2019 Dodge Durango problems
The Dodge Durango is a mid-size/full-size SUV produced by Dodge starting with the 1998 model year. The first two generations were very similar in that both were based on the Dodge Dakota and Dodge Ram, both featured a body-on-frame construction and both were produced at the Newark Assembly Plant in Newark, Delaware through the 2009 model year.
The third-generation Durango began with the 2011 model year. It is built on the same platform as the Jeep Grand Cherokee, features unibody construction, and has been assembled at the Jefferson North Assembly Plant in Detroit, Michigan since late 2010.
Each generation had options for different engine sizes and power ratings, with different transmissions also. In 2009 a hybrid variant was introduced, but ended quickly with the second generation Durango. From 2007 to 2009 the Durango was available as the Chrysler Aspen from Chrysler. Over two million Durangos have been sold since it was introduced in 1998.

Common 2019 Dodge Durango problems
The 2019 Dodge Durango has some common problems that have been reported by owners. These problems are generally minor compared to other large SUVs, leading to lower repair bills as the vehicle ages.
One of the most common problems is burnt-out rear lights. This issue occurs at around 15,000 miles and is usually caused by a worn-out bulb in the light assembly. Replacing the bulb costs around $15, but if the central LED light bar breaks, then it can cost around $450 to swap out.
Another problem that has been reported is worn-out shocks. This issue occurs at roughly 30,000 miles and is considered to be a consumable component that wears out over time and needs to be replaced. A new set of shocks costs around $650 to install.
Moldy smells coming from the A/C system have also shown up on some Durango models within the first 1,500 miles. The smells are caused by a clogged A/C drain line, which allows mold to build up in the system. Cleaning out the drain line costs around $100 for labor and fixes the problem.
There are three recalls on the 2019 Dodge Durango, which is similar to other large SUVs from the same year. The most serious recall covers a braking system malfunction, which can allow the vehicle to roll away while in park. Dodge will update the software on the ABS module for free on affected models. Other recalls cover the rearview camera and the front pinion gears. Dodge will fix both of those issues for free as well.
In terms of durability, a well-maintained 2019 Dodge Durango can last around 200,000 miles, which is shorter than the long-lasting Toyota Sequoia. Regular annual maintenance costs are slightly higher than some competitors, according to data provided by Repair Pal, at $625 per year. As a used 2019 Durango reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history, owners should be prepared to replace the battery cable for $250, the wheel hub assembly costing $450, along with the A/C condenser fan, which costs $625.
The 2019 Dodge Durango is a reliable vehicle, with many owners reporting that they have not had any issues with it. However, it is important to be aware of the common problems that have been reported and to address them promptly to ensure the longevity of the vehicle.

- Fire: 1
- VIN: 1C4RDJDG0KC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SEATS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: On the morning of 10/09/2024, I started my 2019 Dodge Durango and exited the vehicle, after 2 minutes the entire interior of the vehicle was engulfed in flames. EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-08-01
- VIN: 1C4RDJDG1KC
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: The rear tail light assembly that is mounted on the tailgate (it is often referred to as a "racetrack" light) filled with water and quit working while the vehicle was under warranty. It apparently fails due to a defective seal between the lens and the housing. The light assembly was replaced under warranty and lasted approximately 1 year before leaking and filling with water again. This time it was not covered by warranty. I drained the water, but one of the license plate lights no longer illuminates. It is impossible to change just a bulb. To repair this light requires replacement of the entire assembly at a cost of approximately $2,000. Driving the vehicle with an unilluminated license plate subjects me to being stopped by law enforcement and issued a citation. This is not an isolated incident as I see countless Dodge Durangos, including many that are used by law enforcement, with the same problem.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-07-05
- VIN: 1C4RDJDGXKC
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: I was driving down the freeway going about 70 on a trip with my 2 small kids. We were about 2.5 hours from home when the check engine light came on and was orange. Within minutes, while I was safely trying to get off of the freeway, it turned red and was blinking. I had to slow down to under 40 to get it to go back to orange while I tried to find a place to pull over and figure out what to do, creating a dangerous situation for myself and other drivers. The car only had 40,000 miles, is regularly serviced, and there were no previous issues with any of the warning lights. Took to the first repair shop and they said it was likely the coolant pipes and they have seen it in Durangos because of the way the car is assembled. They recommended that I bring it to the dealership because they didn't want to void my warranty. Dealership confirmed it was "large leak coming from back of engine. upon further inspection leak is coming from rear heater coolant pipes. replaced coolant pipes and found coolant leaks from rear heater hoses. replaced rear heater hoses" The issue with the heater hoses having to be replaced is that the car is assembled so that it has to be completely lifted and split in 2 to be able to do the work. Because of the position of the hoses, there are parts of the frame of the car that rub against those hoses and pipes creating damage and leaks, and there is no easy way to repair the damage that is caused by manufacturer positioning. The parts themselves were less than $700, but the labor charge for having to have multiple people work on taking the entire car apart to replace those parts was more than $5,000.

