The Subaru Legacy (Japanese: スバル・レガシィ, Hepburn: Subaru Regashi) is a mid-size car built by Japanese automobile manufacturer Subaru since 1989. The maker's flagship car, it is unique in its class for offering all-wheel drive as a standard feature, and Subaru's traditional boxer engine. The Legacy was sold as the Liberty in Australia out of deference to Legacy Australia, an organisation dedicated to caring for the families of military service veterans.

In 1996, a variant of the Legacy with heightened suspension called the Legacy Outback was introduced to compete in the burgeoning sport-utility vehicle class and proved to be a sales success for Subaru. The Outback line was split into its own model in 2008, known as the Subaru Outback.

As of 2008, 3.6 million Legacy models have been built since its 1989 introduction.

Production of the Legacy ended in Japan in June 2020, with the sixth-generation Legacy being the last model produced and marketed in Japan. Subaru of America announced in an internal email that 2025 will be the last model year for the Subaru Legacy. The Subaru Outback will remain in production, after being the company's top selling model in 2023.

THE PIECE OF PAPER I RECEIVED HAD ALL ZEROS FOR THE DOLLAR AMOUNTS, SINCE THE DEALER LIED TO ME ABOUT HAVING TO REMOVE THE DASHBOARD TO CHECK THE AIRBAG, I AM SUSPICIOUS. COULD THE DEALER USE THE PAPERS I SIGNED TO CLAIM TO HAVE REPLACED THE AIRBAG, BUT NOT DONE SO??? THE LIKELIHOOD OF THEM GETTING CAUGHT WOULD BE VERY LOW. I KNOW THAT THE DASHBOARD WAS NOT REMOVED BECAUSE OF COBWEBS THAT WERE NOT DISTURBED BETWEEN THE DASH AND THE CAR. THE DEALER TOLD ME THAT THE AIRBAG DID NOT NEED TO BE REPLACED AFTER THEY CHECKED THE SERIAL NUMBER.

  • Summary: FOR AT LEAST 3 YRS NOW, WE'VE BEEN EXPERIENCING VERY STRONG RAW FUEL SMELL IN THE CABIN IN COLD WEATHER ESPECIALLY WHEN THE TEMP DROPS NEAR FREEZING POINT IN THE WINTER. THE FUEL SMELL IN THE CABIN HAPPENED WHEN ENGINE WAS ON AND THE CAR WAS EITHER STATIONARY, IN MOTION OF ANY SPEED IN COLD WEATHER. WE DIDN'T NOTICE THE FUEL SMELL IN THE SUMMER OR IN WARM WEATHER MONTHS. THE FUEL SMELL WAS SO BAD THAT AT TIME WE HAD TO OPEN THE WINDOWS IN THE WINTER TO AIR IT OUT. OUR BIGGEST CONCERN IS THAT IT MIGHT CATCH ON FIRE AND COMPROMISE OUR SAFETY. SUBARU HAS RECALL NO. WVK-21 FOR 2002-2003 SUBARU WRX MODELS, BUT NOT FOR OTHER MODELS WITH THE SAME ENGINE AND MODEL YEARS. PLEASE SEE THAT SUBARU INVESTIGATES THE PROBLEM AND MAKES THE APPROPRIATE REPAIRS. MANY THANKS, ANDREW

  • Manufacturer: Subaru of America, Inc.
  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:PASSENGER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
  • Summary: Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain model year 2003-2004 Legacy, Outback, 2006-2008 Impreza, Tribeca, 2006 Saab 9-2x, and 2003-2006 Baja vehicles originally sold or that have ever been registered in Arizona, Arkansas, Delaware, District of Columbia, Illinois, Indiana, Kansas, Kentucky, Maryland, Missouri, Nebraska, Nevada, New Jersey, New Mexico, North Carolina, Ohio, Oklahoma, Pennsylvania, Tennessee, Virginia, and West Virginia, or "Zone B." These vehicles may be equipped with certain air bag inflators assembled as part of the passenger frontal air bag modules, and used as original equipment or replacement equipment. In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the front air bags, these inflators may rupture due to propellant degradation occurring after long-term exposure to absolute humidity and temperature cycling.
  • Consequence: An inflator rupture may result in metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Subaru will notify their owners. General Motors will notify Saab owners. Dealers will replace the passenger frontal air bag inflator, free of charge. The recall began August 24, 2016. Owners may contact Subaru customer service at 1-856-488-8500. Subaru's number for this recall is TKB-16. Note: This notice is only for vehicles that were not covered by 16V-358 for Zone A.

  • Components: AIR BAGS:FRONTAL:PASSENGER SIDE:INFLATOR MODULE
  • Summary: Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain model year 2003-2004 Subaru Baja vehicles manufactured January 22, 2003, to July 21, 2004, 2004-2005 Impreza vehicles manufactured January 28, 2003, to May 31, 2005, 2003-2008 Subaru Legacy vehicles manufactured January 22, 2003, to May 2, 2008, 2003-2008 Subaru Outback vehicles manufactured February 18, 2003, to May 5, 2008, and 2005 Saab 9-2x vehicles manufactured February 11, 2004, to March 17, 2005. The affected vehicles are equipped with a passenger side frontal air bag that may be susceptible to moisture intrusion which, over time, could cause the inflator to rupture upon its deployment.
  • Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants potentially resulting in serious injury or death.
  • Remedy: Subaru will notify their owners and General Motors will notify Saab owners. Dealers will replace the passenger air bag inflator, free of charge. The Subaru recall began on June 17, 2015. Owners may contact Subaru customer service at 1-800-782-2783. The Saab recall began on July 27, 2015. Owners of Saab vehicles may call 1-800-955-9007. Subaru's number for this recall is WQR-53. Note: The recall completely supersedes recall 14V-399 (WQL-48) and partially supersedes recall 14V-763 (WQP-51) in that model year 2004 through 2005 Subaru Impreza and model year 2005 Saab 9-2x vehicles are now only part of this campaign. Note: On December 18, 2015 Subaru informed NHTSA of an expansion of this recall to include certain model year 2003-2004 Subaru Baja, 2003-2008 Subaru Legacy and 2003-2008 Subaru Outback vehicles.

