The Dodge Durango is a mid-size/full-size SUV produced by Dodge starting with the 1998 model year. The first two generations were very similar in that both were based on the Dodge Dakota and Dodge Ram, both featured a body-on-frame construction and both were produced at the Newark Assembly Plant in Newark, Delaware through the 2009 model year.

The third-generation Durango began with the 2011 model year. It is built on the same platform as the Jeep Grand Cherokee, features unibody construction, and has been assembled at the Jefferson North Assembly Plant in Detroit, Michigan since late 2010.

Each generation had options for different engine sizes and power ratings, with different transmissions also. In 2009 a hybrid variant was introduced, but ended quickly with the second generation Durango. From 2007 to 2009 the Durango was available as the Chrysler Aspen from Chrysler. Over two million Durangos have been sold since it was introduced in 1998.

ENGINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-27
  • VIN: 1C4RDHDGXEC
  • Components: ENGINE
  • Summary: A new 3.6 Pentastar engine was installed in my 2014 Dodge Durango in July 2019, this repair was over $5,000 and FCA only granted a $1300 goodwill towards the cost. After maintaining the vehicle with a new engine in it, this engine is now failing too. The problem is due to the right cylinder head being damaged. This has caused a knocking noise emitting from the engine and rough idling whenever the vehicle is on. A tune up was done last year in December when check engine light came on, with new spark plugs and filters put in but this has not solved the issued. Taking the vehicle back to mechanic to do further diagnostic, a pressure test was done showing the 6 cylinder had no pressure. A damage head with possible damage to crankshaft rods and rocker arms. This vehicle is our main vehicle for our family, and the price to repair this damage on the second engine this car has had is too high. If we continue driving this vehicle, we would result in total power failure, worst case a blown engine. Complaints have been filed with Attorney General of the state of Florida along with the Better Business Bureau.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-15
  • VIN: 1C4SDJET5EC
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING,SERVICE BRAKES
  • Summary: The rear light bar in my vehicle has repeatedly failed in my nine years of ownership. It first occurred in 2015 under the 36,000-mile warranty, followed by three more failures every two years, with the latest at 84,000 miles in 2024. This issue is tied to a design flaw. The light bar is prone to water ingress, causing light source failure and attributed to a manufacturing defect by the dealership. The cost of replacement is $2,100, and Arapahoe Dodge in Centennial, CO, acknowledges it as a widespread problem in Dodge vehicles with this part. Despite replacements, the issue persists, calling for a recall to redesign and replace the faulty units. Functioning as a crucial safety component in the braking system, the failure of the brake light significantly increases the risk of rear-end collisions. I initiated a ticket with Chrysler, but the representative lacked knowledge. Suggestions of a factory technician assisting at the dealership were met with uncertainty. There are no warning signs before the LED fails, with water accumulation being the only indicator. In summary, the recurring failure of the light bar poses a significant safety risk, acknowledged by the dealership. The cost of replacement is substantial, warranting a recall for redesign. Communication gaps with Chrysler and the lack of warning signs compound the issue, emphasizing the urgency for resolution.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-01-20
  • VIN: 1C4RDJDG6EC
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: The “racetrack” tail light on my wifes Durango is completely burnt out due to water infiltration in the assembly, which is a now known issue for multiple drivers of a Durango. With that being said, since it’s been burnt out, my wife has almost been rear ended 3 times now and I believe it could have something to do with 90% of tail lights that is equipped with the vehicle is now burnt out due to a flaw in manufacturing. It is also a $1000+ repair being you have to replace the entire assembly. Her application of the brakes would be more well known if the entire assembly illuminated and make safer driving conditions for her and others. I understand the product needs replaced but with it being a now known flaw, I don’t believe it should be at the expenses of the vehicle owners.

EXTERIOR LIGHTING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-31
  • VIN: 1C4RDJAG0EC
  • Components: EXTERIOR LIGHTING
  • Summary: Due to the 2014 dodge Durango not having a proper seal on them the race track light on my 2014 dodge Durango has been halfway burnt out and there is no reason for me to have to pay $1200 when this is a safety hazard this should be a recalled this is ridiculous. It is not safe it could cause electrical fire a short I’ve worked for emergency services and I will tell you now if your lights on the back of your car do not work properly, it is very highly dangerous.

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2020-05-22
  • Fire: 1
  • VIN: 1C4RDHDG8EC
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: The contact owns a 2014 Dodge Durango. The contact stated that he was observing that an oil stain was showing on his driveway. The contact stated no warning light was illuminated. The contact had taken the vehicle to an independent mechanic who diagnosed and determined that the oil filter adapter housing needed to be replaced. The vehicle was repaired. However, the contact observed that the oil leak had reoccurred. The contact had taken the vehicle back to the same mechanic who replaced the oil filter adapter housing again, however, the failure reoccurred. The contact returned to the same mechanic who advised that the adapter filter was manufactured with an aluminum housing and no longer in plastic. The contact stated that the mechanic was test-driving the vehicle after he had installed the aluminum oil filter adapter housing. The contact stated that the mechanic advised he was driving at approximately 30 MPH when the vehicle began emitting smoke. The contact was advised by the mechanic that he pulled off of the roadway, and turned the vehicle off, but was unable to open the hood due to flames. The fire department was called and they extinguished the flames. The vehicle was towed back to the mechanic's shop. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 150,000.

