The Subaru Legacy (Japanese: スバル・レガシィ, Hepburn: Subaru Regashi) is a mid-size car built by Japanese automobile manufacturer Subaru since 1989. The maker's flagship car, it is unique in its class for offering all-wheel drive as a standard feature, and Subaru's traditional boxer engine. The Legacy was sold as the Liberty in Australia out of deference to Legacy Australia, an organisation dedicated to caring for the families of military service veterans.

In 1996, a variant of the Legacy with heightened suspension called the Legacy Outback was introduced to compete in the burgeoning sport-utility vehicle class and proved to be a sales success for Subaru. The Outback line was split into its own model in 2008, known as the Subaru Outback.

As of 2008, 3.6 million Legacy models have been built since its 1989 introduction.

Production of the Legacy ended in Japan in June 2020, with the sixth-generation Legacy being the last model produced and marketed in Japan. Subaru of America announced in an internal email that 2025 will be the last model year for the Subaru Legacy. The Subaru Outback will remain in production, after being the company's top selling model in 2023.

OVER THE PAST YEAR, AND AFTER SEVERAL MECHANICS VISITS, IT NOW OCCURS NEARLY EVERY TRIP.I HAVE REPLACED SPARK PLUGS (YES NGK), SPARK PLUG WIRES (SUBARU ORIGINAL EQUIPMENT), GAS FILTER, AIR FILTER, COIL, PCV VALVE, KNOCK SENSOR, CAM AND CRANKSHAFT SENSORS. THE INJECTORS HAVE BEEN SWAPPED BETWEEN CYLINDERS. I HAVE BEEN TO AN INDEPENDENT MECHANIC TWICE. ON THE SECOND TRIP HE GAVE UP AND ADVISED I GO TO A SUBARU DEALER. AFTER TWO VISITS TO THE SUBARU DEALER, I'VE SPENT SEVERAL HUNDRED ADDITIONAL DOLLARS AND STILL HAVE THE PROBLEM. THEY REPLACED PLUGS, KNOCK, CAM, AND CRANKSHAFT SENSORS.DOESN'T SUBARU HAVE DIAGNOSTICS TO IDENTIFY WHAT THIS PROBLEM IS. I TOOK THE CAR TO THEM WITH THE EXPECTATION THAT THEY COULD IDENTIFY WHAT IS WRONG INSTEAD OF JUST REPLACING HIGHLY SUSPECT PARTS. THEY DON'T SEEM TO BE DOING ANY BETTER THAN I HAVE DONE ON MY OWN.*AK I'VE SEEN OTHERS POST PROBLEMS HERE AND AT EDMUNDS WITH DRIVEABILITY ISSUES. I'VE NEVER SEEN A POSTING THAT INDICATED IT WAS ACTUALLY SOLVED. SURELY SUBARU KNOWS ABOUT THIS PROBLEM AND HAS A FIX. IT HAS GONE FROM AN ANNOYANCE TO A SAFETY ISSUE. Negative 1996 Subaru Legacy car reviews

  1. Luis Jerde 2024-11-24

I bought this car new, mainly because of Subaru's reputation for safety and reliability. However, I made a couple of mistakes. Firstly, I didn't check the cost of repair rating with my insurer, which resulted in a steep insurance cost. Secondly, I didn't purchase this car from a standalone Subaru dealer. I found that multimark dealers do not maintain parts or knowledgeable mechanics on site, which was a bit of a letdown. Although this car performs well in poor conditions, it was cheaply built with low-quality materials. The paint job was also disappointing, and the alloy wheels corroded so badly that the tires wouldn't hold air. The ride has always been poor. Overall, I don't think I'll be buying any more Subarus in the future!

  2. Jamarcus McGlynn 2024-10-20

Bought my Subaru in 2000 with about 68,000 miles. It's got 168K on it now and still drives great! I had to replace the timing belt at about 140K (even though it should have been replaced earlier), but luckily there was no damage to the valvetrain. The alternator died at about 115K, but it was replaced under the Subaru recall program. Overall, I'm very satisfied with my Subaru and would definitely buy another one!

  3. Arvel Roberts 2024-07-20

The oil seals on my wife's Legacy went bad at 75,000 miles, which is about the same mileage when the oil seals went bad on my Forester. After doing some research, I discovered that this is a common and recurring issue. Although I appreciate the AWD, I am considering other options as Honda and Toyota have a reputation for being more reliable.

  4. Alexander Rempel 2024-06-09

The car has good handling, reasonable power, and is a wonderful bad-weather car with plenty of room and good comfort. However, at 22K, the trick 16-valve 2.5L quad-cam boxer engine (only made in '96) started pinging like an old GM diesel, even on 94.5 octane premium gas. Unfortunately, the dealer was not helpful. At 99K, it has some issues such as bad oil seals, a bad wheel bearing, needs a 3rd set of brakes, bad CV joint, engine sensors, and more. Despite the reliability issues, I still love the car. The service and parts can be expensive, and the fuel economy is poor for the power. On the bright side, the car has absolutely incredible deep snow capability. I believe that 100K trouble-free is not a lot to ask from a car nowadays!

  5. Dee Sanford 2024-03-03

Great AWD! However, it's worth noting that it may not be necessary for snowy conditions, which only occur around 5% of the time even in MN. The clutch was replaced at 78,000mi after slipping for the past 20,000, but overall the performance is average. The fuel consumption is below average, and the brakes could be better. There is an air leak from the corroded front rims, which is reminiscent of a FIAT I once owned. Despite these issues, some may question its reliability reputation.

Positive 1996 Subaru Legacy car reviews

  1. Zachery Kub 2024-10-01

This car has 297,000 miles on it and has been very reliable, still getting close to 26 mpg. While it may not be the best choice for those who prefer to do their own maintenance, it is a great value for the $4K range. The spark plugs can be difficult to change and replacement parts can be expensive. Additionally, it tends to wear out brakes and heater lamps frequently. However, overall it is a good car and has served me well.

This car has been amazing! It's been my reliable workhorse for 12 years, and it's been great in the mountains and in the snow. It's perfect for transporting kids and hauling stuff. I can honestly say it's the best car I've ever owned. I've had to do a few major repairs over time, including a new clutch at 80K miles, but nothing unexpected. Just keep up with regular servicing and this car will treat you right! However, after 12 years, it's time for a new Outback. I will be sad to say goodbye to my 1996 edition!

Hi there! I just wanted to share my experience with my trusty Subaru. I bought it brand new back in '96 and have driven it for over 133,000 miles! I'm happy to say that I've never had any major issues with it, and it's been a reliable companion through all kinds of weather, including some pretty brutal Northeast snowstorms. The fold-down seats have also been a lifesaver for my weekend trips to Home Depot. Today, I'm trading it in for a Mercedes E320 4Matic, but I'll always remember my Subaru fondly and hope that my new car will be just as great. Thanks for listening!

I'm so glad to hear that you've been enjoying driving this vehicle since day one! It's great to hear that it handles wonderfully in all types of road conditions. It sounds like you liked your 1996 model so much that you decided to purchase a second one in 2001. That's wonderful to hear! It must be a pleasure to drive.

Great for dogs, kids, vacations in Lake Tahoe, the beach, or wherever. If you're worried about navigating a steep, dilapidated asphalt driveway with tight turns, don't be! Our product can handle it with ease.
