1992 Subaru Legacy problems
The Subaru Legacy (Japanese: スバル・レガシィ, Hepburn: Subaru Regashi) is a mid-size car built by Japanese automobile manufacturer Subaru since 1989. The maker's flagship car, it is unique in its class for offering all-wheel drive as a standard feature, and Subaru's traditional boxer engine. The Legacy was sold as the Liberty in Australia out of deference to Legacy Australia, an organisation dedicated to caring for the families of military service veterans.
In 1996, a variant of the Legacy with heightened suspension called the Legacy Outback was introduced to compete in the burgeoning sport-utility vehicle class and proved to be a sales success for Subaru. The Outback line was split into its own model in 2008, known as the Subaru Outback.
As of 2008, 3.6 million Legacy models have been built since its 1989 introduction.
Production of the Legacy ended in Japan in June 2020, with the sixth-generation Legacy being the last model produced and marketed in Japan. Subaru of America announced in an internal email that 2025 will be the last model year for the Subaru Legacy. The Subaru Outback will remain in production, after being the company's top selling model in 2023.

Common 1992 Subaru Legacy problems
Based on the complaints from owners of the 1992 Subaru Legacy, several common problems have been reported:
- Transmission Torque Converter Vibrations: Another common problem reported by owners of the 1992 Subaru Legacy is excessive vibration when accelerating, often attributed to a weak transmission torque converter. This issue can cause discomfort while driving and may require the replacement of the torque converter with a revised version to address the vibration problem.
- Oil Leaks: Owners have reported increased engine oil consumption and overheating in the 1992 Subaru Legacy, often due to oil leaks at the camshaft seal or crankshaft front seal. Addressing these leaks promptly is crucial to prevent engine damage and maintain the vehicle's performance. Replacing the seals and timing belt, if necessary, can resolve this issue.
- Rapid Battery Drain: Some owners have experienced rapid battery drain in the 1992 Subaru Legacy, which can be attributed to a faulty anti-lock brake system (ABS). This issue can lead to unexpected battery depletion and may require the replacement of the ABS relay to resolve the problem and prevent further battery issues.
- Incorrect Fuel Gauge Reading: Another reported problem is an incorrect fuel gauge reading, which can be caused by a software issue in the vehicle. This issue can lead to inaccurate fuel level readings, affecting the driver's ability to monitor fuel consumption accurately. Visiting a Subaru dealer for a software update can rectify this problem.
- Suspension Issues: Owners have reported feeling every bump in the road, indicating potential problems with the suspension system of the 1992 Subaru Legacy. Worn lower front suspension arm rear bushes are often the culprit, and replacing these components can improve ride comfort and handling. Replacing the worn bushes is a more affordable solution compared to replacing the entire suspension system.
- Dual-Mass Flywheel Wear: A common issue in the 1992 Subaru Legacy is a loud squeaking noise or a deep rattle when accelerating, which can be caused by a worn-out dual-mass flywheel. Replacing the worn flywheel can resolve these noise issues and improve the vehicle's performance. Ordering a new flywheel and following installation guides can address this problem.
These common problems reported by owners of the 1992 Subaru Legacy highlight the importance of regular maintenance and prompt attention to any issues to ensure the vehicle's longevity and performance.

I WENT TO FILL THE GAS TANK AND WHEN I GOT HOME YOU COULD SMELL GAS FUMES VERY STRONGLY AND LATER WE COULD SEE WHERE IT HAD LEAKED ONTO THE GROUND. I ASKED MY OLDEST SON ABOUT IT SINCE HE IS A CERTIFIED MECHANIC AND HE WAS TELLING ME ABOUT A RECALL ON THAT YEAR BECAUSE OF HOW THE COMPANY PUT IN THE BACK SEAT. I CONTACTED MY LOCAL SUBARU DEALER (KELLY CADILLAC) AND THEY SAID IT WAS NOT THAT YEAR OR VIN NUMBER AND THAT THEY COULD NOT HELP ME. THEY ACTED LIKE IF IT WAS NOT A NEW VEHICLE THEN IT DID NOT MATTER. THIS IS MY SON'S ONLY WAY TO COLLEGE EVERY DAY BUT IT WORRIES ME WHETHER THIS CAR IS SAFE OR NOT. *TR