I have been to the dealership and contacted chrysler customer care. I have spent about an hour total on 2 phone calls to only be told there is nothing they can do about it.This is clearly a manufacturing defect and a common problem with Dodge Durango's, bcause I see too many with the same problem that I have and its always the center of the lift gate and the right side tail light. EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-02-10
- VIN: 1C4RDJDG9KC
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: Both rear license plate lights are out as well as racetrack taillight on hatch has water in it. This is a known defect that is all over the web. I am going to engage dealer but car is 5 years old now. Really should be recalled as it is a danger and a super expensive repair as the entire raceway has to be replaced.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-22
- VIN: 1C4RDJDGXKC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: The race track lighting on the vehicle which is the back lights has a factory defect and fills with water from rain and shorts out. Now my lights do not work and can also cause my brake lights and other lights to fail or cause an electrical fire. God forbid. This is a known problem but dodge has not made it a recall yet and should. The part is 1200 without installation.
POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-20
- VIN: 1C4RDJDGXKC
- Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: When my family and I were making an hour long drive to a hotel for the weekend, the check engine light came on briefly, and went off. On the way home, it came on once more and vehicle lost power and i thought it was going to stall but then it was fine. I thought it was from the cold weather but a few days later, the light came on and stayed on. I got P0001 & P000A codes on a reader. It's unsafe in frigid temps to have the risk of vehicle stalling because of this issue & this isn't the 1st computer/sensor/electrical issue I've had with it since I bought it certified new. I think there are multiple computer issues with this model year and just want to make others aware. There is also a recall with the brake system in this vehicle.
EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-11-01
- VIN: 1C4SDJCT5KC
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: My LED lighting on the lift-gate started to spot out and had condensation in the light do to the seal not being properly sealed and letting water get into the light and burning out the LED bulbs. Now my whole running lift-gate LED is out and this is very harmful for myself and other drivers on the road do to possibly being rear ended at anytime. This problem is not covered under warranty. This is unacceptable for a LED lighting system allowing water in the system to burn out the LED lighting system. Every time it rains/snows, car wash water should not be getting into the light.

I did reach out to the company Maxi Cosi and they stated that the movement was perfectly normal. Even after the video of the base moving. We returned the car seat to Walmart and showed them the video of the base and Maxi Cosi’s response. Walmart approved the return and placed the car seat in damaged goods so that another expecting parent didn’t buy it.

