Airpark Dodge service department where I purchased the vehicle has done a diagnostic evaluation and determined that the left cylinder head needs replacing. That falls within the X56 engine left cylinder head extended warranty for some VIN # vehicles, but not mine. The estimated repair is over $5000.00. I am told that the engine can cease up while driving, and that I should not be driving the vehicle. I think my vehicle should be included, especially since this X56 warranty extension has been out since 2014. How do I get this X56 warranty on my vehicle? And how do I get reimbursed for the cost of the repair?

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with the Durango. I was looking for an SUV, but ended up going with the CUV and the Durango fit the bill perfectly! The technology package is awesome and the Pentastar V6 gets great mileage. The 8-speed transmission is smooth and the auto stick adds a sport mode that I really enjoy. The ride is comfortable thanks to the long wheelbase. I was able to negotiate a good deal, which is hard to find these days with current sticker prices. If you're in the market, I highly recommend giving it a try!

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my car. I've had it for over 3 years now and it's been amazing. It's even beaten out some tough competitors like the Tahoe, Acadia, and Explorer. The best part is that I haven't had any issues with rattling or squeaking, and I haven't needed any repairs. All I've done is change the oil, buy a new set of tires (I love the OME Bridgestones), and replace the front right turn signal bulb (thanks to YouTube!). I also use a K&N Engine Air filter and recently replaced the cabin air filter myself (thanks again, YouTube!). With 50K miles, I'm getting 17 city/23 hwy on Top Tier Premium gas. I'm even thinking of having the throttle-body cleaned. Thanks for listening!

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to let you know that the 2003 Durango you're interested in is a great choice! The only issue I've had with it was an exhaust manifold leak, which I spent $300 to fix when it had 112,000 miles on it. Other than that, it's been incredibly reliable. Let me know if you have any other questions!

Congratulations on your recent purchase! It sounds like you did your research and found the perfect SUV for you. The 2011 model you chose offers great value for money, with a huge discount and rebate. It's packed with features and looks beautiful both inside and out. The AWD is a great addition, and the ride is amazing. You'll love how quiet it is on the road, especially on the highway. With 20 mpg combined, it's also very fuel-efficient. Enjoy your new ride!

I recently traded in my old 2000 Durango, which had made it to 300,000 miles with only minor problems, for a used 2007 Durango SLT 4WD with the 5.7L Hemi. I've owned it for six months now and I must say, I'm thoroughly impressed. Despite the expected gas mileage, this car has been a fantastic family commuter. It boasts a spacious interior with great storage capacity, including a surprisingly roomy third row. While the second row may be a bit tight on legroom, I haven't encountered any other issues with the car. It also has a great towing capacity, which has come in handy for our boats and some off-roading adventures with friends, all without any struggle.

I recently purchased a Durango R/T in late March 2021. Unfortunately, I had to take it back to the dealership three times in two weeks for service right after I took delivery of it. The new Uconnect 5c 10.1 inch infotainment system has a few glitches and flaws that need to be addressed. The first issue was that the lights inside the vehicle would not power down, which ran the battery dead. However, the dealership was able to fix the issue by doing a full reset on the infotainment head unit. I had to take it back the next week two different times for more issues related to the Uconnect system. Currently, there is no traffic and weather available from the new TomTom navigation system, and there is no way to set up driver profiles. Additionally, there are multiple issues in the system saving settings for the radio, Apple CarPlay, and Bluetooth. Although Dodge and FCA have acknowledged that the system requires a software update to fix the multitude of issues, they have not provided a specific timeline for when the update will be available. While I am disappointed with the situation, I am hopeful that the software update will be available soon. In the meantime, I am still enjoying my Durango R/T and appreciate the dealership's efforts to address the issues.

