2017 Dodge Durango problems
The Dodge Durango is a mid-size/full-size SUV produced by Dodge starting with the 1998 model year. The first two generations were very similar in that both were based on the Dodge Dakota and Dodge Ram, both featured a body-on-frame construction and both were produced at the Newark Assembly Plant in Newark, Delaware through the 2009 model year.
The third-generation Durango began with the 2011 model year. It is built on the same platform as the Jeep Grand Cherokee, features unibody construction, and has been assembled at the Jefferson North Assembly Plant in Detroit, Michigan since late 2010.
Each generation had options for different engine sizes and power ratings, with different transmissions also. In 2009 a hybrid variant was introduced, but ended quickly with the second generation Durango. From 2007 to 2009 the Durango was available as the Chrysler Aspen from Chrysler. Over two million Durangos have been sold since it was introduced in 1998.

Common 2017 Dodge Durango problems
Based on complaints from owners of the 2017 Dodge Durango, several common problems have been reported:
- Door Locks Failing: A widespread complaint among 2017 Durango owners is the failure of door locks, typically occurring around 45,000 miles. This issue involves problems with both the door lock actuators and the control module. Replacing the actuators costs approximately $150 per door, while the control module replacement is around $600.
- Numerous Warning Lights on the Dash: Some owners have reported multiple warning lights appearing on the dashboard at around 20,000 miles. This issue can often be resolved by replacing the body ground on the battery, which costs around $150. Poor grounding can lead to system failures, causing these warning lights to illuminate.
- Water Getting into the Tail Lights: Another common problem is water ingress into the tail lights, reported by owners at approximately 10,000 miles. This issue is attributed to failing seals on the lights, allowing water to enter during rain or washing. Replacing the tail lights can cost around $350 per light, depending on local labor rates.
- Recalls: The 2017 Dodge Durango has two recalls. The more serious recall is for a half-shaft separation, which can increase the risk of a crash. Dodge offers free replacement of the affected half shafts. The second recall is related to the cruise control system, which cannot be canceled. Dodge provides free software updates to address this issue.
These problems highlight some common issues faced by owners of the 2017 Dodge Durango, ranging from door lock failures to warning light malfunctions and water ingress into the tail lights. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-11-04
- VIN: 1C4RDJAG8HC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: We have had engine issues since the first couples months of having this car, the engine has been replaced 2 times, and now tipm and start/stop is having issues, this car needs to be recalled
FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-07-22
- VIN: 1C4RDJEG3HC
- Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Vehicle would not fill up with fuel. Took to dealership, dealership quoted $2700 to fix the issue. Issue was stated as fuel had entered the evap canister (somehow) and would need to be replaced and because this needed to be replaced the fuel tank needed to be replaced as well. 10 days later I received a bill for $2700 for a replaced tank and cannister with no real explanation as to why it happened. After reading on NHTSA, this seems to be a more than "random" occurrence with this vehicle and needs to be updated to a manufacture defect/recall. Customers should not be paying for a defect directly from the factory. Especially when said defect is costing customers $2000+. Additionally, with the exposed risk of gasoline spewing out of the fill nozzle on to owners, this poses a serious threat to health and safety of the environment and owners of these vehicles. Not to mention the fueling stations as well.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-06-03
- VIN: 1C4SDJCT3HC
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
- Summary: Engine cut off while driving down the interstate, traffic was moderate and thankfully made it to the side of the road. After about 20 min, the engine started. Seemed like a lack of fuel. Replaced the fuel pump and it ran fine for about a week and then while fueling it at the gas station, it wouldn't start again. After about 20 min, it started. While dropping the fuel tank, I noticed the connector that is located to the rear of the fuel tank on the passenger side and the main wire for the fuel pump was melted in the connector. It was evident that there was significant heat on that pin and I am in the process of repairing the wiring as well as the connector. This is a known issue in previous models, obviously it is not a issue for Chrysler to fix it until someone is killed in an accident.,

STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-10-20
- VIN: 1C4SDJCTXHC
- Components: STEERING,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Lost power steering after I started vehicle after driving. It happens to remove power steering unavailable code after restarting vehicle several times and power steering returns. I believe it may be something with ABS as the ECU and EPS is all connected. If something is off then it goes into limp mode. ABS was resetted and worked fine and not needing to replace the entire electric power steering. All started when I had 88K miles. One time the steering wheel locked on me while I was driving over a bridge with snow and ice on ground.

