2011 Subaru Legacy problems
The Subaru Legacy (Japanese: スバル・レガシィ, Hepburn: Subaru Regashi) is a mid-size car built by Japanese automobile manufacturer Subaru since 1989. The maker's flagship car, it is unique in its class for offering all-wheel drive as a standard feature, and Subaru's traditional boxer engine. The Legacy was sold as the Liberty in Australia out of deference to Legacy Australia, an organisation dedicated to caring for the families of military service veterans.
In 1996, a variant of the Legacy with heightened suspension called the Legacy Outback was introduced to compete in the burgeoning sport-utility vehicle class and proved to be a sales success for Subaru. The Outback line was split into its own model in 2008, known as the Subaru Outback.
As of 2008, 3.6 million Legacy models have been built since its 1989 introduction.
Production of the Legacy ended in Japan in June 2020, with the sixth-generation Legacy being the last model produced and marketed in Japan. Subaru of America announced in an internal email that 2025 will be the last model year for the Subaru Legacy. The Subaru Outback will remain in production, after being the company's top selling model in 2023.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-09-25
- VIN: 4S3BMAG6XB1
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Brakes failed due to a rusty brake line. Rear passenger side where theres a 4 way block 2 lines in 2 lines out. All 4 lines are rusted where they connect, one of the lines broke to cause a significant leak. This caused me to have very little brakes as the vehicle ran out of brake fluid. I can see brake fluid on the ground and diagnosed the issue myself. It seems as it is a common issue. The brake light did come on when the brake fluid was low enough, but at that point there was little to no brakes anyway because the leak was so consistent .
SUSPENSION PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-04-15
- VIN: 4S3BMCK68B3
- Components: SUSPENSION
- Summary: This 2011 Subaru Legacy would pull severely to the right when braking, nearly jerking the steering wheel out of the drivers hand. The car was taken to a private auto repair shop where it was found the motor cradle (part #50527AJ00B) was completed rusted out so the A-arm to the wheel was unstable. In trying to locate a new part, online and from local dealers, it was found the part was on backorder. We were number 142 in line to receive the part. There is obviously a severe and dangerous problem with this issue as a car would veer into the other lane or offroad when braking. Subaru corporate office was contacted and I was told I would have to take the vehicle to the Subaru dealer. This would require a tow so I decided to have the private auto repair shop fix it as it was also undriveable. This complaint is to bring attention to this as a safety issue. My grandchildren were transported in this vehicle and were at risk of serious injury or death because of this problem. I feel Subaru should notify other owners of this problem on this make and model to avoid risk of serious injury or death. I have a video of the car and tire that shows what was happening before I took it to the auto repair shop. I was unable to upload the video file but would like to get it sent for your review. I can be emailed at [email protected]. My phone number is (309) 696-8849. Daniel Brune

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-01-17
- VIN: 4S3BMCC69B3
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: To Whom It May Concern: I am an owner of the Subaru 2011 Legacy AWD, VIN # [XXX], [XXX] at [XXX], Parker, Colorado, reaching out to you about a well-known and recognized toque converter issue described in the 2011 Subaru Legacy F4-2.5 L SOHC, Vehicle - Technical Service Bulletin applicability :2010-2012 MY Legacy Models equipped with CVT Transmission. I purchased my car after its previous owner with a salvage title due to an accident, however it turns out it has a torque converter issue which makes a car die every time I use a break when coming to a stop, described in the above Subaru Technical Service Bulletin. The Subaru of North America has a customer satisfaction program which allows me and similarly situated Subaru Legacy 2010-2012 owners to have this issue without Subaru qualifying it as a safety recall issue. Should this been qualified as a safety recall, my salvage title would be eligible for a free repair from the Subaru of North America, however since this is a frequently reported issue Subaru manufacturer is responsible for creating in the 2010-2012 Subaru Legacy F4-2.5 L vehicles, it allowed the Subaru of North America to use it as a basis for their refusal to repair my vehicle for free provided that the torque converter issue is their responsibility. I'd appreciate you reaching out to me with a possible options which may exist for me as an owner of the vehicle. POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-07-22
- VIN: 4s3bmcl62b3
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: Sometimes as I'm coming to a stop, such as at a red light or a stop sign, just before I stop, the car lurches and then stalls. This is an automatic transmission car, but the best way I can think of to describe what is happening is it is acting as if it is a manual transmission, and when you come to a stop and don't press in the clutch. If this happens at an inopportune time, it could cause an accident. Possibly you're slowing down as you turn through an intersection and it lurches and stalls. You would then be stopped in the middle of the intersection. There are no warning lamps or messages before this happens.
SUSPENSION,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-04-08
- VIN: 4S3BMCK6XB3
- Components: SUSPENSION,UNKNOWN OR OTHER

