The Subaru Legacy (Japanese: スバル・レガシィ, Hepburn: Subaru Regashi) is a mid-size car built by Japanese automobile manufacturer Subaru since 1989. The maker's flagship car, it is unique in its class for offering all-wheel drive as a standard feature, and Subaru's traditional boxer engine. The Legacy was sold as the Liberty in Australia out of deference to Legacy Australia, an organisation dedicated to caring for the families of military service veterans.

In 1996, a variant of the Legacy with heightened suspension called the Legacy Outback was introduced to compete in the burgeoning sport-utility vehicle class and proved to be a sales success for Subaru. The Outback line was split into its own model in 2008, known as the Subaru Outback.

As of 2008, 3.6 million Legacy models have been built since its 1989 introduction.

Production of the Legacy ended in Japan in June 2020, with the sixth-generation Legacy being the last model produced and marketed in Japan. Subaru of America announced in an internal email that 2025 will be the last model year for the Subaru Legacy. The Subaru Outback will remain in production, after being the company's top selling model in 2023.

Common 1997 Subaru Legacy problems

Based on complaints from owners of the 1997 Subaru Legacy, several common problems have been reported:

  1. Head Gasket Issues:
    • The 1997 Subaru Legacy is known for head gasket problems. Owners have experienced head gasket leaks, leading to coolant leaks and potential engine overheating issues. This problem can be costly to repair as it often requires the engine to be removed for the necessary repairs.
  2. Transmission Torque Converter Issues:
    • Another common problem with the 1997 Subaru Legacy is premature wear of the transmission torque converter. This issue can cause excessive vibration in the vehicle, especially during acceleration. Subaru has released a revised version of the torque converter to address this issue.
  3. Engine Misfire and Ticking Sound:
    • Owners have reported instances of engine misfires and ticking sounds coming from the engine of the 1997 Legacy. These symptoms are often caused by fractured engine valve springs. Replacing the valve springs is necessary to resolve this issue and ensure proper engine performance.
  4. Overheating and Oil Consumption:
    • Some 1997 Subaru Legacy owners have faced overheating problems along with increased engine oil consumption. These issues can be indicative of oil leaks, commonly found at the camshaft seal or crankshaft front seal. Addressing these leaks promptly is crucial to prevent further engine damage.
  5. Electronic Handbrake Failure:
    • The electronic handbrake system in the 1997 Legacy may experience failures, leading to issues with handbrake functionality. Components like the handbrake actuator, capacitor, and sensor magnetic ring are prone to fractures and breakages, necessitating replacements to restore proper handbrake operation.

These common problems reported by owners of the 1997 Subaru Legacy highlight some of the key issues that can affect this particular model. Addressing these issues promptly and with the help of professional mechanics can help maintain the performance and reliability of the vehicle.

  • Date Of Incident: 2013-09-20
  • Components: SUSPENSION,EQUIPMENT
  • Summary: I INSTALLED MEVOTECH STRUT MOUNTS (MP903987 & MP903986) ON OUR 1997 SUBARU LEGACY POSTAL WHEN INSTALLING NEW REAR SHOCK ABSORBER/STRUTS. THE RIGHT SIDE FAILED ON THE FIRST DAY AFTER AROUND 60 MILES. I REPLACED IT WITH THE ORIGINAL FACTORY PART THAT HAD LASTED 420,000 MILES. THE LEFT SIDE FAILED THE NEXT DAY AFTER BEING IN SERVICE FOR APPROXIMATELY 100 MILES TOTAL. I RETURNED THE OTHER ORIGINAL PART TO SERVICE. THE FAILURES ALLOWED THE STRUT TO PUSH THROUGH THE MOUNT AND HIT ON THE THIN RETAINING PLATE. IT ALLOWED THE REAR SUSPENSION TO BECOME EXTREMELY LOUD AND LOOSE. I REPORTED THIS TO THE MANUFACTURER AND RECEIVED NO RESPONSE. I REPORTED IT TO THE SELLER, ROCKAUTO, AND THEIR RESPONSE WAS THAT I SHOULD DO MORE RESEARCH ON PART QUALITY. I BELIEVE THERE IS A DIFFERENCE BETWEEN POOR QUALITY AND DANGEROUS DEFECT. I HAVE THE FAULTY MEVOTECH PARTS IN THEIR ORIGINAL BOXES. *TR

