2018 Dodge Durango problems
The Dodge Durango is a mid-size/full-size SUV produced by Dodge starting with the 1998 model year. The first two generations were very similar in that both were based on the Dodge Dakota and Dodge Ram, both featured a body-on-frame construction and both were produced at the Newark Assembly Plant in Newark, Delaware through the 2009 model year.
The third-generation Durango began with the 2011 model year. It is built on the same platform as the Jeep Grand Cherokee, features unibody construction, and has been assembled at the Jefferson North Assembly Plant in Detroit, Michigan since late 2010.
Each generation had options for different engine sizes and power ratings, with different transmissions also. In 2009 a hybrid variant was introduced, but ended quickly with the second generation Durango. From 2007 to 2009 the Durango was available as the Chrysler Aspen from Chrysler. Over two million Durangos have been sold since it was introduced in 1998.

Common 2018 Dodge Durango problems
The 2018 Dodge Durango is a three-row SUV that has received generally positive reviews for its refined performance and decent owner satisfaction scores. However, there are some common problems that have been reported by owners of this vehicle.
One of the most widespread problems with the 2018 Dodge Durango is the engine turning off suddenly. This issue has been reported by many owners at around 35,000 miles and is usually caused by the software in the body control module. If the body control module is up to date and failing, then you may have to replace it, which can cost around $800.
Another problem that has been reported by some 2018 Durango owners is a frozen touchscreen. This issue has been reported within the first 5,000 miles and can be resolved by installing software updates for the Uconnect software, which can improve its reliability. Most dealers will install these software updates for free, while others may charge around $50 for the labor to update it.
Water pump failures have also been reported on some Durango models, but fortunately, they are not as widespread. The water pump simply wears out and breaks at around 60,000 miles, and has to be replaced. Changing out the water pump is a time-consuming process, costing around $900.
In addition to these common problems, there are four recalls on the 2018 Dodge Durango, which is similar to other full-size SUVs from the same year. The most serious recall is for the voltage regulator, which can cause the vehicle to stall. Dodge will replace the regulators on affected models for free. Other recalls include the transmission park rods, and cruise control software, which Dodge will also fix.
Overall, the 2018 Dodge Durango is a reliable vehicle, but like any other car, it can have some common problems that owners should be aware of. Regular annual maintenance costs are average based on data provided by Repair Pal, at $499 per year. As a used 2018 Durango reaches 100,000 miles, and depending on the vehicle history, owners should be prepared to replace the blower motor resistor for $130, windshield wiper motor costing $270, along with the exhaust manifold which costs $550.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-09-05
- VIN: 1C4SDJET6JC
- Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
- Summary: I have noticed moisture in the rear tailgate light which houses the rear camera, license plate light, reverse lights and a larger(racetrack) tailight. I have drained the light a couple of times and noticed a small portion of the light was dim. This has been going on probably a year. Last night our son was driving behind and noticed the whole tailgate light had gone out along with the license plate light. There is no way to service this light it has to be replaced. The replacement light at the dealer was $1480. To me that is not an option. This is definitely a safety and consumer concern in my book.
SEATS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-30
- VIN: 1C4RDHAG9JC
- Components: SEATS
- Summary: The front passenger side headrest Safety mechanism deployed as I was driving down the road and upon looking at it, a piece inside is broken. when the headrest deployed, it hit my passenger in the head, pushing him forward and give him a headache it came out so hard and fast I brought the car to the dealership today, 9/3/24 they said other year, Durango have a recall, but my year is not one of them there were no warning lights.
SEATS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-09
- VIN: 1C4RDHAG5JC
- Components: SEATS
- Summary: The AHR system for the passenger seat failed. While sitting in the school line for one of my kids, the passenger headrest (AHR system) malfunctioned and protruded forward. If the force behind the protrusion would have hit someone it could have caused a concussion, if it would have been the driver, could have caused an accident if in motion. Having issues with Dodge warranting for the repair, have had dealership look at it, said it needs to be repaired, and I am currently working on a case with Dodge itself. No warning lamps were on and have not came on since the issue. This is a manufacturing defect and should be covered under the X88.
SEATS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-09
- VIN: 1C4RDHAG5JC
- Components: SEATS
- Summary: I was sitting in my car in the car line to drop my children off at school and the passenger seat headrest busted open and scared us 3 half to death. Luckily no one was sitting in the passenger seat, I believe if someone was it would have caused a severe headache and neck pain. I'm so fortunate it did not happen while I was driving either, who knows what my reaction would have been. Apparently this has happened to other vehicles including Dodge Durangos which is what I own. I took it to the dealership like Dodge customer service informed me to do and they weren't sure why it busted open and can't compress it back. The whole thing has to be replaced, $1,200. Dodge customer service doesn't feel like it's an issue and won't replace it. I've had a hard time getting any information from Dodge customer service and I can't seem to get them to call me back. My car has not been wrecked and this is definitely a manufacturing defect that needs to be addressed!! There was no warning at all that this was going to happen and no lights have come on in my car to let me know it did. Dodge needs to put out a recall on the headrest.
AIR BAGS,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-08-04
- Number Of Injuries: 1
- VIN: 1C4RDHDG7JC

I was sitting in the driver seat and the vehicle was parked, and when I moved a bag from the front passenger seat to the middle row, the driver side headrest opened on it's own. I cannot compress the headrest together. My concern is this was a faulty safety deployment.

