2015 Subaru Legacy problems
The Subaru Legacy (Japanese: スバル・レガシィ, Hepburn: Subaru Regashi) is a mid-size car built by Japanese automobile manufacturer Subaru since 1989. The maker's flagship car, it is unique in its class for offering all-wheel drive as a standard feature, and Subaru's traditional boxer engine. The Legacy was sold as the Liberty in Australia out of deference to Legacy Australia, an organisation dedicated to caring for the families of military service veterans.
In 1996, a variant of the Legacy with heightened suspension called the Legacy Outback was introduced to compete in the burgeoning sport-utility vehicle class and proved to be a sales success for Subaru. The Outback line was split into its own model in 2008, known as the Subaru Outback.
As of 2008, 3.6 million Legacy models have been built since its 1989 introduction.
Production of the Legacy ended in Japan in June 2020, with the sixth-generation Legacy being the last model produced and marketed in Japan. Subaru of America announced in an internal email that 2025 will be the last model year for the Subaru Legacy. The Subaru Outback will remain in production, after being the company's top selling model in 2023.

Common 2015 Subaru Legacy problems
The 2015 Subaru Legacy has been noted for several common problems by owners, which can be categorized into the following areas:
- Engine Burning Smell: Another concern with the 2015 Subaru Legacy is the engine burning smell that some owners have experienced around 650 miles. This issue has been attributed to burning oil, which can be a sign of engine problems.
- Rough Ride: Some drivers of the 2015 Subaru Legacy have reported a very rough ride, characterized by bumpy and bouncy conditions that cause their heads to bounce off the headrests. This problem has been given a severity rating of nine, indicating that it is a significant issue.
- Steering and Suspension: Owners have reported issues with the steering and suspension system of the 2015 Subaru Legacy, including worn-out front ball joints and squeaking noises at low speeds. These problems are often attributed to road conditions but may still seem premature compared to other manufacturers.
- In-Car Electronics: Complaints about in-car electronics have been reported by some owners of the 2015 Subaru Legacy. These issues can include problems with the infotainment system, climate control, and other electronic features.
- Transmission: Transmission problems have been reported by some owners of the 2015 Subaru Legacy, including issues with the continuously variable transmission (CVT) system. These problems can manifest as shuddering, vibrations, and stalling, particularly when driving or stopping quickly.
- Exterior Lighting: Some owners of the 2015 Subaru Legacy have reported issues with the exterior lighting, including problems with the brake lights and headlights. These issues can affect the functionality of the car's safety features, such as the automatic pre-collision braking system.
It is important to note that while these issues have been reported by some owners of the 2015 Subaru Legacy, not all vehicles of this make and model will experience these problems. However, potential buyers should be aware of these common issues and consider them when making a purchasing decision. Regular maintenance and timely repairs can help mitigate some of these problems and ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SEATS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-04-18
- VIN: 4S3BNAL64F3
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,SEATS
- Summary: I have had several battery issues that I just believed to be bad luck and would get a new battery under warranty but it has gotten worse lately. It led me to look online and I notice I am not nearly the only one as this complaint has been brought up my numerous people. It is in regards to my 2015 Subaru legacy and how I’m not certain if my car will start if I make a few short trips where I’m “in and out” of the car more than 3 times in a short period of time. There is definitely a parasitic draw issue from the vehicle and it is a safety concern in not knowing if your vehicle is going to start or if you’ll need a jump or worse be stranded. With the amount of complaints on this issue I would have thought there would be a recall. I know there are safety bulletins but nothing that the dealer or Subaru themselves will address. I have also signed up for the battery settlement case but have not heard back in regards to this. I am really wanting to know if there is a solution because I’ve read a lot of reviews where this is happening in newer models also. It needs to be addressed and a resolution should be offered because it is happening to A LOT of Subarus. My other concern was the seats and moonroof. The leather driver seat has torn up and I have put covers over it to look similar but I use a sun screen for the vehicle often and it still tore up the seat. Lastly the moonroof has a defect that the dealer wouldn’t address. There is something wrong with the seal and loud wind gets in somewhere and makes the vehicle shake as though you turned up a base speakers to the loudest setting. The battery issue has been going on for years as well as the moonroof that has a spot that is allowing in air and causes the vehicle to shake. Please help hold subaru accountable for these issues and get back to me with some sort of solution! Thank you for your time.
VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-04-02
- VIN: 4S3BNEN62F3
- Components: VEHICLE SPEED CONTROL,SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: As I pulled up behind a car that was stopped at a stop sign, I took my foot off the gas pedal, and put it on the brake pedal. The moment i put my foot on the brake pedal, my car surged forward. I had a moment to think, and I confirmed that my foot was on the brake pedal, I had felt the brakes trying to resist the surge. I put the car into neutral, and it jerked to a stop. No one was hurt, I stopped the car in time, but I wondered if this had happened in other settings, what danger it would have posed. This has previously occurred rarely and intermittently when, starting out on some cold mornings, i shifted from reverse to neutral to drive, when backing out of my driveway in the morning. The car surged forward and I had to be quick on pressing the brake pedal hard to get it to stop before hitting a mailbox post. No warning lights went on, in any of these incidents. I called a Subaru dealer, who said there had been no recall history re this uninitiated surge behavior.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-05-16
- VIN: 4S3BNBF63F3
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: Short Block needs to be replaced ($6,500) Yes, Scenic Subaru has the vehicle awaiting status of repairs (who is paying for service) Yes, my safety is at risk as the oil light has come on during the night when I'm alone on a deserted road. Service Department knows what the problem is - they are seeing alot fot this problem. Unknown on Inspections Yes, warning 'low oil' light came on. The oil light kept coming on. All service and maintenance done by Subaru. Now, Subaru Service Department informed that the Short Block needs to be replaced. From my research, it seems that this is a common problem with newer Subaru engines because they use a liquid engine sealant at the factory and when oil sits on the seals when the engine is not running, the sealant degrades and begins to leak. They also said there was nothing we could have done to prevent this and reiterated just how common with Subaru's. Replacing the Short Block on a car with low mileage (<75,000 miles) should be paid for by Subaru as this is a known manufacturing issue. I should not have to pay for this repair. Also, Subaru said trade in value has dropped due to this issue. Please email or call me as soon as possible. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-11-08
- VIN: 4S3BNAC66F3
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: We have owned two 2015 Subaru Legacy sedans. Both of them have had major battery problems. We've had to have battery tenders (trickle-chargers) installed on both cars, and we're still having battery problems. We've been stuck in various parking lots, unable to start the car, and had to get jumps from others. This is a royal pain, and a potential safety hazard if we are stuck in a remote location. We've been told by our mechanic that this vehicle does not really "turn off" when you shut it down. There are several devices in the car which continue to have a "parasitic draw" on the battery, which it is not capable of sustaining. We've had the battery and charging system checked out multiple times, and everything checks out fine. Replacing the battery will NOT solve the problem. Replacing the battery with a deep-cycle battery will NOT solve the problem. It is an inherent defect in the electrical system of the vehicle. Available for inspection: YES Safety issue: being stranded with a dead battery in a dangerous location Confirmed by an independent service center: YES Inspected by anyone else: NO Warning lamps or messages: NO
VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-07-11

