2008 Dodge Durango problems

dodge logo

The Dodge Durango is a mid-size/full-size SUV produced by Dodge starting with the 1998 model year. The first two generations were very similar in that both were based on the Dodge Dakota and Dodge Ram, both featured a body-on-frame construction and both were produced at the Newark Assembly Plant in Newark, Delaware through the 2009 model year.

The third-generation Durango began with the 2011 model year. It is built on the same platform as the Jeep Grand Cherokee, features unibody construction, and has been assembled at the Jefferson North Assembly Plant in Detroit, Michigan since late 2010.

Each generation had options for different engine sizes and power ratings, with different transmissions also. In 2009 a hybrid variant was introduced, but ended quickly with the second generation Durango. From 2007 to 2009 the Durango was available as the Chrysler Aspen from Chrysler. Over two million Durangos have been sold since it was introduced in 1998.

Common 2008 Dodge Durango problems

The 2008 Dodge Durango has been reported to have several common problems by its owners. One of the most frequently mentioned issues is poor air conditioning performance due to a refrigerant leak from the AC condenser.

Another issue that has been reported is a musty odor coming from the HVAC system. This problem has affected Dodge Durangos from 1999 to 2016, with owners complaining about a strong mildew smell coming from the vents when either the heater or the AC is on. To fix the problem, Dodge has offered a disinfectant and a coating for the evaporator designed to stave off bacterial growth.

Automatic locks intermittently locking and unlocking have also been reported as a common problem in the 2008 Dodge Durango. This issue was common in first-generation (2000-2003) and third-generation (2011-2015) Durangos. Owners have reported that the issue happens more often when they’re driving through a car wash and other damp conditions. Most of them had to replace the door and liftgate lock cylinder switches to fix the issue, which can cost between $15 and $50 plus labor costs.

The 2011 Dodge Durango has quite a few problems, one of which was a faulty Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM). The TIPM is the electronic power relay center of the vehicle. When it malfunctions, it can cause a lot of electronic problems throughout the Durango. Owners have complained about various issues like all the warning lights coming on and the SUV refusing to start. A faulty TIPM was such a widespread problem that the automaker issued recall #P54 for 2011 Dodge Durangos with either a 3.6L or 5.7L engine. Dodge replaced the TIPMs of the recalled models to resolve the issue.

In addition to these issues, the 2008 Dodge Durango has been reported to have handling problems. Cars.com states that the Durango is "a little too inclined to edge out of its lane".

The 2008 Dodge Durango's interior is smaller than its rivals, while interior quality is lower. TheCarConnection.com notes some mixed reactions to 2008 Dodge Durango comfort levels. Cars.com reports the Durango "can hold up to seven occupants when equipped with three rows of seats," adding that a "five- even beneath the housing of the optional sunroof. It's easy to find a comfortable driving position".

Finally, the 2008 Dodge Durango has been reported to have electrical issues. A user on the Dodge Durango forum reported that when the battery is connected (no keys in the ignition), the fuel gauge jumps, some dash lights flash, the interior lights flash, and the top center console info center says “no bus”.

