Subaru Legacy problems

The Subaru Legacy (Japanese: スバル・レガシィ, Hepburn: Subaru Regashi) is a mid-size car built by Japanese automobile manufacturer Subaru since 1989. The maker's flagship car, it is unique in its class for offering all-wheel drive as a standard feature, and Subaru's traditional boxer engine. The Legacy was sold as the Liberty in Australia out of deference to Legacy Australia, an organisation dedicated to caring for the families of military service veterans.
In 1996, a variant of the Legacy with heightened suspension called the Legacy Outback was introduced to compete in the burgeoning sport-utility vehicle class and proved to be a sales success for Subaru. The Outback line was split into its own model in 2008, known as the Subaru Outback.
As of 2008, 3.6 million Legacy models have been built since its 1989 introduction.
Production of the Legacy ended in Japan in June 2020, with the sixth-generation Legacy being the last model produced and marketed in Japan. Subaru of America announced in an internal email that 2025 will be the last model year for the Subaru Legacy. The Subaru Outback will remain in production, after being the company's top selling model in 2023.

Common Subaru Legacy problems
The Subaru Legacy is a popular mid-sized sedan known for its dependability and excellent safety features. However, like any vehicle, it can experience certain issues. Here are some common problems reported by Subaru Legacy owners:
- CVT Transmission Problems: Older models of the Subaru Legacy, particularly those with Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT), have been reported to experience rumbling, stalling, and sudden stopping. A growling noise from the engine upon acceleration can also be a warning sign of a Subaru Legacy transmission problem. Fluid seepage, a pause after pressing on the gas, and the engine revving without accelerating are other notable red flags.
- Torque Converter Problems: The torque converter, which converts energy produced by the engine and sends it to the transmission, can cause slipping transmission at low speed, poor fuel economy, and various noises from the engine. These problems can be traced back to low or dirty transmission fluid, loose torque converter bolts, and worn clutches.
- Hood Latch Problems: Many Subaru Legacy owners have reported issues with the hood latch, which can become loose while driving at highway speeds. This can cause the hood to bob up and down, obstructing the driver's view of the road and potentially cracking or breaking the windshield.
- Excessive Oil Consumption: Some Subaru Legacy models, particularly those from 2010 to 2014, have been reported to consume excessive oil. Drivers have noted that the engine uses about a quart of oil every 1200 miles, which can increase maintenance costs and potentially harm the engine.
- Faulty Airbags: Some Subaru Legacy owners have reported issues with the airbags, which can fail to deploy in the event of a collision. This can pose a significant safety risk to the vehicle's occupants.
- Eyesight Faults: The Subaru Legacy's Eyesight system, which uses cameras and sensors to monitor the road and assist with braking and steering, can experience faults and fail to function properly. This can reduce the vehicle's safety features and make it more difficult to drive.
- Unintended Acceleration: Some Subaru Legacy owners have reported issues with unintended acceleration, where the vehicle suddenly speeds up without the driver's input. This can pose a significant safety risk and make it difficult to control the vehicle.
- Glitchy Infotainment System: The Subaru Legacy's infotainment system, which includes the radio, navigation, and climate control, can experience glitches and malfunctions. This can make it difficult to use the system and reduce the vehicle's functionality.
- Melting Dashboard: Some Subaru Legacy owners have reported issues with the dashboard melting, particularly in models from 2010 to 2012. This can create an offensive chemical smell and obstruct the driver's view of the road.
- Transmission Problems: Transmission issues have been reported in various Subaru Legacy models, including shuddering, vibrating, and stalling. These problems can be expensive to repair and pose a significant safety risk.
It is important to note that while these issues have been reported by some Subaru Legacy owners, they do not necessarily affect all vehicles of this make and model. Prospective buyers should do their own research and consider factors such as the vehicle's age, mileage, and maintenance history when making a purchasing decision.

