2002 Dodge Durango problems
The Dodge Durango is a mid-size/full-size SUV produced by Dodge starting with the 1998 model year. The first two generations were very similar in that both were based on the Dodge Dakota and Dodge Ram, both featured a body-on-frame construction and both were produced at the Newark Assembly Plant in Newark, Delaware through the 2009 model year.
The third-generation Durango began with the 2011 model year. It is built on the same platform as the Jeep Grand Cherokee, features unibody construction, and has been assembled at the Jefferson North Assembly Plant in Detroit, Michigan since late 2010.
Each generation had options for different engine sizes and power ratings, with different transmissions also. In 2009 a hybrid variant was introduced, but ended quickly with the second generation Durango. From 2007 to 2009 the Durango was available as the Chrysler Aspen from Chrysler. Over two million Durangos have been sold since it was introduced in 1998.

Common 2002 Dodge Durango problems
Based on the complaints from owners of the 2002 Dodge Durango, several common problems have been reported:
- Throttle Position Sensor Issues: Owners have experienced throttle issues, engine drivability problems, and check engine lights related to the throttle position sensor. This sensor is located on the throttle body and can cause significant performance issues when malfunctioning.
- Exhaust Manifold Bolts: A common problem is broken exhaust manifold bolts leading to exhaust leaks. Replacing these bolts can be challenging as it often requires removing the entire manifold and replacing the gasket to resolve the issue.
- Front Driveshaft Concerns: Some owners have reported issues with the front driveshaft, which can lead to noise while driving or acceleration problems. Addressing this problem may involve inspecting and potentially replacing the front driveshaft.
- Headlight Fogging: Fogging of headlights in damp conditions has been reported, affecting visibility for the driver and other road users. This issue can worsen in colder temperatures and may require replacing the sealed unit to restore proper lighting functionality.
- Driver's Door Lock Cylinder Switch: Owners have experienced door locks cycling on and off while driving, often due to a faulty door lock cylinder switch. Moisture ingress, especially after heavy rain or car washes, can lead to this issue, requiring replacement of the affected switch.
These problems can impact the safety, performance, and overall driving experience of the 2002 Dodge Durango. Addressing these issues promptly through proper diagnosis and repair is crucial to ensure the vehicle's optimal functioning and safety on the road.

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-03-15
- VIN: 1b4hr48z42f
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
- Summary: While pulling a travel trailer I got onto the freeway. As I have been pulling the trailer for a while now with this vehicle my comfort speed is around 45mph but will push up to 50mph maybe 55mph at the most. Anyways while entering the freeway I accelerated and as I got ready to merge I let my foot off the gas but the peddle stayed down and the vehicle continued to accelerate until around 80mph to 85mph when I finally got the peddle to release and stop acceleration. I quickly got off the freeway to calm myself as I was terrified I was going to crash. During this incident the first thing I did was tap the brakes lightly which did absolutely nothing and the car kept accelerating next I grabbed the floor mat thinking that maybe it was obstructing the peddle, it was not. Then I quickly used my foot to wiggle under the peddle and pull up multiple times until it finally released and came up stopping acceleration and luckily to my relief I did not crash although I had come very close had there been any more traffic or if I had got going g any faster I may not have been so lucky. This only happened the one time where I got to dangerous speeds but since then the peddle has started to stick two other times but this times it was much easier to get the peddle to release and I wasn't towing a trailer. I read that this happened in another model in freezing temperatures fro. The same manufacturer but couldn't find anything to it without freezing temperatures. I think it is a manufacturer defect that maybe affects other 2002 Dodge Durango I dony know if pulling the trailer triggered this or not as I said it has happened twice since and that was without a trailer attached. Definitely scary and should be looked at.. I don't have the funds to take it to a shop so I haven't had it professionally looked at yet