  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE,STRUCTURE
  • Summary: GASOLINE FILLER TUBE ON SUBARU LEGACY MODELS (1994 & 1997) RUST OUT AND CAUSE VERY SERIOUS DANGER FROM POSSIBLE FIRE/EXPLOSION DUE TO LEAKING FUEL. THIS APPEARS TO BE A VERY COMMON PROBLEM FOR SUBARU OWNERS AND COSTLY ($350+) TO REPAIR. THIS PART WAS REPLACED ON BOTH A 1994 AND A 1997 SUBARU LEGACY AND THE REPAIR SHOP INDICATED THAT THIS IS A COMMON PROBLEM THAT THEY HAVE DEALT WITH QUITE OFTEN. I FEEL THE PROBLEM IS VERY DANGEROUS AND SHOULD BE ADDRESSED BY THE MANUFACTURER. *TR

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2009-02-18
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: I AM SURE YOU HAVE RECEIVED OTHER COMPLAINTS REGARDING THE 2.5L ENGINE IN 1997 SUBARU LEGACY GT'S. THE HEAD GASKETS ARE VERY WEAK, WHICH WHEN THEY BLOW, CAN CAUSE A LOSS OF POWER DUE TO A RUSH OF COOLANT FLOWING INTO THE SYSTEM, WHICH KILLS THE ENGINE. THIS PROBLEM IS VERY WIDESPREAD, AND SUBARU DOES NOT ADMIT ANYTHING. HOWEVER, IN CANADA, SUBARU WAS SUED FOR THIS SAME ISSUE. THERE ARE THOUSANDS OF PEOPLE OUT THERE THAT ARE EXPERIENCING ERRATIC FAILURE WITH THESE HEAD GASKETS, AND THERE ISN'T EVEN A TSB ON THEM. PLEASE, HELP US!

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2008-11-01
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: I WAS OUT DRIVING ON A SUNNY SUNDAY WITH A COUPLE OF FRIENDS TO SEE THE FALL COLOR, AND WITHOUT WARNING MY CAR OVERHEATED. I TOOK IT TO MY MECHANIC TO HAVE FIND OUT WHAT CAUSED THE PROBLEM AND HE SAID IT WAS A "BLOWN HEAD GASKET". I HAVE NOT HAD THE REPAIRS DONE YET BECAUSE I AM TRYING TO DECIDE WHETHER OR NOT TO PUT IN A NEW ENGINE OR JUST REPAIR THE OLD ONE. THE COST IS GOING TO BE IN EXCESS OF $1500 DOLLARS EITHER OPTION AND AFTER DOING A BIT OF RESEARCH I HAVE FOUND THAT THERE ARE MULTIPLE WEBSITES OUT THERE WITH PEOPLE WHO ARE SUFFERING THE SAME PROBLEMS. THIS PROBLEM ONLY SEEMS TO EFFECT A CERTAIN NUMBER OF YEAR MODELS AND I WOULD LIKE TO HAVE SUBARU DO SOMETHING TO HELP ALERT THOSE WHO WILL POTENTIALLY BE BUYING THESE VEHICLES WITH NO KNOWLEDGE OF WHAT THEY ARE BUYING INTO. *TR

FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2008-09-27
  • Components: FUEL SYSTEM, GASOLINE
  • Summary: AFTER A GAS FILL-UP, I NOTED A LARGE WET SPOT UNDER THE REAR PASSENGER SIDE OF THE VEHICLE. BECAUSE IT SMELLS LIKE GAS, I TOOK IT TO MY AUTHORIZED SUBARU MECHANIC AND WAS ADVISED THAT THE FILLER NECK WAS LOOSE. IN ORDER TO FIX THE MANUFACTURER DEFLECTIVE, HE WOULD HAVE TO REMOVE THE REAR AXLE. SINCE THE CAR IS 11 YEARS OLD WITH OVER 83K MILES, THE CAR IS OF COURSE OUT OF WARRANTY. HOWEVER, IN MY OPTION, MY 1997 SUBARU LEGACY GT SEDAN IS NOW CONSIDERED UNSAFE TO DRIVE UNDER ANY SPEED. I RECOMMENDED THAT SUBARU TAKES THE INITIATE BY ISSUING A RECALL BEFORE SOMEONE DIES AS RESULT OF THIS MANUFACTURER DEFLECTIVE. *TR