POWER TRAIN PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-02-03
- VIN: 4s3bmag65b1
- Components: POWER TRAIN
- Summary: It's a 6mt. Randomly reverse stopped working. Seems like it wants to go in reverse. But when any bit of gas pedal pressed it grinds and pops out of reverse. I have no reverse. 1st thru 6th gear works shifting wise. Shifter has some play though.
SEATS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-02-07
- VIN: 4s3bmbc64b3
- Components: SEATS
- Summary: The contact owns a 2011 Subaru Legacy. The contact stated that while driving or coming to a complete stop, the driver's side front seat would inadvertently move back and forth. The vehicle was not diagnosed nor repaired by an independent mechanic or the dealer. The vehicle had previously been serviced for the front driver's side seat by the dealer. The manufacturer was made aware of the failure and informed the contact that the seat warranty had expired and that the contact needed to pay out of pocket for the repair. The failure mileage was approximately 77,000.

REACHED OUT SUBARU USA. SENT VIDEO OF THE OCCURRENCE AND THEY INDICATED THEY COULD NOT CLASSIFY THE OCCURRENCE AND FOUND IT INCONCLUSIVE. I NOTICE IT WOULD OCCUR IN TEMPERATURES LOWER THEN 45 DEGREES FAHRENHEIT. MONTHS LATER THE VEHICLE STARTED FLASHING VARIOUS WARNING LIGHTS SUCH AS CHECK ENGINE, CRUISE CONTROL, VEHICLE DYNAMICS CONTROL. TOOK THE CAR TO LOCAL DEALER AND WAS DIAGNOSED AS A OXYGEN SENSOR. BUT WHAT STARTED OCCURRING AFTER THE REPAIR WAS STARTLING AND DANGEROUS. THE VEHICLE NOW STARTED STALLING OUT WHEN I PRESSED ON THE BRAKES TO STOP. ON LONG DRIVES THIS WOULD NOT OCCUR. IT OFTEN HAPPENS WHEN DRIVING LOCALLY AND STOPPING AT INTERSECTIONS. WHAT I LEARNED TO AND IMPLEMENTED WAS AS THE STALLING WAS STARTING TO OCCUR YOU WOULD GET A JITTERING FROM THE VEHICLE I WOULD SHIFT THE CAR TO NEUTRAL AND THE CAR WOULD NOT STALL. THIS IS NEITHER THE NORM OR SAFE, BUT SAFER THEN STALLING IN AN INTERSECTION WITH VEHICLES COMING AT YOU. THIS ISSUE STILL CONTINUES TO OCCUR. AIR BAGS PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-04-14
- VIN: 4S3BMBA68B3
- Components: AIR BAGS
- Summary: I HAVE OWNED MY LEGACY SINCE '14 AND MY BROTHER OWNED IT BEFORE THAT. HE RARELY HAD PASSENGERS RIDE WITH HIM AND SINCE I'VE OWNED IT THE FEW PASSENGERS I'VE HAD HAVE ALWAYS BEEN HEAVIER THAN ME. (I USUALLY DID ALL THE DRIVING). ABOUT A YEAR AND A HALF AGO, I TOOK A ROAD TRIP WITH A FRIEND AND HE DID MOST OF THE DRIVING. WE STARTED NOTICING THAT WHEN I WAS IN THE PASSENGER SEAT THE AIRBAG LIGHT FOR THE PASSENGER SIDE WOULD SAY OFF. I TRIED ADJUSTING MY SEAT AND CHANGING POSITIONS AND OCCASIONALLY I COULD GET IT TO TURN BACK ON. WE SWITCHED SEATS AND IT IMMEDIATELY WORKED FOR HIM. I AM 5' 9" AND WAS ABOUT 150 # AT THE TIME. HE IS 5'8" AND ABOUT 165. I TOOK IT IN TO THE LOCAL DEALERSHIP AND THEY CONFIRMED SOMETHING WAS INDEED WRONG AND TOLD ME THAT I MUST HAVE SPILLED LIQUID ON THE SEAT THAT HAD RUINED THE SENSORS. THIS DIDN'T MAKE ANY SENSE TO ME BECAUSE WHILE I COULD NOT ACTIVATE THE SENSORS, THE DEALERSHIP EMPLOYEE BEING HEAVIER THAN ME ACTIVATED IT IMMEDIATELY WHEN SITTING IN THE SEAT. MY BROTHER AND I ARE VERY PARTICULAR WITH OUR VEHICLES AND NO SUCH THING EVER OCCURRED. THEY TOLD ME IT WOULD COST A FEW THOUSAND DOLLARS TO FIX. I COULD NOT AFFORD THAT EXPENSE AND FIGURED THAT I WOULD JUST TRY TO LIVE WITH IT. FAST FORWARD TO RECENTLY WHEN I TOOK ANOTHER TRIP WITH A FRIEND AND THIS TIME I COULD NOT GET THE AIRBAG TO TURN ON NO MATTER WHERE OR HOW I SAT. I AM NOW DOWN TO ABOUT 135 # AND APPARENTLY THE SEAT DOESN'T RECOGNIZE THAT WEIGHT AS AN ADULT. I HAVE BEEN RESEARCHING WHAT TO DO FOR THIS PROBLEM BECAUSE, AS A FIRE FIGHTER, I HAVE SEEN WHAT HAPPENS WHEN AN AIRBAG DOES NOT DEPLOY IN A WRECK. I HAVE FOUND MANY FORUMS ONLINE WITH DOZ OF PEOPLE STATING THAT THEY HAVE THE SAME PROBLEM AND HAVE BEEN HAVING IT SINCE THE VEHICLE WAS NEW. THIS IS AN OBVIOUS MANUFACTURING ISSUE THAT HOPEFULLY HAS NOT COST ANY LIVES AND SOA NEEDS TO BE HELD ACCOUNTABLE FOR THEIR DISHONESTY.
STEERING PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-10-25

