2022 Subaru Legacy problems

The Subaru Legacy (Japanese: スバル・レガシィ, Hepburn: Subaru Regashi) is a mid-size car built by Japanese automobile manufacturer Subaru since 1989. The maker's flagship car, it is unique in its class for offering all-wheel drive as a standard feature, and Subaru's traditional boxer engine. The Legacy was sold as the Liberty in Australia out of deference to Legacy Australia, an organisation dedicated to caring for the families of military service veterans.

In 1996, a variant of the Legacy with heightened suspension called the Legacy Outback was introduced to compete in the burgeoning sport-utility vehicle class and proved to be a sales success for Subaru. The Outback line was split into its own model in 2008, known as the Subaru Outback.

As of 2008, 3.6 million Legacy models have been built since its 1989 introduction.

Production of the Legacy ended in Japan in June 2020, with the sixth-generation Legacy being the last model produced and marketed in Japan. Subaru of America announced in an internal email that 2025 will be the last model year for the Subaru Legacy. The Subaru Outback will remain in production, after being the company's top selling model in 2023.

Common 2022 Subaru Legacy problems

Based on the complaints from owners of the Subaru Legacy 2022, several common problems have been reported:

  • Radio Software Issues: Owners have experienced problems with the radios in the 2022 Legacy, including slow response, freezing, and other software-related issues. Subaru has been releasing software updates to address these radio malfunctions, highlighting the importance of keeping the system up to date for optimal performance.
  • Maintenance Costs: The 2022 Subaru Legacy, being a turbocharged vehicle with a horizontally opposed engine, requires regular and potentially costly maintenance, especially around the 60k mark. This includes changing fluids, spark plugs, and potentially the PCV valve. Owners should be prepared for these maintenance costs to ensure the longevity and performance of their vehicle.
  • Drivetrain Noise: Some owners have reported drivetrain noise issues in the 2022 Legacy, particularly at low speeds. This noise can be disruptive and may indicate underlying problems with the torque converter or transmission. Monitoring and addressing any unusual noises promptly can help prevent further damage and maintain the vehicle's drivability.
  • Infotainment System Errors: The 2022 Legacy has been associated with infotainment system errors, with reports of radio controls and display screen freezing. While this issue is covered by warranty, it can still be a source of frustration for owners. Staying informed about software updates and addressing any system glitches promptly can help ensure a smoother driving experience.

These problems highlight the importance of regular maintenance, prompt attention to any warning signs, and staying informed about software updates to address common issues in the Subaru Legacy 2022 model.

TIRES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-09-13
  • VIN: 4S3BWAN68N3
  • Components: TIRES
  • Summary: The first tire had an air bubble and I brought it in. They said it was a manufacturer error. In September 2023 I had a blowout and Subaru declared that it was a manufacturer defect. I asked him to check all the tires and they kept the original set on. This month a third tire from the original set blew while being driven. Three tires out of four have had manufacturer defects.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-25
  • VIN: 4S3BWAN69N3
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: In April 2024 a small rock hit my windshield and it immediately cracked. I’ve had rocks hit the windshield on other vehicles but usually nothing is visible or worse case it was a chip. The 3-4 inch crack grew to over a foot by the next day. I had it repaired at Safelite and had to pay the $500 deductible. The cost was even greater due to the need to recalibrate the safety cameras. My son just had a similar experience yesterday with his 2021 Subaru Legacy. From researching this, it appears this is a too common occurrence with Subarus.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-18
  • VIN: 4S3BWAC68N3
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: My windshield cracked when I wasn’t even driving, it cracked all the way up almost to the top of the windshield. I have heard of other Subaru owners having this same issue with the windshield cracking easily. This should not have cracked like this. It is cheaply made obviously and unsafe.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-06-13
  • VIN: 4S3BWAN67N3
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: driving home from work my sunroof exploded outward. No impact to the glass, I was not operating it. Glass mostly went out and behind but some fell onto me as I was driving at highway speeds. I have seen others posting on the internet with this issue. Dealership has the car now. No warning.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-06-01
  • VIN: 4S3BWAF68N3
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Unknown. Seat belt warning lights will start beeping very loudly while on the road while seat belts are buckled. This is an extremely noisy distraction and frightens my passengers. Dealer changed one seat belt but problem remains

VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-04-17
  • Crash: 1
  • VIN: 4S3BWAM64N3
  • Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL
  • Summary: The contact owned a 2022 Subaru Legacy. The contact stated that while driving into their driveway at unknown speeds, the vehicle independently accelerated forward. The contact placed the vehicle in reverse, however, the vehicle continued to accelerate independently, and the contact's rear bumper crashed into the neighbor's garage. No injuries were sustained. The neighbor's garage was damaged. The vehicle was towed to the tow company's lot. The vehicle was diagnosed as totaled. The manufacturer was not made aware of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 15,000.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-20
  • VIN: 4S3BWGP62N3
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: In 2022, a piece of small gravel fell off the back of a dump truck, bounced off the road, and struck the windshield of my 2022 Subaru Legacy. Based on past experience with other vehicles, this should have resulted in a round or star-shaped crack to the glass but this caused cracks that continue to grow and branch off. In 2024, I replaced the windshield at Flow Subaru in Charlottesville, VA at a cost of over $1000 and within 3-4 weeks there was a linear crack halfway across the windshield directly in front of the driver's seat, which somewhat interferes with the driver's view. Online research suggests this is a known problem with Subaru cars with their "Eyesight" system. Supposedly, Subaru has settled class-action lawsuits related to their windshields cracking. This is a safety hazard from the standpoint of driver's vision and windshield integrity. These windshields are fragile and inherently defective.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2024-03-14
  • VIN: 4S3BWAF68N3
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: Vehicles windshield appears to be defective. Small rock hit windshield I. 2/18, got replaced immediately after for around 1000 dollars. Not even three weeks later on 3/14 a semi kick up a rock and my windshield has a crack that can not be patched up, it has to be repaired. I went immediately to Safelite after second rock hit and it had spread so much that it had to be replaced.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-12-23
  • VIN: 4S3BWAD69N3
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: The windshield immediately chips and cracks upon any rock/pebble impact. My safety is affected because the cracks spread into my line of sight. This has happened 3 times on my car on three different windshields in 2 years, unknown if it’s been inspected by manufacturers.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-11-30
  • VIN: 4S3BWGN64N3
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: The contact leased a 2022 Subaru Legacy. The contact stated that condensation was leaking onto her foot. While driving, water entered the vehicle and caused the rugs, radio, and amplifier to become wet. The vehicle was taken to the local dealer, where it was diagnosed that water had entered the vehicle, and the radio rugs and amplifier were replaced. The manufacturer was not contacted. The approximate failure mileage was 8,000.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-08-20
  • VIN: 4S3BWAC60N3
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: I was sitting at a Walmart parking lot around 6:50 am waiting for the store to open. I decided to sit in the back seat of my new 2022 Legacy and work on my laptop while sipping on my coffee. It is a beautiful 71 degrees in small-town Georgia when I hear what I could describe as an ice cube going into a warm glass of water, followed by a "dragging" sound as if a tree branch was scratching my car; only I was near nothing, not even cars as the store hadn't yet opened. But I chose to park way from careless people who may ding my new car. It wasn't until I finished and came around to the driver's seat that I noticed what'd made the sounds. The windshield was cracked. No impact. The dealership tried to make it look like I was lying and Subaru advocacy refunded the $500 deductible "As a courtesy" (because I had to use my insurance). My car was around 4-5 months old.

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-04-18
  • VIN: 4S3BWGP61N3
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE,LANE DEPARTURE
  • Summary: After a small pebble hit my windshield, an extremely large crack appeared and grew within moments of the impact. It has spiderwebbed all over the windshield and obstructed the vehicle's EYESIGHT cameras. A second impact within a few days has done the same right in front of the driver's seat. The spiderwebbing of the cracks was near immediate and grew faster than 3 inches per minute.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2023-01-04
  • VIN: 4S3BWAD68N3
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: My Legacy had been parked for 2 days in above freezing conditions 40-60 degrees. when i had parked the vehicle there was no cracks on my front windshield, however, when i got into the vehicle today i noticed a large crack starting from my a pillar about 1/2 way up to about 1-2 feet long extending towards the middle of my windshield. The crack has no chips or impact marks, based upon other complaints this is a common issue, i have contacted subaru and have an appointment to take the vehicle into the dealer for an inspection and we will see their response hopefully soon.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-12-23
  • VIN: 4S3BWAD64N3
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: A crack in the windshield appeared that was spontaneous - there was no impact to cause this crack. It started in the lower half of the passenger side and quickly proceeded across the windshield in an S figure. It is exactly like other spontaneous Subaru windshield cracks that I have seen online. My car has only 8700 miles on it but it is not covered by warranty.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-12-20
  • VIN: 4S3BWAN67N3
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: Large crack in windshield on the driver's side while car was parked at work, further investigation found a tiny chip point of impact, Subaru is known to use specific, thinner glass due to eye sight technology. If a small chip can crack half the windshield what will a significant impact cause? I live in a rural area and have had some significant damage done on other vehicles by animals and such, not only do I not want to have to replace a windshield every few months or so- I don't want the next bird that flies into my windshield to come through it.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-08-11
  • VIN: 4S3BWGN61N3
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: The DCM/Telematics unit has now failed twice in this vehicle, despite already being completely replaced a first time. All remote app controls fail. Starlink call connection buttons are unresponsive despite the car being in a clear, unobstructed coverage area. The only indications of failure are attempts to send remote commands via the app and the lack of a green LED next to the Starlink buttons. This presents a safety issue because the system is not presenting an obvious sign of failure and critical items like "Automatic Collision Notification" and remote immobilization will fail by assumption due to the connection/electrical problems.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-08-22
  • VIN: 4S3BWGN68N3
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: The front window delamined on the edge and per the Subaru glass expert it started on the edge, and now covers the window. Subaru is denying the claim.

