2006 Dodge Durango problems

dodge logo

The Dodge Durango is a mid-size/full-size SUV produced by Dodge starting with the 1998 model year. The first two generations were very similar in that both were based on the Dodge Dakota and Dodge Ram, both featured a body-on-frame construction and both were produced at the Newark Assembly Plant in Newark, Delaware through the 2009 model year.

The third-generation Durango began with the 2011 model year. It is built on the same platform as the Jeep Grand Cherokee, features unibody construction, and has been assembled at the Jefferson North Assembly Plant in Detroit, Michigan since late 2010.

Each generation had options for different engine sizes and power ratings, with different transmissions also. In 2009 a hybrid variant was introduced, but ended quickly with the second generation Durango. From 2007 to 2009 the Durango was available as the Chrysler Aspen from Chrysler. Over two million Durangos have been sold since it was introduced in 1998.

FUEL/PROPULSION SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-11-12
  • VIN: 1D4HB48N66F

A half-gallon or more of fuel ends up violently spitting out of the filler neck onto people in the vicinity, onto the side of the car, and onto the ground—every time the vehicle is refueled. Many owners apparently have the exact same issue, judging by the large number of complaints on Durango and Dodge forums. Apparently, there was a recall covering model-year 2005 Durangos for this issue, but the issue is present on our 2006 Durango. This is a clear safety defect that could easily create an extremely dangerous situation.

Exposure to road salt is cause of rusting as assembly is totally exposed under vehicle. Stainless steel pipes are a better way except to bean counters.

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-01-08
  • VIN: 1d4hb48nx6f
  • Components: POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: In the winter of 2020 i had to use my 4wd lock in my durango. It never come out of 4wd lock. As a former ase technician and auto center manager I have to say dodge has a mess on their hands. 1st off its ridiculous to stop the flow of technical information to the owners of chrysler vehicles due to globalization!? I have been working on this vehicle for months as my patience allows. All testing and troubleshooting place the issue back into electrical issues within these durangos. This is a dangerous problem so many people own older dodge & chrysler products affected by this transfer case problem, recall it and get it done! Now it has to go to a chrysler dealer to have the codes cleared by a dodge scanner. Issue with that is the local dodge dealer in the village i live is not known for honesty. I took my durango there when i had issues with security system. I was told it would need a $1000. computer to start, then maybe another $1000. I took it home put a security module in it, been driving it since. Hold Chrysler accountable, do something for these thousands of people who own nice looking nice running dodge products they can't drive due to transfer case issues, and its not just one issue, there are several issues & components in that system that are troublesome!!

They will stop running anywhere, it shuts the fuel pump off where the vehicles no longer gets gas and you have a full tank. It is only a computerized Dealer fix. Their recall for some vehicles will fix my 2006 also by the simply relay bypass that they are installing. Negative 2006 Dodge Durango car reviews

  1. Mohammed Bechtelar 2024-11-22

I have owned SUVs from Chevy, Ford, and Dodge, and I can confidently say that this is the worst one. While my Ford Explorer lasted for 100,000 miles with no major issues and my Chevy Trailblazer had no problems during the short time I owned it, this SUV has been a major headache. Despite taking it back to the dealer three times for the same issue, it still refuses to shift into higher gears, and the tachometer has jumped between 1 and 2 for no apparent reason. Additionally, the A/C does not cool off the back seat at all, and the plastic around both front seats has broken. It's disappointing to have all these problems with only 27,000 miles on the vehicle. I have decided to return to Ford and will not be considering Dodge again. It's unfortunate because my parents both drive Dodges, and we used to be a Dodge family.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I wanted to let you know that I think you made a great choice in trading your 2001 Durango for a 2006 limited w/ Hemi engine. With a family of 5, it's important to have a vehicle that can tow almost 9000 pounds, and this one fits the bill perfectly! Plus, the fold flat third row seat is so convenient - it seats 3 in the rear bench with 3 headrests and 3 shoulder harnesses, and can be folded or raised from outside the vehicle. The ride quality is also much improved over the old style, making it a very safe SUV for the family. And let's not forget about the rear DVD/CD player - it's awesome for the kids! They can switch between a DVD, CD, Sat Radio, AM/FM, or MP3 discs. The power liftgate is also a great feature! As for the cons, I agree that it would be nice to have a rear view camera system like the Nissan Armada, and dual zone climate control would be a nice touch. I also understand that the running board can be a bit of a hassle for entry and exit. Overall, I think you made a great choice and I hope you enjoy your new ride!

