The Dodge Durango is a mid-size/full-size SUV produced by Dodge starting with the 1998 model year. The first two generations were very similar in that both were based on the Dodge Dakota and Dodge Ram, both featured a body-on-frame construction and both were produced at the Newark Assembly Plant in Newark, Delaware through the 2009 model year.

The third-generation Durango began with the 2011 model year. It is built on the same platform as the Jeep Grand Cherokee, features unibody construction, and has been assembled at the Jefferson North Assembly Plant in Detroit, Michigan since late 2010.

Each generation had options for different engine sizes and power ratings, with different transmissions also. In 2009 a hybrid variant was introduced, but ended quickly with the second generation Durango. From 2007 to 2009 the Durango was available as the Chrysler Aspen from Chrysler. Over two million Durangos have been sold since it was introduced in 1998.

This can cause a crash because the vehicle will stall and not operate. The issue was confirmed by the Dodge, Jeep and Lincoln dealer with both vehicles I've owned. There were no indications that this component was failing other than the hesitation to start a month prior and the hesitation went from every few days to every single day.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-11-21
  • VIN: 1C4RDJEGXGC
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: Around Thanksgiving of this year (2022), I noticed that my taillight housing for the center LED Racetrack lighting on my 2016 Dodge Durango was retaining water. I found this odd because light housings are supposed to be sealed and not allow water to enter. If water gets in, the electrical is at risk and lights can be shorted out or even cause an electrical fire. I conducted research and have found that this is a common issue with the Dodge Durango since this model has been sold. Water has been reported all over the internet of rear light housings that have shorted out or caused major issues. If the lights go out, it can cause visibility issues for vehicles behind you. I have noticed that the lights are now flickering on my vehicle in the area where the water settles. The same light housing contains the license plate lights, the back-up camera, and the reverse lights. I have also noticed that the main taillights that have the functioning brake lights and turn signal have had condensation as well. The part to replace this entire one section of lighting and electrical components is around $1,000. I have noticed that a technical bulletin was sent out by Dodge reference the "License Plate LED Light Inoperative - Moisture Visible Within the Lens" but it seems to only apply to the license plate lights. However, I believe the issue is much bigger than just the license plate lights and should be addressed with the manufacturer. Most of the components on this light housing contain lighting that is required by most state laws, especially in Texas, to be functional. The rear license plate lights and the reverse lights must be functional to pass vehicle inspection that is required to register the vehicle every year. Worst case scenario, the entire housing shorts out and the owner is left with a vehicle that has non-functioning license plate lights, reverse camera, and reverse lights.

The vehicle was taken to the tire dealer and the driver's and passenger's side rear tires were replaced; however, the failure recurred with the driver's and passenger's side front tires. EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-04-08
  • VIN: 1c4rdhdg9gc
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: WATER HAS LEAKED INTO THE "RACE TRACK LIGHTING" ON THE LIFT GATE. THIS IS FROM NORMAL, EVERYDAY DRIVING USE AND CARE. THE LIFT GATE TAIL LIGHTS, AS WELL AS LICENSE PLATE LIGHTING NO LONGER FUNCTION. THIS MAKES MY VEHICLE DANGEROUS, AND ILLEGAL TO DRIVE AT NIGHT. I HAVE READ ON MULTIPLE DODGE DURANGO FORUMS THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM, AND ONE DODGE DEALER I SPOKE TO SAID THEY SEE THIS ALL THE TIME. THE PART ALONE TO FIX THE PROBLEM IS QUOTED AT $1000 BEFORE TAX. TO ME, IT IS CRAZY THAT IT COSTS THIS MUCH SIMPLY TO MAKE MY VEHICLE LEGAL AGAIN, ESPECIALLY WHEN IT IS A COMMON ISSUE ACCORDING TO MY RESEARCH. I FEEL THAT DODGE SHOULD ISSUE A RECALL, AS THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM, IT'S A SAFETY, AND LEGAL ISSUE, AND IT IS SO EXPENSIVE TO FIX. I BOUGHT A NEWER VEHICLE TO NOT HAVE PROBLEMS, AND IT IS HARD TO BE ABLE TO AFFORD SUCH AN EXPENSIVE FIX WHEN ALL I AM TRYING TO DO IS MAKE MY VEHICLE LEGAL TO DRIVE AGAIN. DODGE NEEDS TO DO THE RIGHT THING, AND TAKE CARE OF THIS PROBLEM THAT HAS PLAGUED MANY OF ITS LOYAL CUSTOMERS.

Owners may contact Chrysler customer service at 1-800-853-1403. Note: Owners are advised to stop using cruise control until the software update has been performed. In the event that cruise control cannot be disengaged while driving, owners should firmly and steadily apply the brakes and shift the transmission to neutral, placing the vehicle in park once it has stopped.

Negative 2016 Dodge Durango car reviews

  1. Gabriel Dooley 2024-04-11

My insurance company provided me with a 2016 Dodge Durango AWD Limited while my Jeep Compass is being repaired due to a fallen tree. It's interesting to note that the automotive press has a lot of praise for the Durango, while having little good to say about the Compass. Personally, I'm looking forward to getting my little Compass back. In my humble opinion, the Durango is a bit of an over-engineered mastodon. From the stereo that I can't seem to turn off to the engine that shuts off every time I stop, this ranch house on wheels is a Chinese water-torture of constant annoyance. It seems to run

Positive 2016 Dodge Durango car reviews

  1. Louisa Von 2024-09-15

So far, I think the Durango is a great car! I'm getting about 20mpg, which is a pleasant surprise. The ride is comfortable and the technology is really easy to use. The only thing I'm not a fan of is the auto start - it takes some getting used to. The engine shuts down every time you come to a complete stop and restarts when you press the accelerator. I do wonder about the life of the starter with this feature though.

  2. Emmitt Waters 2024-08-24

You've got yourself an amazing deal on a great vehicle!

  3. Golden Funk 2024-06-02

I was most amazed by the vehicle's safety features.

  4. Jake Schultz 2024-04-16

Towing capacity and capability are important factors, along with safety, comfort, and technology features. The dealer has confirmed a 15 percent tongue weight to towing ratio for the Citadel.

  5. Clemens Koepp 2024-03-19

Hello! I'm so glad to hear that you're a huge Mopar lover! I wanted to share my experience with you regarding the Citadel. My wife and I test drove a few 2014's and 2015's before finally settling on a 2016 Citadel in 2016. We've had a few minor issues with the car, such as the door locks acting up at 31,000 miles and some bugs here and there, but nothing too alarming. We did have some trouble with the fuel door, which I've researched and found to be a common issue due to bad engineering design. The washer fluid has also been acting up, but it's not a major concern. We did have an issue with the AC compressor around 45,000 miles, but I believe the dealership may have tampered with it. However, I still love the car and I'm just more careful about which dealership I choose. I have MAX Care lifetime, which is great, but I've noticed that some dealerships take advantage of it and charge for unnecessary repairs. Just be aware of this. Other than that, the HID bulbs are a bit pricey, but I take my Citadel to a dealership with a 4.5 rating and a free drive-thru carwash, which is just as good as the $10 one in town. Thanks for listening!
