dodge logo

The Dodge Durango is a mid-size/full-size SUV produced by Dodge starting with the 1998 model year. The first two generations were very similar in that both were based on the Dodge Dakota and Dodge Ram, both featured a body-on-frame construction and both were produced at the Newark Assembly Plant in Newark, Delaware through the 2009 model year.

The third-generation Durango began with the 2011 model year. It is built on the same platform as the Jeep Grand Cherokee, features unibody construction, and has been assembled at the Jefferson North Assembly Plant in Detroit, Michigan since late 2010.

Each generation had options for different engine sizes and power ratings, with different transmissions also. In 2009 a hybrid variant was introduced, but ended quickly with the second generation Durango. From 2007 to 2009 the Durango was available as the Chrysler Aspen from Chrysler. Over two million Durangos have been sold since it was introduced in 1998.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-07-01
  • VIN: 1D4HS38N63F
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Clogged or leaking A/C drain hose. This hose is responsible for draining condensation from the A/C evaporator, the condensation pools in large quantity on the passenger floorboard. This constitute a hazard for the electrical systems near it and a risk of corrosion not to mention potential toxic mold and basically the car self flooding. A few videos document the issue and it is due to bad design where the drain hose is oriented upward and/or the seal blocking water from penetrating the passenger cabin is cracked or falls away in time. Cars from 20+ years ago like my Dodge Durango would certainly experience a degradation of such a seal. The seal itself is very difficult to get to but the issue is pressing. This is an example of a video documenting the issue where the narrator describes this as bad design. [XXX] INFORMATION REDACTED PURSUANT TO THE FREEDOM OF INFORMATION ACT (FOIA), 5 U.S.C. 552(B)(6)

  • Summary: CHIEF COMPLAINT: PURCHASED VEHICLE USED WITH APPROX. 30,000 MILES ON IT. HAVE BEEN EXPERIENCING ENGINE/ELECTRICAL ISSUES WHICH REQUIRE ME TO CHANGE SPARK PLUGS AND ENGINE COILS ABOUT EVERY 50,000 MILES. I HAVE DONE THIS THREE TIME IN THE LAST SIX YEARS COSTING ME ABOUT 900+ EACH VISIT. I HAVE TAKEN IT TO SEVERAL DIFFERENT MECHANICS FOR OPINIONS. I RECENTLY STARTED GETTING MISFIRING AGAIN. REPAIRED AGAIN ONE AT A TIME AS WELL AS SOME SPONTANEOUS OCCURRENCES THAT WERE VERY FRIGHTENING. FOR EXAMPLE: WIND SHIELD WIPERS GOING CRAZY, LIGHTS BLINKING, DOORS LOCKING AND UNLOCKING, WINDOWS ROLLING THEM SELVES DOWN AT NIGHT, HORN BLARING WHEN TURNING ON HEAD LIGHTS, AND THE BEST ONE RANDOM SMALL ACCELERATION WHILE DRIVING. I HAVE BEEN TOLD I HAVE A FAULTY TIPM. THE DEALERSHIP WILL NOT TAKE ANY RESPONSIBILITY FOR THIS VEHICLE DUE TO IT BEING ON YEAR OUT OF THE DOCUMENTED RECALL YEAR. THIS IS VERY DANGEROUS. SOMETHING SHOULD BE MADE RIGHT.

WHEELS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2016-08-07
  • Components: WHEELS
  • Summary: THE SPARE TIRE WINCH ON MY VEHICLE FAILED AND THE SPARE TIRE FELL TO THE PAVEMENT. IN MY CASE I WAS FORTUNATE TO BE IN A PARKING LOT WHEN IT HAPPENED AND THERE WAS NO ACCIDENT. IF THIS HAD HAPPENED ON THE HIGHWAY AN ACCIDENT WOULD HAVE ALMOST SURELY RESULTED. THE SPARE TIRE ON THESE VEHICLES IS QUITE LARGE AND HEAVY AND COULD CAUSE A LARGE NUMBER OF POSSIBLE OUTCOMES IF HIT AT HIGHWAY SPEEDS. THE SPARE TIRE WINCH USES A STRANDED STEEL CABLE TO LIFT AND LOCK THE SPARE TIRE UP AGAINST THE BOTTOM OF THE VEHICLES FRAME. THIS STRANDED STEEL CABLE FAILED RIGHT WHERE IT PASSED THROUGH THE CENTER OF THE RIM. THIS STRANDED STEEL CABLE IS GOING TO FAIL EVENTUALLY ON EVERY DODGE TRUCK THAT USED THIS DESIGN OF WINCH. EVERYONE WILL EVENTUALLY FAIL. CHRYSLER HAS USED THIS DESIGN IN LITERALLY HUNDREDS OF THOUSANDS OF VEHICLES OVER THE YEARS SINCE THE 90S OR BEFORE. IT AMAZES ME THAT THERE HAS BEEN NO ACCIDENTS OR FATALITIES RESULTING FROM THE FAILURE OF THE WINCH. AN INTERNET SEARCH SHOWED MANY INSTANCES OF THE SPARE TIRE FALLING FROM THE VEHICLE DUE TO THE CABLE FAILING.

