The Subaru Legacy (Japanese: スバル・レガシィ, Hepburn: Subaru Regashi) is a mid-size car built by Japanese automobile manufacturer Subaru since 1989. The maker's flagship car, it is unique in its class for offering all-wheel drive as a standard feature, and Subaru's traditional boxer engine. The Legacy was sold as the Liberty in Australia out of deference to Legacy Australia, an organisation dedicated to caring for the families of military service veterans.

In 1996, a variant of the Legacy with heightened suspension called the Legacy Outback was introduced to compete in the burgeoning sport-utility vehicle class and proved to be a sales success for Subaru. The Outback line was split into its own model in 2008, known as the Subaru Outback.

As of 2008, 3.6 million Legacy models have been built since its 1989 introduction.

Production of the Legacy ended in Japan in June 2020, with the sixth-generation Legacy being the last model produced and marketed in Japan. Subaru of America announced in an internal email that 2025 will be the last model year for the Subaru Legacy. The Subaru Outback will remain in production, after being the company's top selling model in 2023.

HOWEVER, IN MY OPTION, MY 1997 SUBARU LEGACY GT SEDAN IS NOW CONSIDERED UNSAFE TO DRIVE UNDER ANY SPEED. THE WINDSHIELD WAS CRACKED IN MANY PLACES AND THE HOOD WAS BENT AND PAINT CHIPPED. I CONTACTED SUBARU THE FOLLOWING DAY BECAUSE MY HOOD HAD NOT BEEN OPENED FOR APPROX 2MTHS PRIOR THIS AND WAS CONCERNED OF A DEFECT IN PART. THEY TOLD ME THERE WAS NONE AND SOMETIMES IT JUST HAPPENS. I PAID FOR A NEW WINDSHIELD (I BELEIVE ABOUT 235) AND HAVE YET TO REPLACE HOOD. TODAY I WAS INFORMED BY A TECHNICIAN THAT REPLACES WINDSHIELDS (CONTACT WAS UNRELATED TO MY CAR) THAT HE REPLACES MORE WINDSHIELDS ON SUBARUS THAN ANY OTHER CAR BECAUSE THE FIRST HOOD LATCH FAILS AND THE SECOND LETS GO WHEN HIGH WAY SPEED IS REACHED. I BELIEVE THIS IS A PART MALFUNCTION THAT POSES A SERIOUS THREAT TO DRIVERS AND SHOULD BE INVESTIGATED. IF I HAVE CONTACTED THE WRONG DEPARTMENT OR COMPANY PLEASE DIRECT ME IN RIGHT DIRECTION.   • Remedy: DEALERS WILL NOTIFIY CUSTOMERS TO BRING THEIR VEHICLE TO AN AUTHORIZE DEALERSHIP TO HAVE A SPRING GUARD INSTALLED ON BOTH FRONT STRUTS TO PREVENT TIRE PUNCTURE AND REPLACE ANY BROKEN SPRINGS FREE OF CHARGE.     This vehicle has a spacious interior that I still appreciate, however, I have experienced several costly repairs. Despite regular maintenance, the alternator broke early on, which was later reimbursed due to a recall. Unfortunately, I am now facing another expensive repair of over $1250 to replace the head gaskets, with no explanation as to what caused the issue. While I am disappointed in the reliability of my car, I remain confident in my ability to address these challenges and find a solution.

    I require a valve job despite the car being just out of warranty. Subaru did not provide any assistance with the considerable cost. Additionally, several other components have malfunctioned. Overall, this car has been a significant disappointment.

    At first, we were in the honeymoon stage. However, we started experiencing issues such as constantly needing brakes or hearing brake sounds. We had to replace the AT clutch cylinder, which cost $1200. We also had to deal with smoking and dripping oils, even after replacing different seals and gaskets. Recently, we have been hearing strange suspension sounds. Additionally, we were surprised to find out that there is a heater light that we never knew existed! Despite these issues, the car has been handy in the snow and I love not having to stop and chain up, although it is not infallible. If you live on a dirt road, I would advise against buying a dark blue car. The inside of the car is quite noisy and sounds cheap. We also always hear an engine ticking sound.

    After 7 years and approximately 65,000 miles, the car unfortunately experienced some engine problems such as engine seal leakage and throttle sensor failure. These issues have been reported by other reviewers as well. The dealer has estimated that the repairs would cost close to $3,000. An independent mechanic has also confirmed the dealer's assessment, but would charge a slightly lower amount for the repairs. Although the low mileage of the car suggests that these issues should not have occurred, the mechanic has mentioned that he has replaced Subaru engines due to similar problems. While I will not be fixing the car, I will be trading it in. However, I will not be purchasing another Subaru. It is unfortunate, but I have lost confidence in the brand.

It's great to know that it performs well on both long and short drives, and that you've only had to do normal maintenance items.     If your car smells like burnt oil after driving, make sure to check the oil often! I was only 3,800 miles into an oil change when the engine ran out of oil and burnt up, causing a lot of damage. Unfortunately, there were no warning signs or panel lights to indicate the problem, even though I was watching the gauges closely. I had to get a rebuilt engine for $4600, which was quite expensive. Additionally, the car had grinding brakes every now and then and needed a new catalytic converter, which cost $800 for the non-generic one. However, I must say that the car has been running smoothly since then, even though it has now reached 150K miles. The gas mileage is great, ranging from 23-30 mpg, and it has never gotten under 23mpg, even in stop-and-go traffic. I absolutely love driving it around, especially in bad road conditions. Love is gentle, love is kind, and love pays for any number of repairs!

    I bought this vehicle used with 200,000 miles and have put almost 230,000 miles on it. Although I was told the transmission was going out, I was able to drive it for 6 months before having to replace it. I put in a used transmission and have had no problems since. I have owned Chevy's, Dodges, Fords, and Toyotas, and I must say that this is one of the most reliable vehicles I have had so far.

    The car has been incredibly reliable, with the exception of the battery dying once. Despite being involved in a major crash in its first year, it has given me no other problems. The car has interesting styling, with an opening in the hood and aggressive-looking wheels. It definitely stands out and won't be mistaken for an old Buick wagon. In 1997, there was no other wagon with a manual shift that looked this good for a reasonable price. The manual shift is very pleasant, making this car fun to drive despite not having earth-shattering power.
