2022 Dodge Durango problems

dodge logo

The Dodge Durango is a mid-size/full-size SUV produced by Dodge starting with the 1998 model year. The first two generations were very similar in that both were based on the Dodge Dakota and Dodge Ram, both featured a body-on-frame construction and both were produced at the Newark Assembly Plant in Newark, Delaware through the 2009 model year.

The third-generation Durango began with the 2011 model year. It is built on the same platform as the Jeep Grand Cherokee, features unibody construction, and has been assembled at the Jefferson North Assembly Plant in Detroit, Michigan since late 2010.

Each generation had options for different engine sizes and power ratings, with different transmissions also. In 2009 a hybrid variant was introduced, but ended quickly with the second generation Durango. From 2007 to 2009 the Durango was available as the Chrysler Aspen from Chrysler. Over two million Durangos have been sold since it was introduced in 1998.

Common 2022 Dodge Durango problems

The 2022 Dodge Durango has been reported to have various reliability issues, including problems with its electrical system and powertrain. Here are some of the most common issues based on complaints from owners:

  • Electronic Stability Control (ESC) Malfunctions: The ESC system in the 2021 to 2022 Durango models has been known to malfunction, leading to instability and affecting other safety features. This issue compromises the vehicle’s stability and can cause unpredictable behavior, especially in adverse driving conditions.
  • Steering Assembly Bar Failure: Failures in the steering assembly bar, which can cause loss of steering control, have been reported. This failure is hazardous as it can lead to accidents, given the loss of control while driving.
  • Cruise Control System Flaw: A significant flaw was found in the Dodge Durango cruise control system, affecting many vehicles. This error could prevent the cruise control from disengaging, causing the car to maintain or increase speed unexpectedly, a major safety concern.
  • Electrical System and Powertrain Problems: The 2022 Durango has been reported to have various issues, including problems with its electrical system and powertrain. Other concerns include engine and engine cooling, exterior lighting, service brakes, equipment, and wheels.

It's important to note that the 2022 Dodge Durango has a reliability rating of 3.5 out of 5.0, ranking it 3rd among 14 full-size SUVs. This rating indicates average ownership costs, with an average annual repair cost of $675.

In conclusion, while the 2022 Dodge Durango has some common issues, it's essential to consider the reliability rating and ownership costs when making a purchase decision. Regular maintenance and prompt repairs can also help ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-12
  • VIN: 1C4SDJGJ3NC
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: Headlight assembly’s short out causing blinkers not to work. This is for the 2021 and up Durango’s. I am on my 2nd headlight assembly replacement. I know other 2021+ Durango owners that have the same issue and I also see multiple newer Durango’s on the road with the same issue. Consumers should not have to pay out of pocket for this repair as it is apparently a common and known issue that cost thousands to fix. Dodge needs to make this right.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-12-01
  • VIN: 1C4RDHDG4NC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: We have been to the dealership multiple times about the electrical issues that we are having with the vehicle. The dealership has not been able to correct the issue so we are pursuing the lemon law. We received an offer from Dodge to buy this vehicle back but they are not being reasonable with the amount they are willing to give. We would not be going through this if it wasn’t for the electrical issues that we are having therefore we do not feel like we should be penalized for something that we cannot control. We are scared that the vehicle will catch fire due to all of the electrical issues that we have with this vehicle.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-10-31
  • VIN: 1C4SDJGJ6NC
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: My engine failed with no notice while driving on the interstate leaving me coasting under no power leading to a very unsafe situation being that was no prior warning. The engine failure was under normal highway driving speeds. The dealership said that it was a catastrophic engine failure which brings up possibly a risk of fire the vehicle only has 24K miles on the odometer so very immature failure. Note** After talking to several other Durango SRT owners several have had the same engine failure concern. I don't have total stats on this but to me there has to be a design flaw that could lead a motorist to be put in an unsafe situation. I will upload supporting documentation later.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-07
  • VIN: 1C4SDJCT5NC
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: The braking system has failed twice on my Dodge Durango in a 9 month time period. I have had to press the pedal all the way to the floor in order to get the vehicle to stop. Upon taking to the dealership, they have confirmed the failure. There were no signs, messages in the vehicle, or warning lamps that there was an issue.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-26
  • VIN: 1C4RDJDG9NC
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: The backup camera display is very bright with little or no dimming at night. Backing during the day in any scenario (trailer or not) is acceptable. The camera display being this bright at night reduces rearward visibility with the mirrors due to a loss of night vision. The bright backup camera display is especially an issue when backing a trailer at night since you must use the side mirrors (trailer blocks the camera). As with any backup camera, it has limited usefullness (for backing) with a trailer connected and therefore is not used. In order to use the mirrors, I must cover the display with something to block the light and wait until my eyes readjust to the darkness before backing up. The dealership acknowledged that my infotainment system was problematic and they replaced the infotainment system due to this and other issues. However, the same issues are still happening and when brought to the dealership again they stated I must now wait for the next update (unknown timing). They did not state whether this issue (or any of the other infotainment issues this vehicle has) would be fixed in that update. This may be an issue with my specific vehicle due to the other previous issues, as I do not know if others exhibit this or not. The date selected below is the most recent occurrence of the issue. It happens each time I need to back the trailer at night.

WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-05-12
  • VIN: 1C4RDJDG4NC
  • Components: WHEELS
  • Summary: Tire Pressure Sensors are not working properly. Every time I use the vehicle, I'm not sure if I need to pull over and check the tire pressure. The numbers are off considerably. It will not stay to adjusted tire pressure. It will randomly put out numbers for each tire The Dealer tried 3 times to fix the issue and followed a number of requested items to check from the Manufacture without success. They opened a STAR case. The case manager said it was weather related. This can't be, they are not just 1-2 pounds off, there generating random numbers. The dealer does NOT agree with the assessment. They also raised the issue to the regional engineering department. This was unsuccessful. This has been occurring a few months after I bought the car. NOTE: The pictures enclosed were all morning readings and the vehicle is garaged

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-01-17
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: 1C4RDJDG2NC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: After about 3mins of driving my vehicle I started to smell burning plastic, a couple seconds later I saw a view black squiggly lines which was smoke which made me look around. At that point I saw the USB port engulfed in flames. As I was driving I panicked and pulled over on the side of the road and looked for something to put the fire out. I thankfully had a bottle of water in my vehicle which I was able to pour over the fire to put it out. I didn’t know what to do after that as there was no available Chrysler dealership in the area I was in so I went to Firestone and asked if someone could help me because I was scared to drive it not knowing if it would ignite again and my route home requires me to get on the freeway and didn’t want to risk something happening on the freeway. The guy from Firestone removed the charger from the port for me and told me I needed to take it to the dealership. I called Chrysler corporate to make them aware and made a service appointment. Without the bottle of water in the car I don’t necessarily know that the situation would have ended this way since the damage is isolated to the port and my charger only from what I can see. I wanted to make this report so that this can be brought to the attention of Chrysler and the necessary recalls and be published to prevent this from happening to anyone else .

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-11-02
  • VIN: 1C4RDJDG5NC
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: This is a dangerous random problem. In fact has now occurred 6 times. Two separate times 08/23/22 & 10/18/22 at a parking lot, while backing up, the gear shifter lit up, locked, and could not be engaged, and it wouldn't move. Both these 2 times it could not be put in drive and after shutting off the engine, it would not restart. The vehicle was blocking access and other vehicles passage for over an hour each time. The other 3 times the vehicle was moving and it just jumped into neutral with no warning, the cluster flashed messages saying to place gear shifter in park and then back to drive and proceed to acquire service. When this happens, it requires you come to a complete stop which can be really put you in harms way. The cluster lights flashed with warning messages in all of the situations. It happened to me twice 10/24/22 after leaving the dealer on the way home, the service engine light illuminated and remained on. The dealer's service rep said multiple codes were detected by the reader. When we brought it in to the dealer the first time 10/20/22, a total of 27 malfunction codes were in the system. How can that be and not be something serious? The powertrain control module was replaced, but when it happened again 2 more times on Monday, less than 15 min. apart, that didn't fix it. Same thing occurred yesterday that occurred five other times but put us in a dangerous situation. This time we were on a busy four-lane road SR 200 A1A in a 45 mile an hour zone and the vehicle just stopped in the middle of the road lane, locked up we could not move it and it could not be pushed off the road. We were a sitting duck for oncoming traffic and several cars almost failed to stop when approaching us. We have had it less than 3 months and it only has 1700 miles. We are unsafe driving it as this happens randomly and we don't know when or where. If this happens on the interstate or a large bridge we could be killed.

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-04-23
  • VIN: 1C4RDJDG6NC
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
  • Summary: On Saturday, 04/23/2022, the Dodge Durango ran fine. I was able to back out of my driveway without incident around 12:00 PM and go to Walmart. I drove to the Sheetz gas station from Walmart and topped off the fuel tank because we wanted to take a family trip during the weekend. At 12:40 PM, I arrived back home, turned off the engine, and went inside my house to pick up my son. We entered the vehicle around 12:50 PM. I put my seatbelt on, put my foot on the brake pedal, and pushed the engine start button. Then I placed the vehicle in reverse, released the parking brake, and slowly backed my foot off the brake pedal. This time around, the vehicle did not drive backward normally like it's supposed to, but hesitated like it didn't have any power (NHTSA complaint 11461953). The engine hesitated several times, the RPMs dipped under 500 more than once, and then when I almost got to the street, the engine died, and the vehicle stalled. The transmission placed itself into the park position (AUTOMATIC PARK), and I could hear and feel the driveline clunk when the parking pawl locked the transmission. The "R" led started flashing on the gear shifter. I put my foot on the brake, and moved the lever from the "R" to the "N" position. The "N" position was still flashing, indicating that the vehicle is not really in "N". Then I pushed the engine start button to completely turn off the vehicle as the "RUN" led was flashing, but instead, the engine turned back on. Without taking the foot off the brake pedal I moved the shift lever from "N" to "R" and heard a loud clunk and even felt it. It sounded and felt like there was a lot of pressure on the parkin pawl and it got barely released. I am concerned that the vehicle stalling might have damaged the parking pawl somehow. I don't feel safe driving this vehicle. This is very difficult to reproduce as the vehicle exhibits this behaviour randomly, however I am concerned for my safety and my family's safety while traveling in this vehicle.

