2005 Subaru Legacy problems
The Subaru Legacy (Japanese: スバル・レガシィ, Hepburn: Subaru Regashi) is a mid-size car built by Japanese automobile manufacturer Subaru since 1989. The maker's flagship car, it is unique in its class for offering all-wheel drive as a standard feature, and Subaru's traditional boxer engine. The Legacy was sold as the Liberty in Australia out of deference to Legacy Australia, an organisation dedicated to caring for the families of military service veterans.
In 1996, a variant of the Legacy with heightened suspension called the Legacy Outback was introduced to compete in the burgeoning sport-utility vehicle class and proved to be a sales success for Subaru. The Outback line was split into its own model in 2008, known as the Subaru Outback.
As of 2008, 3.6 million Legacy models have been built since its 1989 introduction.
Production of the Legacy ended in Japan in June 2020, with the sixth-generation Legacy being the last model produced and marketed in Japan. Subaru of America announced in an internal email that 2025 will be the last model year for the Subaru Legacy. The Subaru Outback will remain in production, after being the company's top selling model in 2023.

Common 2005 Subaru Legacy problems
The Subaru Legacy 2005 is known to have several common problems that owners have reported. One of the most frequently mentioned issues is the illumination of the check engine light, often caused by a cracked oxygen sensor element. This is a relatively easy fix, as the element can be replaced with a new one. However, if the element is not the cause, a full diagnostic check is necessary to identify the problem.
Another common problem with the Subaru Legacy 2005 is excessive vibration when accelerating, which is often due to a weak transmission torque convertor. A revised version of the convertor is available, and installation is a straightforward job.
The Legacy is also known for engine overheating, which is usually caused by an oil leak at the camshaft seal or the crankshaft front seal. If there are multiple leaks, it is recommended to replace the timing belt at the same time.
Rapid battery drains are another issue with the Legacy, often caused by the anti-lock brake system (ABS). Subaru has issued an improved ABS relay, which can be ordered directly from BreakerYard for quick delivery.
The handbrake on the Legacy has also been known to have issues, with the electronic handbrake capacitor and the magnetic ring of the sensor being prone to fractures and breakages. Replacing the handbrake actuator is the solution to this problem.
The CVT gearbox on the Legacy has a well-known issue with premature wear, which affected so many vehicles that Subaru extended the warranty cover on the CVT gearbox to an extra ten years. If not covered by warranty, a new CVT gearbox can be ordered, but installation is a challenging DIY job.
The engine on the Legacy has also been known to misfire, with a ticking sound heard when the engine is running. This is often caused by fractured engine valve springs, which can be replaced with new ones.
Lastly, the fuel gauge on the Legacy has been known to give incorrect readings, which is a software issue that can be fixed by head to a Subaru dealership.
These are some of the most common problems reported by Subaru Legacy 2005 owners. It is recommended to be aware of these issues and take preventative measures to avoid them, such as regular maintenance and inspections.

- Summary: The contact owns a 2005 Subaru Legacy. The contact received notification of NHTSA Campaign Number: 14V311000 (Service Brakes, Hydraulic); however, the dealer refused to perform the recall. The contact stated that the dealer exceeded a reasonable amount of time for the recall repair. The manufacturer was made aware of the issue. The contact stated that while driving 35 MPH, while braking for a traffic light, the brake pedal was depressed and went to the floorboard. The contact was able to stop the vehicle and had the vehicle towed to a dealer. The dealer diagnosed the vehicle and determined that the rear passenger side brake line had corroded and needed to be replaced. SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2023-08-05
- VIN: 4S3BP676656
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I noticed a small puddle of fluid by the right rear wheel and immediately brought the vehicle over to Premier Subaru of Fremont, CA for an inspection. Premier Subaru diagnosed the problem as the right rear hard brake line failure and leak due to excessive corrosion. Premier Subaru provided a repair estimate of $3,997.17; stating that this issue needs immediate attention. Back in 2014, there was a service campaign to address this issue; #14V311000 and my car received this service. I've contacted Subaru of America (SOA), Customer Advocacy, about this issue and they are not willing to provide any assistance to address this current issue, even though it is directly related to the 2014 campaign. I am the second owner of this car purchasing it in 2011. The car is in excellent mechanical condition having only 135,000 miles (averaging ~7,100 miles/year) and has spent the last 7 years in the San Francisco, CA area. Pictures of the undercarriage of the car are available should you need them.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2022-08-25
- VIN: 4S3BL676456
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: The rear brakes on the above referenced vehicle failed due to environmental corrosion. This is aligned with recall WQK47-2 which was open for the effected vehicle. The vehicle was transported to Suburban Subaru of Vernon CT for recall resolution. The dealership service department was not willing to complete the repair for different reasons. The vehicle was returned to me, with the rear brakes inoperable, but upon review of NHTSA.gov and Subaru's recall lookup, the recall was marked as Completed. The Service Writer communication with me and the provided Service Invoice from Suburban Subaru of Vernon CT clearly state that the recall was not completed. This is in direct conflict with the reporting to Subaru and NHTSA with regards to Recall Compliance. I reached out to Subaru Customer Advocacy for resolution of this documentation compliance but there was no direct path to re-open the recall and rectify the situation.

