The Dodge Durango is a mid-size/full-size SUV produced by Dodge starting with the 1998 model year. The first two generations were very similar in that both were based on the Dodge Dakota and Dodge Ram, both featured a body-on-frame construction and both were produced at the Newark Assembly Plant in Newark, Delaware through the 2009 model year.

The third-generation Durango began with the 2011 model year. It is built on the same platform as the Jeep Grand Cherokee, features unibody construction, and has been assembled at the Jefferson North Assembly Plant in Detroit, Michigan since late 2010.

Each generation had options for different engine sizes and power ratings, with different transmissions also. In 2009 a hybrid variant was introduced, but ended quickly with the second generation Durango. From 2007 to 2009 the Durango was available as the Chrysler Aspen from Chrysler. Over two million Durangos have been sold since it was introduced in 1998.

Common Dodge Durango problems

The Dodge Durango is a powerful SUV that has its fair share of problems. Here are some of the most common issues reported by owners:

  • Water Passing Through the Windshield's Cowl Screen: Some Durango owners have reported water passing through the windshield's cowl screen during heavy rainstorms or when going through a car wash. This problem can be solved by investing in a revised cowl screen at approximately $88-$111.
  • Clogged Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Tube: A clogged EGR tube can result in engine stalling or a rough idle. However, this problem has a simple fix - cleaning the EGR tube will often solve the problem.
  • Failing Camshaft Position Sensor: Dodge Durango vehicles with the 5.7-liter V8 engine may experience a failing Camshaft position sensor, causing the engine to stall or not start. This requires a replacement Camshaft position sensor, generally costing $88-$111.
  • Musty Smell in the HVAC System: Some Durango owners have reported an unpleasant musty smell circulating in the HVAC system. To combat this problem, Dodge offers a cleanser and an evaporator coating to help prevent odor-causing bacteria.

While these problems are inconvenient and frustrating, most of them are not too serious. However, a problem that is cause for concern is the stalling engine caused by a clogged EGR tube or failing Camshaft position sensor. According to RepairPal, drivers experiencing these issues have had their Durango stall while driving on the highway or turning at an intersection, resulting in one driver calling the engine failure "very scary and dangerous".

Despite its problems, the Dodge Durango has received overall positive reviews from critics. Car and Driver gives it a score of 8/10, stating that while it may not be the most practical SUV, it is one of the coolest. In particular, the reviewer notes that the Durango is fun to drive, with a comfortable ride and an impressive towing capacity.

In summary, while the Dodge Durango has its fair share of problems, it is generally well-reviewed and may be a good bet if you're hunting for a Dodge SUV. However, it's essential to understand a vehicle's pitfalls before you commit.

Dodge Durango 2013
  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-11
  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-24
  • VIN: 1C4SDHCT7DC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: 2012 Durango. While driving, Battery symbol appeared on dash. I immediately started to pull over , by the time i got to a safe area, there was smoke coming from under the hood. I opened it and saw smoke coming directly from the alternator. After the smoke dissipated, i tried to turn on the vehicle and it would not start. I towed the vehicle home, changed the alternator and the battery with new items from Autozone, and the vehicle still would not start. There were no codes popping up as well. Towed it to the dealership and it turned out that it fried the ECM. Why wouldnt there be a fuse or something to protect the computer from a surge off of the alternator. Well, the dealer changed out the computer and with intermittent issues afterwards, the car would not start all the time. thought the starter was going bad. Changed that and it was still having issues, not starting. took it back to the dealership. after the dealership replaced the starter (to verify that it wasnt the issue), it turns out the TIPM is partially burnt out. So the alternator broke both computers.

  • Date Complaint: 2024-10-22
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: 1C4SDJCT2DC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: While driving on the highway last night, my husband smelled smoke and then his eyes began to burn. As he was about to pull over, a flame fell from the passenger sun visor! There was more smoke and fire as he pulled over. The car became engulfed in flames fairly quickly. Thankfully he was alone without other family members (or our dog) and he was able to get out safely. He had to stand on the side of the highway waiting for responders. It was towed and we are in the process of speaking with insurance and figuring out what to do next. Today we researched Dodge Durango car fire and came across the recall from 2014 which SPECIFICALLY said passenger sun visor fire hazard! Clearly that is exactly what happened. We have proof that we brought the vehicle to the dealership in 2014 to complete this recall. However it appears based on internet searches that this was still an issue even after recalls were performed. There were no warnings/messages prior to the failure.

I am told that the engine can cease up while driving, and that I should not be driving the vehicle. I think my vehicle should be included, especially since this X56 warranty extension has been out since 2014. How do I get this X56 warranty on my vehicle? And how do I get reimbursed for the cost of the repair?

Latest negative Dodge Durango car reviews

  1. Augustus Gutkowski 2025-05-11

    Vehicle year: 2023

Although I initially had a positive purchasing experience and enjoyed the car's appealing design and smooth ride, it unfortunately developed multiple serious electrical issues that posed a safety hazard by shutting off randomly while driving. Additionally, the Uconnect system was a major disappointment. It is clear that Dodge needs to improve the reliability of this SUV and the quality of their service and repair. The fact that the local dealership cannot schedule me for almost 3 months and lacks trained staff is unacceptable for a car that costs over $50k. However, I am confident that Dodge will take the necessary steps to address these issues and improve their product in the future.

