2001 Dodge Durango problems
The Dodge Durango is a mid-size/full-size SUV produced by Dodge starting with the 1998 model year. The first two generations were very similar in that both were based on the Dodge Dakota and Dodge Ram, both featured a body-on-frame construction and both were produced at the Newark Assembly Plant in Newark, Delaware through the 2009 model year.
The third-generation Durango began with the 2011 model year. It is built on the same platform as the Jeep Grand Cherokee, features unibody construction, and has been assembled at the Jefferson North Assembly Plant in Detroit, Michigan since late 2010.
Each generation had options for different engine sizes and power ratings, with different transmissions also. In 2009 a hybrid variant was introduced, but ended quickly with the second generation Durango. From 2007 to 2009 the Durango was available as the Chrysler Aspen from Chrysler. Over two million Durangos have been sold since it was introduced in 1998.

YOU HAVE TO BACKUP AND HIT THE BRAKES HARD, SOMETIMES SEVERAL TIMES, BEFORE IT "POPS" AND RELEASES. THE "POP IS A SURE SIGN THAT THE DESIGN IS FLAWED, CAUSING THE SHOES TO NOT RESEAT PROPERLY WHEN THE BRAKES ARE APPLIED AND YOU COME TO A FULL STOP. PLEASE DON'T TRY TO SAY YOU KNOW NOTHING ABOUT IT, WHEN IT IS GOOGLED BY THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE AND KNOW ONE KNOWS WHAT ELSE TO DO. EVEN A FOOL WOULD KNOW THERE IS A DESIGN FLAW. YOU ASK WHEN THIS HAPPENED BELOW. THIS HAPPENS EVERY DAY, YOU ASK WHAT SPEED, FROM A DEAD STOP TO A ANY SPEED, BUT IT RELEASE EVENTUALLY AFTER DRIVING FOR A DISTANCE. SUSPENSION,SEATS,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-03-01
- VIN: 1B4HS28Z01F
- Components: SUSPENSION,SEATS,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: WHILE I LOVE MY 2001 DODGE DURANGO RT, THERE ARE A COUPLE OF SERIOUS PROBLEMS / SAFETY ISSUES THE VEHICLE HAS. NUMBER ONE IS THE PASSENGER FRONT SEAT IS VERY LOOSE AND ROCKS BACK AND FORTH DURING ACCELERATION AND BRAKING WHICH COULD CAUSE SEVERE INJURIES IF THE VEHICLE WAS IN A WRECK, WHIPLASH ETC. IN DOING MY RESEARCH THE AVERAGE FIX THAT THE DEALERS WILL DO COSTS BETWEEN 600-800.00 WHICH IS TO REPLACE THE MOTOR ASSEMBLY. THERE ARE LINKS ON VARIOUS FORUM FOR INSTRUCTIONS TO FIX YOURSELF FOR ABOUT 40.00 OROVOODMG A BETTER FIX THAT THE DEALERS WILL NOT PROVIDE, BUT IT IS COMPLICATED AND VERY LABOR INTENSIVE. MY NUMBER ONE CONCERN IS TO BE SAFE AND HAVE SAFE PASSENGERS! TO BE ABLE TO BRING THIS INTO DODGE AND GET THIS PERMANENTLY FIXED AT NO COST TO ME. THERE ARE UNTOLD AMOUNTS OF DODGE DURANGO OWNERS OUT THERE WITH THIS SAME ISSUE, WHICH DODGE CURRENTLY WILL NOT RECALL. THE OTHER TWO ISSUES ARE INCREDIBLY DEFECTIVE BALL JOINTS. SINCE DODGE RECALLED THESE TRUCKS FOR THE BALL JOINTS MANY INCLUDING MINE PREVIOUS TO ME BUYING IT, WE'RE BROUGHT IN FOR RECALL REPAIR IN 2006. PLEASE NOTE THE SUSPENSION COMPONENTS COMPANY CALLED "MOOG" FIXED THIS DODGE ENGINEERING PROBLEM FOR THIS YEAR MAKE AND MODEL WITH THEIR OWN SPECIALLY DESIGNED BALL JOINT. AS FAR AS THE BRAKES GO THIS A VERY HEAVY SUV, IN WHICH IF ONE NEEDS TO STOP QUICKLY AND THE BRAKES FAIL OR SKID THE WHEELS DUE TO LOCK UP THIS AGAIN LIKE THE SEATS IS A VERY IMPORTANT SAFETY ISSUE THAT DODGE NEEDS TO CORRECT. I HAVE FAITH THAT DODGE WILL TAKE CARE OF MORE CONSUMER ISSUES THAN FORD EVER WILL.