- VIN: 1C4RDJDG9KC

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-01-01
- VIN: 1C4RDHDGXKC
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: The whole rear "racetrack" LED light on the lift gate fills with water and goes out. This is a VERY common and known problem by dodge/Mopar and they will not do anything to fix it. It is a $2000 out of pocket fix and that is asinine! It significantly reduces visibility from the rear of the vehicle while traveling at night.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-10-05
- VIN: 1C4RDJDG5KC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I HAVE A 2019 DODGE DURANGO Which has a faulty brake light that stays on. after doing some extensive research there was a recall on the durango. (Recall 21A, NHTSA 23E-019) This recall is for defective Hydraulic Control Unit. Now the recall letter issues a suspected range on the units based on the Julian date of Manufacturing. for this recall is numbers 8166-9106. my unit is8355. The dealerships and Dodge have been making it difficult for me to have replaced because my VIN is not listed for this recall, but its clear it should based on the recall letter that provides the exact range of faulty units that mine falls inline with. I have attached some pics of the recall letter and of my hydraulic unit. any help will be appreciated
EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-10-09
- VIN: 1C4SDHCT7KC
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: Water continually builds up in the middle part of the tail lights. This is now making the lights in my tail lights go out. These are lights that can't be replaced without replacing the entire piece. I see this often on Dodge Durangos of my model and it's definitely an issue. I still cannot find out how water is getting in and it will continue to make more of my taillight go out.
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-10-04
- VIN: 1C4RDJDG2KC
- Components: STEERING
- Summary: Goodyear examined my Durango on October 4th 2023. Examination results reported a flawed electromechanical steering gearbox. Price to repair including parts, upwards of 4,000 dollars. I have a prepaid warranty covering repairs and parts. Parts availability from the Chrysler corporation are the issue. The dealership Orange Park Chrysler Jeep Dodge was informed AND examined the vehicle themselves. They related to me the "part isn't available". I returned to the Goodyear dealership. Their response is the same. Neither factory nor aftermarket steering gearbox are available for purchase. Therein lies the reason for this report from me. I've written emails to Chrysler (stellantis) customer service 3 times. The 3rd time being today October 16th. They responded once shortly after the October 4th email. Since then quiet as a church mouse. So far the steering gearbox just pops and makes grinding noises. I'm 67 years old and existing on disability payments. I can't get the parts. I still owe 32,000 plus (9650 for warranty coverage). So I CAN'T get rid of it. If it fails while being driven, State Farm won't cover the damages because I KNEW the vehicle was needing repairs and continued to drive it. I'm FORCED to drive it because of parts UNAVAILABLE by Chrysler or the aftermarket. I can't afford a rental car for what appears to be an EXTENDED period of time. I can't attach the 3 emails here. However the emails WILL be retained for future reference. Any assistance you may provide would be greatly appreciated.
UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-01
- VIN: 1C4RDJDG0KC
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: Cooling system hose blew from a faulty clamp rubbing a hole in it. There’s a TON of reports of this same problem with the same model/year. All antifreeze leaked out and overheated engine.
POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-07
- VIN: 1C4SDHCT4KC
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: The vent tube leading to the transmission came disconnected and sucked up water into my transmission. Leading to the transmission to not have any power. My son and I were in the the car trying to go up the hill when it lost power and started rolling backwards down the hill into traffic with the gas pedal to the floor. The mechanic at dodge said he has no idea how the vent tube was able to suck up that much water into the transmission. There was no lights that came on about the vent tube until it was too late and even then the check engine light would go on and off every time the car was turned off. The car is un drivable and currently at JT Dodge land in Columbia SC. I have notified my Insurance to see if this is something that would be covered l.
2019 Dodge Durango recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 3 recalls for different components of the 2019 Dodge Durango.
- Manufacturer: Chrysler (FCA US, LLC)
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK/TRACTION CONTROL/ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP:CONTROL UNIT/MODULE
- Summary: Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2018-2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango vehicles. A malfunction in the antilock-brake system (ABS) module may illuminate the brake lights, and allow the vehicle to start and shift out of Park without the brake pedal being applied.
- Consequence: A vehicle that starts and shifts out of Park without applying the brake pedal can result in vehicle rollaway, increasing the risk of a crash without prior warning and/or injury to others outside of the vehicle.
- Remedy: The remedy includes updated HCU/ABS module software that prevents the HCU/ABS module from falsely reading pressure in the primary circuit. FCA has decided to do a two-Phase Campaign remedy schedule. Phase 1 began November 17, 2022. Phase 2 begin date has not been determined yet. Interim owner notification letters explaining the safety risk were mailed July 28, 2020. Owner notification letters were mailed on November 29, 2022. Owners may contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA US, LLC's number for this recall is Z48.
- Manufacturer: Chrysler (FCA US LLC)
- Components: BACK OVER PREVENTION: SENSING SYSTEM: CAMERA
- Summary: Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2020 Jeep Gladiator and Jeep Cherokee, 2019-2020 Ram 1500 Pickup, Ram 2500 Pickup, Ram 3500 Pickup, Chrysler Pacifica, Dodge Durango, Jeep Grand Cherokee, Jeep Wrangler, and Jeep Renegade and 2019 Dodge Challenger vehicles equipped with 8.4" or 12" radio displays. A software error can cause the rearview camera image to remain displayed after the vehicle has been shifted out of reverse. As such, these vehicles fail to comply with the requirements of Federal Motor Vehicle Safety Standard (FMVSS) number 111, "Rearview Mirrors."
- Consequence: The lingering rearview image can distract the driver, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Chrysler has notified owners, and dealers will update the radio display software, free of charge. Optionally, owners can choose to remotely update their software via an Over-The-Air (OTA) update available as of May 1, 2020. The recall began April 27, 2020. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is W30-W37.
- Manufacturer: Chrysler (FCA US LLC)
- Components: POWER TRAIN:DRIVELINE:DIFFERENTIAL UNIT
- Summary: Chrysler (FCA US LLC) is recalling certain 2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango vehicles. The front differential may have been assembled with pinion gears that are insufficiently hardened, which can lead to the gear teeth wearing down. If both pinion gears have their teeth sufficiently worn off, torque power can not be transferred from the front wheels to the driveline, resulting in loss of power while driving and loss of the PARK function when stationary.
- Consequence: A sudden loss of power while driving or loss of the transmission PARK function can increase the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Chrysler will notify owners, and dealers will replace the front differential, free of charge. The recall began May 21, 2020. Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Chrysler's number for this recall is W22.