- Summary: Under Subaru campaign WQK47, which supersedes an earlier campaign, 05-09 Legacy/Outback and other models are known to undergo accelerated brake line corrosion due to sub-par materials and design. Subaru of America's "fix" for this issue is to inspect the lines: if the lines are compromised, they replace them. If the lines are corroded but not yet compromised, the lines are coated with an anti-corrosion wax. This wax washes off the car and is ineffective. Subaru performed this recall work insufficiently on my vehicle, failing to identify the severity of the corrosion. They coated the lines, called it "fixed", and the brake lines later ruptured under normal driving conditions. This caused a highway near-miss at speed that could have impacted everyone on the road. Multiple Subaru dealerships in Connecticut have refused to re-inspect and repair the vehicle under the recall campaign, despite it being a known critical safety concern, and despite knowledge that the original parts and anti-corrosion application are sub-par. They insist that because the ineffective recall campaign was already "completed", they bear no further responsibility for the design compromises and sub-par materials that are the root cause of this issue. Additionally: Under Subaru bulletin 12-197-16R the dashboard of 05-09 Subaru Legacy/Outback models is known to become sticky and melt. While this might initially be considered a cosmetic issue, the melted surface is DRAMATICALLY reflective. The hump over the gauge cluster melts first, causing a huge, intense sun glare reflection in the windscreen directly ahead of the driver. I own two 05-09 Subaru Legacies; this issue is present in both. Subaru of America has rejected my replacement claims on both cars because the cutoff date for their open recall has expired. This is a major and constantly worsening safety issue that severely limits driver visibility. Because it developed slowly, it was not a safety concern until after closure of the recall.

Vehicle year: 2016
I came to the Legacy in a very unusual way. I wasn't interested in buying a middle-of-the-road sedan, as I had my heart set on purchasing either an F-150 or a 4-Runner (my previous vehicle). However, after being without a car for nearly two months and seeing the $40k price tag of trucks/SUVs, I decided to get a car and then buy a truck as a second vehicle later on. When it comes to cars, I usually prefer hatchbacks, but I wasn't a fan of the pokey 2.0 engine in the Crosstrek/Impreza. I also looked at some other sedans, but what I love about Subarus is the large pass-through from the trunk to the back seats when they're folded down. It's easy to fit my bike in, and there's plenty of cargo space. The interior is also very spacious, and I appreciated the extra cabin space and room around the driver (remember, this is the same platform as the Outback). For $25k, it came with features that more expensive vehicles didn't have (homelink, all-weather car mats, heated seats, AWD). I was considering the 3.6 limited, but since this was just a 'commuter car,' I didn't want to spend another $7k for the bigger engine and leather. I've also been pleasantly surprised by the acceleration of the 2.5 engine when paired with the CVT. It's much better than what I remember when driving other people's Subarus. Plus, I'm averaging 30mpg with 90% city driving! So when I say I love my grandma car, I mean it's a 4-cylinder sedan that can haul lots of stuff, gets great gas mileage, and is very comfortable in town as well as on the highway. I also looked at the Honda Accord, Mazda 6, and VW GLI and VW GTI (which I've previously owned). All of those cars have their positives, but overall, I liked the space and cargo capacity of this one. I also appreciate the easy/simple LCD display, traditional tachometer/speedometer, and well-designed ergonomics. The Legacy is a great practical car that offers spaciousness and cargo capacity. Although the CVT transmission can be a little rough when decelerating/going downhill at certain speeds, it is hardly noticeable otherwise. The stock speakers were not the best, but I upgraded mine and it made a huge difference. Additionally, the Legacy has excellent resale value, which is typical of most Japanese brands. Overall, it is one of the best sedans out there. While it may not win any fun awards, it is definitely worth considering. Update: After a year of ownership, I sold mine to buy a vehicle with cash. Although there is a little gas penalty for AWD compared to something like an Accord, the comfort of the Legacy and driving experience is excellent!

This car is a great value for the price! While it may not have the most horsepower or the fanciest interior, it still offers plenty of pep for everyday driving and passing. The exterior is beautiful and the leather interior is top notch. I frequently take trips to northern Vermont for skiing and have had no problems with this car. It tears through snow, is comfortable for lengthy drives, has a good sound system, and is overall a safe car with airbags and other safety features.

