The Dodge Durango is a mid-size/full-size SUV produced by Dodge starting with the 1998 model year. The first two generations were very similar in that both were based on the Dodge Dakota and Dodge Ram, both featured a body-on-frame construction and both were produced at the Newark Assembly Plant in Newark, Delaware through the 2009 model year.

The third-generation Durango began with the 2011 model year. It is built on the same platform as the Jeep Grand Cherokee, features unibody construction, and has been assembled at the Jefferson North Assembly Plant in Detroit, Michigan since late 2010.

Each generation had options for different engine sizes and power ratings, with different transmissions also. In 2009 a hybrid variant was introduced, but ended quickly with the second generation Durango. From 2007 to 2009 the Durango was available as the Chrysler Aspen from Chrysler. Over two million Durangos have been sold since it was introduced in 1998.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-11
  • VIN: 1C4SDHCT7DC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: 2012 Durango. While driving, Battery symbol appeared on dash. I immediately started to pull over , by the time i got to a safe area, there was smoke coming from under the hood. I opened it and saw smoke coming directly from the alternator. After the smoke dissipated, i tried to turn on the vehicle and it would not start. I towed the vehicle home, changed the alternator and the battery with new items from Autozone, and the vehicle still would not start. There were no codes popping up as well. Towed it to the dealership and it turned out that it fried the ECM. Why wouldnt there be a fuse or something to protect the computer from a surge off of the alternator. Well, the dealer changed out the computer and with intermittent issues afterwards, the car would not start all the time. thought the starter was going bad. Changed that and it was still having issues, not starting. took it back to the dealership. after the dealership replaced the starter (to verify that it wasnt the issue), it turns out the TIPM is partially burnt out. So the alternator broke both computers.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-10-21
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: 1C4SDJCT2DC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: While driving on the highway last night, my husband smelled smoke and then his eyes began to burn. As he was about to pull over, a flame fell from the passenger sun visor! There was more smoke and fire as he pulled over. The car became engulfed in flames fairly quickly. Thankfully he was alone without other family members (or our dog) and he was able to get out safely. He had to stand on the side of the highway waiting for responders. It was towed and we are in the process of speaking with insurance and figuring out what to do next. Today we researched Dodge Durango car fire and came across the recall from 2014 which SPECIFICALLY said passenger sun visor fire hazard! Clearly that is exactly what happened. We have proof that we brought the vehicle to the dealership in 2014 to complete this recall. However it appears based on internet searches that this was still an issue even after recalls were performed. There were no warnings/messages prior to the failure.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-01
  • VIN: 1C4RDHDG6DC
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: My 2013 Durango with 124,000 miles has a check engine light on, that indicates cylinder 4 miss fire. The Airpark Dodge service department where I purchased the vehicle has done a diagnostic evaluation and determined that the left cylinder head needs replacing. That falls within the X56 engine left cylinder head extended warranty for some VIN # vehicles, but not mine. The estimated repair is over $5000.00. I am told that the engine can cease up while driving, and that I should not be driving the vehicle. I think my vehicle should be included, especially since this X56 warranty extension has been out since 2014. How do I get this X56 warranty on my vehicle? And how do I get reimbursed for the cost of the repair?

SEATS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-25
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • VIN: 1C4RDJEG5DC
  • Components: SEATS
  • Summary: What component or system failed or malfunctioned, and is it available for inspection upon request? The passenger Active Head Restraints (AHR) deployed for no reason. I was sitting in in the passenger side seat talking to my wife, in the driveway, when the AHR deployed without cause. The head restraint struck me on the back left side of head with force. My neck is starting to stiffen up. Yes it is available for inspection. I will send pictures. How was your safety or the safety of others put at risk? The force generated during the deployment of an Active Head Restraint (AHR) system is significant, I know because I was hit on the back of the my head thankfully I was not driving. My safety concern is two fold, one injury from AHR deploying inadvertently and elderly person might be at more risk for this type of injury. Two, AHR deploys striking driver while the car is in motion causing an accident. Also, this might be related to an open investigation by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA Action Number: PE19014) Has the problem been reproduced or confirmed by a dealer or independent service center? No Has the vehicle or component been inspected by the manufacturer, police, insurance representatives or others? No Were there any warning lamps, messages or other symptoms of the problem prior to the failure, and when did they first appear? No