LANE DEPARTURE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-06-01
  • VIN: 4S3BWAN65N3
  • Components: LANE DEPARTURE
  • Summary: The lane assistance feature almost made me hit a semi truck that had drifted over its lane. I moved to the left to allow for space, the lane assist function tried to turn me back into the semi truck I was driving over the lane to avoid. It failed to recognize a major hazard and in fact created a more dangerous situation for me. I had to jerk the wheel back to the left, fortunately it shut off and I was able to maintain control.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-04-27
  • VIN: 4S3BWGN6XN3
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: On average about twice per month, the touch screen will lock up. This causes the entire system to crash turning off cruise control, emergency braking, lane departure, lane keep assist, and almost every other "smart" function of the vehicle. There is no specific action that causes this, it is purely random. The "lock-up" can last anywhere from 30 seconds to several minutes. The dash notifications telling you that all of the assistance features have turned off don't come on until the system has rebooted, even though they stopped functioning at the same time the "lock-up" started. On a typical day, there is a significant delay in controlling these features via the touch screen. Minor issues where the assistance features are delayed by several seconds have happened often, but this does not result in a complete system reboot. The best way I can describe it is as if the vehicle is controlled by a computer running Windows Vista with so many viruses it can barely function. Even just adjusting the electric seats or stereo volume can have up to a 30-second delay from user input to the system response. I have noticed that during these delays, the assistance features (like lane keep and collision warning) are also delayed.

VISIBILITY PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-01-23
  • VIN: 4S3BWAN67N3
  • Components: VISIBILITY
  • Summary: The contact owns a 2022 Subaru Legacy. The contact stated while at a standstill the windshield cracked without warning. The vehicle was taken to a local dealer where it was diagnosed with needing the windshield replaced. The vehicle was not repaired. The manufacturer was not informed of the failure. The failure mileage was approximately 2,000.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-01-15
  • VIN: 4S3BWAH67N3
  • Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: The windshield on my 2022 Subaru Legacy cracked. The crack looks like it started at the bottom center of the windshield and is working its way up several inches and now spreading to the passenger side. I took it to the dealer this morning. They used a marker to trace the crack and found a very small impact point. They said it doesn't take much as the windshields are thinner in Subaru's due to the camera system. I feel like this is a safety issue. And it seems to be common issue with Subaru.
2021-12-22

UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-12-22
  • VIN: 4s3bwad6xn3
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER
  • Summary: My car's windshield was hit by a small stone while driving on highway speed. At first it seemed to be a small chip/ crack. After a minute or two the crack got bigger. This is the second time I'm facing this issue. Same kind of incident happened a month ago as well. I thought subaru had best safety ratings. But if this happens to someone while driving in the middle of nowhere and the glass shatters all of a sudden for just a mere tiny stone chips, I don't feel safe driving this car at all. I have attached my previous insurance claim info and pictures of incident as well. I have noticed many cars with a chip or small crack on windshield. But they don't pose any serious concern to drive the vehicle. In my case it's a serious concern for safety as the small chip spreads across the windshield which is a threat to drivability of the vehicle. I urge NHTSA to investigate this as soon as possible.