I have the same issue that has been documented in the Nissan Altima, Toyota Camry, Mazda 3, Lexus IS 250 and the Lexus 350 according to the GibbsLaw Group. Upon contacting Subaru, I was offered a $500 credit to have the dashboard replaced. This may only be 25% of the cost for replacement. As a safety issue, this should be paid for in full under a manufacturers recall.

ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2018-04-24
- VIN: 4S3BL616657
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,UNKNOWN OR OTHER
- Summary: THE CD PLAYER TURNS ON BY ITSELF WHEN RADIO IS ON. NOTHING SPECIFICALLY MAKES IT HAPPEN LIKE HITTING A BUMP OR ANYTHING IT DOES IT WHILE CAR IS STILL. ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,VISIBILITY/WIPER PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2020-02-07
- VIN: 4S3BP676254
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: I RECENTLY NOTICED THAT SOME ELEMENTS OF MY REAR HATCH ON MY SUBARU LEGACY WAGON WERE NOT WORKING. SPECIFICALLY, THE LIGHTS THAT ILLUMINATE THE LICENSE PLATE, THE REAR DEFROSTER, CENTER BRAKE LIGHT, HATCH LOCKING MECHANISM, AND RADIO ANTENNA WERE NOT WORKING. AN INSPECTION OF THE AREA WHERE THE WIRES ENTER THE HATCH DOOR FROM THE BODY OF THE VEHICLE REVEALS THAT SEVERAL OF THE WIRES IN THE HARNESS WERE BROKEN COMPLETELY WITH SOME WIRES IN VARIOUS STATES OF DETERIORATION. I BELIEVE THIS IS AN UNUSUAL FAILURE AND NOT A TYPICAL WEAR ITEM. I AM CONCERNED AS I HAVE LOST THE ABILITY TO PROPERLY LOCK AND SECURE MY VEHICLE, TO CLEAR FROST AND ICE FROM THE REAR GLASS FOR PROPER VISIBILITY, LOST THE ABILITY TO ILLUMINATE MY LICENSE PLATE WHICH COULD RESULT IN BEING PULLED OVER BY LAW ENFORCEMENT. OVER TIME, CONTINUED DETERIORATION WILL RESULT IN THE INABILITY TO USE MY REAR WIPER AND REVERSE LIGHTS. THEY'RE SEEMS TO BE A DEFECT WITH THE WIRING USED IN THIS AREA. IT WAS NOT CAPABLE OF WITHSTANDING NORMAL USE REPETITIONS OF OPENING AND CLOSING THE HATCH DOOR. THERE ARE MANY MEMBERS OF THE SUBARU LEGACY AND OUTBACK COMMUNITIES THAT HAVE HAD THIS ISSUE OCCUR. I BELIEVE THAT THIS WILL HAPPEN TO ALL SUBARU LEGACY OR OUTBACK MODELS 05-09 GIVEN ENOUGH TIME.
SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2019-09-11
- VIN: 4S3BP676956
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: I WAS DRIVING MY 2005 SUBARU LEGACY AND WAS APPROACHING A TURN. WHILE BRAKING AT MAYBE 30% BRAKE FORCE I FELT A SLIGHT LOSS OF BRAKE PRESSURE. I KNEW RIGHT AWAY SOMETHING WAS VERY WRONG AND TRIED TO LIGHTLY FEEL FOR BRAKE PRESSURE TO SEE IF I WOULD BE ABLE TO EMERGENCY STOP IF NECESSARY. I WAS ABLE TO DOWNSHIFT AND KNEW THE ROADS VERY WELL TO DECREASE SPEED. ONCE STOPPED I WAS ABLE TO MODULATE THE BRAKE AND LOOK UNDER THE CAR. I OBSERVED BRAKE FLUID POURING FROM THE UNDERBODY TRAY DIRECTLY IN FRONT OF THE REAR PASSENGER WHEEL. THESE BRAKE LINES WERE TREATED BY SUBARU AS A PART OF A PREVIOUS RECALL APPROX. 2 YEARS PRIOR WITH A ANTI-CORROSIVE RUST SOLUTION. I'M LEAD TO BELIEVE THERE WAS A SECOND RECALL NOTICE REGARDING THE SAME ISSUE, BUT WHETHER IT WAS COMPLETED BY THE DEALERSHIP AT THAT TIME I DON'T KNOW FOR SURE. I DON'T BELIEVE IT WAS THOUGH. I TOOK MY SUBARU TO THE DEALERSHIP 6 DAYS AGO AND THEY HAVE ORDERED PARTS TO FIX THE ISSUE, AND I'M LEAD TO BELIEVE IT'LL BE PAID IN-FULL BY THE DEALERSHIP. THIS WAS A SUDDEN AND BAD SITUATION, STOPPING DISTANCE WAS GREATLY AND QUICKLY REDUCED. I'M CERTAIN THERE ARE OTHER DRIVERS WOULD NOT HAVE NOTICED THE ISSUE UNTIL MUCH LATER.

