2021 Dodge Durango problems

dodge logo

The Dodge Durango is a mid-size/full-size SUV produced by Dodge starting with the 1998 model year. The first two generations were very similar in that both were based on the Dodge Dakota and Dodge Ram, both featured a body-on-frame construction and both were produced at the Newark Assembly Plant in Newark, Delaware through the 2009 model year.

The third-generation Durango began with the 2011 model year. It is built on the same platform as the Jeep Grand Cherokee, features unibody construction, and has been assembled at the Jefferson North Assembly Plant in Detroit, Michigan since late 2010.

Each generation had options for different engine sizes and power ratings, with different transmissions also. In 2009 a hybrid variant was introduced, but ended quickly with the second generation Durango. From 2007 to 2009 the Durango was available as the Chrysler Aspen from Chrysler. Over two million Durangos have been sold since it was introduced in 1998.

One of the most common issues reported with the 2021 Dodge Durango is the Active Head Restraints (AHR) randomly deploying. This issue has been reported to have caused free concussions to some drivers and passengers. The AHR system is designed to reduce the risk of whiplash injuries in the event of a rear-end collision. However, when it randomly deploys, it can cause injury and be a significant safety concern.

Another common issue reported with the 2021 Dodge Durango is defective parts. Some consumers have reported that their vehicles came with incorrect and damaged parts. This issue can be a significant inconvenience and can lead to additional repair costs for the owner.

The 2021 Dodge Durango has also been reported to have engine problems. While the specific details of these engine problems are not mentioned, it is worth noting that engine problems are the worst problem category for Dodge Durango models overall. The 2004 model year is rated as the worst due to higher repair costs and more problems at lower mileage. The most reported problem is with the 1999 Dodge Durango for shutting down while driving. The average cost to fix these engine problems is $5,000, with an average mileage of 115,000 miles.

In summary, the 2021 Dodge Durango has been reported to have several common issues, including problems with the active head restraints, defective parts, and engine problems. • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-03

  • Summary: LF DRL not working only on this side. Vehicle was taken to dealership, I have an extended warranty but was told this was not covered. UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-09-21
  • VIN: 1C4SDJET7MC
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Went to the Chrysler Dodge Jeep Ram dealership in Lawrenceburg, IN last year and was told that spoiler failed a recall inspection and needed to be replaced. Unfortunately, spoilers were on back order and would take several months to get in. A month or so later, my local body shop took my Dodge Durango to the Dodge dealership in Batesville, IN for repairs after someone ran into my vehicle while it was parked in a parking lot. The Batesville dealership did another inspection for the spoiler recall and cleared the inspection stating that the spoiler passed inspection. So now I have one dealership (Lawrenceburg, IN) saying that there is a "gap" and that the spoiler in fact needs replaced, but that they can't fix it because they will not be reimbursed by Chrysler since the recall for my Durango has been "cleared" by the Batesville, IN Dodge dealership. After contacting the second dealership, they still claim that the spoiler is fine and refuse to fix it either. I admit, I don't know what I am looking for, but I also see a gap between the spoiler and where it is attached to the vehicle. It also seems to be loose. So, my question is, what exactly is the spoiler recall on 2021 Dodge Durango's? Should I be concerned that it's not getting fixed? Most importantly, who will be responsible if this thing comes off and injurers someone driving behind me?

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,LANE DEPARTURE,BACK OVER PREVENTION PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-31
  • VIN: 1C4SDJCT1MC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,LANE DEPARTURE,BACK OVER PREVENTION
  • Summary: All electrical systems are periodically malfunctioning. This includes power windows, door locks, lane assist, heating and cooling/climate controls, heated steering wheel, screen displays, radio controls, steering wheel controls, shifter, etc. all of these things will turn on and off by themselves while driving. Lane assist has frequently turned on and off while driving and jerks the steering wheel. Park assist turns on and off while driving. The vehicle does not always turn off with the push button stop and has to be attempted several times. I have been locked inside my vehicle because the electric locks will not release without several attempts. Power windows frequently do not work. Back hatch frequently will not release, leaving the back of the vehicle inaccessible. It has shifted into neutral by itself while driving requiring me to pull to the side of the road and physically move the shifter back and forth. It was taken to the dealership where they stated there were so many error codes they could not clear them all. I am currently waiting on an electrical wiring part that they say will fix it because they’ve “seen this before”. It is 1000 miles beyond the basic warrantee and my purchased extended warrantee will not cover the $700 repair because it is considered normal corrosion wear. It is really not safe to drive and it has taken weeks for the dealership to address the issue, waiting on an ordered part that may fix it.

  • VIN: 1C4RDHDG8MC

The mechanic informed the contact that the parts to repair the vehicle were on back order. The contact called the local dealer, but the vehicle was not diagnosed or repaired. EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-01
  • VIN: 1C4RDJDGXMC
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: My drivers side headlamp that is sealed the running light is out and apparently several other Dodge Durango owners have the same issue like it’s a defect when they were being made and it seems to be the one on the drivers side every time when you look up all the complaints about it! I am very unhappy about this situation and that a recall already hasn’t been made with all the vehicles that have this same exact problem instead because it’s sealed the dealerships want us to pay $1800 to get it replaced! If several other Dodge Durangos are having the same problem they should fix this issue moving forward! Our vehicle is only 3 years old! This could definitely cause an issue when it’s foggy outside and make it a very dangerous situation since we cannot change it ourselves! So this needs to be fixed!