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2008-01-15
  • VIN: 4S3BD4354V7
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
  • Summary: IN COLD WEATHER (ZERO OR BELOW), THE BRAKE PEDAL ON MY 1997 SUBARU LEGACY SEDAN BECOMES HARD, AND WHEN I PUT IT ANY GEAR, FORWARD OR REVERSE, THE IDLE SPEED WILL CAUSE THE CAR TO MOVE AND THE BRAKES WILL NOT STOP THE CAR-I HAVE TO SHIFT INTO NEUTRAL. I HAVE LEARNED THAT PUMPING THE BRAKE PEDAL WHILE THE CAR IS AT IDLE IN N OR P WILL USUALLY HELP, AT -20 DEGREES, I HAVE TO LET THE CAR IDLE FOR 5 TO 10 MINUTES AND THEN TRY IT. THE DEALER INDICATED THAT THIS IS NOT UNCOMMON, BUT THAT THERE IS NO EASY FIX FOR THIS. THIS HAS HAPPENED EVERY WINTER SINCE I BOUGHT THE CAR IN 2001. *TR

ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2007-07-21
  • VIN: 4S3BG6857V7
  • Components: ENGINE AND ENGINE COOLING
  • Summary: SUDDEN OVERHEATING OCCURRING MOSTLY ABOVE 60 KM/H SYMPTOMS INCLUDED LARGE POCKETS OF AIR IN COOLING SYSTEM AS WELL AS SMALL BUBBLES. FIRST THOUGHT BY MECHANIC WAS HEAD GASKET, HOWEVER TESTS ON COOLANT SHOWED OTHERWISE. SMALL LEAK FOUND IN WATER PUMP GASKET, REPLACED ENTIRE PUMP AND GASKET, AS WELL AS THERMOSTAT, BELTS, HOSES, ETC. CURRENT RESEARCH HAS PROVEN THAT YEARS 1997 THROUGH 2002 ALL DO THIS AS A RESULT OF A DESIGN FLAW THAT CAUSES THE HEAD GASKET TO FAIL. *JB

SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2005-08-08
  • VIN: 4S3BD6757V6
  • Components: SERVICE BRAKES, HYDRAULIC
  • Summary: RIGHT FRONT BRAKE HAS FAILED TO OPERATE PROPERLY ON AT LEAST FOUR OCCASIONS. THE BRAKES HAVE GOTTEN VERY HOT AND COULD POSSIBLY CAUSE A FIRE OR CAUSE THE BRAKES TO LOCK UP. THE DUAL PISTON DESIGN RESULTS IN ONE PISTON DOING MOST OF THE WORK SO THE OTHER PISTON BECOMES STIFF AND DOES NOT RELEASE. WE HAVE HAD THE BRAKES GRAB AND BECOME EXTREMELY HOT TO THE POINT THAT WE ARE NOW ON OUR FOURTH SET OF CALIPERS WITH JUST OVER 36,000 MILES ON THE CAR. OUR MECHANIC ADVISES THIS PROBLEM IS QUITE COMMON ON SUBARU'S FOR AT LEAST THE 1996 THROUGH 1998 MODEL YEARS. WE HAVE HAD THE BRAKES REPLACED THREE TIMES BUT DO NOT HAVE THE OLD PARTS AVAILABLE. *JB

LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES PROBLEM

  • Date Of Incident: 2005-03-20
  • VIN: 4S3BG6859V7
  • Components: LATCHES/LOCKS/LINKAGES
  • Summary: APRROX. 3 MONTHS AGO I WAS DRIVING DOWN A HIGHWAY AT ABOUT 65 MILES AN HOUR WHEN MY HOOD POPPED UP AND HIT THE WINDSHIELD. THE WINDSHIELD WAS CRACKED IN MANY PLACES AND THE HOOD WAS BENT AND PAINT CHIPPED. I CONTACTED SUBARU THE FOLLOWING DAY BECAUSE MY HOOD HAD NOT BEEN OPENED FOR APPROX 2MTHS PRIOR THIS AND WAS CONCERNED OF A DEFECT IN PART. THEY TOLD ME THERE WAS NONE AND SOMETIMES IT JUST HAPPENS. I PAID FOR A NEW WINDSHIELD (I BELEIVE ABOUT 235) AND HAVE YET TO REPLACE HOOD. TODAY I WAS INFORMED BY A TECHNICIAN THAT REPLACES WINDSHIELDS (CONTACT WAS UNRELATED TO MY CAR) THAT HE REPLACES MORE WINDSHIELDS ON SUBARUS THAN ANY OTHER CAR BECAUSE THE FIRST HOOD LATCH FAILS AND THE SECOND LETS GO WHEN HIGH WAY SPEED IS REACHED. I BELIEVE THIS IS A PART MALFUNCTION THAT POSES A SERIOUS THREAT TO DRIVERS AND SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED. IF I HAVE CONTACTED THE WRONG DEPARTMENT OR COMPANY PLEASE DIRECT ME IN RIGHT DIRECTION. I AM UNSURE BUT COULD FIND OUT OF THE EXACT INCIDENT DATE.

Negative 1997 Subaru Legacy car reviews

I bought this car at 170,000m and it's still running strong at 205,000m with routine maintenance. We did replace the 02 sensors around 200,000m, as well as the brakes, rotors, and cv shaft. Other than oil changes, tires, and other typical replacements, this car has been a dream!

We absolutely adored this car, so much so that we affectionately named it 'Soobie'. It held the title of the best car we had ever owned until we purchased our new 2004 Legacy. This car was not only economical (thanks to its 5-speed transmission), but also incredibly reliable (requiring only a few repairs over 130,000 miles) and safe (I was once rear-ended at a stop light and the car that hit me had to be flat bedded, while I was able to drive to work). We eventually sold this car to a friend, albeit reluctantly, and were heartbroken to hear that it was eventually totaled in an accident.

I hope you're doing well! I wanted to share my experience with my car that I bought in early August. It had 339,500 miles on it at the time, and now it has over 400k miles. Overall, I'm pretty happy with it! There are a few minor issues, like the hatch not opening and the gas gauge not working, but the gas dummy light does work. Additionally, the seat heaters, 12v outlets, and heated power mirrors all work, but unfortunately, they're all on the same 20 amp fuse, so I can't use the 12v outlet. I'm not sure how to fix it, but everything else works great! The car has great gas mileage, almost 400 miles on one tank, and the performance and handling are really satisfying. The only downside is that the stereo is a bit weak, and I haven't been able to find a wiring converting kit for it. Thanks for listening!

The Subaru brand, much like Saab, has its roots in airplane companies. Despite the expensive repairs, the build quality and performance are amazing for the price. The Subaru 2.5 has a reputation for blowing head gaskets if not properly maintained, but with proper care, you can experience all-wheel drive like no other car company can offer. Personally, I have owned both a WRX and an Outback, and both have been fantastic vehicles.

This car has a great look and feel, with plenty of room and AWD capabilities. However, I have had some issues with it since purchasing it, including a bad water pump, blown head gaskets, a bad thermostat, and a bad knock sensor. These issues have resulted in over two weeks of time in the shop and over fifteen hundred dollars in repairs. While I have lost some faith in Subaru due to these issues, I still appreciate the car's initial appeal.