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-18
  • VIN: 1C4SDJDT9DC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Red battery symbol lit up on the dashboard Noticed electrical burning smell. Stopped and turned car off. Checked around and under hood. Battery symbol went off so I drove short distance back home. Noticed loud whining noise, looked like the start of an electrical fire inside alternator and lots of smoke. Quickly turned car off. My alternator part number matches alternators that are part of a T36 recall involving defective alternators, but for some reason my VIN is not included in the “VIN range” even though my year make and model is. It is the same defective part, which failed, and could cause damage to other parts. The alternator and whatever parts that were damaged should be covered under the recall. This part almost caused my car to catch on fire. Luckily I was home. But what if I was on the road in traffic with my kids in the car.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-16
  • VIN: 1C4RDHAG2DC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
  • Summary: The engine in my vehicle stalls without warning while driving, which poses a significant safety risk, particularly on busy roadways where it could lead to accidents, endangering both myself and other drivers. The issue has been reproduced and confirmed in the past by a certified Dodge dealership auto shop, and the vehicle is available for inspection upon request. However, the vehicle or its components have not been inspected by the manufacturer, police, or insurance representatives. Before the engine stalls, the electronic throttle control lamp flashes, the vehicle gives a noticeable jerk, and then the engine shuts down. This problem occurs at any speed but has not happened when the vehicle is at a full stop.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-07
  • VIN: 1C4RDHAG7DC
  • Components: FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: The Durango showed no signs of a check engine light prior to. I called out a professional (AAA) to see what was going on and he said the there is no fuel going from the tank to crank the car. As if I was out of gas. SEATS PROBLEM

  • VIN: 1C4RDHAG5DC

SEATS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-28
  • VIN: 1C4RDJAG9DC
  • Components: SEATS
  • Summary: While causally driving down the road, without warning, the passenger headrest on my 2013 Dodge Durango violently "exploded" forward. Thankfully, my son who was riding in the passenger seat, was sleeping with his head bent forward so it didn't hit him. Upon inspection (by myself), the active head restraint feature is held together by PLASTIC, which obviously failed. I searched on the internet and this appears to be a common problem, and each time it's due to this plastic clip failing. This is totally unacceptable. I have the headrest available for inspection. It was brought to the dealer who wants $950 to replace it. They said the warranty expired less than a year ago. Again based on internet research, apparently Dodge/Chysler just recently extended the warranty to 10 years for 2014 models (and possibly 2013?). How convenient to extend a warranty short of the period covered. Not only shouldn't I be responsible for the cost of replacement for such a dangerous feature, but what happens when I'm driving and the driver's side suddenly fails and I'm violently hit in the back of the head and swerve into on-coming traffic? Ironic that these "active head restraint" features are causing injuries instead of preventing them. These headreasts need to be recalled IMMEDIATELY before more people are injured or killed.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-01-04
  • VIN: 1C4SDJET8DC
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The recall that was done on 1/4/21 for a fuel pump relay on this vehicle has not been properly working since it was installed. Have had problems with a no start would just crank and it might start on the 3 or 4 try took to the dealers and even towed there once. Kept telling them that this problem started after this recall of the fuel pump relay. Gas mileage also went down. When taken in and even towed to dealership there was no codes for anything except battery was dead from the cranking trying to start the motor. after they got the battery charged it didn't do it for them so no codes for them to see. It would do it sometimes and then wouldn't do it. If you was out and about you might get stranded. Called Detroit the Dodge makers and was told that they wasn't going to do anything about it since it was out of warranty you only have a 2 years warranty on a recall part. But when they keep saying it's all done right. What does a consumer have to do to get it fixed properly!

Our Dodge Durango Citadel is a beautiful car and we have enjoyed its comfort and performance immensely. However, we have experienced some issues with recalls that are currently affecting our vehicle. Unfortunately, the dealership has informed us that they do not have the necessary parts to fix the problem at this time. We understand that this can be frustrating, especially when owning a vehicle of this value. We hope that Dodge will address these issues promptly and efficiently to ensure the safety and satisfaction of their customers. Thank you for your understanding.