  • Summary: While driving paved road noticed a cloud of smoke behind the vehicle. Immediately pulled to the side of the road and shut vehicle off. After checking under the vehicle found coolant leaking from the engine compartment, there was no coolant in the expansion tank either. Any driving would have resulted in engine destruction. Called a tow truck. After waiting on the side of the road for 5 hours for tow truck, vehicle was taken to the nearest dealer on the flatbed. At the dealer, technician stated, it is a frequent occurrence on this brand of the vehicle, and they are very familiar with repairing it. Dealership repair, exposed burst/hole, from inside out, in the coolant hose. Glad it did not happen in the winter; I might not be typing this message.

SUSPENSION,WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-22
  • VIN: 1C4SDJH95MC
  • Components: SUSPENSION,WHEELS
  • Summary: We own a 2021 Dodge Durgano SRT Hellcat which we received from the dealership on [XXX]. It has only 17,083 miles on it and the 50,000 mile stock Pirelli run flat tires are cording and coming apart at the interior of the tire. The vehicle has had recommended tire rotations every year at 5,000 to 6,000 mi. They have advised there is a MAJOR factory alignment issue causing the front tires to lean in at the top resulting in very abnormal wear to the interior of the tires. We have photo proof of our 2021 Durango with the alignment issue versus our 2018 Durango without it. We notified Dodge of this safety issue especially since they have three brand new Durangos for sale with this same issue. We were unaware of this issue until the tires started coming apart since this was a brand new car and factory alignment should not be set to destroy tires. We filed claim# [XXX] with Chrysler and they denied our claim to assist us with aligning the vehicle and replacing the tires and also showed refused to correct the issue for future customers purchasing their vehicles. We are currently in a battle with our local dealership HW Hunter Dodge (Lancaster, CA) to have the tires replaced and alignment issues corrected yet they are also refusing to help or be liable for the alignment problem on our vehicle and other vehicles they have sold or will be selling. This poses a serious safety hazard for anyone who has purchased a 2021 or newer Durango R/T, SRT, and SRT Hellcat which all have this camber issue at the top of the both front tires. Eventually, someone will experience a massive tire failure with their family in the vehicle and will either be seriously hurt if not worse. A recall should be issued for this problem immediately and replacement of damaged tires but both Dodge and Chrysler will not take any liability nor help with even looking into the issue. In the photos attached our 2021 Durango is White, our 2018 Durango is Red, and the black Durango is brand new for sale. EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-05-15
  • VIN: 1C4SDJCT8MC
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: I own a 2020 Dodge Durango. The daytime running lights malfunctioned after one year of use. The vehicle warranty does not cover this issue, and all dealers and insurance companies will charge over $1200 to repair the lights. This issue has been known to affect the 2020 Durango model since its release. The lights cannot be repaired by replacing a bulb; instead, the entire headlight module must be replaced. Dodge has stated that this issue is considered normal wear and tear on the vehicle, even though they acknowledge that it is a known issue. Dodge does not know why the lights malfunction after just one year, but their resolution is to charge the consumer to replace the module and also advises that the issue may recur after the repair.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-17
  • VIN: 1C4SDJFT1MC
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: When driving the vehicle and pressing the brakes to stop, the brake pedal goes all the way to the floor. It takes several attempts of releasing and pressing the pedal before the brakes start to work again. The vehicle was taken to the Dodge dealer service, where they installed a computer to diagnose the issue. During their test drive, the same problem occurred, with the brakes not working. However, nothing registered on the computer. They bled the brakes, replaced the rear rotors, and returned the vehicle. Unfortunately, the same issue happened again. The vehicle was then taken to a private shop, where they changed the front brakes, bled the lines, and returned the vehicle. But the problem persisted, with the pedal still going straight to the floor. This issue has occured several times since purchasing the vehicle.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-02
  • VIN: 1C4RDJAG7MC
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: The DRL on these models seem to stop working within 3-4 years. I have only one working on the vehicle currently. Dealer is stating the light cost is $1000 plus install to fix. Apparently it’s a “known” issue by FCA. The safety concern is that when people first see it they have told me they thought I was a motorcycle. As only one DRL is working. The whole headlight should not have to be replaced in these as it is only the DRL that is bad. How do they expect people to pay for this.

Our 2021 Dodge Durango had some issues, such as a malfunctioning touch screen and a loose door handle cover. However, we confidently took it into the shop and had the problems resolved quickly.

Sorry to hear about the issues you've been having with your vehicle. It sounds frustrating to have experienced the back spoiler flying off while driving and now dealing with problems with the election and volume controls. It's understandable to feel disappointed, especially when you've taken such good care of your Dodge Durango. I hope we can help you resolve these issues soon.