Negative 2003 Subaru Legacy car reviews

  1. Bailey Spinka 2025-01-01

I usually get around 20 mpg in the city and 24-28 mpg on the highways. Although I had to replace the clutch at 50K miles, which was a bit of a bummer, a local Subaru specialist replaced it with a heavier version. The notchy transmission could benefit from a 6th gear, and as someone who is 6'3'', the seats aren't the most comfortable for me. However, the car is a blast to drive on the winding Sierra highways, and the AWD is a godsend in the snow. While the engine could use a bit more power, it gets the job done if you use the whole power band and the 5-speed. If the second clutch lasts longer, I'll definitely consider buying the Recaros.

  2. Jamel Welch 2024-11-20

This update highlights the disappointing performance of the Subie after 32k miles. Despite having all required service done, the car still responds sluggishly to throttle input, which is a cause for concern. The car's mileage of 17 mpg city is also subpar for a 4 cylinder, 165hp car. While three Subaru dealers have confirmed that the car runs normally, it is clear that there may be some underlying issues. It is recommended to consider purchasing a 5 speed manual car over the automatic. This confident tone emphasizes the importance of making an informed decision when it comes to purchasing a car.

  3. Wallace Schuster 2024-07-22

The braking system has been a persistent issue, causing damage to the rotors and discs. Additionally, the air conditioning system requires yearly recharging, and the heating system is not effective in heating the floor. The undercarriage has rusted out after only 5 years, which is a major concern. Although two pistons were replaced under warranty, the remaining two are now near failure and are not covered. Based on my experience, I cannot recommend this vehicle to others.

  4. Colton Sawayn 2024-07-22

This car boasts an impressive appearance and luxurious features, however, its performance leaves much to be desired. The acceleration is sluggish and the gas mileage is subpar. Despite these drawbacks, I remain confident in my evaluation and would not recommend this car for purchase.

  5. Noe Dicki 2024-04-10

I purchased this car because it was the most practical option for me - it has plenty of space and all-wheel drive for a reasonable price of $17,500. While I didn't initially consider the 'fun to drive' factor, I have found that it may not be the most exciting car to look at or drive. However, the all-wheel-drive is a great feature, even though it can be a bit power-draining. The power band on the car is a bit unusual, with the engine sounding great up to 3500 RPM and above 4500 RPM, but not so much in between. Lastly, I found the driver's seat to be a bit uncomfortable on long drives, as I prefer a harder seat with lumbar support.

Positive 2003 Subaru Legacy car reviews

  1. Ned Dooley 2025-01-03

With the new GT package, this wagon now has a more luxurious feel, making it one of the best values on the market. After searching for six months, we found that anything comparable cost $7,000 to $10,000 more. Finally getting leather in a wagon was definitely worth the wait. We paid $25,700 for it, which is slightly lower than the TMV model's reading of $26,300, highlighting what a great value this car truly is.

  2. Norval Runte 2024-11-27

Here in L.A., this car is uncommon, which is great! It has excellent handling on city streets and canyon roads, providing a smooth and solid ride. You'll appreciate how quiet and comfortable it is in most situations. Unlike many 4 cylinder cars, there's none of the vibration when idling. The AWD gives it a heavy, solid feel that you'll love. If you're a fan of AWD, you won't want to miss out on Subaru. Keep an eye out for the '05 Legacy design!

  3. Kenneth Hoeger 2024-11-23

I can totally relate to your experience with the Impreza and Legacy GT. In my opinion, the Legacy GT is a much better car in terms of handling and performance. It's amazing how it sticks to the road and allows you to keep up with high-end cars like Porsches and BMWs on mountain roads. I also had the chance to test drive one with an automatic transmission and I agree that the power complaints are valid. However, I opted for the 5-speed and it made a huge difference in terms of responsiveness. Another great thing about the '03 and '04 GTs is that they come with every option you can imagine, including an in-dash CD changer, heated leather seats with side airbags, heated mirrors, windshield wiper de-icer, fog lights, 16-inch wheels, moonroof, and more. It's definitely a rare find to come across a 5-speed Legacy GT with all these features.

  4. Ezequiel Waelchi 2024-10-07

I own a 2003 Subaru Legacy and I absolutely love it. Despite some issues with the head gasket and radiator, my husband has been able to fix it at a minimal cost. I bought it used 8 years ago and it has been a great car to drive. Even with almost 160k miles, it still runs smoothly. I am grateful to have such a reliable car in my life.

  5. Chadd Schmidt 2024-09-29

This car gets a lot of attention when we're parked anywhere! We have the Special Edition L and it has exceeded all of our expectations for a new car. Even in heavy rain, the handling on the highways is top-notch and we couldn't be happier with it!