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2002-10-22
- VIN: JF1CX3533NH
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: I NEED YOUR HELP TO FIX A PROBLEM GONE ON FAR TOO LONG. MY SUBARU SVX TRANSMISSION SUFFERS WITH A DELAY WHEN SHIFTING GEARS, HIGH REVS AND SLIPPING WHILE SHIFTING AND A CLUNKING WHEN PUTTING THE CAR IN REVERSE. THE HEAT TRANSMISSION INSTALLED IN THE SUBARU SVX AND LEGACY MODELS SUFFER FROM A SEVERE COOLING PROBLEM. THE RADIATOR BASED TRANSMISSION COOLER CAN NOT COOL THE TRANSMISSION FLUID COOL ENOUGH. THE TRANSMISSIONS POOR DESIGN DOES NOT ALLOW THE LUBRICANT TO FLOW THROUGH IT TO KEEP PARTS LUBRICATED(THUS MORE FRICTION AND HEAT DAMAGE). UNUSUAL HIGH OVERDRIVE PLACES ADDITIONAL SIDE LOADS ON BEARINGS GENERATING HEAT. THE ALL-WHEEL-DRIVE SYSTEM PUTS EVEN MORE STRAIN ON THE TRANSMISSION CAUSING EVEN MORE HEAT. THIS PROBLEM IS OF EPIDEMIC PROPORTION SO COMMON AMONG OVER 90% OF THESE CARS MANUFACTURED. SUBARU IS AWARE OF THE MANUFACTURING AND ENGINEERING DEFECTS IN THE TRANSMISSIONS FOR ALL SVX MODELS. ALMOST ALL SVX OWNERS, EVERY WEBSITE, AND EVEN YOUR OWN COMPLAINT FILES ARE AWARE OF THIS MAJOR DEFECT AND SPECIFIC PROBLEMS WITH THE TRANSMISSIONS. SUBARU HAS DONE NOTHING IF ANYTHING TO CORRECT THIS PROBLEM. THIS PROBLEM IS WIDESPREAD AND THE MANUFACTURER KNOWS ABOUT IT. AT THE VERY LEAST I NEED SUBARU TO REPLACE MY DEFECTIVE TRANSMISSION WITH A NEW ONE UPGRADED WITH HIGH CLUTCH DRUM AND THRUST BEARINGS, NEW REVERSE CLUTCH STEEL PLATES, MODIFIED TRANSMISSION CASE, OIL PUMP GASKET AND TRANSFER CLUTCH DRIVEN PLATE, A TRANSMISSION OIL FILTER KIT AND AN AFTER TRANSMISSION OIL COOLER AND WARRANTY IT. THIS CAR IS TOO EXPENSIVE TO FIX THE DAMAGE FROM THEIR DEFECTIVE DESIGN AND UNUSUALLY HIGH COST COMPARED TO OTHER TRANSMISSIONS. DT

1992 Subaru Legacy recalls
The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has issued 2 recalls for different components of the 1992 Subaru Legacy.
- Manufacturer: SUBARU OF AMERICA, INC.
- Components: POWER TRAIN:MANUAL TRANSMISSION
- Summary: WHEN THE VEHICLE IS DRIVEN CONTINUOUSLY UNDER EXTREMELY COLD TEMPERATURES (-22 DEGREES F.) AND HIGH HUMIDITY WEATHER CONDITIONS, THE TRANSMISSION BREATHING (AIR) VENT CAN BE BLOCKED DUE TO MOISTURE FREEZING AT THE OIL LEVEL GAUGE. IF THIS OCCURS, PRESSURE INSIDE THE TRANSMISSION CASE WILL INCREASE AND PUSH OUT THE REAR OIL SEAL, CAUSING TRANSMISSION OIL LEAKAGE. THE LACK OF LUBRICATION CAN BURN THE INTERNAL COMPONENTS OF THE TRANSMISSION, CAUSE THE TRANSMISSION TO SEIZE AND THE VEHICLE TO COME TO A SUDDEN STOP.
- Consequence: SUDDEN STOPS WITHOUT PRIOR WARNING CAN CAUSE VEHICLE OCCUPANTS TO BE THROWN AROUND THE VEHICLE AND CAUSE LOSS OF VEHICLE CONTROL WHICH CAN RESULT IN AN ACCIDENT.
- Remedy: DEALERS WILL MODIFY THE OIL GAUGE PIPE AND MODIFY THE OIL LEVEL GAUGE (DIPSTICK) OR REPLACE IT, DEPENDING ON THE TYPE OF DIPSTICK IN THE VEHICLE.
- Manufacturer: SUBARU OF AMERICA, INC.
- Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE:STORAGE:TANK ASSEMBLY
- Summary: A MISALIGNMENT OF THE REAR SEAT CUSHION LATCHING BRACKET REINFORCEMENT PLATE TO THE FLOOR REQUIRED A MACHINE TAP TO CLEAR THE OPENING FOR A MOUNTING BOLT. THE TOP OF THE FUEL TANK MAY HAVE BEEN PUNCTURED WHEN THE TAP WAS USED.
- Consequence: THE PUNCTURE IN THE TOP OF THE FUEL TANK COULD CAUSE FUELTO LEAK, WHICH COULD RESULT IN A VEHICLE FIRE WHEN LEAKS OCCUR NEAR A SOURCE OFIGNITION.
- Remedy: INSPECT THE FUEL TANKS; REPLACE THEM IF THEY ARE PUNCTURED.

