2007 Subaru Legacy problems
The Subaru Legacy (Japanese: スバル・レガシィ, Hepburn: Subaru Regashi) is a mid-size car built by Japanese automobile manufacturer Subaru since 1989. The maker's flagship car, it is unique in its class for offering all-wheel drive as a standard feature, and Subaru's traditional boxer engine. The Legacy was sold as the Liberty in Australia out of deference to Legacy Australia, an organisation dedicated to caring for the families of military service veterans.
In 1996, a variant of the Legacy with heightened suspension called the Legacy Outback was introduced to compete in the burgeoning sport-utility vehicle class and proved to be a sales success for Subaru. The Outback line was split into its own model in 2008, known as the Subaru Outback.
As of 2008, 3.6 million Legacy models have been built since its 1989 introduction.
Production of the Legacy ended in Japan in June 2020, with the sixth-generation Legacy being the last model produced and marketed in Japan. Subaru of America announced in an internal email that 2025 will be the last model year for the Subaru Legacy. The Subaru Outback will remain in production, after being the company's top selling model in 2023.

Common 2007 Subaru Legacy problems
The 2007 Subaru Legacy has been reported to have several common problems, primarily concerning airbags, engine issues, and electrical problems.
Airbags are the most common issue, with 12 complaints filed with the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA). Drivers have reported being kept on recall waiting lists for extended periods due to airbag issues.
Engine problems are another prevalent issue, with several drivers reporting blown gaskets around 100,000 miles, and one driver stating that they need to replace their head gaskets every 20,000 miles, which can add up to significant repair costs over time.
Electrical issues have also been reported, with some drivers experiencing odd electrical problems, such as the radio turning on causing display lights to turn off. These reports date back to 2008, indicating that they may not be related to simple wear and tear in the wiring.
The 2007 Subaru Legacy has a relatively high number of recalls, with 9 recalls on file, 4 of which are for airbags. This number is higher than the median for a car of this age.
Subaru Legacy owners report a typical lifespan of at least 200,000 miles, with some vehicles lasting up to a quarter-million miles or more. However, regular maintenance is essential for the longevity of the vehicle, and lax maintenance can result in the vehicle not reaching its full potential.
While engine problems are a concern, the 2007 Subaru Legacy has been praised for its sporty agility, comfortable ride, and turbocharged engine. The car's mundane body design and understated marketing fail to advertise its sporty nature, making it a hidden gem for those seeking a high-performance vehicle.
Overall, the 2007 Subaru Legacy is a reliable and powerful vehicle, but it is essential to be aware of potential airbag, engine, and electrical issues that may arise. Regular maintenance and careful driving can help ensure the longevity and reliability of the vehicle.

SERVICE BRAKES PROBLEM
- Date Of Incident: 2024-03-20
- VIN: 4S3BL676474
- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: Brake line failed unexpectedly and catastrophically while driving 2007 Subaru Legacy. Vehicle would have been covered per recall [XXX]; however, it was registered in Virginia so was not 'included' in the recall despite being exposed to comparable levels of snow and road salt in a rural southwestern part of Virginia less than 50 miles from the original recall region. Car was purchased new from a dealership in West Virginia (part of the recall region) and frequently operated in that region. Failing to include parts of Virginia that receive just as much, if not more, snow and corrosive road treatment in recall [XXX] was an error that resulted in a major safety hazard. The brake line failed at the exact location described in recall [XXX], at the 4-way connector block under the fuel-tank protector. The location of the failure is not visible during normal brake service, leading to corrosion in that location going unnoticed and unrepaired. Other substantial portions of the brake line system are polymer-coated to prevent corrosion; however, the small section at the 4-way connector block is not, permitting hazardous corrosion to the point of failure in this case. The recall notice [XXX] should be extended to include additional regions where roads are treated with corrosive salt anti-ice products so owners of these vehicles can have them inspected and/or repaired prior to an unexpected catastrophic failure as I experienced. The design of the braking system with substantial portions of polymer coated lines leads owners and repair staff to believe there is no problem with corrosion of the brake lines and no need for additional inspection or repair, and removal of the fuel-tank protector to expose the portion of the non-coated and corrosion-prone brake line system in the recall is not included as part of the standard maintenance program per the manufacturer. - Date Of Incident: 2021-06-22

- Components: UNKNOWN OR OTHER,VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: The dash pad has deteriorated, become sticky and shinny. My daughter owns a Mazda 3 with a similar problem, Mazda had a recall and the dash pad was replaced by the dealer. This is a safety issue because the shinny finish that has formed creates glare in the inside windshield in the sunlight. It is very dangerous as it obscures vision. I have not taken the car to the dealer and have not reported it to any other authority. Its a car we recently purchased and my first step was to see if there was a recall. Like I said, the same exact issue happened to another car and it was resolved by the manufacturer.