- VIN: 1B4HS48N22F
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: WHILE DRIVING, NO MATTER WHAT SPEED THE VEHICLE STARTS TO SPUTTER, LOSES POWER AND WILL STALL. I WAS LOW ON GAS, AND TOOK MY CAR TO A LOCAL GAS STATION FOR FUEL. AFTER PUTTING $10 IN MY CAR WAS RUNNING EXTREMELY ROUGH. I WAS DOING ABOUT 20 MPH, WHEN IT JUST SHUT OFF. BRAKES GOT REAL HARD. AFTER RE STARTING THE VEHICLE ALL SEEMED NORMAL. THEN, I DROVE ABOUT 3 CAR LENGTHS AND IT DID IT AGAIN AT A RED LIGHT. I TRIED PUSHING THE GAS TO SEE IF THAT WOULD DO ANYTHING, IT DIDNT. I DROVE ALL IN , ABOUT 3 MILES, AND THE CAR STALLED 7 TIMES. WHILE IN THE DRIVE THROUGH, IT STALLED 3 ABD AT ONE POINT JERKED SO FAR I THOUGHT I WAS GOING TO HIT THE CAR IN FRONT OF ME. VEHICLE SPEED DOES NOT MATTER , AS IT WILL SLOWLY LOSE POWER AND TURN OFF. I WAS DRIVING LOCALLY ON A CITY STREET. MY BEST GUESS TO THIS PROBLEM WOULD BE SOMETHING RELATED TO THE EVAP SYSTEM, QUITE POSSIBLY THE PURGE VALVE BUT IM NOT 100% SURE BUT THIS SITUATION IS VERY UNSAFE, I HAVE 2 SMALL CHILDREN AND CANNOT DRIVE THIS VEHICLE. DURING MY TRIP THE SPEED WAS BETWEEN 20-45 MPH

2002 Dodge Durango recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 6 recalls for different components of the 2002 Dodge Durango.
- Manufacturer: SKF USA, INC.
- Components: SUSPENSION:FRONT:HUB
- Summary: SKF IS RECALLING 2,805 HUB UNITS, PART NO. BR930361, SOLD AS A SERVICE PART FOR 1997-2004 DODGE DAKOTA VEHICLES AND 1999-2003 DODGE DURANGO VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 2-WHEEL DRIVE & REAR AXLE ABS. DUE TO A SPECIFICATION ERROR, THE ROTOR PILOT FOR THE HUB UNIT MAY BE TOO LONG. THIS RESULTS IN THE WHEEL TO NOT BE SEATED FULLY AGAINST THE HUB FLANGE FACE DURING MOUNTING.
- Consequence: IMPROPER SEATING OF THE WHEEL CAN RESULT IN EXCESSIVE VIBRATION, BRAKE ROTOR NOISE, DIFFICULTY REMOVING THE WHEEL AFTER INSTALLATION AND OPERATION OF THE VEHICLE, AND POSSIBLY WHEEL-END SEPARATION DURING VEHICLE OPERATION. SHOULD WHEEL-END SEPARATION OCCUR, THE DRIVER COULD LOOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN A CRASH.
- Remedy: SKF WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND REPLACE THE DEFECTIVE HUB UNITS FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 5, 2008. OWNERS MAY CONTACT SKF VSM NORTH AMERICA CUSTOMER SERVICE AT 1-800-644-8999.
- Manufacturer: CHRYSLER LLC
- Components: POWER TRAIN:AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION:LEVER AND LINKAGE:COLUMN SHIFT
- Summary: ON CERTAIN VAN AND PICKUP TRUCKS EQUIPPED WITH AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSIONS, THE IGNITION/PARK SHIFT INTERLOCK SYSTEM MAY BECOME INOPERATIVE. THIS CAN ALLOW THE SHIFTER TO BE MOVED OUT OF THE "PARK" POSITION WITH THE IGNITION KEY REMOVED (OR IN THE "LOCK" POSITION). THIS CAN ALSO ALLOW THE IGNITION KEY TO BE REMOVED WHEN THE SHIFTER HAS NOT BEEN PLACED IN THE "PARK" POSITION.
- Consequence: EITHER OF THESE CONDITIONS COULD ALLOW THE VEHICLE TO ROLL AWAY CAUSING A CRASH WITHOUT WARNING.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE GEARSHIFT BLOCKER AND BRACKET ASSEMBLY FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING JANUARY 2008. OWNERS MAY CONTACT CHRYSLER AT 1-800-853-1403.
- Manufacturer: DAIMLERCHRYSLER CORPORATION
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: ON CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH FRONT BENCH SEATS ONLY, IF FLUID IS SPILLED FROM THE FLOOR MOUNTED CUP HOLDER, AN UNUSED CONSOLE POWER OUTLET CONNECTOR LOCATED UNDER THE SEAT MAY BECOME CONTAMINATED.
- Consequence: THIS MAY ALLOW DEVELOPMENT OF A HIGH RESISTIVE SHORT CIRCUIT IN THE CONNECTOR, WHICH COULD EVENTUALLY LEAD TO A FIRE.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL INSPECT THE CONSOLE WIRING CONNECTOR FOR CORROSION, CLEAN AS REQUIRED, AND INSTALL A CAP TO PREVENT ADDITIONAL FLUID FROM CONTAMINATING THE CONNECTOR FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON OCTOBER 30, 2006. OWNERS MAY CONTACT DAIMLER CHRYSLER AT 1-800-853-1403.
- Manufacturer: K&N ENGINEERING, INC.

