The Subaru Legacy (Japanese: スバル・レガシィ, Hepburn: Subaru Regashi) is a mid-size car built by Japanese automobile manufacturer Subaru since 1989. The maker's flagship car, it is unique in its class for offering all-wheel drive as a standard feature, and Subaru's traditional boxer engine. The Legacy was sold as the Liberty in Australia out of deference to Legacy Australia, an organisation dedicated to caring for the families of military service veterans.

In 1996, a variant of the Legacy with heightened suspension called the Legacy Outback was introduced to compete in the burgeoning sport-utility vehicle class and proved to be a sales success for Subaru. The Outback line was split into its own model in 2008, known as the Subaru Outback.

As of 2008, 3.6 million Legacy models have been built since its 1989 introduction.

Production of the Legacy ended in Japan in June 2020, with the sixth-generation Legacy being the last model produced and marketed in Japan. Subaru of America announced in an internal email that 2025 will be the last model year for the Subaru Legacy. The Subaru Outback will remain in production, after being the company's top selling model in 2023.

Common 2010 Subaru Legacy problems

The 2010 Subaru Legacy has been noted for a few common problems, primarily related to its headlights and transmission system.

Faulty Headlights: The 2010 Subaru Legacy has had issues with its headlights, with the bulbs dying out more frequently than usual. This problem can be quite annoying and inconvenient for drivers, and it has been reported to occur around 140,000 miles.

CVT Transmission System Issues: Another significant problem with the 2010 Subaru Legacy is the issues with the Continuously Variable Transmission (CVT) system. Drivers have reported that the car shudders, vibrates, and eventually stalls when they drive or stop quickly. This issue can be quite serious, and it has been reported to occur after the warranty has expired, meaning that owners have to pay around $2,000 for repairs.

These issues are not unique to the 2010 model, as the 2011 Legacy also suffered from headlight problems and transmission system issues. However, the 2010 Legacy seems to have had a higher incidence of these problems compared to other model years.

It is worth noting that Subaru has a reputation for reliability, and the Legacy is generally considered a reliable car. However, if you are considering purchasing a used 2010 Subaru Legacy, it is essential to be aware of these common problems and to have any potential issues inspected and addressed by a qualified mechanic before making a purchase.

  • Summary: The subframe failed. We were told it should not be used till the part is completely replaced. This was after coming back from a trip from New York to WI. After taking it to an independent dealer we were told the part was on back order on July 5th. After being told the part was finally in on August 14th I was told that the Subaru dealership said they made a mistake and that part was not for the independent dealership I’m working threw but for one of their customers. Seems this subframe is such an issue with the Subaru legacy’s that there’s a several week to several months back order. Just wondering if it’s such an issue and possible safety risk why there’s no recall?

I was lucky I was in the highway and when I got in the first light it was green, other wise an accident would've happened.

  • Manufacturer: Subaru of America, Inc.
  • Components: VISIBILITY:WINDSHIELD WIPER/WASHER:MOTOR
  • Summary: Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain model year 2010-2014 Legacy vehicles manufactured November 26, 2008, to June 7, 2013, and 2010-2014 Outback vehicles manufactured January 9, 2009 to June 7, 2013. • Manufacturer: Subaru of America, Inc.
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Subaru is recalling certain model year 2010-2012 Legacy and Outback vehicles equipped with an automatic or CVT transmission and an Audiovox remote engine starter (RES) accessory, certain model year 2012-2013 Impreza vehicles equipped with a CVT transmission and an Audiovox remote engine starter (RES) accessory, and certain model year 2013 XV Crosstrek vehicles equipped with a CVT transmission and an Audiovox remote engine starter (RES) accessory. Negative 2010 Subaru Legacy car reviews

  1. Lawrence Ratke 2024-11-28

In November 2014, our adult son left for work in his 2010 Subaru Legacy 3.6R Limited Sedan. It was a clear, cool, and dry morning. According to an eyewitness, the car was going at a speed of around 50 mph and sounded like a garbage truck. Unfortunately, the car veered over a neighbor's curb, pivoted, and hit a tree at 45 mph (as per the Police Department). Our son passed away the following week as a direct result of this unintended acceleration incident. We are deeply saddened by this tragedy.

