2009 Dodge Durango problems

dodge logo

The Dodge Durango is a mid-size/full-size SUV produced by Dodge starting with the 1998 model year. The first two generations were very similar in that both were based on the Dodge Dakota and Dodge Ram, both featured a body-on-frame construction and both were produced at the Newark Assembly Plant in Newark, Delaware through the 2009 model year.

The third-generation Durango began with the 2011 model year. It is built on the same platform as the Jeep Grand Cherokee, features unibody construction, and has been assembled at the Jefferson North Assembly Plant in Detroit, Michigan since late 2010.

Each generation had options for different engine sizes and power ratings, with different transmissions also. In 2009 a hybrid variant was introduced, but ended quickly with the second generation Durango. From 2007 to 2009 the Durango was available as the Chrysler Aspen from Chrysler. Over two million Durangos have been sold since it was introduced in 1998.

Common 2009 Dodge Durango problems

Based on the information gathered from the sources provided, here is a list of common problems reported by owners of the Dodge Durango 2009:

  1. Poor AC Performance due to Refrigerant Leak: Owners of Dodge Durangos from 1998 to 2003, 2005, 2006, 2012, 2014, and 2018 have experienced poor AC performance caused by a refrigerant leak from the AC condenser. This issue can be resolved by replacing the AC condenser, costing between $40 to $150 plus labor fees.
  2. Musty Odor from HVAC System: Dodge Durangos from 1999 to 2016 have been plagued by a musty odor emanating from the HVAC system. This smell, resembling strong mildew, is noticeable when the heater or AC is in use. Dodge offers a disinfectant and evaporator coating to combat bacterial growth causing the odor.
  3. Intermittent Automatic Locks: First- (2000-2003) and third-generation (2011-2015) Durangos have experienced issues with automatic locks intermittently locking and unlocking, especially in damp conditions like car washes. Owners often need to replace the door and liftgate lock cylinder switches to resolve this issue, costing $15 to $50 plus labor.
  4. Faulty Totally Integrated Power Module (TIPM): The 2011 Dodge Durango faced problems with a faulty TIPM, the electronic power relay center of the vehicle. Malfunctions in the TIPM can lead to various electronic issues, such as warning lights coming on and the SUV refusing to start. Dodge issued a recall (#P54) for 2011 Durangos with 3.6L or 5.7L engines to replace the TIPMs.

These issues highlight common problems faced by owners of the Dodge Durango 2009, ranging from AC performance and musty odors to automatic lock malfunctions and electronic power module failures. Addressing these concerns promptly can help maintain the performance and reliability of the vehicle.

IN JANUARY 2013, THE SAME SYMPTOMS RETURNED. THIS TIME AFTER TURNING THE VEHICLE OFF, THE VEHICLE WOULD NOT START AT ALL. THE VEHICLE WAS TOWED TO A LOCAL CHRYSLER DEALER AND THE SAME PROBLEM WAS DIAGNOSED. THIS TIME I WAS TOLD IT WAS CAUSED BY THE "WATER FROM MY BOOTS." THE FACT THAT THIS JUNCTION BOX IS ABOVE THE FLOOR LINE MAKES THAT EXPLANATION IMPLAUSIBLE. THE COST TO REPLACE PARTS AND LABOR, $ 775.00. *TR

Negative 2009 Dodge Durango car reviews

  1. Jordyn Homenick 2024-10-04

I must admit that the Durango is not very fuel-efficient. However, I really like this vehicle, especially as a mom of two young boys. It's a stylish and practical mommy wagon with leather interior, an mp3 multi-disc player, and a lovely maroon color with silver details. The third row seat is roomy and there's plenty of storage. The Durango handles great and has a very powerful v8 engine, making it fun to drive. The only other issue I've encountered is that sometimes the gas cap doesn't make a good seal, which causes the service engine light to come on temporarily. I plan to stop by my dealership to have that problem taken care of.

  2. Jerrell Goldner 2024-07-29

I've owned my Durango for almost a year now and have driven 15,600 miles. The Durango is comfortable, roomy, and the kids love the DVD and 3rd row options. It can seat 5 adults and 2 kids comfortably. However, I have noticed that the fuel economy is poor, even with the V-6 engine. I spend about $80 every 5 days, and I work from home! Additionally, the acceleration with the 6 cyl is poor. The resale value is also not great. I tried trading it in this week on a more economical vehicle, and it is only bringing $10,000 on trade (original MSRP $27,000). I will not be buying another one. Furthermore, there seems to be an issue with the transmission and a rattle in the back somewhere. In comparison, my '01 Tahoe (V-8) was far superior in fuel economy, quality, and performance.

This SUV model has not met my expectations. Despite being a limited 07 model with 40,000 miles, it has had recurring transmission issues and problems with the power back door. Additionally, the car's build quality is not up to par, and it has a tendency to get scratched easily. I believe that these issues should be addressed by the manufacturer to improve the overall quality of the vehicle.

The interior of the vehicle does not have the stain-resistant fabric that was advertised. Additionally, the fabric has marks that cannot be removed, which is disappointing. The door handles do not match, and the seat belt harnesses have fallen apart. The plastic on the driver's side seat is also breaking. While the vehicle is not fuel-efficient, it is still a reliable mode of transportation. However, the gas cap does not make a good seal, which can cause the service engine light to come on frequently. The transmission can experience a lag when driving, and driving up steep driveways can be challenging. Overall, there are some areas for improvement, but the vehicle is still a decent option for transportation.

Hello, we hope this message finds you well. We wanted to bring to your attention a concern we have with the vehicle. We have noticed that when the rear windows are open at speeds over 35 mph, the vehicle steering column and doors vibrate and shake. We contacted the dealership and were informed that it is a design flaw that cannot be fixed. At highway speeds, the passenger compartment fills with turbulent air causing a 'parachute' like response which lifts the rear of the vehicle, making it unstable to drive at highway speeds. The only solution available is to keep the windows closed. We understand that this may be frustrating, especially considering the price we paid for the vehicle. Additionally, we have experienced an issue where it pops out of reverse every 10th drive or so. We appreciate your attention to this matter and look forward to finding a solution together. Thank you for your time.

I hope you're doing well! I just wanted to share my experience with my Durango. I've had it for 4 years now and it has been such a reliable car. I love how spacious it is, especially since I have a big family. I haven't had any complaints so far!

What a fantastic vehicle! This truck drives and handles like a luxury car and is so quiet. It's great to hear that you're getting almost 19 MPG on the highway too. I'm surprised that these trucks aren't advertised more. It sounds like it gives you plenty of room to travel with a family of 4 and a large dog.

I test drove the Limited model with the intention of buying a cheaper model. However, after the test drive, I was completely hooked! The leather interior, Hemi power, and mygig w/rear tv for the kids are all features that I decided we had to have. The laminated glass really makes it quiet inside, and the Hemi power and 18

I went with my mom to the local dodge dealer to help her pick out her van and saw a Durango staring back at me! Needless to say, I am now the proud owner of an SUV on 'Roids! It is so easy to drive, handles like a dream, and looks awesome. I absolutely love the 3rd row seats - my 13-year-old, who is 5'7

You've owned your Dodge Durango Night Runner for three years already, and it has 37,000 miles on it. It's impressive that you're still so happy with it! The best part about this truck is the HEMI engine - it has great power and performance, and of course, great fuel mileage for a V8. You've never experienced any mechanical problems or any kind of problems, and the only times it visits the dealer is for service. It's very comfortable for those long trips, and it's built tough. Thanks for sharing your positive experience with us!