Negative 2022 Subaru Legacy car reviews

  1. Ezra Gerlach 2024-08-25

When I was looking for a new car before the pandemic, five of my friends who own Subarus recommended that I buy one. However, I have found that my experience with the car has not been as positive as I had hoped. The infotainment system is inconvenient and can be distracting when trying to adjust the air conditioning settings. It can be difficult to decide whether to look at the screen or the road. I am concerned that this will be even more of an issue during the winter months. Additionally, I have found that the mileage is only average at best, and plugging in the USB cord can be awkward. The car can also be quite jerky when first driving it. While the trunk is spacious, I have found that it is best to use the back seat if I want to avoid items flying around. When I was cleaning the car, I noticed that the workmanship under the front seats was subpar, with the flaps not put down and the carpet appearing to be cut. I also do not like that the AC vents are vertical in the middle. Finally, I had to turn off the warnings for driving over yellow lines in construction zones, as they would constantly go off. Overall, I would not recommend a Subaru and am waiting until 2021 to start looking for a new car.

  2. Johnnie Lehner 2024-08-04

The Starlink system has been causing some issues with my car, and unfortunately, it has been in the shop for 8 days and counting. Despite the efforts of the mechanics, they have not been able to fix the problem yet. The infotainment system has a new format that requires too many touch screens to get to anything, which can be unsafe while driving. Additionally, the Android Auto feature has been problematic, often disconnecting while driving. Although the safety features can be distracting at times, the interior of the car is quite nice. While there are some areas for improvement, the driving and acceleration are average. Overall, I am confident that Subaru will continue to improve the design and quality of their cars.

  3. Elbert Mertz 2024-08-02

I purchased a new 2020 Legacy Premium in March 2020. Although I have had some issues with the car, I am confident that the dealership and Subaru will work together to resolve them. The car has been in the service center six times for touchscreen failures, but the dealership has been diligent in trying to fix the issue. After Technical Support investigated, they discovered that there is an issue with the pre-downloaded Pandora App and Apple CarPlay, which is causing the failures. Although there is no immediate fix, I am confident that Subaru will release an update soon. In the meantime, the dealership has provided me with a loaner Outback, which has its own issues, but I appreciate their effort to make things right. I still believe that Subaru makes great cars and I would recommend the Ascent to anyone in the market for a new vehicle.

  4. Emery Wintheiser 2024-07-12

My 2020 Legacy just turned 1 year old and I'm ready to trade it in. Unfortunately, I haven't had the best experience with this car. It's supposed to have facial recognition to know who I am, but it seems to think I'm one of 5 different drivers. Additionally, it's a bit too sensitive when it comes to safety warnings, even if I just scratch the back of my neck. It can be a bit frustrating when the engine shuts off at every red light and then jerks on. However, I did find that Subaru has good trade-in value, so I was able to sell it and get most of my money back! While I may not choose to own a Subaru again, I appreciate the value they offer.

  5. Jerod Dietrich 2024-06-22

My car has already reached 88000 miles, which means I drive a lot, mostly on the highway. I have been driving cars in the US for about 34 years now, and I have never had this many issues with a new vehicle. Unfortunately, I have had to replace the windshield three times already, and the last one was the fourth. Each time, it was due to a small pebble, and it cracks the next day morning. It just cracks as the temperature changes. By the way, I am living in San Jose, CA, which is not cold at all! Additionally, the thermal control valve failed at around 70000 miles, and I had to replace it. The transmission is also starting to go out at 75000, and I have to replace it now, which is making me quite frustrated. Lastly, the touch screen does not work once in a while until the ignition has to be turned off first and the car restarted.

Positive 2022 Subaru Legacy car reviews

  1. Tristian Cole 2024-09-21

I chose this car because of its impressive safety features, which are comparable to those of the more expensive Volvo S60 with similar luxury features. I also appreciate that it comes standard with adaptive cruise control and all-wheel drive. Despite being much more affordable than many luxury cars, it still manages to match the reliability of Subaru and its excellent safety systems. Another great feature is the large gas tank, which holds 18.5 gallons and coupled with the excellent gas mileage, allows me to drive from MD to FL with only one stop for gas. This is definitely a feature that Subaru should be proud of!

  2. Brady Bruen 2024-09-06

There is so much to love about this vehicle!

  3. Mauricio Conn 2024-09-03

Trouble-free and great gas mileage - what more could you ask for?

  4. Waylon Reichert 2024-08-10

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I noticed that you traded in your 2018 Outback for a new one, that's great! It's always exciting to have new features to explore. I completely understand that some changes can be frustrating, like the GPS starting in the default view and not being able to mute it. It's a shame that these features were removed from the previous model. Is there anything else you're enjoying about your new car?

  5. Jaeden Denesik 2024-07-29

I haven't enjoyed driving a car for a while, but I absolutely love driving this car!