I purchased my car for $300 with 305000 miles on it. Unfortunately, the throttle position sensor was faulty, causing the transmission to shift roughly. However, I was able to replace it for $120 and it worked perfectly afterwards. Although the car lacks horsepower and torque, it has some great features such as a good stereo system, strong A/C, comfortable seats, and plenty of room in the back. Despite living in Wisconsin, where rust is a common issue, the car only has minor rust around the wheel wells. I also find the car to be visually appealing. If you are considering purchasing a similar car, I recommend finding one with significantly fewer miles and ensuring that the Throttle Position Sensor is functioning properly, as well as checking the exhaust pipe. It is important to note that these Subarus are known for transmission issues, so be cautious.

I work for a company that has a few Subarus. Before I started working there, I never would have considered owning one. However, now I wouldn't have it any other way! One of the office Subarus has over 220,000+ miles on it (99 Impreza, MT) and another has 130,000+ miles on it (05 Impreza, MT). I've even driven the 05 'like I stole it'! We make sure to change the oil and rotate the tires regularly. When I chose my Legacy, I went for the 5 speed MT option as it has a lower overall ownership cost and I can control the MPG a little more than with an AT - it's not controlled by a computer. I don't quite understand the mileage rating from Subaru, but after reading other posts, it seems that several people have pointed out that these cars can get 32-36 mpg on the highway. I can attest to that too!

This car has truly proven itself over the past three years, especially during those three blizzards. With its AWD, driving in snow and ice is far less daunting and you never feel like you'll lose control. The car itself feels incredibly solid, with a satisfying 'ka-thunk' when you close the door. Not only are there no squeaks, but everything works properly too. I recently moved to a hilly neighborhood and I'm at the top. My old car (BMW 528i) couldn't even make it up a small grade in the snow, but the Subaru climbs the hill to my house like a mountain goat. I'm thoroughly impressed!

I really like my Subaru and everything about it, except for the intolerable seats. The car is economical, reliable, and easy to see out of. It has a good size trunk and performs well in the snow and on rough roads. Although it feels somewhat primitive and mechanical, it is well connected and has good build quality. Unfortunately, the uncomfortable seats make longer trips unbearable for my wife and me. We can't wait to get to a rest stop just to stretch our backs and behinds. It's really unfortunate that such a great car is let down by such uncomfortable seats.

There are many reviews out there that suggest this car can compete with the European Sports Sedan class, but in my opinion, it falls short. While it is a quick car that offers a lot of bang for the buck, its suspension is soft and it lacks the high-quality interior of its rivals.

Hi there! I can see that you had some issues with your 2008 Legacy, but I'm glad to hear that it provided you with great AWD traction and low maintenance costs. It's always tough when a car starts to have problems, but I hope you were able to find a solution that worked for you. Thank you for sharing your experience with us!

I really enjoy my Legacy for many reasons. The conservative styling is a plus, and I appreciate being able to see out of the car. However, I have noticed some road and wind noise, and the ride can be a bit harsh at times. After 22000 miles, I replaced the OEM Goodyear tires and the ride greatly improved. The navigation system can lag and sometimes tells me to turn too late. Unfortunately, there are some rattles, squeaks, and pops in the interior that are considered 'normal', which I find disappointing. While the handling is decent, the braking is good, and the acceleration is adequate, I am overall pleased with the fuel economy. I believe that if Subaru had paid more attention to the details, I would feel much better about my purchase. That being said, the dealer support has been fine.

I am someone who takes great care of my vehicles and appreciates them. When I bought this car, I was confident in my purchase because it had a clean report and all the necessary maintenance work had been done. I even had the recalls taken care of right away and had the car inspected, which showed that it was in great condition for a Subaru with 150,000 miles on it. I made sure to keep up with routine maintenance, including changing the water pump and belt, and getting the gaskets done on time. However, about a month after I bought it, I started getting a check engine light for either the catalytic converter or the O2 sensor. Although I was planning on handling it soon, the light would disappear for weeks at a time and the car was running fine, so I didn't think it was urgent. Unfortunately, one day while driving on the freeway, my car suddenly shut off and I lost control. After getting it towed to a specialist, I was told that the engine was toast and it would cost $4500 to put a new one in. This was very disappointing, especially considering how reliable these cars are supposed to be.