This issue has cause my electrical to fail and now a costly repair for myself that I should not be responsible for. I have reaches out to the dealership many times with this issue and they failed to help me. The Electrical issue has been diagnosed by the dealership and are unwilling to help rectifie this issue. This issue is not just affecting me as a customer, but thousands of others. The issue has been inspected by certified technicians at the dealership and they have contacted the warranty company to let them know of the issue and will not fix the issue because of water damage but this is a well known issue in the 2018 Durangos that then intern affects the Electrical in these vehicles. - VIN: 1C4RDJEG0JC

- Summary: While driving on the highway, the computer system shut down and all screens went black. The car still drove but none of the controls worked anymore. We could not roll the windows down or turn the fans or a/c on and it was summer so the interior of the car immediately became unbearably hot. We pulled over as soon as it was safe to do so and turned the car off and back on. The system came on partially and we were only able to open the sunroof and roll the rear windows down half way before it stopped working again. We tried cycling the car on and off several more times but the computer system and all controls remained unresponsive and the screens black. The door locks did not work either so we couldn’t secure the vehicle. It was Sunday so no dodge dealerships were open. We were on a family vacation and half way to our destination so we drove an additional 3-4 hours to reach our destination. I took the Durango to the dealership the following day and they kept it for a week. They disconnected and reconnected the battery cable and the system worked again and they could not replicate the problem. We drove home after that without issue. Two weeks later, the same thing happened. This time, I pulled over and disconnected and reconnected the battery cables and that seemed to solve the issue again. We took it back to our local dealership and they could not replicate the issue.

- Manufacturer: Chrysler (FCA US, LLC)
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC:ANTILOCK/TRACTION CONTROL/ELECTRONIC LIMITED SLIP:CONTROL UNIT/MODULE
- Summary: Chrysler (FCA US, LLC) is recalling certain 2018-2019 Jeep Grand Cherokee and Dodge Durango vehicles. A malfunction in the antilock-brake system (ABS) module may illuminate the brake lights, and allow the vehicle to start and shift out of Park without the brake pedal being applied.
- Consequence: A vehicle that starts and shifts out of Park without applying the brake pedal can result in vehicle rollaway, increasing the risk of a crash without prior warning and/or injury to others outside of the vehicle.
- Remedy: The remedy includes updated HCU/ABS module software that prevents the HCU/ABS module from falsely reading pressure in the primary circuit. FCA has decided to do a two-Phase Campaign remedy schedule. Phase 1 began November 17, 2022. Phase 2 begin date has not been determined yet. Interim owner notification letters explaining the safety risk were mailed July 28, 2020. Owner notification letters were mailed on November 29, 2022. Owners may contact FCA US, LLC customer service at 1-800-853-1403. FCA US, LLC's number for this recall is Z48.

Great family vehicle.

No complaints! I'm so glad to hear that you'll be buying another Durango.

I'm so glad to hear that you love it!

The GPS may not hold as many destinations as you would like, and the disk player can only hold one disk at a time, which may be disappointing if you have a large CD music collection or books on disk. However, with eco drive, you can achieve great fuel efficiency, with 24+ miles per gallon on trips of 400 miles or more. Additionally, the engine response when entering the highway is truly awesome, especially with the V8 engine.

I'm looking forward to getting the 2021 Dodge Durango RT. As a lifelong Dodge fan, I've had a 1500 truck, the Nitro RT, and the Dakota - two of them! I love the mean look.

Driving at night can be dangerous when trying to back up and swerve to avoid obstacles on the side of the car. The back-up camera display can be distracting and prevent you from watching for things on the side. It's also risky to use ramps to check things because the door won't let you go and you can't see the ground under you while making decisions. During long trips, items placed on the steering wheel can limit arm movement. Additionally, the cargo space is quite small and the black interior can get very hot, making it uncomfortable for little kids who may have to sit on the floorboard. The car doesn't seal very well, which can make it sound like a window is down while driving. When I had new tires put on, the recommended psi on the door was only half of what was supposed to go in the tires, which caused poor performance. After putting in the correct psi, the car stopped in half the distance and handled much better. I'm not sure why there isn't a way to turn off the display, which comes apart under 50000 miles.

In July 2021, my 2018 Durango GT experienced a remote start issue that caused it to shut down when I entered the vehicle. Despite my appreciation for the truck's spaciousness and comfort, I am disappointed with the treatment I received from Chrysler. The dealership in NC has replaced the keys and RF hub twice, the ignition switch, and the PCM, with no resolution. Currently, they are replacing the BCM and attempting to shift the blame onto me. Despite the fact that my truck has been out of service for over five months, Chrysler has not provided me with any rental or fleet vehicle assistance. This level of customer service is unacceptable. Unfortunately, this experience has left a bad taste in my mouth regarding all Chrysler products. After nine months, I finally received my car back. All of the main computer components were replaced, and it appears that the BCM was the root cause of the issue. However, the dealer continues to blame me for the problem, and Chrysler corporate has not taken any action to assist me. A week after receiving the vehicle, the check engine light came back on. As a result, I have decided to sell the vehicle.

I purchased this vehicle used with 60k miles. Unfortunately, I experienced some issues such as the purge hose splitting in the first month, the backup camera and radio malfunctioning, and the front cv axle breaking while driving through 3 inches of snow. Currently, I am dealing with a manufacturing issue where a heater hose clamp rubbed through the aluminum tubing to the rear heater, and it is difficult to reach the clamp to move it. In my experience, this car has been costly to maintain and I would not recommend it. I personally will not be purchasing a Dodge again. Thank you for considering my experience.

Beats being the upgrade in this vehicle? Disgusting! The price of $76000 is quite steep. I would have probably bought it if it had the Harmon Kardon. However, I ended up buying a Hellcat with Harmon Kardon at another dealer, sight unseen! I am very happy with my purchase!