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-09-03
- VIN: 4S3BNAD65F3
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Driving 55 on a major highway, my car displayed a warning sign “electronic parking brake” and the “brake” light started to blink. It came out of nowhere so I pulled over and tried to figure out what the issue was. Nothing seemed wrong so I drove home. Later that night, the parking brake was fully engaged and did so by itself. I did not engage and it would not disengage. Apparently, this happens to many other Subaru drivers on the internet. This is a major issue
VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-07-06
- VIN: 4S3BNBN65F3
- Components: VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: I used my windshield washer fluid to wash my windshield and a crack appeared from the bottom driver side of my windshield. I took the car to a Subaru dealership to have the windshield replaced under the Subaru extended windshield warranty program since there was no impact. My claim was denied because the crack was too far towards the driver side of the car.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2015-01-01
- VIN: 4S3BNAN68F3
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Extremely high, abnormal parasitic draining of my battery, in my 2015 Legacy whenever vehicle is not running. This parasitic drain on battery will leave you stranded, if parked for a few days, causing a safety issue, as you can imagine. I always connect and use a battery tender/maintainer with hood up, after every time I use car, when I return car to garage. If I did not have a garage, I would have to connect to this battery charger/maintainer and close the hood to deter exposure to the elements, such as snow, ice, and rain. It is not actual fault of battery, as new perfect battery will drain within a few days with this extremely high parasitic drain. I thought possibly if I blocked the battery remotes from contacting the car, I could reduce this drain. I placed the two remotes into a metal container and then I placed this into a second metal container. This did not resolve the parasitic battery draining issue.
ENGINE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-09-01
- VIN: 4s3bnaa67f3
- Components: ENGINE
- Summary: The contact owns a 2015 Subaru Legacy. The contact stated that the vehicle was consuming an excessive amount of engine oil every 3,000 miles. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure. The approximate failure mileage was 155,000.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-02-12
- VIN: 4S3BNAN64F3
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
- Summary: I am the original owner of the vehicle in question. I have been experiencing excessive electrical drain issues throughout the life of my vehicle. I have had to jump it at least 10 times and have replaced the battery 4 times throughout my 7 years of ownership. This is quite excessive and has caused safety issues in the past as you never know when the battery suddenly no longer has enough power to start the vehicle. My fiancé was recently on a ferry and upon landing the vehicle would not start and this caused quite an issue with the ferry operator and resulted in undue stress and anxiety on her. I have also always had an issue with the Adaptive Cruise Control system (EyeSight) in which under what I believe are specific circumstances, the system fails to detect the roadway and road markers in front of the vehicle and abruptly shuts off. This hasn't been a major issue as I am still actively driving the vehicle, but when you are driving 50mph on a highway and suddenly you are decelerating without brake lights indicating so to others around you can cause a sense of alarm. The somewhat specific situations this occurs in is when there is very little to no ambient light on the road. Although my headlights are on, they don't seem to provide enough light for the system to 'see' at all times.
ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2021-12-29
- VIN: 4S3BNAN66F3
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Electrical system drains battery very frequently. I have had alternator checked and is fine. This vehicle drains batteries leaving the car unable to start. The batteries will be dead by the 2 year warranty. I see there is a lawsuit in NJ showing the CAN electrical system does not go to sleep when the car is off.