ALSO, A SMALL PERCENTAGE OF THESE KITS WERE SOLD UNDER THE MOPAR PERFORMANCE PARTS BRAND NAME (P/NOS. P5007069 AND P5007070). ALL KITS WERE MANUFACTURED FROM APRIL 20, 1999, THROUGH SEPTEMBER 23, 2004. THESE ASSEMBLIES WERE MANUFACTURED AS REPLACEMENT EQUIPMENT FOR CERTAIN DODGE PICKUP TRUCKS AND SUVS. A SMALL PIECE OF MATERIAL FROM THE TUBE WALL COULD BE SUCKED INTO THE ENGINE THROTTLE BODY, WHICH COULD CAUSE THE THROTTLE TO BECOME JAMMED IN THE OPEN POSITION.
- Consequence: A JAMMED OPEN THROTTLE COULD CAUSE UNINTENDED ACCELERATION OF THE VEHICLE, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN A CRASH OR INCREASED STOPING DISTANCES WHEN BRAKING.
- Remedy: K&N WILL PROVIDE OWNERS WITH A FREE REPAIR KIT ALONG WITH REPAIR INSTRUCTIONS. THE RECALL BEGAN ON APRIL 20, 2006.
- Manufacturer: DAIMLERCHRYSLER CORPORATION
- Components: SUSPENSION:FRONT:CONTROL ARM:UPPER BALL JOINT
- Summary: ON CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES AND PICKUP TRUCKS EQUIPPED WITH FOUR-WHEEL DRIVE (4X4), IF MOISTURE LEAKS INTO THE FRONT SUSPENSION UPPER BALL JOINT, EVACUATION OF THE LUBRICANT AND CORROSION OF THE JOINT MAY CAUSE THE JOINT TO WEAR OVER AN EXTENDED PERIOD OF TIME. THIS COULD CAUSE A CLUNKING NOISE IN THE FRONT SUSPENSION, WHICH MAY NOT ALWAYS BE HEARD BY THE VEHICLE OCCUPANTS.
- Consequence: EXCESSIVE WEAR IN THE UPPER BALL JOINT MAY ALLOW IT TO SEPARATE, WHICH COULD RESULT IN LOSS OF CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FRONT SUSPENSION UPPER BALL JOINTS. THIS SAFETY IMPROVEMENT CAMPAIGN BEGAN ON DECEMBER 21, 2004. OWNERS CAN CONTACT DAIMLERCHRYSLER AT 1-800-853-1403.

