1998 Dodge Durango problems

The Dodge Durango is a mid-size/full-size SUV produced by Dodge starting with the 1998 model year. The first two generations were very similar in that both were based on the Dodge Dakota and Dodge Ram, both featured a body-on-frame construction and both were produced at the Newark Assembly Plant in Newark, Delaware through the 2009 model year.

The third-generation Durango began with the 2011 model year. It is built on the same platform as the Jeep Grand Cherokee, features unibody construction, and has been assembled at the Jefferson North Assembly Plant in Detroit, Michigan since late 2010.

Each generation had options for different engine sizes and power ratings, with different transmissions also. In 2009 a hybrid variant was introduced, but ended quickly with the second generation Durango. From 2007 to 2009 the Durango was available as the Chrysler Aspen from Chrysler. Over two million Durangos have been sold since it was introduced in 1998.

Common 1998 Dodge Durango problems

The 1998 Dodge Durango, a popular SUV, has been known to have several common problems based on complaints from owners. Here are some of the issues:

  • Oil Sludge in the 2.7L Engine: This is a design defect in Chrysler's 2.7L engine, where oil sludge buildup can lead to sludge-related engine failure. Regular oil changes and using high-quality oil can help prevent this issue.
  • Defective Ball Joints: Ball joints are a critical part of the Durango's suspension system. Defective ball joints can cause clunking noises, uneven tire wear, and even steering problems. Replacing the faulty ball joints is the usual solution to this problem.
  • Transmission Issues: Transmission problems are common in the 1998 Dodge Durango. These issues can range from poor shifting, slipping, and even complete transmission failure. Regular maintenance and timely repairs can help prevent or mitigate these problems.
  • Fuel Efficiency: Many owners have reported poor fuel efficiency, with some experiencing as low as 9-14 miles per gallon (mpg). This issue can be attributed to the Durango's heavy weight and powerful engines.

These common problems in the 1998 Dodge Durango can lead to inconvenience, costly repairs, and even safety concerns. Regular maintenance, timely repairs, and using high-quality parts can help prevent or mitigate these issues.

STEERING,POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-01-12
  • Number Of Injuries: 2
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 1B4HS28Y4WF
  • Components: STEERING,POWER TRAIN,VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: DUE TO TO UNEVEN DRIVEWAY THE VEHICLE STALLED, OR TRANSMISSION BEGAN TO SPIN AND NOT MOVE, AT WHICH THE VEHICLE IGNITION WAS SHUT-OFF. IT WAS ATTEMPTED TO PUSH THE VEHICLE ABOUT 50 FEET TO A PARKING PLACE. ANOTHER PERSON OFFERS TO HELP, THEN PUSHES VEHICLE 25/50 FEET...ADVISES TO TURN THE WHEEL. THE WHEEL DOES NOT WANT TO TURN. THE VEHICLE HAS USED A LOT OF POWER STEERING FLUID ALMOST DAILY(HAS A HISTORY OF SQUEALING AND HARD TURNING AT START UNLESS LUBRICATED). SO ADVICE TO PLACE VEHICLE IN REVERSE CAUSED THE STEERING WHEEL TO BE EVEN HARDER TO TURN, IF AT ALL. I REQUESTED HELP FROM THE BYSTANDER, WHO AT WHICH POINT COMES TO THE DRIVER SIDE WHERE I WAS STANDING OUTSIDE OF THE VEHICLE ALSO. IT'S UNKNOWN IF THE BYSTANDER HELP TURNED THE IGNITION ON, OR IF THE IGNITION SOMEHOW TURNED ON BY ITSELF. THE VEHICLE WAS OCCUPIED BY ONE ADDITION PASSENGER AT THE TIME OF THE CRASH. THE VEHICLE TRAVELED IN REVERSE GEAR, WITHOUT ANYONE PUSHING ON THE ACCELERATOR. THERE WERE MINOR TO SEVERE INJURIES, AND DAMAGE TO 2 VEHICLES AND ONE STRUCTURE.