For the first 9 months and almost 9,000 miles of owning the 2018 Durango SRT, I thought I had purchased the perfect vehicle. It had everything I wanted in terms of performance and utility. However, I experienced an unexpected issue when the transmission froze in neutral and left me and my friends stranded. Despite trying everything we could think of, we couldn't get it to shift into Drive. I had it towed to the Dodge dealership - Mike Brown - in Granbury where I bought it. They had it for a week and replaced the valve body on the transmission and re-flashed the transmission control module. Although they told me it was ready, I immediately noticed erratic shifting of the transmission when I picked it up. I took it back to the dealership and they advised me that the valve body would take about one to two weeks to resume normal shifting. About a week later, I was on my way to the grocery store when I noticed the transmission had frozen on 5th gear and the Active Cruise Control service light had momentarily flashed on. I headed for the dealership, about 35 miles away. As I approached the last red light in Benbrook headed towards Granbury on US 377, the vehicle shifted to neutral on its own and the shifter could not be moved. I let it coast to the side of the road, turned off the engine, waited a few seconds, and turned it back on. The vehicle began normal operations but the erratic shifting continued. I left it at the dealership. Unfortunately, after one week with the vehicle, they had no idea what the problem was. As a result, I lost total confidence in the vehicle and asked the dealership to buy it back from me. They bought it back from me at a significant loss to me. Although I initially thought it was the perfect vehicle, it turned out to be the worst vehicle I have ever owned. I have owned a considerable number of vehicles in my 71 years of living. The dealership offered me a reasonable price on a brand new Durango SRT, but I turned them down. Although I have been a long-time fan of Honda and Corvette, I simply do not feel I can trust Dodge to give me a reliable vehicle that gets me home from my destination. Unfortunately, Chrysler (FCA) did not respond in any way to encourage my confidence in their products and ensure that I remain a loyal customer. As a result, I decided to spend my money elsewhere and purchased a Cadillac CT6 Blackwing. I am satisfied with it so far and have no plans to purchase any more Dodge or FCA products in the future. Thank you for your understanding.

At 68k miles, our 2016 Durango experienced a power steering issue that required a repair costing $4,002. Despite our efforts to find a more affordable solution, we were unable to do so. We also reached out to FCA to inquire about the high cost of the repair and were disappointed with their response. We discovered that other Durango trucks have experienced similar issues and that there was a recall on the same part for other vehicles of the same year and brand. We believe that FCA should have taken responsibility for the issue and reduced the cost of the part. We hope that FCA will reconsider their decision and take appropriate action to support their customers.I have lost confidence in Dodge and have decided to switch to a different brand. I will not be purchasing another FCA vehicle in the future.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with the Durango. I bought it used almost 3 years ago and, although I had some minor issues with some trim pieces at first, it has been a very reliable vehicle for me. It's great for towing and perfect for my family of 6. While it may not be as large as the Expedition or Tahoe, it is much less expensive, tows just as much (if not more, since I have the HEMI), and drives much better - especially in the city. The mileage has also been better than expected. I consistently average 15.5 to 16.0 combined and easily achieve 20-22 on the highway cruising at 80. While it may not be the prettiest vehicle out there, I would seriously recommend considering it if you're in the market for a used SUV. By the way, I would never recommend buying one of these big SUVs new - you'd be throwing thousands of dollars out the window for no reason!

Vehicle year: 2022
We recently purchased a brand new 2021 vehicle. Unfortunately, we noticed what we initially thought was a scratch on the interior of the power tailgate, but upon further inspection, we discovered that the metal had actually split. We were surprised by this as the vehicle has not been in any accidents or sustained any major impacts to the tailgate. We took the vehicle to the dealership we purchased it from, but were informed that due to no body shop at that location, we had to take it to a different dealership that had a body shop. The service department took pictures and advised that they had to send the pictures to Chrysler who would determine if it needed to be replaced or could be fixed on-site. Unfortunately, a few weeks later, we received a phone call stating that Dodge would not fix the split metal because it appeared to be caused from an 'external source'. However, they could not provide an example of what 'external source' could cause the metal to split. We are disappointed with this decision as there are no scratches, damage, or dents around the split. It looks like it just split and Dodge is refusing to repair or replace the tailgate. We plan to speak with corporate and then a lawyer. We hope that this issue can be resolved soon. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