- Summary: Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain 2009-2013 Forester vehicles, 2008-2011 Impreza vehicles, 2008-2014 WRX vehicles, 2005-2014 Legacy vehicles, 2005-2014 Outback vehicles and 2006-2008 Tribeca vehicles equipped with a mechanical key ignition switch installed as a replacement part. The ball spring inside the switch may break, reducing the strength of the ignition switch. If this occurs, the weight on the key ring and certain road conditions could cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position to the accessory position, turning off the engine.
- Consequence: The engine turning off unexpectedly can increase the risk of a crash. If a crash occurs under this condition, the air bag may not deploy, increasing the risk of injury.
- Remedy: Subaru will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the ignition switch, replacing the ignition switch, if necessary, free of charge. The recall began May 10, 2019. Owners may contact Subaru customer service at 1-844-373-6614. Subaru's number for this recall is WUF-91.

- Manufacturer: Subaru of America, Inc.
- Components: VISIBILITY:WINDSHIELD WIPER/WASHER:MOTOR
- Summary: Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain model year 2010-2014 Legacy vehicles manufactured November 26, 2008, to June 7, 2013, and 2010-2014 Outback vehicles manufactured January 9, 2009 to June 7, 2013. Due to contamination, components within the windshield wiper motor bottom cover may interfere with each other. If an obstruction, such as a buildup of snow or ice prevents the wiper arms from being able to stop in the parked position, the wiper motor may overheat and the bottom cover may melt.
- Consequence: If the windshield wiper motor overheats, the wipers may fail, reducing driver visibility and increasing the risk of a crash. Additionally, the wiper motor cover may melt, increasing the risk of a fire.
- Remedy: Subaru will notify owners, and dealers will replace the windshield wiper motor bottom cover assembly, free of charge. The recall began October 2016. Owners may contact Subaru customer service at 1-800-782-2783. Subaru's number for this recall is WTK-71. Note: This recall supersedes recall 11V-469. - Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
- Summary: Subaru is recalling certain model year 2010-2012 Legacy and Outback vehicles equipped with an automatic or CVT transmission and an Audiovox remote engine starter (RES) accessory, certain model year 2012-2013 Impreza vehicles equipped with a CVT transmission and an Audiovox remote engine starter (RES) accessory, and certain model year 2013 XV Crosstrek vehicles equipped with a CVT transmission and an Audiovox remote engine starter (RES) accessory. Up to 78,650 of these vehicles may have been equipped with accessory puddle lights that, when illuminated, brighten the area under the doors of the vehicle. A short circuit can develop when either the puddle light or connector are exposed to an electrolytic moisture source (such as road spray that has road salt in it) and it penetrates the circuit board of the puddle light or the pins of the puddle light connector(s).
- Consequence: Over time, migration of the moisture into the circuit board and/or into the connector cavity, may result in a short circuit of the puddle light system. This may generate heat which may melt the plastic resulting in smoke or fire.
- Remedy: Subaru will notify owners, and dealers will install an additional fused-harness, free of charge. The recall began February 19, 2013. Owners may contact Subaru at 1-800-782-2783 for more information.

The inside of the truck lid rusts where the water drain holes are. Brought the car back there, less than 3 years old and they did a "goodwill gesture" in repairing. Supposedly took the lid apart and redid it. About 13 months later its back and rustier than ever and the dealer wants no part of it saying the first time was a "goodwill gesture" so they are done. Corporate is working with me and will pay half the cost of the repair. I just dont understand how they can say its normal for a trunk lid to rust on a 3 year old car, fix it and dont stand behind the fix. I love my car but will never buy another - Will Subaru buy this car from me with a rusty trunk lid - probably not.