SEATS PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-30
  • Number Of Injuries: 1
  • VIN: 1C4RDHDG3EC
  • Components: SEATS
  • Summary: While driving down the interstate, the passenger headrest deployed and hit my husband in the back of the head, jarring him and hurting his neck. This is the second time this has happened, the first time was on the driver’s side and dodge repaired the issue. The plastic clips holding the metal latching mechanism snapped and the headrest deployed. I called the dealership and was told there were no recalls. There were no warning lights or signs that this was going to happen. At this time I have not turned it into insurance or filed a police report because it was a faulty piece of equipment within the car. If this would have happened on the driver side, it could have caused a wreck or knocked the driver unconscious. Even in the passenger seat, this causes serious injury concerns to the neck and head.

Thank you for sharing your experience with us! It's great to hear that the vehicle has been perfect for your family, despite the expensive repairs. We're glad that you purchased an extended warranty to help cover those costs.

I switched from a 2012 Suburban to a 2014 Durango due to better MPG. I purchased it in April of 2014. Unfortunately, when I reached around 19000 miles, I experienced some issues with the gears. I took it to the dealership, and although they kept it for 2 days, the issue persisted. They kept it for another 3 days after the second incident, but the problem still persisted. As I needed the car for an out-of-town trip, I had to wait until I returned to take it back to the dealership. It has now been there for a month, and I had to get a new transmission for my new car. Despite the dealership's efforts, Chrysler made them go through a series of steps to try to fix the issue. Unfortunately, I have decided to switch back to a big SUV as I am done with Dodge.

Love it! It rides so smoothly and has great speed.

Let's face it, a $50,000-list SUV should be comfortable and powerful. Fortunately, my relatives and friends love riding in this one. I actually own the Citadel 8-cyl AWD, which has been a great purchase. This vehicle is definitely a luxury item, but it lives up to its stated MPG (I get 15 in the City and 22 on the Highway when using Cruise Control). Reliability has been good, with no unexpected visits to a service department. While the auto-dimming headlights work a little strangely in bumper-to-bumper traffic, often mistaking the car in front of me as a 'dark sky' and momentarily flashing its lights, the interior Climate Control has been a small struggle to get just right. However, driving it has been comfortable and fun! I love driving a V8!! And I can actually get in the thing! Have you ever noticed how many compacts and mid-size cars are seemingly built to keep a grown adult OUT of the driver's seat? Oh, my aching back and neck when I try to fit inside those. The sandstone (goldy-beige) color with the extra chrome of the dressy Citadel package is often stunning, to me. I get far more compliments on this SUV than any other vehicle I've ever owned (except that used '65 Corvette that nearly put me in the Poor House in my 20s).

My husband and I upgraded to the 2014 Durango R/T in November 2014 and we couldn't be happier with it. With about 4500 miles on it so far, the Durango has proven to be a great investment. We needed a 3rd rower with our 2nd child on the way and the Durango's spacious interior is definitely an upgrade from our previous 2013 Toyota Venza. It's been a great help, especially with our picky 3-year-old who needs plenty of leg room. This SUV offers great value for money and has completely changed our opinion of Dodge. We had no issues with the vehicle so far and we're looking forward to many more happy miles in it.

It's a beautiful vehicle, but I'm not sure if a high-end Dodge is the best choice. Dodge seems to still be figuring out how to implement gadgets properly. However, the gas mileage is shockingly good if you manually shift. The acceleration on the six-cylinder is not as good as I had hoped (my wife purchased the car when I was out of town), but it's not horrible. Unfortunately, the tow rating is too low, so now I have to buy a truck to tow the camper I want. During a summer road trip from Texas, the A/C went out, and the dealership support was unsympathetic and very poor. After multiple trips to dealerships on the trip, it was finally fixed. The equalizer settings are quirky, as turning down the bass turns up the midrange, and Dodge cannot seem to figure it out. Additionally, the plastic trim on the dash near the windshield sticks up and looks ugly, even after Dodge replaced it with a new piece that is the same. Overall, I love the vehicle, but Dodge has some things to figure out, particularly on a 48k list vehicle.

Our car is a V8 Citadel AWD. I'm not sure why you couldn't select that combination during the review process. The V8 engine is fantastic, it sounds great, has great power, and running through the 8 gears at half throttle is a lot of fun. We haven't had any real problems after 2.5 years, just had to change a turn signal bulb. The car is very comfortable and quiet. Despite hearing about the bad quality of Dodge vehicles, I have not experienced any issues. The U connect system is fast and easy to use. I love the heated seats and steering wheel in the winter. The radar cruise control is also great, adjusting the speed as needed according to the traffic in front of you. At the time of purchase, I thought this feature was a waste of money, but on long trips, it is great. With the generous discounts, you just can't get this much value out of other brands.