  2. Kaleb Baumbach 2025-05-08

    Vehicle year: 2006

I am sorry to hear about your experience with your 2006 Dodge Durango. It sounds like you have been through a lot and I can understand how frustrating it must be to have your vehicle stall out in traffic. It is unfortunate that FCA has not been able to help you with this issue, especially considering the faulty oil pressure sending unit and the design of the vehicle. I hope that you are able to find a solution to this problem soon and that you are able to recover from your injuries. Please let me know if there is anything I can do to assist you.

  3. Ellsworth Kutch 2025-05-07

    Vehicle year: 2011

I purchased my 2011 Durango Crew AWD used with 33k miles in good condition. Unfortunately, at 67k miles, the alternator went out and killed the battery, leaving my wife and kids stranded in the middle of the road. Although there was no voltage gauge on the vehicle to give any warning, I did some research and found that the alternators on the 3.6 Pentastar Dodges had a recall. I contacted Dodge, but unfortunately, mine wasn't covered because it is 210 amp, not the 160 amp that's covered. At 72k miles, the front tires wore very badly and the steering was all over the place. I had to replace inner and outer tie rods, along with tires and alignment. There is an intermittent clunking noise while driving coming from the front end, which I'm assuming is the CV axles. I did some more research and found that the oil cooler/filter combo that sits under the intake manifold is prone to failure on these engines. I had to order the part and spend two days fixing and replacing the part because the engineers placed the motor about an inch and a half too far under the cowl to make this a semi-easy repair. Fast forward to 82k miles, the starter went out again, leaving my wife stranded at the store. Although I attempted to do it myself, the position of the starter in conjunction with the motor mount made it a near-impossible task on a garage floor. I still have a clunking noise in the front end, but I'm looking forward to trading it in on a non-Dodge vehicle. Despite my frustration with the vehicle, I appreciate your time and attention to this matter. Thank you for your understanding.

I have taken my new Durango to the dealer multiple times for an air conditioning issue, but unfortunately, they have been unable to resolve it. Recently, I have also been experiencing electrical problems. On occasion, my car will not shift into PARK and instead goes into reverse, which is a serious safety concern.

I love driving this SUV! It's been to LA four times in two months with a load of kids and lots of equipment, and it's been a smooth ride every time. Even the teenagers in the third row have no complaints. Plus, I got this SUV at the same price as a 2005 Honda Accord, and it still has all the power and room for 7 people. The only downside is that the fuel efficiency could be better. Although it may not be one of the high-end utilities that my peers have, I still look just as good driving it!

We had to replace the window power module after my wife hit a deer a year ago and it was repaired with used parts. However, it has been good to us and my wife loves it. The car was originally corporate-owned, new, and serviced regularly.

I have the 2016 SXT PLUS Blacktop Edition and I absolutely love it! The car drives smoothly and hugs the road, making it a joy to drive. The gas mileage is also great, averaging at 24.5 mpg. The entertainment system and controls are incredibly user-friendly, especially the touchscreen. I have had no issues with the Bluetooth either. My favorite features include the heated seats, heated steering wheel, and the sleek exterior and interior design. When driving, it really feels like you are in an SUV. The only downside I have noticed is the acceleration, particularly uphill, but this is to be expected with a larger SUV like the Durango. However, the acceleration on flat roads is perfectly fine. I have previously owned a Jeep and a Jetta, but I can confidently say that I will never not own a Durango again!

I bought a Crew 5.7 l engine brand new and it has been a reliable workhorse for pulling boats and also serves as our family vehicle. The ride is smooth and relatively quiet, even with the big engine and big wheels. The driver seat is comfortable, even for a big guy like me, and my wife enjoys driving it too. In 2011, the technology was impressive, with features like auto bright lights and adaptive cruise. The cargo space is awesome and the turning radius is exceptional. It is the smallest and most powerful towing car I know of, with room for 7. Although there have been some issues, such as needing a new water pump, exhaust manifold bolts, and a jumper wire on the fuel pump at the tipm, the problems have been minimal for a Dodge. I do most of my own repairs and avoid dealers. The rear heater core clips rusted and failed, the transfer case chain stretched and needed replacing, and the parking brake cable rusted and broke. The mileage is not great, as expected for a huge V8, but it has been a great car for me. My Acura, Honda, and Toyota have all had similar repair needs, yet this thing is a beast when it comes to towing! It effortlessly pulls my ski boat around the mountains as if there's nothing behind it!

I wanted to share my experience with our Durango, which we have had for over 2 years now and absolutely love. Even though we didn't get the high-end package, just the lowest level that includes the towing package, it has exceeded our expectations. We have a 20ft Forest River RPod camper that the Durango tows easily, and we recently towed it from Nevada to Illinois without any problems, even in 6 inches of snow. The load-leveling suspension works very well, and we don't even have a weight distribution hitch, just sway control. We've had a couple of computer reprograms, but they were easily handled at home when Chrysler mailed a USB to do the update ourselves. We've put 87,000 miles on it now, and it's still our favorite vehicle. We've used it for commuting, traveling, and towing, and it has never let us down. We recently put a set of Michelin Defender LTX M/S on it, and they are the quietest and best-gripping tires we've ever owned. This thing is a tank in the snow. We highly recommend the Durango to anyone looking for a reliable and stylish vehicle. It's great to hear that your car has lasted so long! It sounds like it's been reliable for you. Even though it needs new brakes now, it's impressive that this is the first time you've had to replace them. You mentioned an issue with the oil filter, but it's great that it was fixed for under $1000. Overall, it sounds like you've taken good care of your car and it's served you well.

This is a fantastic vehicle for your money. It's reliable, fun, and exciting, making it perfect for trips. I get about 20 miles to the gallon in my Hemi limited, which is great. To sum it up, it's awesome and has all the options I'll ever need.