  • Components: AIR BAGS
  • Summary: "TAKATA AIRBAG" I WAS IN A ACCIDENT WHERE A PERSON RAN A RED LIGHT, GOING ABOUT 45 MPH AND I T-BONE THAT PERSON'S VEHICLE, WITH ME GOING ABOUT 40 MPH. THE AIRBAG DELAYED ON DEPLOYMENT IN MY VEHICLE. I HAD MY SEAT-BELT ON BUT I STILL ENDED UP HITTING MY CHEST ON THE STEERING WHEEL AND HITTING MY HEAD ON THE WINDSHIELD BEFORE AIRBAG DEPLOYED. I AM TRYING TO FIGURE OUT IF MY AIRBAG CAN GET DEFECTIVE OVER YEARS BECAUSE OF THE DELAY OF DEPLOYMENT. I DON'T KNOW IF IT IS A TAKATA AIRBAG THAT ISN'T ON THE RECALL LIST YET OR NOT. I STILL HAVE THE VEHICLE AND THE AIRBAG PART ITSELF THAT I CAN GIVE YOU THE NUMBERS OFF OF. SOMEONE REMINDED ME ABOUT THE TAKATA AIRBAGS SO I FIGURED I ASK.

SUSPENSION,POWER TRAIN PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2006-05-15
  • VIN: 1B4HS28Y9WF
  • Components: SUSPENSION,POWER TRAIN
  • Summary: BOUGHT MY DURANGO NEW IN MAY 1998. THE AUTOMATIC TRANSMISSION STARTED SHIFTING IMPROPERLY IN JULY 2000. TOOK IT TO A DODGE DEALER BECAUSE IT WAS STILL UNDER WARRANTY (31,418 MILES). THEY DROPPED THE TRANSMISSION PAN AND PRONOUNCED IT DOA (PAN WAS FULL OF METAL SHAVINGS). SHOULD HAVE SEEN THE WRITING ON THE WALL BUT I LOVED THIS VEHICLE. TOOK IT TO AN INSPECTION STATION FOR SAFETY & EMISSIONS TESTS IN MAY OF 2006. IT FAILED FOR BAD BALL JOINTS. I ASKED THE MANAGER WHY HIS MECHANICS SEEMED TO PAY SPECIAL ATTENTION TO THE FRONT END DURING INSPECTION AND HIS REPLY WAS IT WAS VERY COMMON TO FIND BAD BALL JOINTS ON APPROX. 50% OF ALL 1998-2000 DURANGOS. HAD MY MECHANIC REPLACE UPPER & LOWER BALL JOINTS, BOTH SIDES, AT 74,064 MILES, TO THE TUNE OF $701 PLUS TAX. I THEN STARTED HEARING ABOUT OTHER DURANGO OWNERS WITH SIMILAR BALL JOINT WOES. I WENT ONLINE AND STARTED RESEARCHING. FOUND A SITE WHERE FOLKS LIKE MYSELF WITH THE SAME BALL JOINT PROBLEMS, SOME WITH ACCIDENTS, WERE TRYING TO GET NHTSA TO DO SOMETHING. I GUESS PEOPLE ACTUALLY HAVE TO DIE FIRST BEFORE NHTSA WILL STEP IN AND TELL AN AUTO MANUFACTURER THEY NEED TO FIX THEIR FAULTY PRODUCTS. I ALSO LEARNED THAT THE 1998-2000 DURANGOS WERE BUILT ON THE DODGE DAKOTA PICKUP CHASSIS. A DAKOTA WEIGHS ABOUT 4,600 LBS. WHILE A DURANGO 4X4 WEIGHS IN AT 6,400 LBS. IT'S NO WONDER THE 1998-2000 DURANGO FRONT-ENDS WERE FALLING APART. SERIOUSLY, WHAT KIND OF IDIOT ENGINEERS DOES DODGE HAVE WORKING FOR THEM. SOMETIME LATER I HEARD THAT DODGE RUSHED THE DURANGO INTO PRODUCTION IN 1998 TO COMPETE FOR THE SUV MARKET BUCKS AND DIDN'T HAVE TIME TO ENGINEER A NEW CHASSIS SO THEY JUST MODIFIED THE DAKOTA CHASSIS WITHOUT BEEFING IT UP. WHEN PEOPLE STARTED TO COMPLAIN ABOUT BALL JOINTS AND SUCH, THEY BUILT A WHOLE NEW CHASSIS FOR DURANGOS IN 2001. I STUMBLED ACROSS THIS SITE TODAY WHILE RESEARCHING ANOTHER VEHICLE I'M THINKING ABOUT BUYING.

ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC),SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-02-28
  • Components: ELECTRONIC STABILITY CONTROL (ESC),SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: NYLE MAXWELL DODGE SUPERCENTER IN AUSTIN TEXAS WAS PAID TO FIX MY SENSOR LIGHT FOR THE ANTILOCK BRAKE SYSTEM WHICH COMES ON CONTINUOUSLY AND STAYS ON 100 PERCENT OF THE TIME. I WAS TOLD THAT THEY NEEDED TO REPLACE A SENSOR WHICH WOULD COST JUST OVER $1100, AND WAS REQUIRED TO SIGN OFF ON A FORM SO THEY COULD BEGIN THE WORK. AFTER THEY HAD MY DODGE DURANGO A COUPLE OF DAYS, FEBRUARY 27, 2013, I GOT A PHONE CALL FROM SERVICE TO SAY THEY COULD NOT COMPLETELY FIX THE PROBLEM AND THAT THE LIGHT STILL COMES ON "INTERMITTENTLY". THEIR EXPLANATION WAS CONFUSING. SO I BELIEVE THAT I UNDERSTAND FROM THIS, IF THE WARNING LIGHT IS ON THAT THE ABS BRAKE WILL NOT BE WORKING AT ALL. AFTER THIS, I WAS GIVEN AN OPTION OF PAYING ANOTHER $350 FOR A SEPARATE PART, PERHAPS "MODULE" AND THE SERVICE MAN FELT IT WOULD BE THE SOLUTION. I COLLECTED MY CAR WITHOUT NYLE MAXWELL DODGE SUPERCENTER HAVING FIXED THIS $1100 ISSUE. BUT I PAID THEIR BILL. (I NEED TO TAKE IT SOMEWHERE FOR A SECOND UNBIASED OPINION.) AS A CUSTOMER/CONSUMER OF THEIR SERVICE AGREEMENT, I SHOULD HAVE THE RIGHT TO EXPECT THEM TO FIX IT FROM HERE ON OUT TO COMPLETION AT THE EXPENSE OF NYLE MAXWELL DODGE SUPERCENTER; OR REFUND ME. *TR

CHECKED THE INTERNET AND FOUND COUNTLESS NUMBER OF BLOGS AND COMMENTS ON THIS EXACT PROBLEM, WITH SOME SAYING THEIR SEAT IS ACTUALLY SLIDING BACK AND FORTH ON THE SEAT RAILS. THIS IS A KNOWN PROBLEM AND I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT THIS IS NOT A SAFETY ISSUE, WARRANTING SOME RECALL OR REMEDY BY CHRYSLER. IF THIS SEAT CAN SLIDE FREE IN A HARD ACCELERATION OR EMERGENCY STOP, THIS COULD CREATE ACCIDENT OR SEVERE INJURY. THIS HAS NOT BEEN ADDRESSED BY THE MANUFACTURER ! *TR

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 6 recalls for different components of the 1998 Dodge Durango.