My second Tahoe had done about 184K miles. Before that, I had owned 2 Blazers, 2 Grand Cherokees, and a Land Rover. As I turned 60, I decided that this would be my last car. I had good luck with Jeeps, and my son had a beautiful 2018 SRT Durango, so I went back to Dodge. However, I made a mistake by getting a Journey. It was a great little car, but as a car guy who had built hot rods, I was wrong to think that I was ready to settle down and wanted to get something sporty, not an old man's car. After 7 months and 5600 miles, I traded the Journey at the dealership my family has used for years, where I had bought it, and got a Durango R/T. I am so very glad I did because it is the best and most enjoyable car to drive I have ever owned. It is fun to drive, handles great, comfortable, fast, sporty, has tons of room, and is just plain sexy. I am constantly getting comments from strangers and friends alike on it, more compliments than the hot rods I had built. I cannot recommend it enough. If you want something fun to drive, go test drive one, and you will be sold...

Coming from a sports car to buying an R/T has been really amazing so far! It drives like a sports car, but it's an SUV! You get the best of both worlds. Highly recommend!

We have owned three Durangos so far, and we are big fans of this SUV. Our first Durango was an '01 SLT, which we drove for 120,000 miles and it still runs great even after being rolled over. The second one was a '16 R/T, which was an impressive grocery getter and tow vehicle. We were so impressed with the new '18 SRT after watching a YouTube video that we had to have one. We got ours on Oct. 30, '17, and it was one of the first five in the Northwest. It is a beast with all the bells and whistles you could want in an SUV, and the sound of the pipes when you stand on it is like old school headers and straight pipes! However, we have had some issues with the brakes locking up every time we park it in snow, slush, or rain, which has been frustrating. It has been in the shop every other month with front-end issues, like clunking noises when putting it in drive or turning left and vibrations around 55 to 60 mph. It also needs four new tires, front brakes, and rotors, which is going to cost over $2,000 and is not covered by the warranty. We bought this SUV for its power and comfort, not to hot-rod or tow trailers daily. Despite these issues, it is still a head-turner and a powerful vehicle with towing and power comparable to my Ford 7.3 Powerstroke, but with better acceleration and comfort.Other than that, I think we should have kept our R/T. It was all around just as good.

Congratulations on your new 2019 Dodge Durango SXT! It sounds like you had a great experience driving it on the Alaskan highway from Anchorage to Kenai, achieving a steady 25 MPG. Although you encountered a problem with the towing capacity, it's great to hear that the dealer was willing to work with you to find a solution. It's impressive that you were able to tow a 6000 lb trailer to Seward through mountains without a tow package and had no problems. It's clear that you have a lot of exciting adventures planned with your 4100 lb (dry) RV, and I'm sure your new Durango with the tow package will be up to the task. Thanks for sharing your experience with us!

Your 2019 RT sounds absolutely beautiful with its grey exterior and red leather interior! I can understand that the gas mileage may have come as a bit of a shock, especially when compared to your previous V6 engine. It's also worth noting that the RT's stiffer suspension can make for a rougher ride. However, despite these minor drawbacks, it's clear that you're still in love with your Durango and all the power it offers. The sport button sounds like a great feature for an extra boost of power when you need it. Thank you for sharing your experience with me!

I purchased this vehicle used with 60k miles. Unfortunately, I experienced some issues such as the purge hose splitting in the first month, the backup camera and radio malfunctioning, and the front cv axle breaking while driving through 3 inches of snow. Currently, I am dealing with a manufacturing issue where a heater hose clamp rubbed through the aluminum tubing to the rear heater, and it is difficult to reach the clamp to move it. Overall, my experience with this car has been challenging and costly. I would not recommend purchasing a Dodge in the future. Thank you for considering my experience.

The Durango has a beautiful screen, good technology, and a fine Hemi engine. While some 2019 Durangos have the 3.6 engine, which may be a letdown for such a large SUV, it still offers a comfortable ride. The interiors have dingy black headliners and some cheap plastics, but overall it's a decent vehicle. There is a slight lean when going into curves, and even with the Hemi, it may feel a bit clumsy. However, it's important to note that driving preferences vary, and it's always a good idea to test drive multiple vehicles before making a decision. Have you considered exploring some foreign SUVs? They may offer better handling and a more enjoyable driving experience!

Hi there! I really like this vehicle, but I have noticed a few issues. Currently, it has about 31k miles. Sometimes the touchscreen has trouble turning on when I start the car, or it has randomly cut out while driving. I'm guessing it's just loose wiring. The biggest issue I had was a coolant leak. I refilled it, but 2 days later it was completely empty. It turned out that one of the hoses was clamped in a way that caused it to rub against the radiator hose with any engine movement, so they had to take out the engine just to replace it.