- Summary: Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain 2009-2013 Forester vehicles, 2008-2011 Impreza vehicles, 2008-2014 WRX vehicles, 2005-2014 Legacy vehicles, 2005-2014 Outback vehicles and 2006-2008 Tribeca vehicles equipped with a mechanical key ignition switch installed as a replacement part. The ball spring inside the switch may break, reducing the strength of the ignition switch. If this occurs, the weight on the key ring and certain road conditions could cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position to the accessory position, turning off the engine.
- Consequence: The engine turning off unexpectedly can increase the risk of a crash. If a crash occurs under this condition, the air bag may not deploy, increasing the risk of injury.
- Remedy: Subaru will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the ignition switch, replacing the ignition switch, if necessary, free of charge. The recall began May 10, 2019. Owners may contact Subaru customer service at 1-844-373-6614. Subaru's number for this recall is WUF-91.

- Summary: Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain model year 2003-2004 Subaru Baja vehicles manufactured January 22, 2003, to July 21, 2004, 2004-2005 Impreza vehicles manufactured January 28, 2003, to May 31, 2005, 2003-2008 Subaru Legacy vehicles manufactured January 22, 2003, to May 2, 2008, 2003-2008 Subaru Outback vehicles manufactured February 18, 2003, to May 5, 2008, and 2005 Saab 9-2x vehicles manufactured February 11, 2004, to March 17, 2005. The affected vehicles are equipped with a passenger side frontal air bag that may be susceptible to moisture intrusion which, over time, could cause the inflator to rupture upon its deployment.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants potentially resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Subaru will notify their owners and General Motors will notify Saab owners. Dealers will replace the passenger air bag inflator, free of charge. The Subaru recall began on June 17, 2015. Owners may contact Subaru customer service at 1-800-782-2783. The Saab recall began on July 27, 2015. Owners of Saab vehicles may call 1-800-955-9007. Subaru's number for this recall is WQR-53. Note: The recall completely supersedes recall 14V-399 (WQL-48) and partially supersedes recall 14V-763 (WQP-51) in that model year 2004 through 2005 Subaru Impreza and model year 2005 Saab 9-2x vehicles are now only part of this campaign. Note: On December 18, 2015 Subaru informed NHTSA of an expansion of this recall to include certain model year 2003-2004 Subaru Baja, 2003-2008 Subaru Legacy and 2003-2008 Subaru Outback vehicles.

- Summary: Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain model year 2003-2004 Legacy and Outback vehicles, and 2003-2005 Baja vehicles sold, or ever registered, in geographic locations associated with high absolute humidity. Specifically, vehicles sold, or ever registered, in Puerto Rico, Hawaii, the U.S. Virgin Islands, Guam, Saipan, American Samoa, Florida and adjacent counties in southern Georgia, as well as the coastal areas of Alabama, Louisiana, Mississippi and Texas. Upon deployment of the passenger side frontal air bag, excessive internal pressure may cause the inflator to rupture.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passengers frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants potentially resulting in serious injury or death.
- Remedy: Subaru will notify their owners. Dealers will replace the passenger air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall began on January 15, 2015. Owners may contact Subaru at 1-800-782-2783. - Summary: Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain model year 2005-2009 Outback and Legacy, 2008-2011 Impreza and 2008-2014 Impreza WRX/STI, and 2009-2013 Forester vehicles, currently, or formerly, registered in Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. Salt water could splash on the brake lines through a gap in the fuel tank protector, resulting in excessive corrosion of the brake lines. Note that affected vehicles not currently, or formerly registered, in the salt belt states identified above are eligible for repair, at no cost to the customer, upon request.
- Consequence: Brake line corrosion may result in brake fluid leakage. Fluid leakage may result in longer distances being required to slow or stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Subaru will notify owners, and dealers will test the brake system by depressing the brake pedal and inspecting for brake fluid leaks. If no brake fluid seepage is observed, the affected areas will be rustproofed with anti-corrosion wax. If brake fluid seepage is observed, the brake lines will be replaced followed by rustproofing with anti-corrosion wax. These services will be performed free of charge. The recall began July 2014 and second notifications will run through November 2014. Owners may contact Subaru at 1-800-782-2783. Subaru's recall campaign number is WQK-47. Note: This recall supersedes recall 13V-110 which applied to certain 2005-2009 Legacy/Outback vehicles. I'm so glad I chose this car! It's the perfect size for me and has just the right amount of acceleration for merging into traffic. The all-wheel drive is a lifesaver on snowy and wet roads. I love the cheerful look and feel of the light interior and dark blue exterior, and the sunroof makes it even more desirable.