2006-03-15
  • Manufacturer: K&N ENGINEERING, INC.
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: CERTAIN REPLACEMENT K&N FUEL PERFORMANCE KITS, P/NOS. 57-1509, 57-1511, 57-1511-1, 57-1517, 57-1517-1, 57-1527, AND 57-1530. ALSO, A SMALL PERCENTAGE OF THESE KITS WERE SOLD UNDER THE MOPAR PERFORMANCE PARTS BRAND NAME (P/NOS. P5007069 AND P5007070). ALL KITS WERE MANUFACTURED FROM APRIL 20, 1999, THROUGH SEPTEMBER 23, 2004. THESE ASSEMBLIES WERE MANUFACTURED AS REPLACEMENT EQUIPMENT FOR CERTAIN DODGE PICKUP TRUCKS AND SUVS. A SMALL PIECE OF MATERIAL FROM THE TUBE WALL COULD BE SUCKED INTO THE ENGINE THROTTLE BODY, WHICH COULD CAUSE THE THROTTLE TO BECOME JAMMED IN THE OPEN POSITION.
  • Consequence: A JAMMED OPEN THROTTLE COULD CAUSE UNINTENDED ACCELERATION OF THE VEHICLE, POSSIBLY RESULTING IN A CRASH OR INCREASED STOPING DISTANCES WHEN BRAKING.
  • Remedy: K&N WILL PROVIDE OWNERS WITH A FREE REPAIR KIT ALONG WITH REPAIR INSTRUCTIONS. THE RECALL BEGAN ON APRIL 20, 2006.
2006-03-13
  • Manufacturer: BRAKE PARTS, INC.
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
  • Summary: CERTAIN AFTERMARKET BRAKE HYDRAULIC MASTER CYLINDERS SOLD AS REPLACEMENT BRAKE CYLINDERS FOR CERTAIN FORD, DAIMLERCHRYSLER, AND JEEP PASSENGER VEHICLES. THESE BRAKE CYLINDERS WERE SOLD UNDER THE BRAND NAMES OF NAPA, RAYBESTOS, AIMCO, AC DELCO, CARQUEST, BENDIX, AND WAGNER. ONLY PRODUCTS THAT WERE MANUFACTURED FROM JULY 27, 2005 THROUGH JANUARY 17, 2006 (DATE CODES 0529 THROUGH 0602) ARE SUBJECT TO THIS RECALL. WHEN SUBJECT TO VERY COLD TEMPERATURES, AN INTERNAL SEAL IN THE MASTER CYLINDER COULD LOSE FLEXIBILITY AND MAY CAUSE BRAKE FLUID TO LEAK.
  • Consequence: LOSS OF BRAKE FLUID CAN LEAD TO A DECREASE IN BRAKE LINE PRESSURE AND AN INCREASE IN STOPPING DISTANCE, WHICH CAN RESULT IN A VEHICLE CRASH.
  • Remedy: AFFINIA (BRAKE PARTS, INC.) WILL REPLACE THE SUBJECT BRAKE HYDRAULIC MASTER CYLINDERS FREE OF CHARGE. THE RECALL BEGAN ON MARCH 20, 2006. OWNERS CAN CONTACT AFFINA GROUP CUSTOMER SERVICE AT 1-800-323-0354.

IMPORTANT: VEHICLES THAT HAVE ALREADY HAD THE PROPER CLOCKSPRING INSTALLED, ACCORDING TO WARRANTY RECORDS, HAVE BEEN EXCLUDED FROM THIS RECALL. IN ADDITION, 1997-2000 MODEL YEAR VEHICLES THAT HAVE HAD A SUSPECT REPLACEMENT CLOCKSPRING INSTALLED, ACCORDING TO WARRANTY RECORDS, HAVE BEEN ADDED TO THIS RECALL.
  • Consequence: WHEN THIS OCCURS, THE MATERIAL COULD INTERFERE WITH THE CLOCKSPRING RIBBON AND CAUSE AN OPEN CIRCUIT. THE DRIVER AIR BAG SYSTEM WILL BECOME DISABLED, AND THE AIR BAG WARNING LAMP WILL ILLUMINATE ON THE INSTRUMENT PANEL.
  • Remedy: DEALERS WILL REPLACE THE CLOCKSPRING ASSEMBLY. OWNER NOTIFICATION BEGAN JUNE 18, 2001. ALSO SOME 1997-200 MODEL YEAR VEHICLES THAT, ACCORDING TO WARRANTY RECORDS, HAVE HAD A SUSPECT REPLACEMENT CLOCKSPRING INSTALLED, WILL ALSO BE INCLUDED IN THIS CAMPAIGN. VEHICLES THAT SHOW CONTACT AND HAVE LESS THAN 45,000 MILES AND NO SIGNS OF RED RUST WILL HAVE THE RUBBER ISOLATOR INSTALLED WITH SILICONE TO PROTECT THE TUBE WHERE THE COATING HAS WORN OFF. VEHICLES THAT EXHIBIT CONTACT, AND HAVE MORE THAN 45,000 MILES OR SHOW SIGNS OF RED RUST, WILL HAVE THE BRAKE TUBE REPLACED WITH THE PRODUCTION TUBE AND ISOLATOR.