- Components: SERVICE BRAKES
- Summary: SUBARU USA AND THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION HAVE ISSUED A RECALL ON SPECIFIC SUBARU'S THAT IDENTIFIES THE BRAKE SYSTEM WILL FAIL WITHOUT NOTICE. THE BRAKE LINES ON MY VEHICLE THAT FALL UNDER THE RECALL HAVE FAILED AND I DID ENCOUNTER A "NO BRAKE" SITUATION. AFTER BRINGING THE VEHICLE IN FOR REPAIR OF THE RECALL, THE DEALERSHIP CONTACTED ME BACK AND CLAIMED IT WAS NOT THE BRAKE LINES THAT CAUSED THE ISSUE. I CONFIRMED AND TESTED MY CLAIM PRIOR TO BRINGING IN THE VEHICLE THAT THE ISSUE WAS 100% DUE TO THE REAR BRAKE LINE LEAKING. DOYLE FALSIFIED THE ISSUE DURING THEIR EXPLANATION INDICATING IT WAS THE FRONT CALIPER THAT WAS LEAKING, WHICH WAS NOT PART OF THE RECALL. I HAVE MULTIPLE PICTURES THAT SHOW BRAKE FLUID LEAKING FROM THE HIGHLY CORRODED REAR BRAKE LINES. I HAD INDICATED EXACTLY WHERE THE LEAK WAS COMING FROM IN PRINTED DOCUMENTATION PROVIDED TO THE DOYLE SUBARU SERVICE MANAGER. SUBARU STATED THE LEAK WAS NOT COVERED UNDER THE RECALL.

- Date Of Incident: 2012-05-20
- VIN: 4S3BP616876
- Components: ELECTRICAL SYSTEM,EXTERIOR LIGHTING,VISIBILITY/WIPER
- Summary: THE ELECTRICAL HARNESS CONNECTING THE BODY AND REAR LIFT GATE WHICH CONTAINS 14 WIRES WITHIN A RUBBER ACCORDIAN BOOT SUFFERED A BREAKAGE OF ALL 14 WIRES AT THE BODY SIDE OF THE BOOT. THIS AFFECTED THE THIRD BRAKE LIGHT, DEFROST WIRES, AND THE REAR WIPER MOTOR AS A SAFETY ISSUE, AND REAR BACKUP LIGHTS, LIFTGATE LOCK, AND SECURITY SYSTEM AS AN INCONVENIENCE. FIRST ITEM THAT WAS NOTICED WAS LIFT LATCH LOCK NOT WORKING, THEN OTHER ITEMS FAILED IN SUCCESSION. I LOOKED AT AFFECTED COMPONENTS BUT ONLY SOLVED PROBLEM BY ACCESSING A LEGACY OWNERS WEBSITE WHERE THIS WAS FOUND TO BE A FREQUENT ISSUE IN VARYING DEGREES. PROBLEM WAS FIXED, NOT REPAIRED, BY RUNNING 14 NEW HIGHER QUALITY WIRES THROUGH THE RUBBER BOOT AND MAKING CONNECTIONS AT EITHER SIDE. REPLACEMENT HARNESS FROM SUBARU HAD SAME TYPE OF WIRES WHICH IN MY OPINION WOULD HAVE EVENTUALLY FAILED AGAIN.