I used to own a 2000 Audi A6 Biturbo and later upgraded to a 2003 Allroad. Eventually, I made the smart decision to switch to the Subaru GT. The Subaru is just as quick as the Audi's, with more road noise, while the interior materials and finishes are 80% of the Audi's. Unlike the Audi, the Subaru does not have any mystery 45 MPH wobble, does not require brake replacements every 5,000 miles, and has no electrical problems. As a consumer, I believe that Subaru took the A4 - A6 and created an inexpensive version that is much more reliable. Overall, the Subaru GT has been a great choice for my family. However, I do miss the A6 Biturbo.

The GT Limited accelerates like a hot sports sedan and handles reasonably well. The front seats are very comfortable and there's plenty of room in the back seat. Both rear seat legroom and cargo space are much better than our '99 Audi A4. However, the stock Bridgestone RE-92 all-season tires are a weak point, with too much initial understeer and poor on-center response. We replaced them with a set of Goodyear F-1 GS-D3's which are much better. If you're looking for a factory optional STI shifter, it's a must-get. Throws are MUCH shorter and feel is MUCH better in all 5 forward gears, but it's a lot harder to get into reverse with the fast shifter. While the shocks could be a little firmer, there's too much float at high speeds.

Great car! It's got very fast acceleration, even for an automatic. It's put together really well. I waited a year and a half for it, and it was totally worth it. It's light years above the outgoing model.

I am so happy with my new legacy! The car is beautiful both inside and out, with a thoughtful design and high-end features that one would expect from a luxury sedan. Some of my favorite features include the moonroof, heated seats, and leather interior. The car handles beautifully, with the AWD providing excellent grip on turns and a great road feel, similar to that of a German sedan. The car also has ample power, accelerating nimbly on the highway and from a stop, especially in sport mode. The cabin is very tight and quiet, with no rattling or noise. Overall, I am thrilled with the car and feel very secure driving it!

Hi there! I noticed that you've had quite a few repairs done on your car, including a replacement of the turbo, gas tank, power steering pump, transaxle, rack and pinion on the right side, head gasket leak, #3 cylinder coil and spark plug. It seems like you're now in need of a timing chain kit replacement. Is there anything else I can help you with?

Although there have been some issues with my Subaru, I have confidence in the brand and its ability to provide reliable transportation. I have had to replace the drive shaft and brake pads, but I trust that these were isolated incidents. While the engine has not performed as well as I had hoped, I remain optimistic about the car's overall capabilities. I appreciate the opportunity to provide feedback and look forward to continued improvements from Subaru.

It took us almost 4 months to find the perfect car, and we finally settled on the GT. Although we have driven 158,000 km, we have had to replace 4 turbos and are now on our 3rd engine. At 120,000 km, we had the last turbo replaced before moving again. Unfortunately, 18,000 km later, the engine had a broken piston and needed to be rebuilt once again. We contacted Subaru Canada, and they acknowledged that we had experienced a lot of bad luck with the car, as all records are kept on their computers. However, since we had moved and lost our maintenance records, we could only show them the records for the service work that we did after the new turbo was put in, and they were unable to help us. We have since had the car rebuilt, but we no longer trust it and have traded it in.

My first Subaru was a 1995 Impreza coupe which I loved dearly. For practicality, I had to get the Legacy so my husband would be a bit more comfortable. I have had the Legacy for one week and I have not quite warmed up to it yet. However, time will tell if it's reliable. I can say that Subaru, in general, makes good cars. Living in snow country, I can attest to the AWD; I couldn't picture driving anything else.

Although my experience with this car was not great, it is important to note that every car is different and my experience may not be representative of the entire brand. However, I did have some issues with the wheel bearings, turbo, clutch, timing belt, and interior plastics, all of which failed after only 60k miles. Additionally, I had to replace the tires after only 20k miles. Despite treating the car with care, using only synthetic oil and premium gas, the check engine light was always on. While I did trade it in for a new Acura, I hope that whoever buys it next has better luck. It is worth noting that my 2001 BMW 740, which is known for being high maintenance, has been more reliable than this car. Overall, I was disappointed with my experience with this Subaru. However, it is important to remember that every car is different and my experience may not be representative of the entire brand.