POWER TRAIN,ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-04-22
  • VIN: 1C4RDJDG6NC
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ENGINE
  • Summary: On Friday, 04/22/2022, at 5:30 PM, I remote-started the vehicle, and let it run for 5 minutes, then my wife and I entered the vehicle. I put my foot on the brake pedal, pushed the engine start button to unlock all vehicle functions, and put my seatbelt on. I placed the vehicle in reverse. Then I released the parking brake and backed off the brake pedal. My driveway is slightly sloped downwards towards the garage doors, around three degrees and around five degrees or less where it connects to the street. This vehicle has enough power to back out of my driveway without pushing the gas pedal while in reverse. However, the Dodge Durango in this report barely moved, then stopped, so I gave it a bit more gas. The engine kept hesitating with the RPM needle going under the 500 RPM mark several times. I managed to back it to the end of the driveway. However, the vehicle was struggling. I then put in drive and moved forward. It moved forward without any issue. I pulled up to the garage door and entirely stopped. With the foot on the brake pedal, I placed the vehicle back in reverse, and it struggled again like it didn't have any power. The RPMs dipped under 500 several times until I managed to back the vehicle out into the street. I then put it in drive, and the vehicle ran fine and didn't repeat this behavior until the next day.

Negative 2022 Dodge Durango car reviews

  1. Ross Mraz 2025-01-04

I recently purchased a Durango R/T in late March 2021. Unfortunately, I had to take it back to the dealership three times in two weeks for service right after I took delivery of it. The new Uconnect 5c 10.1 inch infotainment system has a few glitches and flaws that need to be addressed. The first issue was that the lights inside the vehicle would not power down, which ran the battery dead. However, the dealership was able to fix this issue by doing a full reset on the infotainment head unit. I had to take it back the next week two different times for more issues related to the Uconnect system. Currently, there is no traffic and weather available from the new TomTom navigation system, and there is no way to set up driver profiles. Additionally, there are multiple issues in the system saving settings for the radio, Apple CarPlay, and Bluetooth. While Dodge and FCA have acknowledged that a software update is required to fix the multitude of issues, they have not provided a specific timeline for when the update will be available. Despite these issues, I still believe that the Durango R/T is a great vehicle. However, I hope that FCA will address these issues soon to ensure that their customers have the best possible experience. Thank you for your attention to this matter.

  2. Salvatore Mraz 2024-11-24

I purchased a 2018 Third Durango (RT/AWD) and unfortunately it was totaled just three months after purchase due to someone pulling out in front of me. However, I remained determined to find the perfect vehicle and upgraded to a 2019 model. Despite my efforts, it did not have enough amenities for my liking, so I decided to trade it in for a 2021 RT. Unfortunately, it has been at the dealership since 1/26 and there is no sign of it being returned anytime soon. This is my fourth return to the dealership for Uconnect Box service and I have had a star case manager since October. After a long wait, the engineers finally approved a replacement, but both ordered replacements have failed. Despite the challenges, I remain confident that the dealership and case manager will work together to resolve the issue. It is worth noting that my model trim is not listed in the drop-down for vehicle details, but I am confident that the dealership will be able to assist me with any questions or concerns I may have regarding my 2021 RT 4dr 3.6 6cyl.

  3. Thurman Bahringer 2024-10-19

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share an experience I had today on the 401 with my Durango rt 2021 model. Unfortunately, I started experiencing some problems with a loud humming sound coming from the front portion of the truck. At first, I thought it was just the road, but the noise kept getting louder. When I got home 120km later, I noticed that the back end window and bumper had an oily and dusty feeling to them. I pulled over many times to check under the hood and under the vehicle, but I couldn't find anything wrong. I wasn't sure if it was smoke or dust coming from the back when I pulled over. Have you ever experienced anything like this before?

  4. Camron Hettinger 2024-10-03

Our 2021 Dodge Durango had some issues, such as a malfunctioning touch screen and a loose door handle cover. However, we confidently took it into the shop and had the problems resolved quickly.

  5. Efren Cummings 2024-09-29

We purchased a 2021 GT Durango for our family two weeks ago. Unfortunately, we have experienced some issues with the motor shutting off unexpectedly in the middle of the street on two separate occasions in a single day. Despite taking it to the dealer, they were unable to identify any problems. We are confident that the issue will be resolved soon and we look forward to enjoying our new vehicle without any further complications.
