2000 Dodge Durango problems
The Dodge Durango is a mid-size/full-size SUV produced by Dodge starting with the 1998 model year. The first two generations were very similar in that both were based on the Dodge Dakota and Dodge Ram, both featured a body-on-frame construction and both were produced at the Newark Assembly Plant in Newark, Delaware through the 2009 model year.
The third-generation Durango began with the 2011 model year. It is built on the same platform as the Jeep Grand Cherokee, features unibody construction, and has been assembled at the Jefferson North Assembly Plant in Detroit, Michigan since late 2010.
Each generation had options for different engine sizes and power ratings, with different transmissions also. In 2009 a hybrid variant was introduced, but ended quickly with the second generation Durango. From 2007 to 2009 the Durango was available as the Chrysler Aspen from Chrysler. Over two million Durangos have been sold since it was introduced in 1998.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC),ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-02-01
- VIN: 1B4HR28Z2YF
- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC),ENGINE
- Summary: CAR GIVEN TO ME BY A FAMILY MEMBER IN NOV 2019 WITH 135K MILES, WAS THE ORIGINAL OWNER, VEHICLE WAS VERY WELL MAINTAINED. APPROXIMATELY FEB 2020, DRIVING 70 MPH DOWN INTERSTATE, CAR ACTED LIKE IT DIED-LOST ALL POWER FOR ABOUT 10 SECS, THEN IT CAME BACK TO LIFE. IT WAS ABOUT A MONTH LATER, IT DID IT AGAIN. MECHANIC REPLACED THROTTLE BODY POSITION SENSOR(?). SOON AFTER, VEHICLE STARTED TO JUST DIE WHILE DRIVING. NO NOISE, RATTLES, NO CHECK ENGINE LIGHTS, JUST WOULD SHUT OFF LIKE THE KEY WAS TURNED OFF. DIDN'T MATTER THE TERRAIN OR SPEED, JUST WHILE DRIVING. INITIALLY IT WOULD IMMEDIATELY RESTART. IT SEEMS TO HAVE GOTTEN WORSE SINCE THE HOTTER WEATHER. AND IT SHUTS DOWN AFTER DRIVING ABOUT 20 MINS WHEN THE ENGINE HAS REALLY WARMED UP. I FINALLY NOTICED A NO BUS MESSAGE ON THE ODOMETER-WHICH FROM RESEARCHING MEANS THE COMPUTER ISN'T COMMUNICATING. MECHANIC UNABLE TO PULL A CODE, SAID IT'S CLEARING ITSELF OUT RIGHT AFTER IT THROWS IT. TODAY WENT IN, AND WE GOT LUCKY AND HOOKED MACHINE WHILE CAR WAS RUNNING AND IT DIED. AND THE SCANNER WOULD NOT RECOGNIZE NOR COMMUNICATE WITH THE PCM. NUMEROUS ISSUES WITH DODGE/CHRYSLER VEHICLES FOR THIS EXACT SAME PROBLEM. AND IT DOESN'T SEEM TO HAVE A SINGLE FIX FOR IT. SOME A NEW PCM WORKED, SOME OTHER SENSORS, ONE SAID JUST LOOSENING THE SCREWS ON THE PCM WORKED FOR HIM, SOME NOTHING WORKED. THIS IS SO DANGEROUS, CAR JUST SHUTTING OFF WITHOUT WARNING WHILE YOU'RE DRIVING. I CAN NOT BELIEVE THIS HASN'T BEEN A RECALL ISSUE AFTER 20 YEARS. I SEE A LOT OF THIS MODEL OF VEHICLE ON THE ROAD STILL, BUT IT DOESN'T SEEM LIMITED TO JUST THE DURANGOS EITHER. IT ALMOST SEEMS AS IF SOMETHING NEAR THE PCM OR THE WIRES TO IT ARE GETTING TOO HOT AND CAUSING AN ISSUE OR EVEN BURNING OUT THE PCM. DID A RESET BY UNHOOKING BATTERY CABLE, AND THE CAR RESTARTED THIS LAST TIME. THIS IS DANGEROUS FOR EVERYONE.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2015-08-03
- VIN: 1B4HS28Z2YF
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,ENGINE
- Summary: I PURCHASED A 2000 DODGE DURANGO USED AT 147K MILES IN NOVEMBER 2014. BY MARCH 2015, IT TURNED OFF RANDOMLY WHILE I WAS DRIVING, MULTIPLE TIMES OVER THE COURSE OF 6 MONTHS. THE SPEED DIDN'T MATTER. AFTER SEEING 2 MECHANICS, THEY SENT ME TO AN ELECTRICAL SPECIALIST WHO DETERMINED IT WAS MY PCM. I REPLACED IT 3 TIMES, AND THE SECOND ONE SENT TO ME HAD HOLES DRILLED IN IT THEN FILLED WITH SILICONE. THAT ONE WORKED THE LEAST. APPARENTLY, THE PCM WAS REPLACED ONCE BEFORE I PURCHASED IT. WHEN I GOT THE THIRD ONE IN, IT SEEMED TO CORRECT THE ISSUE. HOW IS THE ENGINE SHUTTING OFF RANDOMLY NOT A RECALL ISSUE? WHAT IF IT SHUT OFF WHILE I WAS DRIVING DOWN THE HIGHWAY AT 65MPH? WHAT IF THERE WAS NO GOOD PLACE TO PULL OVER, AND WITH NO POWER STEERING I MIGHT ADD? I HAD MY KID IN THE CAR WITH ME MOST OF THE TIME.

