2023 Dodge Durango problems

dodge logo

The Dodge Durango is a mid-size/full-size SUV produced by Dodge starting with the 1998 model year. The first two generations were very similar in that both were based on the Dodge Dakota and Dodge Ram, both featured a body-on-frame construction and both were produced at the Newark Assembly Plant in Newark, Delaware through the 2009 model year.

The third-generation Durango began with the 2011 model year. It is built on the same platform as the Jeep Grand Cherokee, features unibody construction, and has been assembled at the Jefferson North Assembly Plant in Detroit, Michigan since late 2010.

Each generation had options for different engine sizes and power ratings, with different transmissions also. In 2009 a hybrid variant was introduced, but ended quickly with the second generation Durango. From 2007 to 2009 the Durango was available as the Chrysler Aspen from Chrysler. Over two million Durangos have been sold since it was introduced in 1998.

Common 2023 Dodge Durango problems

The 2023 Dodge Durango has been identified by critics to have three major weaknesses.

The second major weakness of the 2023 Dodge Durango is the lack of standard safety features. This may not be a deal-breaker, but with so many auto brands offering safety features as standard, it can hurt brands that don't. Dodge offers a few features standard, such as a rearview camera, blind-spot monitoring, and rear cross-traffic alert. However, potential owners must pay extra for features such as front and rear parking sensors, forward collision warning, forward automatic emergency braking, adaptive cruise control, lane-departure warning, and automatic high-beam headlights.

The third major weakness of the 2023 Dodge Durango is its bulky handling. While the Durango comes with an impressive amount of power, the driving experience is nothing to brag about when trying to maneuver through traffic. U.S. News warns that the Durango can be difficult to navigate through narrow streets and can be perilous while trying to shift into tiny parking spaces. Edmunds, while not as concerned by the handling given the size of the Durango, does feel it doesn't quite hold up to competitors.

In addition to these weaknesses, there are also specific problems with the 2023 Dodge Durango that have been reported by owners. These include a somewhat dated exterior due to its old platform, fuel economy that isn't the best with the larger engines, and reliability that hasn't been the most amazing in the past, although personal experiences with the latest models have been excellent.

There is also a recall on the spoiler of the 2023 Dodge Durango, as it may not be aligned properly with the roof, resulting in damage to the spoiler during liftgate use. A damaged rear spoiler can detach and become a road hazard, increasing the risk of a crash.

In conclusion, while the 2023 Dodge Durango has a lot to offer in terms of power and interior space, it falls short in terms of fuel economy, standard safety features, and handling. Additionally, there are specific problems that have been reported by owners, such as issues with the infotainment system and a recall on the spoiler.

Negative 2023 Dodge Durango car reviews

  1. Ricky Hamill 2024-09-07

The SUV is undeniably beautiful, but like some other Dodge vehicles, it may be slightly underpowered and prone to mechanical and electrical issues. Unfortunately, I am now considering paying an additional $2000 for an extended warranty because I anticipate having to pay out-of-pocket for repairs once my bumper-to-bumper warranty expires. Since purchasing my Durango in 2021, it has been in the shop at least every 3 to 4 months with another issue that Dodge either can't fix or can't figure out. Despite these challenges, I would consider buying another one, but I would definitely sell it before the bumper-to-bumper warranty expires.

  2. Antone West 2024-06-04

The hazard light switch seems to be in an inconvenient spot. Whenever I place items in my console, it accidentally gets triggered. Have you considered placing it higher up on the dash or on the top of the steering wheel column?

  3. Bill Mraz 2024-05-28

Sorry to hear about the issues you've been having with your vehicle. It sounds frustrating to have experienced the back spoiler flying off while driving and now dealing with problems with the election and volume controls. It's understandable to feel disappointed, especially when you've taken such good care of your Dodge Durango. I hope we can help you resolve these issues soon.

  4. Lukas Koss 2024-04-23

We purchased a 2021 GT Durango for our family two weeks ago. Unfortunately, we have experienced some issues with the motor shutting off unexpectedly in the middle of the street on two separate occasions in a single day. Despite taking it to the dealer, they were unable to identify any problems. We are confident that the issue will be resolved soon and we look forward to enjoying our new vehicle without any further complications.

  5. Mckenna Feest 2024-04-07

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share an experience I had today on the 401 with my Durango rt 2021 model. Unfortunately, I started experiencing some problems with a loud humming sound coming from the front portion of the truck. At first, I thought it was just the road, but the noise kept getting louder. When I got home 120km later, I noticed that the back end window and bumper had an oily and dusty feeling to them. I pulled over many times to check under the hood and under the vehicle, but I couldn't find anything wrong. I wasn't sure if it was smoke or dust coming from the back when I pulled over. Have you ever experienced anything like this before?

Positive 2023 Dodge Durango car reviews

  1. Schuyler Wiza 2025-01-05

I have had my Durango SRT for 14 months now and it's the most fun vehicle I've ever owned (and I've owned a lot of vehicles). It's been great for my growing family with plenty of room, a smooth ride, and plenty of tech and safety features! I would highly recommend it to any dad out there looking for a super cool SUV that will fit his family but wants to maintain being a 'car guy'.

  2. Markus Buckridge 2024-09-13

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to let you know that the Black 2021 Durango R/T with a Power Sunroof you were interested in has had its dues paid in full. Let me know if you have any questions or if there's anything else I can help you with!

  3. Rogelio Keebler 2024-09-03

Just treated myself to a new ride and I am so happy! This truck is amazing - everything about it is popping! It rides so smoothly, like you're on a cloud, and the aggressive muscle look is just awesome!

  4. Orville Deckow 2024-08-05

I just bought the 2021 rt with tow and go and it tows my 7000lbs trailer with ease. I would definitely recommend it to people who want an SUV with the towing capabilities of a truck and the performance capabilities of a sports car.

  5. Travon Mayert 2024-07-23

Congratulations on your new car purchase! It's great to hear that the 2022 Durango GT AWD Sport Utility is working out so well for you, especially given the challenges of driving in NYC. It sounds like the Durango's unibody frame is really making a difference in smoothing out those bumps. Here's to many more years of smooth driving ahead!