Negative 2003 Dodge Durango car reviews

The 5.9L V-8 is really powerful, and the truck moves fast even with 6 passengers and luggage. The 3rd row seat is fairly comfortable although legroom is lacking, and there's room behind the third seat which is nice. However, we have had some issues with the drive train and have needed to replace virtually the entire thing. Fortunately, the work was covered by warranty, but it's still frustrating to deal with these problems.

In 2011, I purchased one of these with 121,000 miles on it. Although it was a great vehicle, it unfortunately experienced a leaking coolant issue. Upon further inspection, it was discovered that the issue was caused by a crack in the overflow reservoir, which masked a blown head gasket. Unfortunately, this resulted in catastrophic engine failure. Out of the 18 vehicles I have owned, this is the only one that has failed me in such a manner, not including classic Beetles.

I used to own a Subaru WRX but when my wife became pregnant I decided I needed something a little bigger. We had looked at a Grand Cherokee we liked but I decided to purchase the Durango. I really enjoy owning the Durango, but there are a few small things that catch my attention sometimes, like minor noises when I start the engine, the way it idles, or the way it accelerates. I'm probably just being paranoid because I've had to take it to the dealer every month to have something fixed, but thankfully I have a warranty. Overall, I'm happy with my purchase!

  4. Jaron Vandervort 2024-04-03

Within the first 2,000 miles, the Durango has been returned to the dealer for warranty repairs to the a/c system, transmission, rear differential, weatherstrips, and seat cover material. Unfortunately, the Durango SLT with the 5.9 engine has not met my expectations in terms of quality and reliability. As a result, I am concerned about the vehicle's long-term dependability.

I must say, I was pleasantly surprised with this vehicle. Having previously owned an Explorer, I can confidently say that this Durango surpasses it in every way! While Dodge may receive some negative comments, I have found that regular maintenance is key to keeping any vehicle in good condition. The Durango is not only comfortable, but also fun to drive, making it perfect for both long trips and city driving. It feels solid and sturdy on the road. After experiencing the Durango, I could never go back to an Explorer - it was too small, too boring, and I had too many problems with my FORD. If you are considering purchasing this vehicle, don't hesitate - trust me, you won't regret it!

The 2003 Dodge Durango R/T is a fantastic SUV that outshines its competitors. It boasts an excellent engine combination of HP (250 stock - 295 expandable @ 3800-4000 RPM) and torque (350 - 380 @ 3000RPM), making it an SUV/Sports Car hybrid. Its performance, comfortable ride, and looks are unmatched by any other vehicle in its class. It even rivals the large SUVs in internal comfort and amenities. With a towing capacity of 7000#, there's not much this SUV can't do. As 2003 marks the final year for the R/T (welcome the 2004 5.7 Hemi Durango), this model is destined to become a classic.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my Durango. I purchased it 11 years ago with 51K miles on it, and it has been a reliable companion on all of my travels throughout the US. The engine and transmission are still going strong, although it does burn oil, which is to be expected with that many miles. As someone who lives on a ranch and has put it through a lot of towing and tough work, I can attest to its durability. However, I have had some trouble with the climate control system. Despite going through half a dozen blower motor resistors, it still doesn't seem to work quite right. Additionally, the air direction control system always seems to blow out of the defroster to some degree, no matter what setting I choose. Overall, though, I'm still very happy with my Durango and would recommend it to anyone in the market for a reliable SUV.

I'm so glad to hear that you've been enjoying your vehicle! It sounds like it's been a great fit for your family, with plenty of space for everyone and the ability to tow heavy loads with ease. It's also great to hear that you've been getting manageable gas mileage from the 4.7L V8. While it's unfortunate that you had to replace the blower motor resistor bank, I'm glad to hear that it was an easy fix. Here's to many more happy miles on the road!

The Durango is a fantastic SUV, even though it may need to catch up with Ford and GM. However, with a redesign on the way, it should be able to fix that and more. It's impressive that it still stacks up well, which speaks volumes about the great job that Dodge did.