- Summary: HEAD GASKET LEAK CREATED A HEATER CORE ISSUE WHERE COOLANT WOULD "MIST" THROUGH THE VENTS. THIS POSED A HEALTH RISK TO MY CHILDREN AND I WHO HAVE ASTHMA. AND THERE'S NO TELLING THE LONG TERM EFFECTS OF INHALING COOLANT MIST. DUE TO COST, WE HAD TO REROUTE THE HEATER CORE, THUS DISABLING IT AND GOING WITHOUT HEAT AND DEFROST DURING THE WINTER MONTHS. SINCE THEN, THE GASKET ISSUE IS NOW CAUSING EVEN MORE ISSUES OF SMOKING UNDER THE HOOD, SMOKE OUT THE TAIL PIPE, AND COOLANT OVERHEATING. IT IS MY UNDERSTANDING HEAD GASKETS ARE A COMMON PROBLEM WITH DURANGOS. IT'S ABOUT TIME THEY ISSUE A RECALL AND FIX IT. I'M GREATLY CONCERNED ABOUT MY CHILDREN'S HEALTH AND SAFETY, PLUS THE ENVIRONMENTAL IMPACT FROM THE EMISSIONS CHANGE DUE TO THE GASKET.
2000 Dodge Durango recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 4 recalls for different components of the 2000 Dodge Durango.
- Manufacturer: SKF USA, INC.
- Components: SUSPENSION:FRONT:HUB
- Summary: SKF IS RECALLING 2,805 HUB UNITS, PART NO. BR930361, SOLD AS A SERVICE PART FOR 1997-2004 DODGE DAKOTA VEHICLES AND 1999-2003 DODGE DURANGO VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH 2-WHEEL DRIVE & REAR AXLE ABS. DUE TO A SPECIFICATION ERROR, THE ROTOR PILOT FOR THE HUB UNIT MAY BE TOO LONG. THIS RESULTS IN THE WHEEL TO NOT BE SEATED FULLY AGAINST THE HUB FLANGE FACE DURING MOUNTING.
- Consequence: IMPROPER SEATING OF THE WHEEL CAN RESULT IN EXCESSIVE VIBRATION, BRAKE ROTOR NOISE, DIFFICULTY REMOVING THE WHEEL AFTER INSTALLATION AND OPERATION OF THE VEHICLE, AND POSSIBLY WHEEL-END SEPARATION DURING VEHICLE OPERATION. SHOULD WHEEL-END SEPARATION OCCUR, THE DRIVER COULD LOOSE CONTROL OF THE VEHICLE, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN A CRASH.
- Remedy: SKF WILL NOTIFY OWNERS AND REPLACE THE DEFECTIVE HUB UNITS FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON NOVEMBER 5, 2008. OWNERS MAY CONTACT SKF VSM NORTH AMERICA CUSTOMER SERVICE AT 1-800-644-8999.