The SUV is undeniably beautiful, but like some other Dodge vehicles, it may be slightly underpowered and prone to mechanical and electrical issues. Unfortunately, I am now considering paying an additional $2000 for an extended warranty because I anticipate having to pay out-of-pocket for repairs once my bumper-to-bumper warranty expires. Since purchasing my Durango in 2021, it has been in the shop at least every 3 to 4 months with another issue that Dodge either can't fix or can't figure out. Despite these challenges, I would consider buying another one, but I would definitely sell it before the bumper-to-bumper warranty expires.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share an experience I had today on the 401 with my Durango rt 2021 model. Unfortunately, I started experiencing some problems with a loud humming sound coming from the front portion of the truck. At first, I thought it was just the road, but the noise kept getting louder. When I got home 120km later, I noticed that the back end window and bumper had an oily and dusty feeling to them. I pulled over many times to check under the hood and under the vehicle, but I couldn't find anything wrong. I wasn't sure if it was smoke or dust coming from the back when I pulled over. Have you ever experienced anything like this before?

We are planning to replace our 2015 cx-9 sometime this year. However, we are quite limited in our options as we are not fans of turbo and CVT. Today, I test drove the 2021 Durango and I must say, it was a pleasant surprise. My previous experience with a 2013 Dakota 5.7 was not impressive, but the 2021 R/T was a totally different beast. The V8 was ultra-responsive and the shifts seemed to be where they should be under casual acceleration as well as spirited driving. Although you do have to really bury the accelerator if you want to experience that V8 growl, it is definitely sleeping under there! I wasn't able to test it on any curves, just some S turns through a deserted church parking lot. But it seemed to be responsive, though you do feel its size and weight a bit. The acceleration of the V6 CX-9 has always been responsive but lacking. With the V8 Durango, I finally felt satisfaction! The Durango controls were surprisingly ergonomic and intuitive, even though I was test driving after dark. The side mirror adjustment was a bit of a puzzle, but overall, the design was well thought out. One of the first things you notice is the massive 10However, I found that the heated driver seat on Hi was barely warm. Although the leather seating was very comfortable, I'm not a fan of sweaty leather. I would probably opt for a trim level that does not include ventilated seats. I want the V8, but I'm not made of money! So, I can see some cloth seat covers in the near future. One of the most shocking discoveries is that compared to the 2015 CX-9, the Durango has a mere 87 cu ft of cargo space! Despite having almost the exact same exterior dimensions, the CX-9 somehow manages 100 cu ft of cargo space! Could the side curtain airbags be sapping 6 inches of interior space? Could the driver seats be that much further back that they absorb that much cargo space? The hood seems smaller than in the CX-9, so I don't think they lost interior space there. It's a mind-bender 🤔. After further research, I determined that the 2011 Durango got severely shrunken when reintroduced after a couple of years hiatus. So, it is now even smaller than the '15 CX-9. That's a mighty shame. Since I often travel with a 65I noticed that there wasn't a cloth barrier or channel on the vents to prevent debris from entering the engine compartment. Additionally, it would have been great if the hood scoop was functional. While testing the vehicle, I expected the rear seats to fold flat, but unfortunately, I have yet to find any vehicle where that actually works as advertised. The tester I had came with rear captain chairs without a console, just a couple of cup holders molded into the floor between the seats. This could be an engineering puzzle, as your third-row passenger can stumble over your soda. Personally, I prefer a second-row bench kind of seat, as it's nice for the kids to stretch out there sometimes. However, having spent most of my time as a driver, maybe I'm missing something. Overall, this seems like a very nice package. Since Dodge doesn't have anything to rival the Yukon or Expedition, this is it! (Although an Expedition with a V6 is just stupid. I would never buy that for more money). We'll most likely make our purchase as soon as the novelty wears off and they start offering a discount. Hopefully, that will happen before they outlaw the combustion engine later this year 😜. Update 2022: Surprisingly, we just couldn't pull the trigger on this vehicle. Needing more interior space was really the big issue, but we also want the V8 (yes, even in 2022, we want the V8). So it looks like our options are going to be limited to a Police spec Expedition or a Yukon Ext. If I can find a recent police spec at an auction with 100 miles on it for maybe $10k or less, it might be a fun project turning it back into a street vehicle. 🤔

Hey there! That's a really nice car you have!

This SUV is so much fun to drive, even though it may not be the most practical choice. The transmission is incredibly responsive and the supercharger whine is sure to put a smile on your face every time you get behind the wheel. It handles even better than our 2019 RT, and the much-needed technology upgrade is a great addition. The only downside is that the cup holders are a bit small and can only fit a standard-sized water bottle, but that seems to be a common issue across many car brands.

I just bought the 2021 rt with tow and go and it tows my 7000lbs trailer with ease. I would definitely recommend it to people who want an SUV with the towing capabilities of a truck and the performance capabilities of a sports car.

Just treated myself to a new ride and I am so happy! This truck is amazing - everything about it is popping! It rides so smoothly, like you're on a cloud, and the aggressive muscle look is just awesome!