My family bought me a 06' Durango SLT in December of 2010 when I turned 16. Unfortunately, I've had some issues with it such as the plastic on the seat belts falling off and the motor and transmission needing to be replaced due to burning oil and difficulty shifting into second gear. It's been frustrating, but I'm hopeful that we can find a solution. What do you think about Dodge's decisions in 2006?

  4. Delmer Kulas 2024-06-24

Although the Durango is a well-built and beautiful vehicle, it does not meet my needs. As someone who is used to driving Suburbans, I find the tight suspension to be too rugged and harsh, causing the vehicle to rock side by side even over small bumps. Additionally, the front seats are uncomfortable for both myself and my husband, and there is no leg room for passengers in the middle row seat. Despite the advertised spaciousness, I find the cargo room to be inadequate. While my daughters enjoy the comfort and travel experience, the Durango is not a practical vehicle for me.

Positive 2006 Dodge Durango car reviews

  1. Omer Romaguera 2024-11-13

The Durango is a fantastic vehicle and a great value. If you're looking for a car that handles like a dream, can pull a large boat or trailer, seats seven, and (truly) goes off road, then I highly recommend the Durango. I've owned several 4x4s over the past 25 years, including a Chevy K5 Blazer, a Suburban, a Ford Explorer, and a Nissan Pathfinder, but the Durango is the clear number one in my book. In fact, I rate it number one in the $25-55K price range. Definitely take one for a spin before considering any other SUV.

  2. Devan Greenholt 2024-10-21

I'm happy to share my experience with my 2006 Dodge Durango, which I find to be a significant upgrade from my 2001 model. The ride is noticeably smoother, it has more power, and the seats are much more comfortable. However, there are a few drawbacks to consider. The carpet is cheaper and more easily marred, and the plastic pieces on the seats have a tendency to pop off unexpectedly. Additionally, the seat belts in the second row can be difficult for children aged 8 and 10 to unbuckle, and the gap between the front seats and the middle console can be a bit of a challenge. Finally, there is one particularly strange feature - the radio loudly crackles and pops even when it's turned off. I've tried to resolve this issue with the dealership, but unfortunately, they were unable to offer a solution.

  3. Mike Ullrich 2024-10-13

This is my first SUV. I'm so happy with the power of the Hemi and the room it provides for my 3 kids. I was able to get a great deal with my employee discount, and an additional $8000 off of that! :)

  4. John Klocko 2024-10-01

I recently traded in my one-year-old Jeep Liberty, which my husband had surprised me with. Unfortunately, it was too small for my needs. However, my husband was very understanding and we decided to look for a new truck together. At first, we considered purchasing the Lexus GX440, but ultimately decided against it due to the high cost. On our way home from the dealership, we came across the Durango, which was much more affordable. We ended up purchasing the Durango and even got an extended warranty from a Chrysler dealership a week later, which was much cheaper. I absolutely love this truck! It rides great and the gas mileage is exactly what I expected it to be. Plus, with the $6000.00 rebate, it was an unbeatable deal.

  5. Barry Terry 2024-09-29

I had a 2002 Ford Explorer Eddie Bauer Edition, which was loaded with all the goodies. However, when I bought the Durango, it was an SXT model, so it doesn't have any of the bells and whistles that the Explorer had. Despite this, it drives much smoother, faster, and is more comfortable than the Explorer. I do regret not getting the Hemi and SLT or Limited edition, but I was already at my limit. On cold mornings, it's a little sluggish until it gets warm, but in the past few days of hot weather in Colorado, it's fast off the mark!