Great to hear that you're enjoying your new car! With only 500 miles on it, it sounds like you're off to a great start. The AWD, nav/roof, backup cam, and iPod integration are all fantastic features that really add to the driving experience. And the HK 440-watt Dolby audio is simply amazing! It's great to hear that you're finding the car sporty and luxurious, and that you're not missing your old Mazda too much. Thanks for sharing your thoughts with us!

We just purchased this car about a month ago now and have about 3000 miles on it. What a wonderful car. It is a joy to drive, good mileage, we have gotten steady 28's,quiet, comfortable, impressive acceleration. I was a bit skeptical of the CVT Trans, but it performs nicely, I go for the manual mode and the paddle shifters when I feeling racy. I guess time will tell on its longevity, but I have no complaints yet. It will be interesting to see how the car performs in the winter. It is our first Subaru and it will certainly not be our last. We only wish we wouldn't have waited so long to buy one.

Congratulations on your 3rd Subaru! I'm glad to hear that you're enjoying the Legacy's awesome performance, comfort, and handling. The cabin's new window design has made it much quieter than the 09 Legacy Limited, and the folding side mirrors are a great addition. The satin white exterior color looks great and the high quality paint is a nice touch. I highly recommend that people test drive this vehicle before considering other sedans on the market.

As a family that has always been loyal to Honda and Toyota, we decided to try out Subaru for their safe AWD sedan with good mpg. Our only concern was the history of the CVT with other manufacturers and its reliability factor. Despite not being a believer in extended warranties, we purchased one due to the CVT. After having the Legacy for just one week, we can confidently say that it is simply fantastic. It feels solid, roomy, polished, and spirited, with a very Germanic feeling. The build quality is excellent so far, with no rattles or vibrations. For a family sedan, it handles great. We even ordered ours with the HK radio for the Bluetooth phone and media hub, which works great and is very clear and easy to use. We will keep you updated if anything changes.

I recently purchased a used 2011 Subaru Legacy, but unfortunately, it seems to be having some issues. During a test drive, the 'Vehicle Dynamics Control warning light' came on, which should have been a red flag. Although it was fixed, the brake lights stopped working after I had already written the check. However, the issue was taken care of. Unfortunately, both headlights had to be replaced just a little after 3 months. After an oil change at the local dealership, I noticed that I am dumping a quart of oil a week into it and it is 'missing' when accelerating. A number of dash warning lights also came on. An independent mechanic found six failure codes, including one with the engine control module. I think it's time to get rid of this car before it starts costing me more money. I am disappointed, but I am hopeful that I can find a better car soon.

I have put 500 miles on my Subaru Legacy since my last update on 10/9/10. Although the upgraded Continental tires did not improve the ride quality, I am pleased with the interior and seating position. The engine is also very nice. Unfortunately, I am still experiencing steering wheel vibration and the car seems to transmit every road imperfection on all surfaces. In my experience, this is the worst handling, riding, and cornering car I have ever owned. I have owned many cars in my life, and this one is by far the worst. The dealer has been helpful and claims they can fix the issue, but I am skeptical. It seems that Subaru is aware of the problem with the Legacy, yet they continue to produce and ship them with the issue, relying on their dealers to fix it.

We ordered this car in October 2010 and it was delivered in November of the same year. Unfortunately, within the first couple of weeks (December 2010), the driver's side electric window began to malfunction. The window (inside door panel) would make a 'ping' 'clunk' sound, and the engine idle was affected. On occasion, when the driver's window is down, it cannot be made to roll itself back up without multiple attempts, but it always does roll up (2-12 attempts). Additionally, the driver's window will occasionally roll down completely on its own, and on one occasion, it did this when it was only partly up, usually when driving and the window was all the way up. Despite trying a new switch and motor, the problem was not solved.

The interior front driver's sill trim recently popped up and won't stay down, which will be addressed during the next service. The Bridgestone tires have not met my expectations, as they are noisy and have a low wear rating of 260. Additionally, I had to replace one due to a non-repairable puncture, which was quite expensive at $175. According to Tire Rack, only 1.9 out of 10 customers would buy these tires again. During a recent trip, I received a check engine light and had to have the car towed. It turned out to be a ripped gas filler gasket, which the dealer in Upstate NY informed me is becoming a more common issue. Despite these setbacks, I still believe this is a nice car, but Subaru needs to make some improvements to take it to the next level.

I was excited to purchase a 2011 Subaru after reading about the improvements made from the previous model. However, I experienced some issues with the steering wheel vibrating and drifting while driving at higher speeds. I plan to upgrade the tires and have the front end checked to see if that resolves the issue. Despite these challenges, I remain hopeful that the car will meet my expectations. Thank you for your attention to this matter.