- Summary: ON CERTAIN PICKUP TRUCKS AND SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES, THE WINDSHIELD WIPER MODULE MOTOR MAY BE SUSCEPTIBLE TO WATER INTRUSION THAT COULD CAUSE INTERNAL CORROSION AND RESULT IN PARTIAL OR COMPLETE LOSS OF FRONT WINDSHIELD WIPING CAPABILITY.
- Consequence: DRIVER VISIBILITY COULD BE REDUCED, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A CRASH.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE FRONT WINDSHIELD WIPER MODULE. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN ON JULY 12, 2004. OWNERS SHOULD CONTACT DAIMLERCHRYSLER AT 1-800-853-1403.
Negative 2002 Dodge Durango car reviews
Positive 2002 Dodge Durango car reviews

Hello! I just wanted to share my positive experience with my 02 Durango. I've had it since 2003 and it's been great to me! Although I'm currently looking to trade it in, I've only had a few minor issues. One time, the module that controls all the lights in the truck went out, but thankfully it was still under warranty. Although the specific part wasn't covered, I spoke with the dealership and they kindly paid for it. I was surprised to read so many negative reviews about Durangos, as my experience has been quite the opposite!

I just traded in my 98' SLT for the R/T and I am amazed by the difference between the two! If I didn't know any better, I would think I was driving a sports car. It seems that this bad boy solved all the problems of the old SLT. I no longer have the constant problems with my rear brakes and I don't squeal around corners or break the rear end loose on turns. Well done!

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with our SUV. We bought it with 90,000 miles on it and I was a bit worried about the mileage, but after 2 years, we have had no issues at all. Our Durango now has 123,000 miles and still looks and drives like new. The cost to operate it has been normal, mostly just tires and oil changes, with some preventive maintenance. Living in upstate NY, the winters can be harsh, but the 4x4 has been a lifesaver. We only use it when we need to, but it's great to have that option. With a family of 6, we were tired of the minivan and this SUV has been a great replacement. We love it so much that we will never go back. Once you drive it in the winter, you won't want anything else. We have taken this SUV everywhere and it has never let us down.
-
Durango has good pick up and engine power when needed. It handles quite well and is compact enough to fit in tight places. The interior is somewhat compact, but the fold down seats are a plus. With the third row, it can seat 7-8 passengers.

We purchased our Durango with 126,000 miles on it. Although it needed some work, we were happy to take on the challenge. We replaced the transmission, heater hose, upper and lower radiator hoses, radiator, and thermostat. We also replaced the front brakes, power booster, master cylinder, and a wheel hub. Although we still have some issues with the heater, we are confident that we can resolve them. Despite some minor problems, we are optimistic that our Durango will last us for years to come!

I love my Durango! Your 99 SLT with the 5.9 is such a smooth and comfortable ride. The power always seems to be on tap, especially when cruising around 55mph. The only issue I've had was an oil leak problem at 25k miles (which has been fixed), but thankfully I haven't had any other problems beyond that.

I bought my Durango for 9 g's with 32000 miles and had no problems for the first 30000 miles. However, at 60000 miles, it started falling apart. Unfortunately, the window regulators are constantly breaking and I had an overheating problem at 70000 miles while towing 2000 pounds (and that's a maybe). I didn't think it was a big deal at first, but even after changing out the cooling system, it still overheated and the heads were blown. Although I loved this car until now, it's time to move on. I have decided to avoid buying any more Dodge gas vehicles and will consider their diesel options instead.

I had a negative experience with my first Dodge car and it has left me with a negative impression of the brand. Unfortunately, as I approached 100K, several mechanical issues arose such as the AC pump, transmission governor and governor solenoid, and the brake interlock solenoid. While I can understand the need to replace the AC pump and interlock solenoid, I was disappointed that the powertrain warranty did not cover an essential part of the transmission. Additionally, the interlock solenoid can only be fixed by replacing the entire steering column as the part is not offered separately. Unfortunately, once these parts start to fail, they tend to continue to do so. The cost of parts is also quite high, making this car a less than ideal purchase.

Overall, I'm glad with the vehicle. It's enjoyable to drive, has sufficient power, looks great, and is easy to handle. The controls are all within reach, and the sound system is good. However, there are a few issues. The AC could be better, especially in hot weather like we have here in PHX. It struggles to cool the car even after an hour of driving. Additionally, the car occasionally slips out of gear, and it can be a bit slow to start on cold mornings (although cold is relative in PHX).

The gas mileage is unsatisfactory. Additionally, the vehicle produced excessive noise after only 25,000 miles.