  • VIN: 1D4HB48208F
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: THE TRANSMISSION PUTS ITSELF INTO 4WD SOMETIMES WITH AN INSTRUMENT PANEL LIGHT, SOMETIMES WITHOUT. IT DOES THIS BOTH WHEN STOPPED AND AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. I'VE SEEN HUNDREDS OF THE SAME COMPLAINT WHEN I SEARCHED THIS ONLINE. IT'S A 2008 MODEL BUT IT'S A RELATIVELY NEW CAR FOR ME SO, THAT IS WHY I'M JUST MENTIONING IT NOW. IN THE FEW MONTHS I'VE OWNED THE VEHICLE, THIS HAS HAPPENED NO FEWER THAN 10 TIMES. ON TWO SEPARATE OCCASIONS IT HAPPENED WHILE I WAS DRIVING. I DID NOT CRASH ON EITHER OF THOSE OCCASIONS BUT, IT WAS VERY CLOSE BOTH TIMES. THE SECOND TIME, AFTER LURCHING VERY HARD ACROSS TWO LANES, IT THEN KICKED INTO NEUTRAL AND I WAS UNABLE TO ACCELERATE OR EVEN CONTINUE DOWN THE ROAD TO A SAFE SPOT TO STOP. INSTEAD, I WAS STUCK IN AN ACTIVE LANE TO WAIT ON A TOW TRUCK. LUCKILY, I WAS NOT HIT. I WAS JUST STRANDED. IF THIS WAS JUST ME, I WOULDN'T COMPLAIN HERE. BUT, AS I SAID, I SEARCHED ONLINE AND FOUND HUNDREDS OF COMPLAINTS OF THE SAME MATTER DATING BACK THE PAST DECADE OR SO. I LIVE IN DUBAI, UAE. MY PHONE NUMBER IS [XXX]. THE NUMBER IN THE INFORMATION BELOW IS A VERY OLD HOME PHONE NUMBER FROM WHEN I LIVED IN THE US. THE ATTACHED FORM WOULDN'T TAKE MY ACTUAL ADDRESS OR PHONE NUMBER. FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2017-07-01
  • VIN: 1D8HB58218F
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: GAS TANK FUEL PUMP UNIT LEAKING DUE TO SEVERELY DETERIORATED AND CRACKED PLASTIC. THIS WAS IDENTIFIED AS THE CAUSE OF A DASHBOARD WARNING LIGHT. ONLY AFTER DROPPING THE FUEL TANK IS THE FUEL PUMP UNIT VISIBLE. AIR BUBBLES COULD BE SEEN COMING FROM THE TOP OF THE FUEL PUMP UNIT. A METAL ATTACHMENT RING WAS SEVERELY RUSTED AND THE FUEL UNIT PLASTIC CASING WAS DETERIORATED AND LEAKING. THE WHITE PLASTIC USED FOR THE FUEL UNIT DOES NOT SEEM APPROPRIATE FOR THE HEAT AND CORROSION IN THAT LOCATION. THE FUEL PUMP UNIT WAS REPLACED AND THE WARNING LIGHT IS OFF. THIS VEHICLE HAD THE FUEL FILL TUBE REPLACED SIX MONTHS EARLIER TO RESOLVE THE FUEL SPILL PROBLEM ON THIS VEHICLE MODEL. THE WARNING LIGHT ONLY APPEARED AFTER THAT SERVICE. IT WAS TAKEN TO THE DEALER ONCE WITHOUT FINDING THE CAUSE, AND A SECOND TIME WHEN THE PROBLEM WAS FOUND. ONCE THE LIGHT COMES ON IT DOESN'T GO OFF. THE OWNER HAS SOME SUSPICION THAT THE WARNING LIGHT COMES ON WHEN THE GAS TANK IS A LITTLE LOW ON FUEL. PREVIOUSLY GAS FUMES COULD SOMETIMES BE NOTED. THE CAR IS STORED OUTSIDE. I, THE OWNER, AM CONCERNED ABOUT THE WHITE PLASTIC MATERIAL USED IN THE CONSTRUCTION OF THE FUEL PUMP UNIT.

I WAS RECENTLY AT THE DEALERSHIP FOR ANOTHER RECALL WHEN I ASKED ABOUT THIS ISSUE AND I WAS INFORMED THIS WAS CALLED THE "DEATH WOBBLE" OR THE "ROAD WALK". WHEN I HIT A BUMP MY TRUCK CAN LITERALLY SKIP INTO THE NEXT LANE. I HAVE RESEARCHED ONLINE AND FOUND THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM FOR DODGE SUVS. I DON'T UNDERSTAND HOW SOMETHING SO POTENTIALLY DANGEROUS HAS NOT BEEN ADDRESSED. THIS HAS BEEN AN ONGOING ISSUE. MY FIRST STEP IS TO FILE A VEHICLE SAFETY TO MAKE YOU GUYS AWARE OF THE ISSUE. THIS HAS BEEN ONGOING AND I'VE IGNORED IT THINKING THAT IS JUST THE WAY THESE TRUCKS ARE MADE, BUT AFTER ALMOST LOSING CONTROL WITH MY FAMILY IN THE CAR I HAVE TO DO SOMETHING.

Negative 2008 Dodge Durango car reviews

I have owned several full-size SUVs and trucks in the past, including a 2000 Ford Expedition, an '02 Chevy Tahoe, an '04 Chevy Avalanche, an '05 Dodge Ram 1500, and now this '07 Durango. However, I must say that the Durango did not meet my expectations. The handling of this vehicle is subpar and it does not provide a smooth ride. Additionally, the gas mileage is not as good as my previous trucks. Overall, I was disappointed with my experience.