Negative 1998 Dodge Durango car reviews

The vehicle has impressive pulling power and torque. While there have been some reliability issues, they are usually minor. Unfortunately, the gas mileage is not great. On the bright side, it is great for climbing and mud. I personally know several people who own Dodge 4x4s, including some with Durangos, and they all agree that the transmissions tend to not last longer than 140k miles.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with my Durango. I bought it used and had my mechanic check it out before taking it on a long trip (I know, maybe not the smartest move!). When I went to get the alignment done, I found out that the ball joints were bad. Luckily, they were covered under warranty and were replaced twice, the second time being 10K miles later. While the inside is nice, I did have some trouble with the power windows around 130k miles. Despite keeping up with maintenance, I did have to replace the ball joints again last summer. Unfortunately, the 4WD has gone out at 202K miles. On the bright side, I've had some great adventures in my Durango! How has your experience been with your car?

This car has had poor performance, uncomfortable seats, unsafe brakes, miserable gas mileage, and a flimsy and unreliable build. However, it is important to note that these issues are not a reflection of my driving ability or maintenance habits. Despite my initial enthusiasm for this car, it has unfortunately been in and out of the shop for most of its life. As a confident driver, I know that I deserve a vehicle that is safe, reliable, and efficient.

I have experienced several issues with my vehicle, including multiple battery replacements, lower ball joint replacements, air conditioner and rear wiper motor replacements, as well as the replacement of all four power window motors and a transmission sensor. Additionally, I have had to replace several wheel studs. Fortunately, most of these repairs were covered under warranty. Currently, I am experiencing the common 'rocking chair' issue with the driver's seat that many other Durango owners have also noticed.

The ride quality of this truck could be improved. I had to replace the ball joints at 37,000 miles and the heater core at 47,000 miles, which were both major expenses. I have owned other 4x4 trucks that performed better. I had some disagreements with the dealership, but overall they were helpful. It would be great if Dodge could improve the durability of their trucks. Thank you for considering my feedback.

If you plan on keeping this vehicle for a while, it might be a good idea to consider purchasing the extended warranty. Although things don't break frequently, some items can be costly to replace. On the bright side, this SUV has great styling and a comfortable ride. It also has a lot of cargo room and good power with the smaller V8. Additionally, the Infinity sound system is awesome! However, there have been some issues with the ball joints, which have had to be replaced four times at a cost of $1000 per visit. Unfortunately, there have also been some A/C problems that started at 55000 miles and the dealership has been unable to figure it out.

  2. Julius Purdy 2024-09-07

Hi there! I'm glad to hear that you've had a great experience with your SUV. It's impressive that you've only had to spend $600 on repairs, including tires, over the past 3 years. Although you've had a couple of issues with an expensive front end alignment and a crank shaft sensor, it sounds like overall it's been a reliable vehicle for you.

  3. Sam Schmeler 2024-08-06

Four years ago, my wife threatened to divorce me if I bought my Durango. I bought the Durango and she left. I still like the truck better than her. The gas mileage keeps improving with age. The Durango now has 91K and gets about 18.3 mpg on a straight run @ 70 mph. It has been very reliable with few major repairs. The truck pulls my sailboat (~3600 lbs) with ease. The truck is great on out-of-state hockey trips for my son. It has loads of cargo room for handling goalie equipment. The third seat is great, reducing inter-sibling fights by 40% when kids sit in different seats. I love my truck, and would buy another Durango.

  4. Ryleigh Gleason 2024-08-02

I can tell you really love your Durango! Even though you're not a big fan of Dodge, it sounds like your truck is perfect for your family. It has plenty of room without being too bulky and doesn't drive like an SUV. It's great to hear that you're very comfortable in it.

  5. Brycen Langosh 2024-07-23

Congratulations on owning your first American-made vehicle! It sounds like your Durango has been an excellent investment for both long road trips and daily commutes. With 88,000 miles in just 4 years, it's clear that this vehicle is both dependable and durable. The fully loaded 5.9 V8 engine and upgraded shocks and tires make for an extremely comfortable and fast ride. It's great to hear that you've had no major repairs and have only needed scheduled maintenance. Plus, with a great stereo system, it's the perfect touring vehicle. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with the Durango!