- Summary: Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain 2009-2013 Forester vehicles, 2008-2011 Impreza vehicles, 2008-2014 WRX vehicles, 2005-2014 Legacy vehicles, 2005-2014 Outback vehicles and 2006-2008 Tribeca vehicles equipped with a mechanical key ignition switch installed as a replacement part. The ball spring inside the switch may break, reducing the strength of the ignition switch. If this occurs, the weight on the key ring and certain road conditions could cause the ignition switch to move out of the run position to the accessory position, turning off the engine.
- Consequence: The engine turning off unexpectedly can increase the risk of a crash. If a crash occurs under this condition, the air bag may not deploy, increasing the risk of injury.
- Remedy: Subaru will notify owners, and dealers will inspect the ignition switch, replacing the ignition switch, if necessary, free of charge. The recall began May 10, 2019. Owners may contact Subaru customer service at 1-844-373-6614. Subaru's number for this recall is WUF-91.

The affected vehicles are equipped with a passenger side frontal air bag that may be susceptible to moisture intrusion which, over time, could cause the inflator to rupture upon its deployment.
- Consequence: In the event of a crash necessitating deployment of the passenger's frontal air bag, the inflator could rupture with metal fragments striking the vehicle occupants potentially resulting in serious injury or death.

- Summary: Subaru of America, Inc. (Subaru) is recalling certain model year 2005-2009 Outback and Legacy, 2008-2011 Impreza and 2008-2014 Impreza WRX/STI, and 2009-2013 Forester vehicles, currently, or formerly, registered in Connecticut, Delaware, Illinois, Indiana, Iowa, Maine, Maryland, Massachusetts, Michigan, Minnesota, Missouri, New Hampshire, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Rhode Island, Vermont, West Virginia, Wisconsin and the District of Columbia. - Consequence: Brake line corrosion may result in brake fluid leakage. Fluid leakage may result in longer distances being required to slow or stop the vehicle, increasing the risk of a crash.
- Remedy: Subaru will notify owners, and dealers will test the brake system by depressing the brake pedal and inspecting for brake fluid leaks. If no brake fluid seepage is observed, the affected areas will be rustproofed with anti-corrosion wax. If brake fluid seepage is observed, the brake lines will be replaced followed by rustproofing with anti-corrosion wax. These services will be performed free of charge. The recall began July 2014 and second notifications will run through November 2014. Owners may contact Subaru at 1-800-782-2783. Subaru's recall campaign number is WQK-47. Note: This recall supersedes recall 13V-110 which applied to certain 2005-2009 Legacy/Outback vehicles. I recently traded in my BMW 3 series wagon for the Legacy GT, and I must say, the difference is night and day. The BMW felt like a truck compared to this nimble and agile car. Even my daughter's Audi A4 doesn't compare. The Legacy GT is an absolute joy to drive - it accelerates wonderfully and handles like a dream. I actually look forward to running errands now because of how fun this car is. While there are some features that the BMW had, such as memory seats and mirrors, that this car is missing, I still think it's a great trade-off. And, in my opinion, it's best with a manual transmission.

I traded in my Mazda 6s 5-speed for the Legacy SpecB and I couldn't be happier. The ride quality, comfort, fit and finish inside the car, and certainly performance are all superior to my old Mazda. Few vehicles perform like this one does while treating driver and passengers to such a pleasant riding experience. I also appreciate the understated styling - it's no fun driving a 'cop magnet'! Overall, my experience with the Legacy SpecB has been spectacular so far!

I used to have a 96 Camry, then I traded it for an 04 Accord, but now I'm in love with my Subie. As an outside sales rep, I do a lot of driving and I wish there were more places to put my wallet, sunglasses, phone, notepad, etc. on long drives. My Accord had all of those things, but my new Legacy has something even better - it's unique and fun to drive! The only downside is that the rear seat width is a bit lacking, so it's not the most comfortable for two adults and a child seat. However, this car has got to have the best performing, fastest 4-cylinder engine out there! I drive 30k miles per year, and the last 6k have been the most fun. Best of all, I don't feel like just another guy in an Accord or Camry.

I'm so glad to hear that you're enjoying your car! It sounds like you've had a great experience driving it so far. The Taconic Parkway can be quite challenging, but it sounds like your car has handled it with ease. It's great to hear that you haven't noticed any loss of power since trading in your Buick six. The handling sounds fantastic, and it's impressive that it's even better than some other well-known car brands. The back support also sounds like a great feature, and it's good to know that the shifter is smooth and easy to use. Thank you for sharing your positive experience with us!