This car is perfect for snowy and icy areas, which is why I got an AWD car. Although the fuel economy is affected by the all-wheel drive, it still beats any SUV or truck in gas mileage. I have been getting between 25-35 average mpg, depending on the outside temperature. The car handles great on roads that my old FWD sedan would never have made it through. I have driven it in 3-6When you buy a car, make sure that all of the recalls for the 2015 redesign have been addressed. After these issues, this car has been an amazing piece of machinery. The engine and transmission have not caused any issues and shifting has been satisfactory. Although it's not a race car and acceleration is relatively slow, it is a reliable vehicle that will get you places, especially when the weather gets ugly. Complaints about CVT have been far overblown in my opinion, with shifting being more than satisfactory as my daily driver. The onboard computer comes with a large touch screen which makes entertainment selection easy. The 12 speaker surround sound makes me pretty happy, especially considering how picky I am about my lossless music to begin with. Long trips are pretty easy to deal with in this car. There's lots of room inside, the seats are comfortable, and they can be heated in the front and in the back with independent controls for passengers and back seat occupants. Dual control climate isn't something I was particularly interested in, but it's there and seems to work fine. Voice activated controls are a little picky and can do the wrong thing occasionally, especially if the fan is running, but I like to change things manually anyway as voice control in general takes too long in any vehicle. It's a nice little gimmick to impress your friends with, though! The trunk is spacious and there's lots of room for groceries and luggage. The outside design is stylish in my opinion, and the rims that come with the limited edition look spiffy. I get lots of compliments on my car from friends and strangers alike! If I were to go back in time to when I was shopping for cars, I would still buy my 15 legacy again.
-
Hi there! If you're looking for a smoother and more powerful ride, I would definitely recommend going for the 3.6. It's a great choice! By the way, the car has 155000 miles on it.
-
Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I noticed that you mentioned having some trouble with the key fobs not opening the trunk. That can definitely be frustrating! One thing you can try is manually opening the door with the key and then pressing the dash button to open the trunk. I know it's not ideal, but it might help in the meantime. On the bright side, it's great to hear that you're enjoying the good gas mileage and safety features, especially Eyesight. Thanks for sharing your thoughts!

