2012 Dodge Durango problems

The Dodge Durango is a mid-size/full-size SUV produced by Dodge starting with the 1998 model year. The first two generations were very similar in that both were based on the Dodge Dakota and Dodge Ram, both featured a body-on-frame construction and both were produced at the Newark Assembly Plant in Newark, Delaware through the 2009 model year.

The third-generation Durango began with the 2011 model year. It is built on the same platform as the Jeep Grand Cherokee, features unibody construction, and has been assembled at the Jefferson North Assembly Plant in Detroit, Michigan since late 2010.

Each generation had options for different engine sizes and power ratings, with different transmissions also. In 2009 a hybrid variant was introduced, but ended quickly with the second generation Durango. From 2007 to 2009 the Durango was available as the Chrysler Aspen from Chrysler. Over two million Durangos have been sold since it was introduced in 1998.

Common 2012 Dodge Durango problems

The 2012 Dodge Durango has been reported to have several common problems based on complaints from owners, which can be categorized into fuel pump issues, alternator failure, and rod bearing failure.

Fuel pump issues are one of the most glaring problems in the 2012 Dodge Durango. The fuel pump relay inside the Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM-7) may fail, causing the vehicle to stall without warning.

Alternator failure is another common problem in the 2012 Dodge Durango. The alternator may suddenly fail, causing the vehicle to lose power steering and electrical power, increasing the risk of a crash.

Rod bearing failure is a less common but still significant problem in the 2012 Dodge Durango. This issue can cause the engine to seize, leading to catastrophic engine failure.

In addition to these problems, the 2012 Dodge Durango has also been reported to have issues with the brake booster shield, which can cause water to enter the brake system and affect the vehicle's braking performance.

Overall, while the 2012 Dodge Durango has several common problems, many of these issues have been the subject of recalls, and owners are encouraged to have their vehicles serviced promptly to address any potential safety concerns.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-08-05
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: 1C4SDJDT6CC
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: While driving our 2012 Dodge Durango in town, we noticed the battery warning light come on and a hot smell coming from the vehicle. We were not far from home so we limped it back home to the garage to see what was going on. When we lifted the hood, there was a very overwhelming burning smell, our alternator was literally glowing red hot, and there was smoke pouring out from around it. We quickly put out the fire and disconnected the battery. Afterwards, we had it towed to a repair shop where it was confirmed the alternator failed as well as fried our PCM in the process. We paid for the install of a new alternator and PCM, however, the radio remained failed. Upon researching this scenario, we found there was a recall for this exact issue for the exact span of years and engine type, however, our VIN was somehow not included in this recall. That needs to be changed. The alternator issue could have been extremely dangerous for our family while in the car, as well as others around us due to what could have happened if the card didn’t make it home. We could have been stranded on a busy road way causing accidents while the car was engulfed in flames due to the alternator. Also, had we not immediately popped the hood at home to check the engine, the car could have burned down our home. We request that the NHTSA and FCA recall company address this issue and the potential for extending the recall to include other Durango VINs.

AIR BAGS,SEATS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-02-16
  • VIN: 1C4RDJDG6CC
  • Components: AIR BAGS,SEATS
  • Summary: My fairly new teen driver drove the car to the gym and the headrest basically “exploded” onto the back of his head with a swift blow. He had a very bad headache and was really freaked out. There were no lights, no notice, no impact. Just out of the blue drivers side. Called local dealership to see what it could be and apparently the pin can break or the plastic holding the pin and the airbag restraint type system in the headrest will just explode open as if in an accident. He said no recalls and out of warranty. How can this NOT be a serious safety issue??? My inexperienced teen driver could have been so stunned he caused an accident! Anyways they said it would be roughly $1100 to replace entire headrest because there is no option to repair it once deployed. Can we still drive it? If we don’t have that $ now

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-06
  • VIN: 1C4SDJDT6CC
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: While picking my son up from religion my vehicle suddenly stalled without warning. Thankfully I was pulling into the church parking lot and was in no real danger. I tried to jump start the vehicle with no success, but did notice the insulation on the jumper cables had started to melt. Towed to mechanic and was told the alternator had failed, in turn fried the battery. He replaced both, but then discovered the PCM was fried as well. Took it to the dealer here and was told faulty alternator again, which was replaced again, only to be told the PCM was fried. Now I'm into this for $3000 and I have no faith in the vehicle, the manufacturer, or the dealerships.

ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-08-17
  • VIN: 1C4RDJAGXCC
  • Components: ENGINE,FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM
  • Summary: The 2014 through 2018 3.6L Pentastar motors are covered under a tech service bulletin for their Drivers side valve train being manufactured incorrectly. This can lead to a misfire and hesitation to accelerate in an Emergency. This happened to me recently and I thought it was just a bad spark plug. Mechanic did a full check and believes there is a stuck valve in the engine on the exact same side that the 2014 to 2018 motors are prone to failure. I believe the 2012 and 2013 Engines are also prone to the same failures as their newer counter parts. As I was trying to accelerate to avoid an incident my car stuttered and started to misfire badly. Almost causing a collision. This happened without warning and never previously had this issue. Vehicle was completely mechanically sound before this. This can happen without any warning or signs its going to happen. And after bringing the vehicle to a mechanic and doing much of my own research it appears that the drivers side of the 3.6L v6 in my vehicle is currently under a TSB for the #2,4,6 cylinder head. This can cause the vehicle to have no power for a moment which if I were merging onto the highway and lacked powered could result in a rear end collision. Believe this is a safety issue as well as mechanical issue.

POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-07-20
  • VIN: 1C4RDHDG0CC
  • Components: POWER TRAIN,ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: I bought this vehicle second hand and was not warned of any recalls. I started having problems in April of 2023. Windshield wipers would turn on by themself, car would randomly shut off. I brought to several shops and nobody could figure out why it was reading “high voltage”. The car then started having occasional problems shifting. I eventually got on MOPAR website to be made aware there were 3 recalls and alternator was one of them. I called musson patout dodge in new Iberia, LA and made an appointment to fix my car. On the morning of our appointment the car died in the road on the way to dodge and wouldn’t restart without a jump. I brought it in and over the son of 3 days the fixed all the recalls. On my way to pick it up they called and made me aware it would need a new battery I told them I will go replace it as soon as I get the car. Since I picked up the car the shifting problems have not stopped. I have had a code reading “implausible data from tcm”. I have had a mechanic TELL me this recalled alternator going out is what cause this tcm to go out and Musson REFUSES to take it in and even diagnose it without over $170 that I don’t have to spend anymore. This is consequential damage that dodge should be held liable for and they are giving me the most difficult time, it’s my only vehicle for me and my 2 kids and I cant even drive it anymore.

So I spoke to service rep [XXX] at EDWARDS CDJR OF OMAHA 17950 Burt St and had the car towed back to the dealership that fixed on it EDWARDS CDJR OF OMAHA. I was originally told they didn’t have a loaner to lend to me so I can continue being a caregiver to my mother and transport her and my 7 children around until 04/21/2023 and that someone would call me that day to pickup a loaner vehicle. I called on 04/21/2023 about the loaner and they said someone would call me by midday to pick up a loaner. Now it’s Monday 04/24/2023 and I get a text stating 10 things are wrong with my vehicle in this link https://c.xtime.com/vkepCy2nkAoA2L4fXX including the PCM, which was more items then what was originally stated when they had inspected my vehicle on 04/05/2023 during the recall fix. So I informed them that, “ I will not pay for the pcm to be fixed because this issue is a result of whoever was the mechanic that was originally supposed to fix the recall fuel pump relay, so your shop has to fix it due to negligence on your mechanic's fault. I don't want to have to take anyone to court or give this issues to an attorney, this was sent to better business bureau because I have been left without transportation and facing economic hardship due to this situation.” Then they had their Service Manager [XXX] reach out to me over the phone, and he said that he spoke to three on-site master mechanic at the dealership and they all said the PCM had nothing to do with the fuel pump relay recall. I asked about escalating the issue and submitting an incident report to an higher up authority, he said he can’t. I asked again about the loaner he said there’s no loaner available. Negative 2012 Dodge Durango car reviews

Although this particular vehicle did not meet my expectations, I am confident that Dodge produces high-quality trucks. The shifting was not as smooth as I had hoped, but I believe that the newer models with the V6 engine have improved transmissions. While I prefer my 2002 Trailblazer, I acknowledge that others may have different preferences. Overall, I trust in Dodge's ability to manufacture reliable vehicles.

We purchased the 2012 V8 Citadel, which unfortunately had some issues. Our previous car, a Saturn Outlook, had let us down, and we were hoping for a better experience with this one. However, we had to have the transmission rebuilt within the first 20,000 miles of ownership. Despite having warranties, it was still a major concern. Later on, the car began stalling randomly, which was a huge safety concern for us. We tried to get Dodge corporate involved, but they claimed they couldn't fix our car because there was no diag code. We later found out that there had been a recall for this issue, but our VIN# was just outside of the recall. Despite the issues we faced, we are confident in our ability to handle them and make the best of our situation.Despite numerous attempts to have both the fuel relay and TIPM replaced, Dodge, AutoNation Katy (the new owners of the dealership where we purchased our car), and the Service department refused to comply. However, after several meetings, certified letters, and phone calls, we finally met with the Area Manager. When we expressed our desire for a new TIPM, he seemed surprised and said, 'Oh, that's all you want!' Yes, that is all we want to ensure the safety of our family. While we understand that all manufacturers have issues, it is frustrating to have wasted so much time, work hours, and gas when a simple solution could have been provided. Dodge should prioritize the safety of their customers and take responsibility for their faulty products.