A SMALL PIECE OF MATERIAL FROM THE TUBE WALL COULD BE SUCKED INTO THE ENGINE THROTTLE BODY, WHICH COULD CAUSE THE THROTTLE TO BECOME JAMMED IN THE OPEN POSITION.
- Consequence: A JAMMED OPEN THROTTLE COULD CAUSE UNINTENDED ACCELERATION OF THE VEHICLE, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN A CRASH OR INCREASED STOPING DISTANCES WHEN BRAKING.
- Remedy: K&N WILL PROVIDE OWNERS WITH A FREE REPAIR KIT ALONG WITH REPAIR INSTRUCTIONS. THE RECALL BEGAN ON APRIL 20, 2006.
- Manufacturer: DAIMLERCHRYSLER CORPORATION
- Components: SUSPENSION:FRONT:CONTROL ARM:UPPER BALL JOINT

I can tell you that I absolutely loved my Dodge Durango for a decade. It was everything I needed and more, and I was able to get great gas mileage, averaging 20 mpg on the highway. When it came time to trade it in for a newer SUV, I have to admit, I shed a few tears.
-
I wouldn't change much about my Durango. It has been a reliable vehicle that has helped my family move twice and has more than paid for itself. It can handle any load I throw at it and can safely navigate any driving conditions, even protecting us from reckless drivers. The only downside is that the new Durango looks more like a minivan.
-
Hi there! I've owned this vehicle since it was new and it now has over 73,000 miles on it. I did have one issue with an air conditioning relay, which unfortunately happened just after the warranty ended, but it was a relatively easy and affordable $250 repair. I also had to take care of the recall repair for the ball joints. Overall, I have found this vehicle to be very reliable. While the gas mileage (about 18 on the highway) could be better, it's still on the high end of what I expected for this type of vehicle. I will say that the interior components aren't the best quality and can be a bit fragile, but overall I'm very happy with my purchase.

The 2000 Dodge Durango Sport is a reliable vehicle that can last a long time with regular maintenance and upkeep. We have driven it across the west coast, the south, and the heart of the midwest, covering over 130k miles. We only encountered a few minor issues, such as the passenger side actuator ($10), drivers side windows (which required no new parts), and a slow-to-heat heater that was fixed by Firestone. Overall, we highly recommend this Dodge for anyone looking for a sturdy vehicle that can withstand wear and tear. It is a great investment that will last until the end. By the way, even after being hit, the car was still sturdy enough for my wife to drive it away.
-
Great Vehicle! It's important to remember that there's more to life than just gas mileage. When I had my Durango, I had 3 kids and the extra seat came in extremely handy for the 'She's touching me' sibling syndrome. I traded it in for a Suzuki Esteem for the gas mileage, but what a horrid mistake that was. The Durango is the best SUV out there. I never had any problems with it, and it had a great ride. I received lots of compliments on it. It's a no-brainer, go with the Durango!

Hey there! I bought this truck brand new back in 2000. It's been a reliable ride, but it's time for me to move on. I did have to replace the engine at 80,000 miles and the transmission at 102,000, but it still has that solid truck feel. Unfortunately, it's leaking fluid and I think the radiator needs some attention. The water pump also just went out, which was a bit expensive. I've decided to sell it and upgrade to a Toyota, Lexus, Honda, or anything but a Dodge! Thanks for considering it!

We've had this car for about a year and it's been good to us. The leather and suede interior is so nice! The 2nd and 3rd rows are very spacious. Although, we do wish the mpg was better. We get about 12-15 city and 15-17 hwy, which isn't very economical. Additionally, the lever to put down the 2nd row seats is too close to the plastics, making it very hard to pull and often resulting in scraped knuckles. Other than those minor issues, it's a nice family SUV. However, it's worth noting that the gas prices can be quite high.

This car is decent, but that's about it. While it may not get 25 mpg, it still has its perks. However, it doesn't handle the road as well as I would like, and it feels only average in the snow, which is one of the reasons for owning an SUV. Overall, it hasn't been a terrible experience, but I wouldn't buy it again.

We've had our Durango for about 2 years and it has only clocked 54,000 miles. Unfortunately, we've experienced some overheating issues and the head gaskets have blown. The repair cost is estimated to be between $1,100 and $1,600. While we've had some challenges, we believe that every car has its pros and cons. If you're someone who enjoys the spaciousness of a 3rd seat, this may be the perfect car for you.

The Durango has some known issues, such as engine and heater core failures. Based on my experience, I would not recommend purchasing one.