I had a few issues with my car, such as the turn signals being too loud and some loose rubber trim for the moon roof. Unfortunately, the service department was not able to fix the issue with the moon roof, which was a common problem. Additionally, there were some problems with the electronics in the passenger front window controls due to sensors in the door. Despite these issues, I enjoyed owning the car for three years and put 21,500 miles on it. However, with the warranty expiring, I decided to trade it in for a Lexus, which I am very happy with.
-
Thanks for updating your review! It's great to hear that you've driven your car for over 18,000 miles with no issues, except for a minor problem with the gas cap which was quickly resolved by your dealer. It's wonderful to hear that you've taken your car on multiple long-distance trips and that it's been a joy to drive. The dual air conditioning zone sounds like a great feature, especially for couples with different temperature preferences. It's also reassuring to hear that the car handles well in different weather conditions. The eyesight and blind spot feature sounds like a useful addition to the car. It's great to hear that you're considering buying a Subaru for your son and we're sure he'll be happy with either the 4 or 6 cylinder Legacy. Thank you for highly recommending the Legacy!

Hello! I just wanted to share my experience with cars over the past 30 years. I've always used Subaru's for 'utility use', like transporting bicycles and sports equipment. However, after my kids left home, I decided to switch to a used 2007 Toyota Camry hybrid sedan for its comfort and fuel efficiency. I really missed having an AWD vehicle though, so I recently purchased a 2015 Legacy. Unfortunately, I was disappointed with the performance of the CVT. But, I'm still glad I have my trusty Camry! The moral of my story is that sometimes newer technology isn't always better. Thank you for listening to my story!

During the winter months in New England, it takes about 20 minutes of driving for my engine to reach its 'normal' operating temperature, with the engine oil temperature at around 150 deg. F. However, during the summer months, the engine warms up much faster, taking only 5 to 8 minutes. According to my Subaru dealer, this is normal and there are no issues with the thermostat. My 18-year-old Forester, on the other hand, reaches its operating temperature within 5 minutes even during the winter months. While my car has had some other issues, such as high road noise, a poorly fitted trunk liner, and stitching imperfections on the rear leather seat, the dealer has been helpful in replacing parts like the front wheel bearing, rear detection indicator radar unit, and gas filler door. One potentially more serious problem is a gradual loss of coolant fluid, with about 2 oz. needing to be added every 6000 miles. The dealer has assured me that the cooling system is working properly. At the 60,000 mile service, the second wheel bearing was replaced. Despite this, I am concerned that they may be using low-quality Chinese bearings.

Although the Legacy has a simple design and a great price tag for all-wheel drive, the lumbar support on the seat did not meet my expectations and caused discomfort. It is advisable to sit in the car for an extended period before making a purchase. As a result, I have decided to trade it in for a new vehicle.

I am disappointed with the issues I experienced with my Legacy, but I am confident in my decision to share my experience. Despite being a loyal Toyota customer, I decided to try the Legacy based on my husband's recommendation. Unfortunately, I experienced several issues with the car, including a whistling wind noise from the passenger window, a stuck fuel cover, a malfunctioning driver's automatic window, and a rattle in the front engine area. While it was frustrating to deal with these problems, I am pleased that the dealership was able to fix them in a timely manner. Although my experience was not ideal, I am confident that Subaru will continue to improve their products and provide better experiences for their customers.

I've mostly owned Toyota's and Honda's in the past. However, when I moved to Colorado, I needed a car with AWD to drive in the snow. After some research, I decided on the Subaru Legacy due to its AWD and good MPG rating. I had high expectations for the quality and reliability of the car, being a Japanese brand. Unfortunately, my experience with the car has not met my expectations. I have had some issues with the moonroof and molding, as well as the heat/AC blower fan failing. Additionally, there have been several recall items that required me to take the car to the dealership. The cabin also has some rattles, which can be frustrating at times. While the SRVD has failed frequently, I am hopeful that the car will continue to perform well. However, I have decided to trade it in at less than 30000 miles because I am concerned about potential future issues with the transmission and Eyesight system. Overall, I have had some challenges with the car, but I am grateful for the time I have had with it.