Hello! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to share my experience with my 2012 Dodge Durango Citadel. I purchased it in 2014 from the owner of a Mercedes-Benz dealership with about 45,000 miles on it. Since then, I've taken great care of it, keeping it in a garage and ensuring all services are up to date. Currently, it has 79,500 miles on it. However, I've been having some trouble with a recall for the V62 furl relay. Unfortunately, the manufacturer is only releasing one part per week to each dealership across the country, which has made it difficult to schedule an appointment. I did manage to schedule an appointment with a dealer in Orlando, but due to a recent move, I asked if the part could be sent to a closer dealer. Unfortunately, the dealer that ordered the part said it hadn't arrived yet and it could take another 4 to 5 months before it does. In the meantime, I've been experiencing issues with the front FCW Cam and the sensor that detects objects in front of the car. This has caused some problems while driving, but unfortunately, the issue hasn't been able to be reproduced by the dealerships I've taken it to. Despite this, I remain hopeful that a solution can be found. As a disabled veteran, my 2012 Dodge Durango is my only means of transportation, and I rely on it to get to my doctors' appointments, which can be quite far away. Thank you for taking the time to read my story.Hi there! I wanted to share my experience with the Citadel. I chose this car for two reasons: Dodge's reputation for quality products and excellent customer service, and the name 'Citadel' which implies strength and security. However, I've had some issues with both the dealer and the manufacturer not being very helpful after the sale. Have any of you experienced problems with the faulty recall V62 (relay switch)? It's frustrating to think about how much extra money we're spending on gas because of it. Even with my Mopar lifetime extended warranty, I'm still having trouble getting this issue resolved. I just wanted to let everyone know that if you're having similar problems with Dodge, you're not alone. Thanks for listening!

I currently own a 2012 Citadel V8 5.7 Hemi. The vehicle has attractive lines, is comfortable, and has great technology and gadgets. However, the engine has been problematic and Dodge has not been very helpful in addressing customer concerns. The engine has a tendency to suddenly turn off while driving, which can be dangerous. In such situations, I put the vehicle in neutral and gently press the brake pedal to restart the engine. Although this issue was supposed to be addressed in a recall, Dodge has not been able to fix it. Another issue is the rattling sound that occurs when accelerating to pass someone or to floor the car. The check engine light comes on and off, and the computer shows cylinder misfires. Despite these issues, I still appreciate the vehicle's looks and technology. However, I am disappointed that Dodge has not taken responsibility for the engine problems.

Before making a purchase, it may be helpful to review the recalls on this vehicle. I personally owned a Durango for a year and a half, but unfortunately experienced some issues. Within a short period of time, there were two recalls, and the alternator problems still do not have a permanent fix. In addition, I encountered some cosmetic issues such as the panel behind the passenger door handle falling off and the trim around the gear being loose. The vehicle also had some blind spots. Unfortunately, it is against policy to offer rental cars to customers during recall work. If you are considering the Durango, it may be worth looking up the recalls to see if there have been any updates. I hope this information is helpful to you.

Positive 2012 Dodge Durango car reviews

  1. Nels Abernathy 2024-11-29

I recently had the opportunity to test drive the Durango in snowy conditions and I was thoroughly impressed. Even when attempting doughnuts, the 5.7L hemi prevented any sideways sliding. Additionally, the vehicle handled corners with ease, almost as if it were driving on dry roads. The Durango's use of Subaru's technology, which is six years newer, along with Goodyear all season tires, makes it a standout choice. In comparison to the Toyo Open County AT, which sipped fuel, I was able to turn in the same circle without losing control. Overall, I am still in awe of the Durango's performance.

When I was looking for a 3-row SUV, I had to choose between the 4 Runner, Explorer, and Durango. Let me start with what I liked about the Durango: it has plenty of space and a usable 3rd row. The redesign is of high quality and refined. The 5.7 Hemi has great low-end power, and the Uconnect system is user-friendly. Compared to the same year 4 Runner or Explorer, with similar miles and features, I saved 5K with Dodge. The only downside is that the 5.7 Hemi is a gas guzzler, but I was aware of that before purchasing. As for the other reviews that mentioned the transmission and shifting, I can see what they mean, but for me, it recovers quickly and should not be compared to a sports car.

217k miles and still runs, drives, and rides like a new one. I love my Durango so much!

  4. Samir Schaden 2024-11-20

I have owned many vehicles, but my 2012 Dodge Citadel, 5.7 V8 Hemi is by far the best! I have driven it over 95,000K miles through snow storms, icy roads, highways, two-lane highways, and country roads between Colorado and South Dakota. The comfort is amazing, and the rear captain's seats always impress. The Hemi engine provides so much power for a smaller vehicle, and the 5-speed control has been great when driving in the mountains. I have always felt safe in this SUV, which is not cheap and has a great feel of stability. The headlamps and additional lighting provide a wider range of visibility, and I have never slid on ice or snow. I have even driven through whiteout conditions at night! The entertainment features are great, and the front viewing of movies when sitting still has really been enjoyable. The gas mileage with the ECO feature is amazing! As a woman who has owned trucks and cars, I can say that this vehicle is the best of both worlds!

I bought the 2012 Dodge Durango after much consideration. This is the first SUV/crossover I have owned, and I love it! It is fun to drive, handles like a dream, u-turns on a dime, and has enough room for my two grandsons aged 7 and 8, and my daughter who has two toddlers in car seats. I had considered the Honda Pilot, the Ford Explorer, and the GMC Acadia, but I am so glad I went with the Durango. I am very satisfied with my purchase.