This car may not be a Mercedes, but it offers outstanding reliability for a four-cylinder car. When I purchased my 2.5L wagon, it had 190,000 miles on it. Now, with 280,000 miles on it, it runs just as well as when I bought it. From the coast of California to the coast of North Carolina, this car has only needed an occasional oil change. Whether you're a first-time car buyer or someone who wants a reliable car to keep miles off their nice car, you can't go wrong with this one. I will say that the acceleration is terrible, and some people have complained about the head gasket blowing, but I think it's because they tried to drive the car too hard. As long as you keep the timing belt changed and drive sensibly, this car will take great care of you. Other notes: I have a 130lb dog, and she fits fine in there. The seats lay down, giving me plenty of storage room. In fact, because I travel so much, I usually get a memory foam mattress topper, and it makes a perfect bed for me and her (I'm 6'1). This car also eats oil, so just be sure you check the oil every 3000 miles or so. Another thing I noticed when I was in the desert was that it started to overheat after sitting stationary for about 5 minutes. I turned it off to let it cool, and it was all good. As far as the steering goes, it's definitely a longer car. Ever since I've owned the car, if I make a sharp turn at low speeds, it shakes and vibrates a lot. I'm not sure why, but it's never hurt anything. The seat padding somewhat wears out on the outside, and you can feel the wire frame after a while of getting in and out of the car. But the fabric is good material and won't rip easily. Also, the car has a feature where it notifies you if a specific door is open. They tend to fail over time, and it may be telling you a door is open when it's not. That's kind of annoying, but overall, this car is a great choice for anyone looking for a reliable ride. The tailgate light may occasionally misread whether the rear door is open or not, which can be a bit irritating. However, the carpet is easy to clean and doesn't trap hair, which is great for pet owners. If you change elevation quickly, such as going through the Rocky Mountains, the oxygen sensor may trigger the check engine light, but it can easily be cleared once you return to a more steady elevation. It's important to keep the tire pressure even to avoid any issues like the rear end whine that I experienced when I first bought the vehicle. Lastly, the cup holders are a bit small, which is something to keep in mind. Overall, this is a great vehicle that is easy to maintain and perfect for pet owners!

Great car! I totally understand your concern about the gas mileage though.

This 97 Legacy Wagon Limited is a true rockstar with a punk rock edge. However, she sold out a bit earlier in her career when she decided on some rather basic styling and comfort elements. But when she hits those high notes, she sings like any of the more modern cars she zooms past. With 190k miles on the clock, she joined my band of broke down Audis and BMWs, and has made me forget why I ever thought a German could hold a candle to her siren song. She has never failed me, and in less than a year, I have put 45k miles of punishment on her. After a quick and dirty overhaul of belts, alternator, water pump, flushing the cooling system, replacing the plugs with NGKs and wires, giving her stomach a pump, and pouring in some Mobile One full synthetic, she has responded by becoming what she was born to be - a rocking lead diva who beats the brakes off all comers. She was neglected and discarded when I received her, but after a little shine, detail, and tune, boy chowder, this broad can wail. She takes all my bad habits - heavy foot, off-roading, off-roads - and she just keeps pushing me. Here's a thing that has me and her a little annoyed - this 20+ year old car wants some top end. Seems she is governed out at about 110, gets there and just sticks like in cruise control. There's lots of room left on the RPM gauge for her to keep climbing, but no love. I've tried uphill, downhill, flat, but she stops at the same speed as if someone were pulling on a leash. Please advise if there is a way to recode or bypass this restraint on my punk rock girl. She is everything I always needed, nothing I would have ever dreamed of wanting, but now I can't live without her.

This car is really enjoyable to drive. Whenever I'm with my friends, I always offer to drive because I love it so much. I recently went to Costa Rica and couldn't wait to get back and drive my Legacy again. It's incredibly easy to maintain, very well designed, and highly reliable. When it's time, I will definitely buy another one...

Hey there! I bought this car back in August for $500. It's been a great ride so far, but the clutch is starting to go, so I have to take it slow until I can find a cheap replacement. Despite a few minor issues like a faulty rear hatch latch, a seized rear wiper motor, and a gas gauge that doesn't work (though the dummy light does), this car has been a reliable and solid ride. It's got a bit of rust on the body, but the frame is still in great shape. I've put a lot of miles on it - 341,000 to be exact - and it's still going strong! I've even taken it off-road a few times and it's handled great. Plus, the gas mileage is fantastic for an AWD. Overall, I'm really happy with my purchase.