  2. Lon Ryan 2024-09-02

This SUV model has not met my expectations. Despite being a limited 07 model with 40,000 miles, it has had recurring transmission issues and problems with the power back door. Additionally, the car's build quality is not up to par, and it has a tendency to get scratched easily. I believe that these issues should be addressed by the manufacturer.

  3. Jack Hirthe 2024-07-19

I must admit that the Durango is not very fuel-efficient. However, I really like this vehicle, especially as a mom of two young boys. It's a stylish and practical mommy wagon with leather interior, an mp3 multi-disc player, and a lovely maroon color with silver details. The third row seat is roomy and there's plenty of storage. The Durango handles great and has a very powerful v8 engine, making it fun to drive. The only other issue I've encountered is that sometimes the gas cap doesn't make a good seal, which causes the service engine light to come on temporarily. I plan to stop by my dealership to have that problem taken care of.

  4. Emiliano Keebler 2024-04-13

I've owned my Durango for almost a year now and have driven 15,600 miles. The Durango is comfortable, roomy, and the kids love the DVD and 3rd row options. It can seat 5 adults and 2 kids comfortably. However, I have noticed that the fuel economy is poor, even with the V-6 engine. I spend about $80 every 5 days, and I work from home! Additionally, the acceleration with the 6 cyl is poor. The resale value is also not great. I tried trading it in this week on a more economical vehicle, and it is only bringing $10,000 on trade (original MSRP $27,000). I will not be buying another one. Furthermore, there seems to be an issue with the transmission and a rattle in the back somewhere. In comparison, my '01 Tahoe (V-8) was far superior in fuel economy, quality, and performance.

Hello, we hope this message finds you well. We wanted to bring to your attention a concern we have with the vehicle. We have noticed that when the rear windows are open at speeds over 35 mph, the vehicle steering column and doors vibrate and shake. We contacted the dealership and were informed that it is a design flaw that cannot be fixed. At highway speeds, the passenger compartment fills with turbulent air causing a 'parachute' like response which lifts the rear of the vehicle, making it unstable to drive at highway speeds. The only solution available is to keep the windows closed. We understand that this may be frustrating, especially considering the price we paid for the vehicle. Additionally, we have experienced an issue where the vehicle pops out of reverse every 10th drive or so. We appreciate your attention to this matter and look forward to finding a solution together. Thank you for your time.

Positive 2008 Dodge Durango car reviews

We bought the Durango especially for its build inside and out. I'm so glad to hear that it also came with Flex Fuel, what a great addition for us! I love the power and it has an excellent turning radius. However, I do think the storage in the console and glove box is very small for such a big SUV.

  2. Perry Sporer 2024-11-27

I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying your new vehicle! It sounds like the interior is spacious and comfortable, and the exterior looks great. While the gas mileage could be better, it's understandable given the size of the truck. It's great that it fits everyone in your family, regardless of height. I hope that you don't experience any issues with it. It's interesting to hear that you've only owned Fords before, but it sounds like you got a great deal for your money!

I went with my mom to the local dodge dealer to help her pick out her van and saw a Durango staring back at me! Needless to say, I am now the proud owner of an SUV on 'Roids! It is so easy to drive, handles like a dream, and looks awesome. I absolutely love the 3rd row seats - my 13-year-old, who is 5'7

  4. Myron Hagenes 2024-11-15

Our Durango SLT has been absolutely flawless! When the salesman pulled it up for us to see, we were initially not too fond of the white color. However, we got an excellent price on it and decided to take the plunge. We have been pleasantly surprised with how committed it has been. Even after hitting 65000 miles on the odometer, it still looks brand new! The engine has always started on the first try and has never failed us. The 4.7 has been a pleasure to drive, as it is both fuel efficient and powerful. It can easily haul 7 people. The car runs quietly, but when you step on it, you get a powerful growl. We have had absolutely no issues with it. We are big fans of Chrysler and will definitely continue to buy from them!

  5. Jonathan Kreiger 2024-11-05

I'm so glad to hear that you had a great experience with your Dodge vehicle! It sounds like it was the perfect fit for your needs, with plenty of room for all your luggage and even your golf clubs and coolers. And it's wonderful to hear that you've had such a positive experience with Scotia Motors - it's always great to work with a dealership that provides excellent service. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!