2001 Dodge Durango recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 7 recalls for different components of the 2001 Dodge Durango.
- Manufacturer: SKF USA, INC.
- Components: SUSPENSION:FRONT:HUB
- Summary: SKF IS RECALLING 2,805 HUB UNITS, PART NO. BR930361, SOLD AS A SERVICE PART FOR 1997-2004 DODGE DAKOTA VEHICLES AND 1999-2003 DODGE DURANGO VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 2-WHEEL DRIVE & REAR AXLE ABS. DUE TO A SPECIFICATION ERROR, THE ROTOR PILOT FOR THE HUB UNIT MAY BE TOO LONG. THIS RESULTS IN THE WHEEL TO NOT BE SEATED FULLY AGAINST THE HUB FLANGE FACE DURING MOUNTING.
- Consequence: IMPROPER SEATING OF THE WHEEL CAN RESULT IN EXCESSIVE VIBRATION, BRAKE ROTOR NOISE, DIFFICULTY REMOVING THE WHEEL AFTER INSTALLATION AND OPERATION OF THE VEHICLE, AND POSSIBLY WHEEL-END SEPARATION DURING VEHICLE OPERATION. SHOULD WHEEL-END SEPARATION OCCUR, THE DRIVER COULD LOOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN A CRASH.
- Remedy: SKF WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND REPLACE THE DEFECTIVE HUB UNITS FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 5, 2008. OWNERS MAY CONTACT SKF VSM NORTH AMERICA CUSTOMER SERVICE AT 1-800-644-8999.
- Manufacturer: CHRYSLER LLC
- Components: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:LEVER AND LINKAGE:COLUMN SHIFT
- Summary: ON CERTAIN VAN AND PICKUP TRUCKS EQUIPPED WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS, THE IGNITION/PARK SHIFT INTERLOCK SYSTEM MAY BECOME INOPERATIVE. THIS CAN ALLOW THE SHIFTER TO BE MOVED OUT OF THE "PARK" POSITION WITH THE IGNITION KEY REMOVED (OR IN THE "LOCK" POSITION). THIS CAN ALSO ALLOW THE IGNITION KEY TO BE REMOVED WHEN THE SHIFTER HAS NOT BEEN PLACED IN THE "PARK" POSITION.
- Consequence: EITHER OF THESE CONDITIONS COULD ALLOW THE VEHICLE TO ROLL AWAY CAUSING A CRASH WITHOUT WARNING.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE GEARSHIFT BLOCKER AND BRACKET ASSEMBLY FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING JANUARY 2008. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHRYSLER AT 1-800-853-1403.
- Manufacturer: DAIMLERCHRYSLER CORPORATION
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: ON CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH FRONT BENCH SEATS ONLY, IF FLUID IS SPILLED FROM THE FLOOR MOUNTED CUP HOLDER, AN UNUSED CONSOLE POWER OUTLET CONNECTOR LOCATED UNDER THE SEAT MAY BECOME CONTAMINATED.
- Consequence: THIS MAY ALLOW DEVELOPMENT OF A HIGH RESISTIVE SHORT CIRCUIT IN THE CONNECTOR, WHICH COULD EVENTUALLY LEAD TO A FIRE.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE CONSOLE WIRING CONNECTOR FOR CORROSION, CLEAN AS REQUIRED, AND INSTALL A CAP TO PREVENT ADDITIONAL FLUID FROM CONTAMINATING THE CONNECTOR FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON OCTOBER 30, 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT DAIMLER CHRYSLER AT 1-800-853-1403.
- Manufacturer: K&N ENGINEERING, INC.
- Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING

ALSO, A SMALL PERCENTAGE OF THESE KITS WERE SOLD UNDER THE MOPAR PERFORMANCE PARTS BRAND NAME (P/NOS. P5007069 AND P5007070). ALL KITS WERE MANUFACTURED FROM APRIL 20, 1999, THROUGH SEPTEMBER 23, 2004. THESE ASSEMBLIES WERE MANUFACTURED AS REPLACEMENT EQUIPMENT FOR CERTAIN DODGE PICKUP TRUCKS AND SUVS. A SMALL PIECE OF MATERIAL FROM THE TUBE WALL COULD BE SUCKED INTO THE ENGINE THROTTLE BODY, WHICH COULD CAUSE THE THROTTLE TO BECOME JAMMED IN THE OPEN POSITION.
- Consequence: A JAMMED OPEN THROTTLE COULD CAUSE UNINTENDED ACCELERATION OF THE VEHICLE, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN A CRASH OR INCREASED STOPING DISTANCES WHEN BRAKING.
- Remedy: K&N WILL PROVIDE OWNERS WITH A FREE REPAIR KIT ALONG WITH REPAIR INSTRUCTIONS. THE RECALL BEGAN ON APRIL 20, 2006.
- Manufacturer: DAIMLERCHRYSLER CORPORATION
- Components: SUSPENSION:FRONT:CONTROL ARM:UPPER BALL JOINT
- Summary: ON CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES AND PICKUP TRUCKS EQUIPPED WITH FOUR-WHEEL DRIVE (4X4), IF MOISTURE LEAKS INTO THE FRONT SUSPENSION UPPER BALL JOINT, EVACUATION OF THE LUBRICANT AND CORROSION OF THE JOINT MAY CAUSE THE JOINT TO WEAR OVER AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME. THIS COULD CAUSE A CLUNKING NOISE IN THE FRONT SUSPENSION, WHICH MAY NOT ALWAYS BE HEARD BY THE VEHICLE OCCUPANTS.
- Consequence: EXCESSIVE WEAR IN THE UPPER BALL JOINT MAY ALLOW IT TO SEPARATE, WHICH COULD RESULT IN LOSS OF CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FRONT SUSPENSION UPPER BALL JOINTS. THIS SAFETY IMPROVEMENT CAMPAIGN BEGAN ON DECEMBER 21, 2004. OWNERS CAN CONTACT DAIMLERCHRYSLER AT 1-800-853-1403.

- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPROGRAM THE TRANSFER CASE CONTROL MODULE. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN APRIL 9, 2001. OWNERS WHO TAKE THEIR VEHICLES TO AN AUTHORIZED DEALER ON AN AGREED UPON SERVICE DATE AND DO NOT RECEIVE THE FREE REMEDY WITHIN A REASONABLE TIME SHOULD CONTACT DAIMLERCHRYSLER AT 1-800-853-1403.

I've owned my Durango since August 2001 and I've had nothing but good luck with it. I use it for running around town and long trips. I've even fit 5 adults with 2 sets of golf clubs and all the luggage for a two week holiday in the vehicle, and there was still room to spare. It runs well and hasn't caused me any major repairs.

I purchased this Durango when it had just under 100K miles on it. I had the transmission serviced at the time of purchase and it has been running fairly well since then, especially considering it was a $10K car. Although I have had some issues with the AC not being as strong as I would like, and the cooling system has overheated twice on hot summer days while driving on the highway. However, the 4X4 is amazing and with the low setting in the transfer case, it is able to extract itself from frame-rail deep mud. The mileage is okay, 15 while commuting to work and 18 on the highway. The interior is perfect for my growing family and dogs, with seating for 7 and easy parallel parking. The ride is somewhat truck-like, but that is to be expected from a body-on-frame design like this. Overall, it is the best fit for comfort, convenience, and capability.

I hope this message finds you well! I just wanted to share my experience with my beloved Durango. I purchased it brand new back in 2000 and I must say, it has been an absolute joy to own. Not a single issue to report! It has plenty of room for my family and friends, and the engine has plenty of power to get us where we need to go. My whole family adores this SUV and I'm sure yours will too!

I'm glad to hear that you had a great experience with your 2001 Durango! It's impressive that it was able to handle Minnesota winters and tow 6000lb trailers with ease. Even more impressive is the fact that you were able to walk away from a serious accident with only one bruise. It's no wonder that you replaced it with a 2002 model. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!

This SUV is the real deal, with a metal truck frame and a powerful 5.9 Liter 360 cubic inch V8 engine. The Durango provides a smooth ride while still letting you feel the road. The Infinity sound system is top-notch and the fit and finish of the vehicle, built in NJ, is comparable to imports. It may not be the most fuel-efficient, but it's the perfect American SUV to take out for a spin in CA or NY and enjoy the ride.

I have extensive experience with Dodge vehicles and have unfortunately encountered issues with the electrical system, brakes, and engine in the past. Despite my disappointment, I remain confident in my ability to identify and address these issues. I am currently working to resolve the problems with my Durango and my husband's pickup, and I am optimistic that we will find a solution. While I have encountered some challenges, I am confident that with the right expertise and support, we can overcome them.

The vehicle's front disc brake system, without rear brakes, makes it difficult to drive in stop-and-go traffic, as every bump in the road is felt. The writer feels that they were ripped off when they traded in their 97 Durango for a supposedly more luxurious model with leather seats and Infinity surround speakers, only to end up with this vehicle for an additional 2 and a half years. A more suitable option should have been provided.

Over the course of 11 months, I've driven 40,000 km with this vehicle and it has performed well. However, there are a few issues that I believe need to be addressed. Unfortunately, after only 3 months of ownership, the computer chip for the fuel pump died and there were no chips available in Canada, which caused a week-long delay. Additionally, the light switch for the fog lamps broke off after 10 months. Currently, I'm trying to get Dodge to look at the brakes, as I've noticed that they release after a few seconds of consistent and sudden pressure, especially when hitting a bump and applying the brakes.

Hi there! I understand that you're looking for a vehicle that can tow under 4000 lbs and handle well in the rain. Unfortunately, the Dodge full-size SUV may not be the best fit for you as the brakes tend to get loose in wet conditions and the ABS system is not the most reliable. However, I'm happy to help you explore other options that may better suit your needs. Let's chat more about what you're looking for!

Hi there! I've been a fan of the Dodge Durango ever since it first came out. I actually bought a 2001 model myself, but unfortunately, I've had to take it in for warranty work quite frequently.