  2. Santa Romaguera 2024-11-24

    1. If you notice excessively loud engine noise, especially when first starting, it could be a sign of an issue. 2. Shifting gears should be a smooth process, but if you experience hard, jolting, clunking, clucking, or clicking sounds, it may be time to have your car checked. A. When shifting from Park to Reverse, you may experience a big jolt accompanied by a loud clunking sound from under the car, and sometimes also a clucking sound from under the rear. B. When shifting to Neutral and Drive, there's not much of a jolt. C. In general, shifting from P to R to N to D and vice versa may not be smooth, and there may always be a clicking sound coming from right under the car (like a cable snapping noise). If you have any suggestions or comments, they are welcome.

Updating my review. Although I had a terrible experience with my Subaru, I would like to share my feedback. As a 63 year old grandmother, I purchased a Subaru which unfortunately had consistent problems. Despite replacing the electrical wires and AC, the car still had issues such as water in the interior and even a brake pad falling out. After 8 years of regular maintenance, the engine eventually failed. While I was disappointed with my experience, I appreciate that Subaru offered a $1,000 discount towards a new car. I would caution others to carefully consider their options before purchasing a Subaru. Thank you for taking the time to read my review.

  4. Spencer Blick 2024-10-10

My apologies for the inconvenience caused by the car shaking over 60 mph. I understand how frustrating it can be to experience such issues. I would like to assure you that we are working diligently to identify the root cause of the problem and find a solution. We appreciate your patience and understanding as we work towards resolving this issue. Please do not hesitate to contact us if you have any further concerns or questions.

  5. Kris Ledner 2024-10-03

I really enjoy driving my Subaru Legacy, it's a great car! Although, I have had some trouble getting it serviced at the dealership here in Little Rock (not where I purchased it). Unfortunately, they don't offer a shuttle service and their hours are limited to 7:30am - 5:30pm Monday to Friday. If I had to choose again, I might opt for a Camry due to the convenience of their service department. Despite this, the Legacy is still a fantastic car to own, even with the two recalls.

Positive 2010 Subaru Legacy car reviews

  1. Adolfo Legros 2025-01-06

This car sounds like a great fit for someone who commutes in snowy conditions and is taller in stature. It gets good gas mileage (28mph at 75mpg on the highway) for an AWD vehicle, which is a must-have for me in Vermont. If you don't require AWD, you may be able to find a better option (such as the Toyota Camry Hybrid). The handling is average, but overall, this car meets my specific needs perfectly.

  2. Domenic Walker 2024-11-06

After test driving the Ford Fusion, Toyota Camry and the Subaru Legacy, and carefully researching all three, I decided to purchase the Subaru Legacy. As a first-time Subaru owner, I was impressed with the vehicle's performance. The Subaru was the only AWD vehicle I tested out of the three, and it was a joy to drive. It held the road very well, even on a rainy day when I first tested it. I have owned my Subaru for over a month now and I can't wait to get behind the wheel again!

  3. Isom Frami 2024-09-04

By far, this car is a milestone of accomplishments. With the usefulness of the AWD, the improved gas mileage, and the excellent handling, there is nothing to complain about.

  4. Major Harber 2024-08-19

You made an excellent choice with the Legacy 2.5i Limited as your AWD commute car! It's great to hear that you're getting such good gas mileage, especially on those recent trips. The upgraded Continental tires really make a difference in the sharp handling, and the leather seats and sound system make for a very comfortable ride. Plus, there's plenty of room for passengers. Enjoy your new car!

  5. Devonte Ziemann 2024-07-29

Congratulations on your new Subaru! It's great to hear that you took the time to compare different sedans and found that Subaru offers more features for the money, including a manual transmission and all-wheel drive. The interior space is also impressive, with a spacious back seat and trunk. The new styling is unique and really grows on you. It's exciting to have a car that stands out on the road, especially the GT Limited. The Turbo is also impressive, providing great power for a 4-cylinder engine. Enjoy your new ride!