This car is amazing! It has never let me down and handles fabulously in all weather conditions. Even with 220,000 miles on it, it still only uses about 1 quart of oil per year. I did have to replace the struts after 180,000 miles and the CV joints after 200,000, as well as all four brake drums, but it's still as peppy as ever! The fan did go out in the interior after 175,000 miles, but all doors and windows still work perfectly and close well. The cloth interior still looks as good as new with very little wear. It gets an impressive gas mileage of 26 and still holding. The only minor issue was the automatic seat belt on the passenger side going out after 175,000 miles, but it was an easy fix. Overall, this car is absolutely fabulous and has spoiled me! It's also very easy to work on and everything is easily accessible.

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I just wanted to share my experience with this car. I'm actually the second owner, and I have to say, it's been great so far! I haven't had any mechanical problems, and it responds really well when I take off. The previous owner was really diligent about maintenance and kept all the paperwork, so I know it's been well taken care of. They even had the engine parts checked and replaced as needed, like hoses and clamps. Overall, I'm really happy with the performance and reliability of this car.

This car is a lot of fun and very fast! The Turbo model features a closed-deck block design, which is perfect for high-boost applications. The crank and rods are forged, while the pistons are cast. Additionally, the Sport Sedan version is known for not having rust problems. I live up north and my Sport Sedan has no rust whatsoever. One of the reasons for this is that the Sport Sedan version has galvanized steel panels. Not only is it AWD with ABS, but it also has a 3.90 Limited Slip Differential in the rear. It's a truly unique car!

Pushing 200k miles and still going strong! It has never let me down and is worth way more than its appraised value.

I had been wanting a Subaru for quite a while when I found this one. I got it for $500!! The amazing thing about this car is that the guy who had it before me hadn't changed the oil in 4 years, and it was still his daily driver. When I found it there were no fluids in it at all. This guy told me that he was determined to drive it til the wheels fell off and didn't think that it was worth the money to change the oil. It was a little shaky at first, but now it runs very strong. It doesn't look like much, but I shocked the hell out of a v8 mustang recently.

I bought this car with over 250,000+ miles on it, and despite some idle issues that I have just now been able to handle, this car just won't quit. It's too ugly to sell, so I use it as a backup car. Despite only running on two cylinders for the last six months, it still starts and drives!
Ansley West 2024-08-05
This car is really fun to drive and very reliable. However, it is important to note that after about 7 or 8 years, the car may develop a major rust problem that unfortunately cannot be reversed.
Ryleigh Robel 2024-01-01
You recently received a '92 Legacy AWD that had been sitting in a driveway for the past 6 years. You were told that it leaks oil but not on the ground. Upon checking the oil level, you found it to be overfull. It seems someone had been misinformed about checking the oil level with the engine running, but it was an easy enough fix. You were also told that the driver's door window wouldn't roll up, but after installing a new battery and pressing the button, it worked fine. Maybe the button wasn't pressed hard enough. What really impressed you, though, was that after sitting for so long with questionable gas and too much oil, it only took a couple of turns of the key before it fired right up. No throttle, no starting fluid, just foot on the clutch while turning the key. It has a bit of a tap while running, but after reading reviews, you think it may just be the old gas.
