2021 Subaru Legacy problems

subaru logo

The Subaru Legacy (Japanese: スバル・レガシィ, Hepburn: Subaru Regashi) is a mid-size car built by Japanese automobile manufacturer Subaru since 1989. The maker's flagship car, it is unique in its class for offering all-wheel drive as a standard feature, and Subaru's traditional boxer engine. The Legacy was sold as the Liberty in Australia out of deference to Legacy Australia, an organisation dedicated to caring for the families of military service veterans.

In 1996, a variant of the Legacy with heightened suspension called the Legacy Outback was introduced to compete in the burgeoning sport-utility vehicle class and proved to be a sales success for Subaru. The Outback line was split into its own model in 2008, known as the Subaru Outback.

As of 2008, 3.6 million Legacy models have been built since its 1989 introduction.

Production of the Legacy ended in Japan in June 2020, with the sixth-generation Legacy being the last model produced and marketed in Japan. Subaru of America announced in an internal email that 2025 will be the last model year for the Subaru Legacy. The Subaru Outback will remain in production, after being the company's top selling model in 2023.

Common 2021 Subaru Legacy problems

The Subaru Legacy, a Japanese all-wheel drive sedan, is known for its powerful boxer engine, spacious cabin, and ample trunk space. While generally considered a reliable car with excellent safety features, the Subaru Legacy has experienced some issues over the years. This article will discuss the common problems with the 2021 Subaru Legacy based on owner complaints.

  • Hood Latch Problems: Many Subaru Legacy owners have reported issues with the hood latch, which can come loose while driving at highway speeds, causing the hood to bob up and down and potentially obstruct the driver's view of the road. This can lead to the hood flying open, cracking or breaking the windshield. If the hood starts to wobble or impair vision, drivers should pull over immediately.
  • Infotainment System Issues: Some 2021 Subaru Legacy owners have reported problems with the infotainment system, including difficulty using Apple CarPlay, issues with the facial recognition feature, and frustration with the built-in navigation system's inability to find points of interest or accurately recognize voice commands.
  • Safety Concerns: Owners have expressed concerns about the safety of certain features, such as the facial recognition system, which can distract the driver and potentially cause safety issues while driving.

In conclusion, while the Subaru Legacy is generally considered a reliable car, the 2021 model has experienced some common problems, including CVT transmission issues, torque converter problems, hood latch problems, infotainment system issues, and safety concerns. Potential buyers should be aware of these issues and consider them when making a purchasing decision.

  • Summary: After shifting my car into reverse, I slowly started removing my foot from the brake pedal. At this time, the car started rapidly accelerating backwards so I put pressure back on the brake pedal to stop the car. • Date Of Incident: 2023-01-31
  • VIN: 4S3BWGN69M3

  • Summary: The buckle stopped working without cause. Car is only a couple years old and my child attempted to buckle themselves only to find out it didn't lock after trying to buckle in. I took car to subaru dealership and was told that they had no idea why it stopped working and it was not repairable. They attempted to fix it but couldn't figure it out. Thus I could not use this seat in my car due to the danger of not being able to have a passenger buckled. This is scary as there was no reason that the belt no longer buckled and concerns me that the other buckles may be defective, especially if we were to get into a car accident knowing that there's a chance that the buckle may not work.

VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-06-30
  • VIN: 4S3BWAC61M3

After the first time, I had the windshield replaced at my own expense. The second time, Subaru completed the replacement at no cost. The third time, Subaru completed the replacement but refused to pay for it, claiming that an object likely hit the windshield. However, the crack occurred overnight while the car was in my driveway. I believe the windshield is obviously defective and I should be remunerated for at least the last replacement and any future such replacements.

FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2022-05-31
  • VIN: 4S3BWAF66M3
  • Components: FORWARD COLLISION AVOIDANCE
  • Summary: The car's AEB system keeps mistaking steam from the street (such as sewer covers or construction sites) for a physical object and will activate. It has stopped my car in the middle of the street two days ago (5/31/22) and I was almost rear-ended by the car behind me. The warning system will also engage for no reason in most city driving conditions when there is no danger. It mistakes merging with cars with an imminent crash. I do not trust the system and now disable it whenever I drive as it is more likely to cause an accident than to prevent one. This has been a problem since I purchased the car. I contacted the dealer on 5/31/22 but have not heard back.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-09-29
  • VIN: 4S3BWGP63M3
  • Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM
  • Summary: Battery died completely, left me stranded at a gas station. I had to call and get a jump. I've had the car 9 weeks, it only has 690 miles on it. No warning lights prior, did notice a slightly longer crank a couple days prior. I was told by the dealer that I don't drive enough, and I should keep my key at least 30 feet away when the keys are in the house, because that can silently drain the battery. I had not left any lights on or had done anything to drain the battery prior to this occurring. I drove to the gas station with no problem, upon restarting after getting gas, no power, car was dead. I couldn't even move the shifter knob into neutral.

For the cost of the car, this should not be an issue.

UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2021-01-07
  • VIN: 4S3BWGN63M3
  • Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER
  • Summary: ON JANUARY 7, 2020 AT APPROXIMATELY 8AM, I WAS DRIVING MY CAR WHICH HAD BEEN WARMED UP AND DRIVING FOR APPROXIMATELY 15-20 MINUTES WHEN MY WINDSHIELD SPONTANEOUSLY CRACKED ON THE DRIVERS SIDE ABOUT 8 INCHES OFF CENTER. THERE WAS NO VEHICLE IN FRONT OF ME AT THE TIME AND NO VISIBLE OR AUDIBLE DEBRIS THAT COULD HAVE STRUCK THE WINDSHIELD. THE CRACK WAS ABOUT 8 INCHES LONG AND RAN VERTICALLY UP THE WINDSHIELD. FURTHER INSPECTION SHOWED THAT THE CRACK APPEARS TO HAVE STARTED BELOW THE WINDSHIELD WIPER WHERE THE GLASS MEETS THE PLASTIC, A LOCATION WHICH WOULD MAKE IT NEARLY IMPOSSIBLE FOR ANY DEBRIS TO MAKE CONTACT WITH THE WINDSHIELD. THE CRACK HAS NOW SPREAD TO ABOUT 14 INCHES LONG AND NOW RUNNING DIAGONALLY TOWARDS THE PASSENGER SIDE. WEATHER WAS ABOUT 30 AND SUNNY.

Negative 2021 Subaru Legacy car reviews

  1. Haley Lynch 2024-09-23

When you first start the engine in the morning, it may sound like a truck or tractor. Additionally, the infotainment system can be quite laggy and slow. There is also a lot of glare, and it can get very dim under solar light. The auto stop engine feature can be really annoying and intrusive, and it can be very hard to disable. However, despite these issues, it's a shame because I love the brand.

  2. Charles Halvorson 2024-07-17

My 2020 Legacy just turned 1 year old and I'm ready to trade it in. Unfortunately, I haven't had the best experience with this car. It's supposed to have facial recognition to know who I am, but it seems to think I'm one of 5 different drivers. Additionally, it's a bit too sensitive when it comes to safety warnings, even if I just scratch the back of my neck. It can be a bit frustrating when the engine shuts off at every red light and then jerks on. However, I did find that Subaru has good trade-in value, so I was able to sell it and get most of my money back! While I may not choose to own a Subaru again, I appreciate the value they offer.

  3. Ray Jacobs 2024-07-12

The Starlink system has been causing some issues with my car, and unfortunately, it has been in the shop for 8 days and counting. Despite the efforts of the mechanics, they have not been able to fix the problem yet. The infotainment system has a new format that requires too many touch screens to get to anything, which can be unsafe while driving. Additionally, the Android Auto feature has been problematic, often disconnecting while driving. Although the safety features can be distracting at times, the interior of the car is quite nice. While there are some areas for improvement, the driving and acceleration are average. Overall, I am confident that Subaru will continue to improve the design and quality of their cars.

  4. Harmon Marquardt 2024-06-28

My car has already reached 88000 miles, which means I drive a lot, mostly on the highway. I have been driving cars in the US for about 34 years now, and I have never had this many issues with a new vehicle. Unfortunately, I have had to replace the windshield three times already, and the last one was the fourth. Each time, it was due to a small pebble, and it cracks the next day morning. It just cracks as the temperature changes. By the way, I am living in San Jose, CA, which is not cold at all! Additionally, the thermal control valve failed at around 70000 miles, and I had to replace it. The transmission is also starting to go out at 75000, and I have to replace it now, which is making me quite frustrated. Lastly, the touch screen does not work once in a while until the ignition has to be turned off first and the car restarted.

  5. Ashton Stracke 2024-06-11

When I was looking for a new car before the pandemic, five of my friends who own Subarus recommended that I buy one. However, I have found that my experience with the car has not been as positive as I had hoped. The infotainment system is inconvenient and can be distracting when trying to adjust the air conditioning settings. It can be difficult to decide whether to look at the screen or the road. I am concerned that this will be even more of an issue during the winter months. Additionally, I have found that the mileage is only average at best, and plugging in the USB cord can be awkward. The car can also be quite jerky when first driving it. While the trunk is spacious, I have found that it is best to use the back seat if I want to avoid items flying around. When I was cleaning the car, I noticed that the workmanship under the front seats was subpar, with the flaps not put down and the carpet appearing to be cut. I also do not like that the AC vents are vertical in the middle. Finally, I had to turn off the warnings for driving over yellow lines in construction zones, as they would constantly go off. Overall, I would not recommend a Subaru and am waiting until 2021 to start looking for a new car.

Positive 2021 Subaru Legacy car reviews

  1. Sanford Lesch 2024-10-06

A fine vehicle. I really enjoyed driving it! I liked almost everything about it. Although, being short, I found it a bit difficult to reach the gas and brake pedals. Unfortunately, the side view mirror was also in an inconvenient location for me. I had to look for another make.

  2. Clark Prohaska 2024-09-04

If safety, comfort, and driver confidence are your priority, this is the sedan for you. The 2020 Legacy boasts excellent technology and sublime driving manners. I hope to keep this car for many years. I couldn't be happier with my choice. Finally, I have a car that I can see out of with no issues and technology to keep me honest and safe.

  3. Joshuah Haag 2024-08-28

I haven't enjoyed driving a car for a while, but I absolutely love driving this car!

  4. Damon Runte 2024-08-21

Hi there! I hope you're doing well. I noticed that you traded in your 2018 Outback for a new one, that's great! It's always exciting to have new features to explore. I completely understand that some changes can be frustrating, like the GPS starting in the default view and not staying in the last view you had it in. It's also a shame that you can't mute the GPS, even though you can turn it down all the way, the radio still fades out when the GPS is giving directions. I can imagine how these features were useful in the previous model. Thank you for sharing your thoughts with me!

  5. Keon McLaughlin 2024-07-22

I'm so glad to hear that your son is safe after such a scary accident! Even though the car is totaled, it's amazing that the side air bags kept him from getting hurt. The police officer couldn't believe it either! It's great that you're getting him another Subaru. They really are reliable cars. Thank you for sharing this story with me.