I recently had to bring my 2013 Dodge Durango, which is a 4-year-old vehicle, to the dealership for repairs. Unfortunately, I was disappointed with the quality of materials and workmanship on my vehicle. Over the last 30 days, I had to spend over $2,000 in repairs on my vehicle for materials that should not have gone bad in just 4 years of vehicle ownership. I had to replace the heater blower, trans-cooler, and power steering cooler & hoses. While this was a frustrating experience, I am hopeful that Dodge/Chrysler will take responsibility for the poor quality and workmanship of my vehicle. I had $1,100 in repairs on non-routine maintenance performed on my vehicle last year, which was also disappointing. However, I am confident that Dodge/Chrysler will work to improve their product quality, workmanship, and customer service. I believe that Dodge/Chrysler can do better and I hope that they will take steps to improve their vehicles in the future.

The 2013 Durango I purchased in September 2022 unfortunately experienced some issues that required me to take it back to the dealer twice. However, in March 2023, the vehicle unexpectedly powered down while I was on the highway and subsequently caught fire while I was inside, resulting in a total loss. Based on my personal experience, I would not recommend purchasing a Durango, particularly an older model.

I loved the space and power my Durango had, however it had major electrical issues. Unfortunately, no one knew how to repair it. The power would flicker off and back on during night drives, along with the air. It didn't feel safe.

The car had several small recalls and the A/C stopped working after three years of purchase in Michigan due to a clean cut in the main tube. Despite the manufacturer's refusal to cover the cost and the poor service at the dealership, I took the car to an A/C certified mechanic who was knowledgeable about Dodge. The mechanic explained that the main A/C tube was located near the transmission metal shield, which could have caused corrosion due to salt and snow on the road or metal vibration. As a result, I believe that this is a defect, as I have never experienced any A/C issues with any other car before.

I traded in my 2005 Magnum R/T reluctantly as we needed more room (3rd Row) and the AWD reliability living in Boston for a used 2013 Durango R/T(54,000miles). It's my Maggy with road clearance and AWD! I love the interior; it's very roomy for a wider guy and has plenty of legroom for the rear passengers as well. I've had it for just over a year and have had no major problems (fingers crossed). I even took it for a GT of mid America (Boston to Missouri and back) 3000+ mile round trip, and it performed flawlessly! I even got 28 MPG's on the way home! Not even kidding- I took a picture of it if you don't believe me! I don't get nearly that tooling around town @ 7.5-10 MPGs per week. The pick-up is great, but my only real complaint is the transmission. It never seems to be in the right gear when I accelerate. It will bog down then kind of struggle for a second looking or figuring out which gear to go to, then the tach jumps and the engine revs with even a little pressure on the gas. I think it's too many gears for the truck. But other than that, it's been everything I wanted it to be. Still a Mopar Guy!

If you're not too concerned about gas mileage, we highly recommend going for the 5.7 hemi.

  3. Raven Bartell 2024-11-17

Your Durango Citadel is actually equipped with a 5.7 V8 Hemi, which is the same motor as the SXT V8 5.7. However, the Citadel is a luxury version that comes with additional features such as a heated steering wheel, heated seats in the front and back, air-conditioned seats, and a DVD player. It's packed with all the extra amenities and more.

  4. Jayme Boyer 2024-09-04

I love my Durango! It has every option available and my kids love it. There are ample USB ports, storage, and an outlet for plugging in chargers. Although the speakers are not top quality and the navigation is less than impressive and hard to use, the power of the hemi is worth every penny. The ride in the 2nd and 3rd row seats is a bit rough and the seats are stiff, but the sleek style and blacktop package match my personality and demand attention. It's definitely one hot ride for one hot mom!

Hi there! I noticed that you're a previous owner of a Chrysler Aspen and I wanted to let you know that this vehicle is comparable. I understand that you had some trouble with the lifters on the 6 cylinder motor at 75,000 miles and that must have been frustrating. Is there anything else I can help you with?