- VIN: 1C4SDJCT3HC
- Components: SEATS
- Summary: On [XXX] 2024 my wife, son, and I were sitting at a stop light on [XXX] at approximately 16:40 hours when we heard a loud pop in the vehicle and my wife's head was pushed forward by the passenger side seat head rest, causing pain to my wife's head and neck, and shoulder muscles. Upon inspection of the head rest, it had become separated in the middle (pictures attached). Vehicle is equipped with the active head restraint system. My wife has not received medical attention yet but is quite sore this morning. We will contact our dealer to replace the head rest (and the driver's side head rest) and request the defective head rest be returned to us so it is available for NHTSA inspection. The vehicle has not yet been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance rep, or others yet. There were no warning lamps, messages, or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure. This happened suddenly without any warning while we were stopped at a traffic light. Our safety was put at risk by the sudden failure and violent expansion to the head rest causing pain to my wife. Had this occurred on the driver's side while the vehicle was in motion, it could have caused a motor vehicle crash resulting in severe injury, property damage, or even death. - Summary: Water has been collecting in the right hand side of my racetrack taillight on my 2017 Durango causing my entire strip to burn out completely. It seems as though debris and bugs have also made their way into the tail light as both are visible and trapped within the light assembly. The taillight flickers upon starting the car and then completely stops working. I attempted to dry the light out by removing it, getting all condensation and collected water out, sealing up the parts that were weeping and cleaning up the gaskets that had weak spots but the entire assembly seems to have totally failed. This car has had no rear end damage and nothing happened that would have compromised the unit to cause this issue.

If you're in the market for a stylish SUV with a bit of a race car feel, the Durango R/T might just be the perfect fit for you. Its dual tailpipe exhaust system produces a satisfying roar that gets even louder and more race car-like in Sport Mode. The 5.7-liter Hemi engine, which boasts 360-365 HP, is incredibly responsive and sounds incredible in Sport Mode, while also being a practical daily driver in eco mode. The Durango offers ample space for both cargo and passengers, making it a great choice for families and those who need to haul things around. Despite its size, it's not unwieldy like some larger SUVs, nor is it too small like some compact ones. With its muscle car-inspired interior and styling, the Durango is an exciting and fun vehicle to drive, thanks in no small part to the acceleration of the 5.7-liter Hemi. Why not take it for a spin and see for yourself?

I've always loved my old 2000 Durango and it was time to purchase a new one. After reviewing all mid-size SUVs, I decided to stick with the Durango. Although it took a little getting used to all the new technology, it has been a lot of fun! I have read reviews that suggest the acceleration of the Durango is not as good as other SUVs due to its weight, but I have not noticed any issues and have no concerns. The comfort and spacious seats are sure to impress. I highly recommend it!

I have found this car to be perfect for me.

Everything you could ask for in a car. We love it. Had a Journey before and loved it also.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my Durango. When I first bought it used in 2020, it was 3 years old and I absolutely loved it! It was the perfect size for my 2 kids and 3 dogs. However, recently I've had some trouble with it. Unfortunately, the head gasket blew and my local mechanic said that this has been a common issue with this engine. I checked the power train warranty, which is 5 years or 60K miles, but my Durango is now 6 years old and has 80K miles, so I had to pay $4400 to fix it. With the current market being so crazy for vehicle purchases, I've decided to start looking for a new one. I'm a bit hesitant to purchase another Durango, as I still owe a decent amount of money on this one and I'm worried about what else might start breaking. I just wanted to share my experience and remind everyone to be aware of their warranty when purchasing a vehicle.

The lifters began clattering at 30000 miles, and despite changing them four times, the issue persisted. Eventually, the decision was made to replace the entire motor. It is important to note that at 30000 miles, valves may begin to clatter again. However, I remain confident in my ability to address any issues that may arise and will continue to trust in the quality of Dodge vehicles.

The SUV has some areas that could be improved, such as gas mileage, road noise, and ride stiffness. Additionally, the cabin can be quite noisy and the interior is not the highest quality. However, there are many great SUV options available, including the Honda Pilot.
